Dear diary,
1. I was just reading my diary from four years ago. How time flies! Back then, I was so disappointed at being too short and failing to get on the basketball team. I couldn’t help laughing at my heartbreaking words then. Basketball was really a big deal for me. But things changed soon after that.
2. I was so hurt by my failure back then, and my friends were all worried. “Why not try something else, like swimming or skiing ” suggested my best friend. At first, I swam just to take my mind off things. But soon, I fell completely in love with the sport. I’ve won several competitions now and I’ve made a lot of friends. My life has taken a different turn.
3. It’s great to look back and see my pains and gains with fresh eyes. Growing up will never be an easy thing. But we need to look at challenges the right way.
4. Now I understand that failure is a part of life. It may fall upon us at any stage in our lives. I have experienced many other terrible moments since then. But I have never felt so bad again. I know clearly that failure lasts just a moment. When one door closes, another opens. Life is waiting for us with many other surprises.

As a teenager, I have experienced many growing pains. I often argue with my mother about my after-school activities. She wants me to study all the time, but I want to play basketball with my friends. I feel upset and don’t even want to talk with her.
One day, my teacher talked with me and told me that my mother’s strictness is full of love. She just hopes I can study hard and have a good future. Then I tried to communicate with my mother patiently. I told her I would finish my homework first, then play basketball for an hour. To my surprise, she agreed with me.

In 2026, a survey among eighth-grade students shows that 85% of teenagers have clear career dreams, but over 70% of them face growing pains while chasing these dreams. From poor academic performance to lack of support from family, these pains often make teenagers feel confused and even want to give up. However, growing pains are not enemies; they are valuable experiences that help us grow.
First, career dreams give teenagers motivation to study. When you have a dream job in mind, you know what skills and knowledge you need to improve. For example, if you want to be a reporter, you will pay more attention to improving your writing and speaking skills. This motivation helps you study harder and become more focused.
Second, growing pains teach us important life lessons. When you face difficulties—such as poor grades or family disagreement—you learn to solve problems and become more independent. You may ask teachers for help, communicate with your parents, or make a practical plan. These experiences make you stronger and more capable of facing challenges in the future.
Third, overcoming growing pains brings valuable gains. You may become more confident, persistent, or good at communicating. These qualities are not only useful for achieving your career dream but also for your future life. For instance, a student who overcomes shyness to practice speaking for the dream of becoming a teacher will become more outgoing, which helps in any job.
In short, career dreams and growing pains go hand in hand. Dreams give us direction, and pains help us grow. Teenagers should hold onto their dreams, face growing pains bravely, and cherish the gains from overcoming difficulties. Only in this way can we grow into better people and make our dreams come true.

Dear diary,
Today I’m looking back on a difficult time in my life, and I want to write down how it changed me. When I was in Grade Eight, my biggest dream was to be a member of the school basketball team. I had loved basketball since I was a little kid, and I spent every afternoon after school practicing dribbling, shooting, and running on the playground. My father even bought me a new basketball and often practiced with me on weekends. I was sure that my hard work would pay off, and I couldn’t wait for the try-out day to come.
The try-out day finally arrived. I woke up early that morning, put on my favorite basketball jersey, and went to the school playground with excitement. There were more than 30 students trying out for the team, and I felt a little nervous but confident. The coach, Mr. Brown, asked us to do some warm-up exercises first, and then we took turns showing our skills. I did my best to shoot accurately and run as fast as I could, but when the try-out ended, Mr. Brown called me aside and shook his head gently.
“I’m sorry, but you can’t join the team,” he said. “You’re fast and hard-working, but you’re not tall enough. Basketball requires height, and I don’t think you’ll be able to keep up with the other players.” His words felt like a knife in my heart. I thanked him and walked away quietly, trying to hold back my tears. When I got home, I locked myself in my room and cried for a long time. I felt so disappointed and hopeless, and I even threw my basketball in the corner, thinking I would never play it again.
My best friend, Tom, noticed that I was sad and came to see me every day. He knew how much basketball meant to me, so he didn’t just comfort me—he helped me find a new way forward. “Why do you let one failure stop you ” he asked. “You’re good at sports, not just basketball. What if you try swimming It doesn’t require height, and I think you’ll be good at it.” At first, I didn’t want to try anything new. I was too hurt by my failure to the basketball team, but Tom kept encouraging me, and finally, I agreed to give swimming a try.
I joined the school swimming club the next week. At first, it was very difficult. I didn’t know how to breathe correctly in the water, and I often felt tired after a few laps. But I didn’t give up. I practiced every weekend, and the coach of the swimming club was very patient, teaching me how to improve my skills. Slowly, I got better and better, and I even started to enjoy swimming. It made me feel free and relaxed, and it helped me forget the pain of failing the basketball try-out.
After six months of hard practice, I took part in the school swimming competition. I was nervous before the race, but I remembered Tom’s words and did my best. When I touched the wall at the end of the pool, I found out that I had won the second prize. I was so excited that I cried tears of joy. I ran to Tom and thanked him for never giving up on me. He smiled and said, “I knew you could do it—you just needed a new chance.”
Now, two years have passed. I’m still in the swimming club, and I’ve won several more competitions. I also keep a diary every day, just like I am now, to write down my feelings and experiences. Looking back, I’m glad that I failed the basketball try-out. It taught me that failure is not the end of the world—it’s a chance to grow and find new opportunities. I used to think that growing up meant never failing, but now I understand that growing up is about facing failure bravely, learning from it, and moving forward.
Failure is a part of life, and it’s not something to be afraid of. When one door closes, another opens, and we never know what wonderful things are waiting for us. This is the most important lesson I’ve learned, and I will carry it with me for the rest of my life.

Sometimes, family life can be hard. Our family had lots of ups and downs.
I have an elder brother and an elder sister. I’m the baby boy in the family. We grew up in a small house. My mum and dad often argued over small things. My brother and sister argued, too, and I used to argue as well.
But as I got older, I always chose to be the mediator (调解员). I would try to listen to both sides and then bring them together to make peace. “Dad, you shouldn’t say that to Mum, but Mum, try to see it in this way. Come on, we all should love each other.” This method often worked. I learned a lot while growing up in our family including understanding others, being patient and accepting that sometimes things just don’t go our way. We may say something we don’t really mean, especially when we are angry. But it’s important to calm down and try to understand each other. Of course, it’s normal to argue sometimes, yet we should also find a way to fix the problem. As long as we can reflect and treat family members with understanding and care, we can help each other out and weather the storm.

Do you get angry when your friends sing loudly or when your best friend does not wait for you after school
If you do, you need to control your feelings and stop getting angry so easily. Getting angry easily can make you lose your friends.
Gary Egeberg, an American high school teacher, wrote My Feelings Are Like Wild Animals to help you control your feelings. It tells teens how to stay cool when bad things happen to them. The book says that getting angry only makes problems worse. It cannot make them better. “Getting angry is not a natural way to act,” the book says. It is just a bad habit, like smoking. The book says you can control your anger easily, and all you have to do is to tell yourself not to be angry.
When a baby falls over, it cries only when people are watching it. Like a baby, you can only get angry if you are sure it is the right thing to do.
The book gives many suggestions to help you if you get angry easily. Here are the top three.
①Keep a record. Every time you get angry, write down why you are angry. Look at it later and you will see you get angry too easily.
②Ask your friends to stop talking to you when you get angry. This will teach you not to be angry.
③Do something different. When you get angry, walk away from the problem and go somewhere else. Try to laugh!

Years later, my plane stopped in Seattle. I called the operator (接线员) for help. To my surprise, Sally answered! I asked her to spell “fix”, just like when I was little. She laughed and said my calls made her happy all day— she had no kids, so she hoped to talk with me.

In life, we may meet problems at any time. But we might not notice them at first. Only when they start to really bother (打扰) us do we feel worried and sad.
Workplace Problems The workplace is a place where people work. You might meet people who never think you do anything right. When facing this problem, stay calm. Be kind, listen to them, and avoid arguments. You could even invite them for a cup of coffee and try to understand their points of view. This way, you can build a better connection with them and reduce pressure for yourself.
Career Pressure On your way to becoming more successful, you may face pressure at work. This can happen when you’re trying to do well in your job or move up to a better position. It can also come as a result of overworking. To deal with it, first think about whether you need to improve your skills or attitude. Maybe you need to communicate better or build stronger relationships with others. You can also learn from successful workmates by observing (观察) how they deal with things differently.
Unfair (不公平的) Treatment In our world, some people think they’re better than others and treat others unfairly. If you’re around people like this, it can make you feel upset and even affect your daily life. You can try talking to them first. But if nothing changes, it’s OK to walk away from these people.
