My name is Wang Hao, an eighth-grade student from Shanghai. My career dream is to be an engineer—ever since I was little, I’ve been fascinated by how bridges and buildings are designed. I often draw simple building plans in my notebook and dream of creating safe and beautiful structures one day.
However, my dream faces a big challenge: I’m not good at physics. Last term, my physics exam score was very low. I felt frustrated and even wanted to give up my dream. My father, who is an engineer himself, noticed my sadness. He sat down with me and said, “Growing pains are part of chasing dreams. Every engineer faces difficulties, but persistence helps them overcome them.”
His words encouraged me. I made a plan to improve my physics. I asked my teacher for extra exercises and joined a study group. Every evening, I spent 30 minutes reviewing physics knowledge. It was hard at first—I often felt tired after a long day of study—but I kept going.
After three months, I made great progress. My physics score improved a lot, and I even won a small prize in the school science competition. More importantly, I gained confidence and learned to be persistent. I realized that growing pains are not failures, but lessons that make us stronger. Now, I still work hard every day to get closer to my dream. I know that as long as I face pains bravely and never give up, I will become a good engineer one day.

Dennis Hong has a cool job—he creates smart robots.
When Hong was 7, his parents took him to see the film Star Wars. He was drawn to the robot “droids” in the film and dreamed of building such a robot when he grew up. After years of hard work, he finally achieved his dream.
Now Hong is an engineer, and he runs the Robotics & Mechanisms Laboratory (RoMeLa) at the University of California. The main work of his team is making humanoid robots. These robots can help tackle disasters during emergencies.
“We create the smart machines to do the work people can’t or don’t want to do. This is our goal,” Hong said.
It’s not easy to build humanoid robots. “The hardest part is perfecting their movements, like hand motions and walking,” Hong explained. “Objects, such as stairs and doors, are made for people. If robots are to move around and use things in our world, they need to do them like we do.”
Developing a robot follows clear steps. First, the team comes up with ideas that might work before they build it. Then they program the robot’s software (软件). After that, they start to make its metal (金属) parts. Once the robot is completed, the team tests it to see what needs improving.
Hong loves all of his robots. “Our projects, big or small, make the world better,” he said.
71.What does the underlined word “tackle” most probably mean
A.Do. B.Avoid. C.Plan. D.Compare.
72.What is the main goal of Hong’s team
