Many countries are considering reducing speed limits on motorways and in urban areas.
Fuel savings and reductions in CO2 emissions are just two of the reasons for doing so.
Fuel consumption decreases the slower you drive, because the moving car has to overcome fewer physical forces such as air resistance and rolling friction (摩擦) between tyres and road. Air resistance increases with the square of the speed. This means that a car experiences 28% more air resistance at a speed of 130km/h than at 110km/h.
试卷第 3 页,共 15 页
Slower speed is not the only way to reduce the CO2 emissions from your car. There are three automotive tips to help the climate else.
STREAMLINE THE CAR
1. Unevenness (不均匀) increases the air resistance of your car, and so its CO2 emissions. Four open windows increase fuel consumption by up to 27%.
GET UP THE GEARS (齿轮) QUICKLY
2. Petrol and diesel (柴油) cars should always be driven in the highest possible gear: the engine then has as few revolutions as possible. Fuel consumption between two gears can vary by up to 20%.
MAINTAIN TYRE PRESSURE
3. Car tyres at the recommended pressure ensure ideal driving. If the tyre pressure drops to 75% pressure, fuel consumption increases by 2%. If it drops by half, the increase is as much as
10%.
Here’s the breakdown of fuel consumption impact of driving habits and vehicle adjustments from the Federation of Danish Motorists (FDM).
21 .Why does driving at a lower speed help cut fuel use
A .It weakens the physical forces the car must fight against.
B .It changes the way air resistance affects the car.
试卷第 4 页,共 15 页
C .It lightens the weight of the moving vehicle.
D .It makes the engine work at a higher speed.
22 .What will happen if a car’s windows are wide open while driving
A .It’ll lower the car’s air resistance.
B .It’ll reduce the car’s CO2 emissions.
C .It’ll lead to a sharp rise in fuel use.
D .It’ll make the car run more smoothly.
23.What is the fuel-saving effect of reducing speed from 130km/h to 110km/h according to FDM
data
A .10%. B .16%. C .Up to 20%. D .Nearly 28%.
B
From an airplane, cars moving slowly on the highway closely resemble a line of ants.
Unlike these human-driven vehicles, however, ants are able to avoid the frustrating stop-and-go traffic that bothers daily commutes (通勤). Researchers have therefore turned their attention to studying the ants’ teamwork-based behaviors, hoping to apply these insights to programming
self-driving cars that can prevent traffic jams.
As the number of cars on highways keeps growing, the stability of traffic flow gradually
decreases. Studies show that when the density (密度) reaches 15 vehicles per mile per lane (车道), a single driver’s sudden brake tap can give rise to long-lasting and widespread traffic jams.
Scientist Katsuhiro Nishinari, a mathematical physicist studying traffic transitions, compares this phenomenon to a phase transition, such as water turning into ice. Even small individual actions in such situations can quickly develop into major traffic issues.
Katsuhiro Nishinari’s previous research has already shown that food-seeking ants can
maintain smooth movement even when their population density is very high. A recent follow-up study has uncovered they usually travel in groups of 3 to 20 individuals, moving at steady speeds with proper gaps between each other and never attempting to overtake. Their behavior depends on mutual collaboration rather than individual preferences.
This collective intelligence offers a lesson for human drivers today. One key takeaway is to avoid tailgating. Keeping a safe distance from the vehicle ahead helps absorb the shock waves
试卷第 5 页,共 15 页
caused by sudden braking in dense traffic — a simple practice that prioritizes the smooth flow of the whole over individual hurry. Of course, ants have the natural advantage of creating flexible
paths, while cars are bound to fixed lanes. But the principle of maintaining proper spacing remains crucial for safety and efficiency on our roads.
Looking ahead, the real transformation may come from technology. As Katsuhiro Nishinari points out, “Unlike human drivers who often act independently, future self-driving cars could be designed to share real-time data and function as an integrated system.” Inspired by ants, these
vehicles can upgrade traffic flow as a cooperative system, potentially requiring updates to existing regulations to fully realize their benefits.
24 .What can cause widespread highway traffic jams directly
A .A total of 15 cars per mile. B .Ant behaviors affecting driving.
C .Reduced stability of traffic flow. D .A sudden brake at a certain density.
25 .What is the purpose of mentioning the recent follow-up study in paragraph 3
A .To compare ants with human drivers. B .To criticize current traffic regulations.
C.To explain the math behind traffic jams. D.To detail how ants achieve smooth movement.
26 .What does the underlined word “tailgating” probably mean in paragraph 4
A .Keeping a proper distance. B .Following strict traffic rules.
C .Driving too close to the front. D .Seeking efficient lane position.
27 .What is Katsuhiro Nishinari’s suggestion for ant-inspired self-driving cars
A .Collect personal travel data. B .Adopt a collaborative approach.
C .Redesign traffic rules constantly. D .Rely on active human intervention.

AI image generators have made a giant leap forward in a remarkably short period. These sophisticated systems are now capable of creating human faces that are not only convincing but often perceived as more realistic than actual human ones. This phenomenon, termed
“hyper-realism”, poses a significant challenge to digital trust. However, a recent collaborative study by researchers from the UK points to a promising path: improving our collective AI-face detection capabilities through specialized, targeted training.
The research team tested the face-assessing skills of 664 volunteers, categorized into two
试卷第 6 页,共 15 页
distinct groups: “super-recognizers” — individuals who possess a rare, naturally superior ability for facial recognition — and those with typical recognition skills. The experiment involved two core tasks designed to test intuition and logic. In the initial task, volunteers evaluated a single
image to determine its origin; in the subsequent task, they were presented with a pair of faces — one real and one synthetic — and asked to identify the fake.
In the control group that received no prior instruction, the data revealed a worrying trend.
Super-recognizers correctly identified AI faces only 41 percent of the time, while typical
recognizers dropped to a mere 31 percent. Given that half the images were AI-generated, both groups performed significantly worse than random chance (50 percent). This statistical gap
confirms that AI portraits can effectively deceive the human brain’s natural processing systems.
To counter this, the study introduced a brief five-minute intervention. Participants were
trained to look for “tell-tale” signs — subtle biological flaws such as unnatural teeth alignment or strange blurring where the hair meets the skin.
Following this session, the accuracy of super-recognizers boosted to 64 percent. In contrast, while typical recognizers improved to 51 percent, they remained at the level of a coin flip.
“As AI images are increasingly exploited for illegal purposes like identity theft scams,
testing detection methods is crucial from a security standpoint,” explains researcher EilidhNoyes. The findings highlight that while technology evolves, human expertise remains indispensable.
Combining innate talent with professional training may be our best defense in verifying digital identities and securing the future of online interaction.
28 .The study mainly examines participants’ ________.
A .logical reasoning
B .reaction speed
C .technical knowledge
D .observational skills
29 .What does the training session primarily focus on
A .Improving the general speed of visual assessment.
B .Analyzing the psychological impact of digital fakes.
C .Recognizing artificial traces in biological features.
D .Understanding the technical principles of AI systems.
试卷第 7 页,共 15 页
30 .What is the significance of the 64 percent accuracy rate mentioned in paragraph 5
A .It confirms the potential of combining gift with practice.
B .It represents the maximum limit of human recognition,
C .It shows the similarity between human and AI.
D .It indicates that most people can be trained to spot false images.
31 .What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A .Technical evolution will eventually eliminate identity theft
B .Professional training is more essential than natural talent.
C .Human factors remain a critical layer in digital defense.
D .The security risks of AI are currently overestimated.

Nadine Grimm’s A Grammar of Gyeli opens with a moving quote honoring ancestors: “For our ancestors who have left us - may we keep their wisdom.” This sets the tone for her study of
the Gyeli language in Ngòló, a small village in southern Cameroon, rich in culture and hidden knowledge.
In her prize-winning work, Grimm displays the essence of the Gyeli language, spoken by
the Bagyeli people, who are sometimes called “Pygmies.” The grammatical description, which is presented in a form-to-function approach, covers all levels of language, ranging from Gyeli speech sounds to its information structure and complex sentences.
Her path to studying African languages began by chance during her Bachelor’s degree in General Linguistics and French. She had an unexpected opportunity to work with a professor in Nigeria, which led to her first African language conference and started her interest in African
languages.
Grimm’s research includes deep fieldwork, such as recording conversations and joining in everyday activities with the Bagyeli. At first, she used assistants to communicate due to language barriers, but as her understanding grew, she began talking directly with the speakers. This method differs from traditional ones, focusing on real language use rather than simple word-for-word
translations.
The importance of reference grammars like Grimm’s becomes clear in light of the global
试卷第 8 页,共 15 页
problem of disappearing languages. With 50-90% of the world’s languages at risk, documenting languages like Gyeli is essential. “When languages die, we lose entire knowledge systems,”
Grimm says.
Her work not only records the Gyeli language but also adds to the understanding of
endangered Bantu languages in general. It represents one of the most comprehensive descriptions of a northwestern Bantu language.
For her efforts, Grimm was awarded the 2023 Bloomfield Book Award from the Linguistic Society of America. A single Bloomfield Book award is made annually to recognize “a volume
that makes an outstanding contribution of long-term value to the understanding of language and linguistics.” Grimm’s work was praised for adding audio and video recordings that improve
reliability in language research.
32 .Why did Grimm write A Grammar of Gyeli
A .To keep a knowledge system. B .To honor her ancestors.
C .To record the tone of Gyeli. D .To satisfy her interest in languages.
33 .What do we know about the Gyeli language
A .It is endangered.
B .It is simple in structure.
C .It has to be studied in a form-to-function approach.
D .It functions differently from other Bantu languages.
34 .Why does the author mention Bantu languages
A .To highlight their importance.
B .To illustrate the problem of disappearing languages.
C .To emphasize the urgency of protecting them.
D .To demonstrate the value of Grimm’s study.
35 .What contributed most to the success of Grimm’s research
A .Her work with a professor in Nigeria.
B .Her ability in learning a new language.
C .Her relationship with the Bagyeli people.
D .Her unique and reliable research method.

Does your cat or dog suddenly get a burst of energy and perform athletic features around the house Welcome to the world of zoomies — tense periods of high-energy activity including running, jumping and rolling.
You might see post-bath zoomies, midnight zoomies and out-of-nowhere zoomies. We
don’t yet know if zoomies are more likely to occur at certain times of the day, or more in some than others. ____36____ If the zoomies are occurring as part of your animal’s daily routine, this implies your animal is enjoying themselves. Actually, zoomies have a lot in common with play.
____37____
Zoomies are mentioned a lot, but there is little scientific research why they occur. Yet some
conclusions can be drawn from experience. ____38____ In dogs, this is commonly a play
bow-where the dog appears to “bow” to another to signal it is eager to play. In cats, an invitation may include repeatedly rolling over. If this is the case, your animal is likely experiencing
excitement and a desire to interact with you.
____39____ You should consult with your vet (兽医) if your dog or cat is displaying the
behavior (in particular, circling) for too long. It might be a sign of a repetitive behavior disorder. If you struggle to distract or stop the behavior, or if it is resulting in injuries, seek professional
assistance.
Even if you don’t get the call of the zoomies yourself, take a moment to enjoy and even join your dog or cat in having fun. ____40____
A .Sometimes we all need to run wild.
B .You can easily tell they bring a whole load of fun.
C .It is our duty to figure out what they want exactly.
D .Nothing is more annoying than a midnight zoomie.
E .However, we do consider them evidence of a pretty good mood.
F .For example, zoomies can be seen as an invitation for others to join.
G .Sometimes, however, zoomies may be a sign of a medical condition.

It was 11 pm when Alex Conrad saw a woman on Main Street Bridge. Her car was parked strangely on the shoulder, hazard lights (危险警示灯) flashing weakly. She was standing beside the driver’s door, one arm stuck inside the window, and her body bent awkwardly as if she were struggling to break free.
Instead of taking a shortcut (抄近路) across the bridge, Alex slowed down. Something felt off. (有些事感觉不对劲) . Why would anyone be stuck with their car this late — especially in
March, when Wisconsin’s night wind cut through jackets like a knife He circled back, parked 15 feet behind her car with his own hazard lights on, and stepped out.

“Hey, you okay ” he called. The woman jumped then winced (疼得一咧嘴) . She was in her 20s, with her hair messy from the wind. Her free hand grasped the car door handle so tightly that her knuckles (指关节) had turned white.
“The door — it won’t open,” she replied, pulling her arm again. “I stopped because the
engine started making strange noises, and when I got out to check it, the door lock jammed. The window was halfway down, so I leaned in, trying the inside handle. Suddenly, the window rolled up. Now my arm’s stuck between the window and the frame,” Her voice cracked. Alex could see red marks forming on her arm where the metal was digging into her skin.
“I’m Alex. Let’s take it slow,” he said, walking over carefully. The woman told him her name was Mia. She’d been driving home from her part-time job at a supermarket when the car started acting up.
For the next 20 minutes, Alex tried gentle fixes. He pulled the outside handle — locked.
Without hesitation, he rushed to the passenger side, opened the door, and climbed across the seat. He desperately pressed the window switch and pulled the inside handle, but nothing happened.
Mia’s arm started to shake. “What if my arm goes numb (麻木的) ” she whispered.注意:

W: I think July would be the best time. Our sales are always down that month. We could move all the office equipment at a weekend, do everything at once.
M: I think a weekend’s too short. Maybe we should do it department by department.
W: What do you mean
M: Well, each week a different department would move. That way, there would always be people here to handle customer inquiries, phone calls and so on.
W: Hmm, That’s a good idea.

W: That deserves praise. How does your family feel about the time you’re devoting to it
M: Well, it’s been challenging. My family has been supportive, but I can sense their concerns.
W: I see. What are their major concerns
M: They worry that I might not have enough time for study or that I’ll neglect my responsibilities
at home.
W: That’s understandable. How do you plan to address these concerns while continuing your important work
M: It’s a balancing act for sure. I’m making an effort to involve them in some of the community activities, so it becomes a family effort. And I’ve been working on better time management.

yourself in the situation you’re investigating, you can then write from a more informed point of view.
M: I see. So what did you do
W: Well, I worked as a waitress, a hotel housekeeper, a nursing home assistant and a supermarket clerk. I spent a month in each low paid job, working in Florida, Maine and Minnesota.
M: Well, that’s a lot of different jobs and places. What exactly did you find out
W: Well, first the rents were very high and the wages were so low. Also, you have to be a hard
worker. Interviewing people is one thing, but actually doing the job day to day shows you exactly how hard these people’s lives are.
M: Hum and of course, Nickel and Diamond went on to be a very popular book. It was a New
York Times bestseller.
W: Yes, I was really surprised at all the interest. I think it really opened people’s eyes a first hand account like that. I hope my book can attract more attention so as to improve the situation of
people in low paid jobs.

Considering gardening, people tend to picture an elderly man or woman in front of their
house. Yet a recent study among 2,000 young people aged between 18 and 34 has revealed that
gardening is becoming increasingly popular among young people. Kev Smith, who organized the survey, said that the study showed that gardening suits everyone, whatever their age. On average, young adults spend around two hours per week taking care of their plants. Two thirds of
participants also said that they love shopping for gardening items, including plants, seeds and
tools. Naturally, the item that is bought most frequently is gardening gloves, probably the item that is most frequently used to. The most popular place to grow plants is on the kitchen windows,

【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了蚂蚁的团队协作行为对缓解交通拥堵的启示及未来自动驾驶汽车的应用前景。
24 .细节理解题。根据第二段中“Studies show that when the density (密度) reaches 15 vehicles per mile per lane (车道), a single driver’s sudden brake tap can give rise to long-lasting and
Katsuhiro Nishinari’s previous research has already shown that food-seeking ants can maintain smooth movement even when their population density is very
high. A recent follow-up study has uncovered they usually travel in groups of 3 to 20 individuals, moving at steady speeds with proper gaps between each other and never attempting to
One key takeaway is to avoid tailgating. Keeping a safe distance

27 .细节理解题。根据最后一段中“As Katsuhiro Nishinari points out, “Unlike human drivers who often act independently, future self-driving cars could be designed to share real-time data and function as an integrated system.” Inspired by ants, these vehicles can upgrade traffic flow as a
cooperative system, potentially requiring updates to existing regulations to fully realize their

Before Alex could answer, he noticed a police car round the corner. The officers saw the hazard lights flashing in the darkness and pulled over to investigate. “Is there a problem here ”
one of them called out as they approached. Alex quickly explained the desperate situation,
pointing to Mia’s trapped arm and the rising panic in her eyes. One officer immediately went back to get a few tools from the police car. Working together, they slipped a thin metal tool between the glass and the door frame. With steady pressure, they created just enough space to free the trapped arm.
Finally, Mia pulled her arm free. She was shaking, both from the cold and the shock.
“Thank you — all of you,” she said as she rubbed her arm gently. Tears of relief welled up in her eyes. One officer called a local repair service to have Mia’s car taken away, while Alex handed her his jacket. After everything was settled, Mia waved warm goodbyes to the officers and Alex before taking a taxi home. Back in his car, Alex realized that his small choice had turned a
frightening situation into a safe resolution. Sometimes, he thought, the best thing you can do is simply stop and care.
