“There is no way I can live out of a suitcase!” I thought as we packed up our home in Venice, Italy. At fourteen years old, I couldn’t imagine leaving my friends, school, and all my “stuff” behind to travel the world full-time with my family. That was when my mom had the idea of dropping everything to travel the world and create a deeper connection between family members. Although I absolutely loved the idea of traveling the world freely, I couldn’t imagine leaving my life behind.
To my surprise, during the travel, we have learned the most important moments are when we live happy moments with our family and friends. As we travel, we barely carry anything with us except the essential things like clothes, a laptop, notebooks, and toiletries. We each carry a backpack and all five of us share two suitcases for clothes. After buying new souvenirs or new clothes, we give some of our old outfits away to people in need and it makes us so happy to be able to give back wherever we can.
We now know that experiences and memories are the most valuable things in life and that they can only be acquired when we let go of our need for possessions and focus on what really matters in life — enjoying our lives each day with the people we love.
19.What was the author’s initial feeling about the idea of traveling the world
A.Anxious and fearful. B.Interested but doubtful.
C.Pleased and excited. D.Confused but hopeful.
20.Why did the author’s mom decide to travel the world
A.To build stronger family bonds. B.To escape their current life.
C.To enrich their travel experiences. D.To ease the work pressure.
21.What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A.We should let go of every single possession.
B.Material wealth and possessions bring happiness.
C.The family used to place too much emphasis on wealth.
D.Material possessions should not be our ultimate goal.
Travel is one of the most exciting experiences a human being can have. Imagine how Italian traveler Marco Polo must have felt when he found himself in China, seeing a way of life quite different from anything he’d seen before.
Although travel is often just for recreation, it’s also educational. We may not know that we are getting an education, but we still are. We’re learning every day: new words, new people, and new ways of life. But this learning takes place in the school of the world, not just the classroom. One of the lessons we learn is undoubtedly a moral one. As we get to know foreign places, we come to understand that there are many different ways to live, and that the way we live isn’t necessarily the best way. Just like British politician Benjamin Disraeli said, “Travel teaches toleration”.
22.Why does the author mention Marco Polo
A.To explain how the Silk Road was founded. B.To present travel as an amazing experience.
C.To show how the way people travel has changed. D.To describe important cultural exchanges in history.
23.What can we know from the last paragraph
A.Traveling should be included in formal education.
B.Traveling improves people's confidence in their lifestyle.
C.There is more to learn in classroom than from adventures.
D.A foreign journey may raise people's cultural understanding.
24.According to the passage, what is one of the key moral lessons that travel teaches
A.The importance of staying at home.
B.The value of exploring new places.
C.The necessity of being tolerant of different cultures.
D.The idea that one's own culture is better than others.
This might sound impossibly old-fashioned, but I still like the idea that education is about learning: facts, skills, culture, analysis, inspiration. It’s supposed to make us better citizens. But over the last decade, the goal of learning has given way to grades and degrees. The unfortunate result has been inflation of both. They rise ever higher; learning doesn’t.
To avoid discouraging students, some school districts did away with D and F grades. Grade-point averages have consistently risen even though scores on nationwide standardized exams such as SAT have not. It’s not that I think standardized tests are the final word in measuring excellence. But when the gaps between grades and test scores are this wide and consistent, parents and the public should not be fooled.
Unearned grades are damaging in many ways. Some students, armed with good grades, march off to college to find themselves in remedial classes because they haven’t learned enough to take college-level courses. Employers complain that high school and even college graduates lack basic skills needed in the workforce.
25.According to the passage, what has happened to the goal of education in the past decade
A.It has focused more on cultivating better citizens.
B.It has gradually been replaced by the pursuit of grades and degrees.
C.It has emphasized learning facts, skills, and culture more than before.
D.It has become closely related to nationwide standardized exams.
26.Why do some school districts cancel D and F grades
A.To encourage students to work harder. B.To make grade-point averages more accurate.
C.To avoid making students feel discouraged. D.To match the results of standardized exams.
27.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage
A.The Importance of Standardized Exams B.How to Improve Education Quality
C.Grade Inflation: A Threat to Real Learning D.Students’ Struggle for Higher Grades

Senior high school life is busy but exciting. The courses are more challenging than before, especially maths and physics. At first, I felt a little confused, but I’ve learned to make a study plan and preview lessons before class. My teachers and classmates are friendly and always ready to help.
After school, I joined the basketball club. It’s a great way to relax and make new friends. I also volunteer at the community library on weekends, which gives me a sense of responsibility.
I hope to improve my English and make more friends this term. I believe I can adapt to the new life and achieve my goals.
What about your school life I’m looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
