Wildlife faces threats from habitat destruction, pollution, and some human activities.
Although protecting wildlife may seem too hard at times, even small actions in your own
neighborhood can help protect many different animals. Here are some tips on how to protect wildlife through small actions.
Create wildlife-friendly areas in your backyard
When trying to make your garden more beautiful, you can choose plants that can provide
food and shelter for the native wildlife. This will also help cut down on pollution. Besides, bird or bat houses in your yard or garden can attract and shelter more species.
Avoid harming the natural ecosystem in your backyard
Some plants from other places can kill or harm the native plants that provide food and shelter for wildlife.
Have a greener lifestyle
By using less water and fewer fuels, you will do good to help protect the wildlife around you. Take buses or the subway if you can, turn off the electrical devices when you’re not using them, take showers for a shorter time, and keep the temperature in your room at or below 68
Fahrenheit degrees in winter.
Buy products that are friendly to wildlife
Don’t buy products that are made from endangered animals. Keep in mind that some endangered animals are killed by traps, or hunters who are eager to earn money with them.
Donate money to organizations that protect wildlife and their habitats
You can give money to organizations or groups that protect wildlife in your neighborhood, thus promoting their work.

At the 2025 National Swimming Championships, Chinese swimmer Li Bingjie made a big splash(引起轰动). After setting a new Asian record in the women’s 400-meter freestyle, she went on to sweep gold medals in the women’s 200m, 800m and 1,500m freestyle. Even after her
successes, the 23-year-old stayed calm.
From a family of professional swimmers, Li has been talented and confident in swimming
since she was young. At the 2017 Budapest World Championships, the then 15-year-old girl was a dark horse in China’s swimming team, winning a bronze in the women’s 400m freestyle and a
silver in the 800m freestyle. But soon after this highlight(高光时刻), her career took an
unexpected dark turn. At the 2019 Gwangju World Championships, Li failed to qualify(合格)for the finals in both the women’s 400m and 800m freestyle. The following year, she badly hurt her
wrist during training.
Even in the darkest moment of her career, Li didn’t give up her dream of winning at the Olympics. To get back on top form, she swam at least 10,000 meters every day and ran 100 laps (圈)on a high-altitude track field from morning until noon.
“You are facing the bottom of the pool when you’re swimming, and no one’s talking to
you. It’s very dull and can be very frightening,” Li told The Beijing News about her long-distance training. It was these tough moments that shaped her into the calm, strong and gentle person she is today.
At the 2024 Paris Olympics, she helped the Chinese swimming team take home a bronze
medal in the women’s 4×200m freestyle relay. But she still has one more goal: to win an Olympic

Morningside Park in Miami, on the east coast of the US, will soon start a new project to
improve the environment. Our team has developed BIOCAP tiles(砖)using 3D printing, which will be installed(安装)on the existing seawall there this year. With their unique design, these tiles will help deal with rising sea levels and bring back nature along the coastline.
Seawalls are usually made with concrete(混凝土)to prevent waves from eroding(侵蚀) the land and flooding people’s homes. However, traditional seawalls can harm the environment.
Their flat surfaces take away the habitat areas that marine organisms(海洋生物)depend on. These organisms help keep the water clear and clean by filtering out extra nutrients and pollutants.
BIOCAP tiles are designed with lines, cracks and small pockets. These features copy
natural coastline conditions and create tiny homes for marine creatures. The swirling(旋涡)
patterns also increase the total surface area, so that the organisms have more space to use. In
addition, shaded(遮阴的)spots on the tiles provide cooler micro-environments, supporting life as more heat events happen due to climate change.
试卷第 5 页,共 12 页
Another benefit is that they can better reduce the impact of waves. When waves hit a
natural coastline, their energy is gradually taken in by uneven(不平的)surfaces and plants.
However, when waves strike vertical(垂直的)concrete seawalls, the energy is reflected right back into the water. This reflection can increase wave action, make erosion worse at the base of the
wall and create more dangerous conditions during storms.
The tiles’ shapes are based on how water behaves with different surfaces at high and low
tide. Some tiles curve(弯曲)inward while others outward, and they are placed at different heights along the seawall. This results in surfaces that spread out wave energy by copying the natural way it fades on untouched shorelines.
8 .What is a major goal of the BIOCAP tiles project
A .To reduce coastal pollution. B .To rebuild damaged seawalls.
C .To improve shoreline ecology. D .To promote urban development.
9 .What is one problem caused by traditional seawalls
A .They stop sunlight from reaching ocean life. B .They release pollutants into the water.
C .They reduce habitat areas for ocean life. D .They speed up the erosion of the land.
10 .What do para3 and para4 mainly focus on
A .Problems with traditional seawalls. B .Design and advantages of BIOCAP tiles.
C.The working theory of BIOCAP tiles. D.A comparison between old and new seawalls.
11 .How do BIOCAP tiles help reduce wave impact according to the last paragraph
A .By growing plants on their surface.
B .By reflecting waves back into the ocean.
C .By stopping waves from reaching the shore.
D .By copying wave energy fading on natural shorelines.

If walking is part of your exercise routine, you might want to try stopping to smell the roses once in a while during your walk, a new study suggests. Researchers in Italy found short periods
of walking might actually give your metabolism(新陈代谢)more of a workout than walking the same distance without a break.
Francesco Luciano, the lead researcher, and his team explain that using long continuous
试卷第 6 页,共 12 页
walking to measure energy consumption(消耗量)“greatly diminishes the metabolic cost of brief
walks.”
This is meaningful not only for people who are trying to burn off more of their energy, but also for people who might be trying to conserve(保存)it. This may also be important information for programs designed to help prevent people losing weight while still getting the benefits of
exercise, like eating disorder treatment programs.
It’s important to note these findings are based on a pretty small sample size of just 10
healthy participants — 5 male, 5 female — all around 27 years of age, so the results may not be representative(代表性)of a broader population.
For the study, each participant walked on a stair climber(楼梯机)for 10, 30, 60, 90, and 240 seconds, and in a separate experiment, walked for those same periods on a treadmill(跑步机). The research team measured how much oxygen participants used, on average, when they
were at rest before the experiments, and then again after the walking. Oxygen consumption is often used to measure how much energy is being used during exercise.
“Our findings show that the time-averaged oxygen consumption and metabolic cost are greater for shorter than longer walks,” the researchers report. During 30-second walks, the
participants consumed 20-60 percent more oxygen than the standard estimates for walking exercise, which are based on long, continuous walking.
12 .What did the researchers find about walking
A .Long, continuous walks are the best way to burn energy.
B .Walking on a treadmill is better than walking outdoors.
C .Walk with breaks may help burn more calorie.
D .Walking speed matters more than walking time.
13 .What does paragraph 3 mainly tell us about the study
A .Its process. B .Its significance. C .Its purpose. D .Its finding.
14 .What can we infer about the findings ofthe study
A .They may not be true for all groups. B .They can be applied to all people.
C.They are based on a large population. D.They show walking is useless for weight loss.
15 .How did the researchers carry out the study
A .They compared walking habits of different age groups.
试卷第 7 页,共 12 页
B .They had participants walk long distances without stopping.
C .They studied only stair climbing for different periods.
D .They measured oxygen use before and after short walks on machines.

It was a quiet Saturday afternoon in the small town of Maple Ridge. I hadjust left George’s Hardware Store, carrying a few things I needed for some home repairs. I was a bit behind
schedule, so I hurried to my car, put the items in the trunk (后备箱), and then shut it.
As I reached into my pocket for my keys, I realized that I didn’t have them. My heart sank as I rushed to the driver’s side door. Sure enough, my keys and phone were sitting on the front
seat, locked inside. “Seriously ” I sighed, kicking the tire.
Just then, a teenager on a red bike rode up. He looked about 16, with messy brown hair and

a worn backpack. His bike looked just as worn as the rest of him, but he pedaled (骑车) gracefully and effortlessly. And he had a friendly smile on his face. Noticing I was in trouble, he asked what had happened.
After I explained my situation, he offered his phone at once, suggesting that I call someone for help. Though grateful, I told him that even if I called my wife, who had the spare key, she
wouldn’t be able to bring it since this was our only car.
The boy listened carefully, thought for a moment, and asked where my house was. When I told him it was on Morris Street, he glanced at his bike and suggested that he ride over, grab the spare key from my wife, and bring it back.
I hesitated, realizing it would be an 11-kilometre round trip, almost an hour’s ride, and I suddenly felt bad for the boy. But before I could say anything, he handed me his phone and
insisted that I call my wife and tell her to have the key ready. His confidence and determination left me with little room to argue. I agreed and made the call.

However, some improper traveling behaviors occur at times. For example, to prove their presence, some tourists destroy the tourist sites by leaving ugly marks. Worse still, others litter everywhere. For these, I am calling on everyone of you to be civilized tourists: stop littering, be considerate to the earth and be responsible for future generations.
All in all, it’s high time that we joined our hands and took action immediately. Together we can make a difference.

47 . As soon as I hung up, the boy wasted no time. He quickly dialed a number on his phone. I assumed it was to let his family know where he was going, so they wouldn’t worry. He adjusted
his backpack, making sure it was secure for the long ride. Then, with a determined look in his eye, he got back on his bike and started pedaling towards Morris Street. I watched him until he was out of sight, feeling a mix of gratitude and guilt for troubling him, but also admiring his sense of
responsibility and willingness to help.
An hour later, as I saw the boy cycling toward me, my worries were gone. As he approached, I could see beads of sweat on his forehead, but his face was lit up with a sense of accomplishment. I thanked him sincerely, offering him some money as a token of my appreciation. He politely
declined, saying it was just a small thing he could do to help out a neighbor. With that, he got back on his bike and rode off, leaving me with a profound sense of gratitude and a reminder that
kindness still exists in this world.
