During a family holiday in Greece over a decade ago — when I was 16 years old — I went scuba (水肺) diving, full of excitement to experience the ocean’s legendary beauty. That fantasy was broken the moment I went down. What I saw threw me into a single, urgent question: “Why can’t we just clean this up ”
Na ve Perhaps. But I set out to try. I started looking into the problem and possible
technology solutions to clean up plastic pollution in oceans. I presented my ideas at a conference late that year. Then the next year, I founded The Ocean Cleanup, a nonprofit funded by donations and a range of charitable partners with the mission to make the oceans free of plastic.
It made sense to target what is perhaps the most recognizable symbol of our oceanic plastic problem, the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, an expanse in the North Pacific Ocean more than twice the size of Texas, where bottles, floating markers and other plastic waste build up because of
strong currents.
Working in tough oceanic conditions is a challenge, and we have encountered our share of setbacks. What kept us going was the scenes our crew encountered at sea: fish whose stomachs
were full of sharp bits of plastic, sea turtles trapped in abandoned fishing nets...
Eventually, we managed to get our system to work. Two boats pull a U-shaped barrier
through the water at low speed, which leads plastic into a collection area. The waste is pulled out, taken to the shore and recycled. We take great care to ensure that our cleanup efforts don’t harm the ecosystem in the ocean. Images of piles of plastic being pulled from the ocean have led to
accusations — people thought we staged it for show, which was not true for us.
We are still at the pilot stage now, but by our estimates, we’ve removed more than 0.2 percent of the plastic in the patch so far and our systems are only getting better. There is still a long way waiting ahead, but we are making progress.
24 .What motivated the author to found The Ocean Cleanup
A .A childhood fantasy. B .The passion for diving.
C .An undersea experience. D .The beauty of the ocean.
25 .What can we know about the Great Pacific Garbage Patch
A .Its size is much larger than expected.
B .Its existence is known to few people.
C .Its components are mainly abandoned fishing nets.

D .Its formation is closely related to water movements.
26 .What challenge did the author’s team face
A .Insufficient funding. B .Public doubts.
C .Technical difficulties. D .Equipment maintenance.
27 .What does the text mainly talk about
A .The effort to remove ocean plastic pollution.
B .The struggle to establish a nonprofit organization.
C .The complexities of cleaning up plastic waste in oceans.
D .The current situation of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.

While some writers say they’ve welcomed AI as a tool in their creative process, many other artists and creators have expressed suspicion. Seeking to examine the issue in a more scientific
angle, Oliver Hauser, an economist specializing in AI, set out to gather objective evidence on the nature of creativity itself. He invited nearly 300 people, who were not identified as professional writers, to write a short, eight-sentence story.
Around one-third of the writers had to come up with ideas on their own, while the others were given starter ideas generated by AI. Those who got help were further divided into two
subgroups: one that got a single AI-generated idea, and the other that got to choose from up to five. Crucially, both the human-only and AI-assisted groups had to write the stories themselves.
The results were judged by a group of 600 evaluators, who graded each story on its “novelty” and “usefulness”. Novelty showed the story’s originality, while usefulness was a measure of whether the story was of quality high enough to be published.
Hauser found that stories written with the help of AI were both more novel and useful.
Writers who had access to one AI idea did better, but those who had access to five ideas saw the biggest boost — they wrote stories seen as around 8% more novel than the ones created by
humans on their own, and 9% more useful. “What’s more,” Hauser says, “the worst writers benefited the most.”
So AI really does appear to make people more creative. But there’s something unexpected: When Hauser looked at all the stories, he found a different effect. “Collectively speaking, there
was a smaller diversity of novelty in the group that had AI.” In other words, AI made each
individual more creative, but it made the group that had AI help less creative. Hauser describes the result as a “classic social dilemma” .
28 .Why did Hauser carry out the research
A .To reveal AI’s influences on people’s creativity.
B .To prove that AI is more creative than human writers.
C .To remove public concerns about AI’s role in creativity.
D .To help non-professional writers improve their writing skills.
29 .What can we know about the research design
A .AI was allowed to write stories for some participants.
B .Professional writers were excluded from the research.
C .Evaluators focused more on novelty than usefulness.
D .AI-generated ideas are accessible to every participant.
30 .What is a finding of Hauser’s research
A .Writers with one AI idea performed worst.
B .Poor writers gained the least from AI help.
C .Humans outperform AI in generating original ideas.
D .AI assistance improved the quality of writers’ stories.
31 .What may happen in a “classic social dilemma”
A .Findings don’t match observations. B .Unexpected happenings occur frequently.
C.Individuals benefit while the group suffers. D.Novelty increases while usefulness decreases.

Wetlands are widely valued as natural pollution cleaners and habitats for endangered
species. Holding carbon dioxide-processing microbes (微生物) that play a key role in climate
change dynamics, they’re also a key part of the carbon cycle: Although wetlands cover only about 3% of Earth’s surface, they account for as much as 30% of soil carbon storage. Yet some wetland microbes secrete another powerful greenhouse gas — methane, which may cancel out some of the benefits of pulling carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
Tringe, an environmental microbiologist in the U. S., is trying to determine just how much
wetlands actually help counteract climate change, by turning to a novel discipline called
metagenomics, which involves sequencing (测序) the collective genetic materials of all the microbes in a given location.
Scientists use chemicals to take out the genetic material from an environmental sample — say, a cup of dirty water. They run cloned snippets (克隆片段) of the material through a
sequencing machine, which reads out what makes up each snippet. After all the data are pieced back together, they reveal the distinct gene sequences ofthe millions of microbes in the sample.
The result: a broad overview of the microbial community and the functions each microbe performs within the ecosystem.
Tringe’s sampling has brought some evidence that certain landscape characteristics
influence microbial populations in ways that affect greenhouse gas releases and carbon storage.
Saltier wetland areas, for example, tend to attract microbial communities that produce less
methane, as do areas with more active water flows. “We’re able to predict which sites might produce more or less methane,” Tringe says. Data, however, are still limited, so Tringe cannot definitively say how wetland restoration planners can best limit these releases while keeping carbon storage processes undamaged.
Ultimately, Tringe wants to create computer models allowing experts to analyze the potential greenhouse gas effects of various restoration strategies. But what fires Tringe’s
imagination even more than shaping wetlands’ environmental legacy is mapping a microbial universe that has long been hidden.
32 .What does the underlined word “secrete” in paragraph 1 probably mean
A .Give off. B .Take in. C .Figure out. D .Break down.
33 .What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A .Wetlands sampling. B .A novel discipline.
C .Metagenomic sequencing. D .Microbial communities.
34 .What are Tringe’s key findings about
A .Wetlands’ capacity for carbon storage.
B .Methane’s great impact on microbial varieties.
C .Predictive computer models for wetland restoration.
D .Links between landscape features and methane releases.

35 .What can be inferred about Tringe from the last paragraph
A .She prioritizes theoretical research.
B .She encounters technological barriers.
C .She innovates wetlands’ restoration strategies.
D .She values exploration of the microbial world more.

The bell above the door of The Book Nook, a bookstore, gave a soft ring as we stepped inside. My daughter, Lily, held the wrinkled school notice in her hand. It listed the supplies
needed for the new semester, and one item was underlined twice: “Illustrated Reference Dictionary For Young Scientists — essential for classroom use.”
We walked past the shelves of bright new notebooks and shiny pencil cases. I could feel Lily’s eyes on them, but she didn’t say anything. The schoolbag on her back, though clean, was faded at the corners. Yet, we went straight to the reference section. The dictionary was there, but the price tag made my stomach tighten.
Mr. Evans, the elderly shop owner, was sorting out books nearby. He watched as Lily
carefully pulled the heavy book out from the shelf. She opened it gently, her eyes widening at the
colorful pictures inside. I reached into my pocket, got my worn purse and began quietly counting the bills and coins I had saved from my last paycheck.
“Mom, can we...” Lily looked up, her voice barely a whisper. I knelt down, my heart aching. “Sweetheart,” I started softly, preparing to explain the hard math of our budget.
Right at that moment, a slight movement at the counter caught my eye. I glanced over. Mr. Evans, thinking himself unobserved, had just taken a brand-new copy of the dictionary from under the counter. With a focused, gentle pressure, he deliberately bent the corner of its cover, creating a small, careful crease (褶皱).
After all that, Mr. Evans walked over to us, holding up the now slightly imperfect book.
“You know, I just remembered,” he said, his voice steady and kind, “this copy came in with a
small flaw (瑕疵) on the cover. See here ” He showed Lily the barely-there crease. “It’s perfectly good inside, but it means I can’t sell it as new. It goes for a different price.”
注意:1.续写词数应为 150 个左右;
Mr. Evans looked at me and named a number.

M: Does Nick get used to it
W: Yeah. Nick loves it very much. He earns more. More importantly, he thinks it has brought us
closer.
M: Nick likes your book too, right
W: Actually, he motivates me to write everything down. At first, I submitted those articles to his newspaper, and then an editor invited me to open a column. And finally, the book.

W: Over the summer, I came across a notice for a community “Senior & Teen” program. It paired up teenagers with neighbors over 60, so I decided to give it a shot. That’s how I got
matched with Mrs. Brown, who lives alone a few streets over.
The rules were pretty straightforward: visit Mrs. Brown every Tuesday and Saturday
afternoon — for about an hour each time. Most of our sessions were about me helping her with
tech stuff, like using her phone to message, shop online, or scan old photos into a digital album. I still remember her laugh when she finally sent that album to her daughter all by herself.
We also had to turn in a short “Community Memory” each week, based on our chats. At first, I thought it was kind of a pointless assignment. But hearing Mrs. Brown’s stories about the neighborhood back in the day made me realize something: a community isn’t just houses and
streets — it’s built from all these little memories that people carry with them.

根据第一段“During a family holiday in Greece over a decade ago-when I was 16 years old — I went scuba (水肺) diving, full of excitement to experience the ocean’s legendary beauty. That fantasy was broken the moment I went down. What I saw threw me into a single,
urgent question: “Why can’t we just clean this up ”(十多年前,我 16 岁时,和家人在希腊度假。
It made sense to target what is perhaps the most recognizable
symbol of our oceanic plastic problem, the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, an expanse in the North
Pacific Ocean more than twice the size of Texas, where bottles, floating markers and other plastic waste build up because of strong currents.(把目标对准太平洋大垃圾带—— 这一或许是海洋塑料污染最具标志性的象征,是合乎情理的。
根据第五段“Images of piles of plastic being pulled from the ocean have led to accusations — people thought we staged it for show, which was not true for us.(从海洋中捞出成 堆塑料的照片招致了指责 —— 人们认为我们是在作秀,但对我们来说并非如此。)”
Then the next year, I founded The Ocean

根据第一段中“While some writers say they’ve welcomed AI as a tool in their creative process, many other artists and creators have expressed suspicion. Seeking to examine the issue in a more scientific angle, Oliver Hauser, an economist specializing in AI, set out to gather
故选 A 项。
He invited nearly 300 people, who were not identified as
根据第三段中“Hauser found that stories written with the help of AI were both more novel and useful.(Hauser 发现,在人工智能帮助下写出来的故事既更新颖又更实用)”可知,Hauser 的研究发现 AI 辅助提升了作家作品的质量。故选 D 项。
In other words, AI made each individual more creative, but it made the group that had AI help less creative. Hauser describes the result as a “classic social

文章首段“Holding carbon dioxide-processing microbes (微生物) that play a key role in climate change dynamics(它们还拥有处理二氧化碳的微生物群落)”指出湿地微生物能处理二氧化碳,同时“Yet some wetland microbes secrete another powerful greenhouse gas —
methane, which may cancel out some of the benefits of pulling carbon dioxide from the
故选 A。
Tringe, an environmental microbiologist in the U. S., is trying to
determine just how much wetlands actually help counteract climate change, by turning to a novel
discipline called metagenomics, which involves sequencing (测序) the collective genetic materials of all the microbes in a given location.(美国的环境微生物学家 Tringe 正试图通过一种名为“宏 基因组学”的新学科来确定湿地实际上在多大程度上能够抵消气候变化的影响。该学科涉及 对特定区域所有微生物的遗传物质进行测序)”提到 Tringe 运用宏基因组学(metagenomics)开展研究,该学科涉及对特定位置所有微生物的集体遗传物质进行测序;第三段“Scientists use chemicals to take out the genetic material from an environmental sample — say, a cup of dirty water. They run cloned snippets (克隆片段) of the material through a sequencing machine, which reads out what makes up each snippet. After all the data are pieced back together, they reveal the
distinct gene sequences ofthe millions of microbes in the sample.(科学家们会使用化学物质从环境样本(比如一杯脏水)中提取遗传物质。
Tringe’s sampling has brought some evidence that certain landscape characteristics influence microbial populations in ways that affect greenhouse gas releases and
carbon storage. Saltier wetland areas, for example, tend to attract microbial communities that
produce less methane, as do areas with more active water flows.(Tringe 的采样工作提供了一些

Ultimately, Tringe wants to create computer models allowing experts to analyze the potential greenhouse gas effects of various restoration strategies. But what
fires Tringe’s imagination even more than shaping wetlands’ environmental legacy is mapping a
microbial universe that has long been hidden.(最终,Tringe 希望创建计算机模型,让专家能够分析各种恢复策略可能对温室气体产生的影响。

Mr. Evans looked at me and named a number. That was exactly the sum of the cash in my hand. Relief washed over me, so strong that it tightened my throat. I placed the money on the
counter, my fingers trembling slightly. As he placed the dictionary into a bag, he added a new box of colored pencils. “This is a gift set,” he said simply. Lily clutched the bag, her eyes shining with a joy that had nothing to do with a discount. Our eyes met — Mr. Evans and I — yet no words
conveyed. In that quiet moment, a profound sense of gratitude settled over me.
On our way home, Lily held the dictionary tightly. She kept glancing down at the dictionary in her arm, gently stroking the creased cover as ifit were a precious treasure. Seeing her
happiness, I found my heart full of gratitude for Mr. Evans’ quiet, thoughtful kindness — he
didn’t just sell us a book, but preserved a little girl’s dream and a mother’s dignity without making us feel ashamed. That crease on the cover wasn’t a flaw at all; it was a mark of kindness, one that Lily and I would remember for the rest of our lives.
