The Words That Changed Everything
I still remember the day clearly. It was during 7th grade. Two classes were going to play a game outside our classrooms. I was excited to join, but a classmate refused to let me play on her team.
Her refusal was enough to make someone feel unwanted. One of my friends asked her again and again, but the mean girl did not allow me to play. Back then, at eleven years of age, I did not know that someone’s opinion should not decide my 13 . It was a terrible moment, enough to hurt my heart badly.
14 , this wasn’t the only time I felt that way. Whether at school or home, I always felt down. People often blamed (责备) me for things I didn’t do, and I felt like I was falling behind everyone in every part of life.
However, life took a turn for the better in 9th grade. I accidentally scored high in an English test. My teacher’s surprise was clear, and so was the admiration in her eyes. Her encouragement was the first drop of rain, bringing new hope and life. She liked my work and lifted my 15 with a pat on the shoulder.
That moment had an amazing effect on me—it was a push to keep the same pace (节奏), 16 me to put all my effort to score good in every subject.
My science teacher also played an important role. I remember the exact words: “Seeing such a bright kid makes my heart fill with 17 .”
The encouragement and kindness from my teacher inspired (激励) me to continue working hard.
The feelings with those 18 memories remind me how small words of kindness play a powerful role in our lives. They can cause a complete paradigm shift (范式转变). Now, I didn’t care who looked down on me, or who refused me, I was ready to face the world with confidence.
Over time, writing became my way to express what I felt inside, a way to continue the legacy (精神传承) of my teachers, in 19 kind words. I started writing poems and thoughts about life and the world around me. Each word is a step forward, helping me understand myself better and giving me courage.
Just as that small encouragement changed everything for me, I hope my words will express a message to others: kindness 20 , and small acts of encouragement can change a life.

“People spend too much time and effort trying to control anxiety(焦虑),” says Joel Minden, a doctor. “I encourage them to remember that anxiety is a normal emotion.” “If you try to escape it,” he adds, “all you’re doing is putting it more in your mind.” Here are some tips to help reduce anxiety’s negative effects.
Accept it. If you accept anxiety as part of life and part of everyone’s living experience, you can learn to manage it. This is the key of acceptance and commitment therapy(ACT) (接纳与承诺疗法).
ACT guides people to see their unpleasant emotions as just feelings and to accept that parts of life are hard. Doctors encourage patients to begin a dialogue with anxious thoughts, examining the causes of those feelings. Meanwhile, they also keep in mind patients’ personal goals and values. Although anxious thoughts shouldn’t be completely controlled, sufferers can be trained not to allow anxiety to turn them away from what they want to do and who they want to be.
Be curious about it. Paying attention to the body feelings, thoughts, and emotions that come as a result of feeling anxious or worried. When we notice and name the physical feelings that are appearing in our bodies (my face feels hot; my breathing is weak; my heart is beating quickly, etc.), we are already less caught up in those anxious emotions, simply through that act of observation (观察).
Make lifestyle improvements. Learning to live with anxiety is a personal process that requires trial-and-error(试错法) to get just right. While acceptance is the first and the most important step, some lifestyle changes have been proved to take the edge off anxiety as well.
Work out regularly (定期地). Since tiredness and increased stress leave us more likely to experience anxiety, a well-balanced diet and enough rest are helpful. Above all, exercise can help us manage it better.
Also, openly discussing anxiety has changed our relationship with it. “I’m learning to live in peace with this thing,” Minden says. “It’s not always pleasant, but I accept and, to the degree that I can, take care of my anxiety.”
27.According to the passage, what is the key of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
A.Escaping from anxiety.
B.Avoiding anxious thoughts.
C.Controlling anxiety completely.
D.Accepting anxiety as part of life.
28.According to the passage, who is probably best at managing anxiety
A.A person who does sports weekly and has balanced meals.
B.A person who avoids thinking about anxiety and stays up late.
C.A person who tries to hide anxious thoughts without changing habits.
D.A person who depends on medicine every day to stop feeling anxious.
29.What’s the passage mainly about
A.The causes of anxiety in daily life.
B.The methods of dealing with anxiety.
C.The ways of controlling anxiety completely.
D.The effects of anxiety on social relationships.
D
In many areas of life, people compete even when it does not benefit them. Office workers stay late at work to avoid looking lazy. On social media, people feel pressured to post perfect photos. These situations all come from a problem called the theater effect, which explains why people find it hard to stop competing, even when it is unnecessary.
The theater effect happens when one person tries to do better, forcing others to follow. In the end, everyone works harder, but no one truly benefits. Imagine watching a movie—if the people in front stand up, those behind must stand too. Finally, everyone is standing, but the view remains the same.
A well-known experiment at Stanford University tested this idea. Researchers invited 200 people to bid (竞标) for a $100 bill. The highest bidder won, but the second-highest still had to pay. At first, bids were small, but as the price neared $100, people refused to stop. Some even bid more than $100 just to avoid losing their earlier bids. This irrational behavior shows that once competition begins, people realize that it’s hard to stop competing, even when it no longer makes sense.
The theater effect comes from early human survival instincts (本能). Back then, the dopamine system (多巴胺系统) in our brain made us feel good about short-term success, like catching food, because it ensured survival. Today, this same system drives us to aim for victory in competitions—even when the results are meaningless. However, modern life is different. Today, while basic needs are no longer a big problem for us, we should learn to think clearly.
Then how can we stop this kind of useless competition First, we should know that we don’t need to win all the time to prove our value. Real growth means doing better than before, not better than others. Second, we should take a moment to ask ourselves, “Are we doing it because we truly enjoy it, or just because we are afraid to be left behind ” Another important point is to aim for meaningful goals, not just to win. Focus on what truly matters, and feel peace in your heart—that is how we find real happiness.
So next time you feel pressured to “stand up”, just because others do, ask yourself: Is this really the best choice for me
30.According to the passage, which is probably the example of the theater effect
A.A family enjoys a quiet dinner without surfing the internet.
B.A company gives praise to workers for their continual efforts.
C.People set a long-term goal to exercise more for better health.
D.Students sign up for more classes because others are doing so.
31.What does the word “irrational” in Paragraph 3 most probably mean
A.Unreasonable. B.Worthless. C.Meaningful. D.Beneficial.
32.The writer probably agrees that ________.
A.joining in competitions is a good way to show your value
B.it is wise to stop and think before joining in a competition
C.competition is important and always helps us move forward
D.following others is a safe way to avoid making wrong choices
33.What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage
A.To compare research findings on over-competition.
B.To guide people to go for more successful achievements.
C.To encourage people to care less about their basic needs.
D.To advise readers to make choices that truly suit themselves.

September is a big month for students in China since the new term begins from now on. In ancient China, the school entrance ceremony (入学典礼) was one of the most important ceremonies.
Children began school between the ages of 4~7 in ancient China. Since there was no certain time to begin a new term at that time, the most important thing for parents was to choose a lucky day for their children to enter school. Next, parents would prepare some school things for their children, including desks, chairs and four treasures of the study.
In ancient times, teachers were usually very knowledgeable local persons. Parents would prepare many gifts, and then write a letter of invitation to ask a knowledgeable man to be their children’s teacher.
On the day their children entered school, parents would take them to take part in the First Writing Ceremony. Before that, children would kowtow (叩头) to the statue of Confucius nine times and then to their teacher three times in order to show their deep respect. During the ceremony, the teacher would put a red point on each student’s forehead (前额) as it meant opening the wisdom eye. Children would also ring a certain bell to start a new term. After that, they could finally sit down in their seats and begin to study. The First Writing Ceremony was a very important ceremony for every student.
Every day, students would arrive at school earlier than their teacher, and kowtow to the statue of Confucius, and then go back to the seats. Usually the teacher would give every student a new name which was used for future Imperial Examination (科举考试).
Today, some schools are starting to hold an entrance ceremony like ancient schools did. Students put on traditional clothes and bow to the statue of Confucius and their teachers. This means that from this moment, they take a step in the life-long journey of learning.

例文
Dear Peter,
I’m glad you’re interested in Chinese traditional festivals.
My favorite Chinese traditional festival is the Spring Festival. As the most important festival for all Chinese, it is celebrated on the first day of the first lunar month.
I usually spend the Spring Festival with my family. In the morning, we put up Chinese New Year decorations on doors and windows and then pay New Year visits to our relatives and friends. We also send our greetings to people who live far away by telephone or through the Internet. At noon, we have a family reunion dinner together. It is not just about eating. The family also wish each other good luck. And the best thing about Chinese New Year is fireworks. In the evening, we go outside and watch the fireworks go off in the sky. The sky becomes so bright and everybody cheers. It is very exciting.
All in all, the Spring Festival is fantastic during which I can always have great fun. That’s why I like it so much.
I hope you’ll enjoy learning about it.
Yours,
Li Hua

39.例文
Each time we have a try, it’s a chance to grow up. Last year, I decided to join the school’s English speech contest. For a shy girl like me, it was a big challenge. I spent weekends revising my speech, practicing in front of mirrors again and again. On the day of the contest, my knees were shaking, but I kept telling myself, “Even if I make a mistake, I’ll learn something valuable!”
I didn’t win the first prize, but my classmates cheered loudly for me. My teacher gave me a thumbs-up. Now I have learned that trying is as important as winning.
