Seed drill (播种机)Chinese farmers generally planted seeds (种子) by hand, which was time-consuming and inefficient (费时低效). Most of the seeds never developed because of pests (害虫) and bad weather. Deep drilling (钻孔) technologyThe Chinese developed drilling technology to get brine (盐水) from under the earth’s surface. As the deep drilling technology slowly improved, the Chinese were able to drill holes over 3,000 feet deep at the end of the 11th century. The same technology was used to drill the first petroleum well (油井) in California in the 1860s.
Compass (指南针)The Chinese considered south as their cardinal (基本的) direction, and the original (起初的) compass was created by the Chinese using a lodestone (天然磁石).The ancient Chinese discovered that a lodestone could turn freely and would point towards the north and south poles. How many times have you found yourself in conversations with friends, family members or loved ones and discovered that you had completely shut off what they were saying How much of our attention are we truly giving to the people who are supposed to be important to us
According to a research by Wright State University, while most people believe they are good listeners who don’t need to improve their listening skills, the average person (一般人) only listens at about 25 percent efficiency (效率).
So why aren’t we better listeners As a society, we may be growing more narcissistic (自恋的). A 2022 study found a rise in self-centeredness and narcissism among college students. If we, as a culture, are becoming more self-centered, how can we, as individuals (个体), work to become more caring communicators
We can begin by changing our attitudes toward conversations. As Stephen R. Covey wrote in his book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People: Powerful Lessons in Personal Change, “Most people do not listen with the intention (意图) to understand but to reply.” A dialogue is a chance to learn, to see things from a new perspective (视角), to open your eyes to new information and possibilities. Yet, too often we communicate as if it’s a debate (辩论). We speak to hear our own voices. In doing so, we can space out when spoken to. We wait, perhaps even patiently or politely, for the other person to finish, so we can say something we feel is of value.
Wilson Mizner said, “A good listener is not only popular everywhere, but after a while, he knows something.” Listening doesn’t just enrich our knowledge on an intellectual (智力的) level; it also enables us to have a more personal, in-depth understanding of our closest friends. Relationships are truly enriched by an equal (平等的) back-and-forth exchange in communication. When these dynamics (动态) become more one-sided, we may lose interest and create distance (疏远) in our friendships, with less trust built and less honesty exchanged.
Maybe we aren’t as good listeners as we believe. Do we focus too much on ourselves—both in positive and negative ways Do we get distracted by an inner coach, rather than living in the moment and really focusing on what’s being said Thankfully, we can all improve our listening skills. As we learn to quiet that inner voice in our minds, we can start to open ourselves up to others, becoming better listeners, thinkers, lovers and friends.
36.Why does the writer ask the questions in Paragraph 1
A.To show most people are confident about their listening skills.
B.To point out the fact that people have low efficiency in listening.
C.To provide information about how people behave in conversation.
D.To express his worries about people’s shortage of attention when talking.
37.What does the underlined phrase “space out” in Paragraph 4 mean
A.Stay focused. B.Feel confused. C.Be absent-minded. D.Remain nervous.
38.Which of the following statements would the writer agree with
A.We should speak to hear our own voices and opinions.
B.People should listen to learn and see things from a new way.
C.Most people listen with the intention to understand, not to reply.
D.A good listener is popular but does not necessarily know everything.
39.What would be the best title for this passage
A.Why We Should Listen More and Speak Less
B.How We Can Improve Listening Skills Efficiently
C.The Influence of Narcissism on Social Communication
D.The Lower Efficiency of Listening in Modern Society

In the US, baseball players rub (涂抹) a kind of mud on the balls before games. This mud is collected in New Jersey along the Delaware River. The tradition started in the 1930s. Many players say this “magic” mud can help them win. But is this science or just superstition (迷信)
Since 2019, scientists from the University of Pennsylvania in the US have been studying the mud. They noticed that it is different from other muds. “It feels like sandpaper when you hold it, but then you can spread it like a cream.” Shravan Pradeep, one of the scientists, told Popular Science.
To understand why, the scientists did some experiments. They used a special instrument to see how the mud spreads and then examined the mud under a microscope (显微镜). They found that the mud is very fine, as if there is no sand in it. It is also sticky, but becomes less so after it dries.
Next, the scientists wanted to see if the mud helps players hold the baseball better. They made a material that feels like skin and put a special oil on it, like the kind found on human skin. When the scientists used the oiled material to rub mud on a baseball, they discovered the mud increased friction (摩擦力). This makes it more difficult for the ball to get out of the players’ hands.
The scientists were amazed to find that the mud has just the right stickiness (粘性), spreadability (铺展性) and friction all at once. “We just didn’t expect (this),” said Paulo Arratia, another scientist in the group.
The scientists hope their research will encourage more people to study natural materials. They believe nature can teach us a lot about making better materials in the future.
40.What does the mud feel like when baseball players hold the balls
A.Sandpaper. B.A cream. C.Skin. D.A special oil.
41.Which of the following is TRUE

Self-driving cars do not have people telling them what to do. 43 . That is learning about the environment, deciding what to do next, and taking action.

This process (过程) is called multi-sensor fusion (多传感器融合). Machine learning plays an important role here because it helps the car recognize (识别) people and objects. 46 .
Finally, to carry out decisions, the car uses drive-by-wire technology (线控技术). 47 . This makes different parts of the car respond (作出反应) quickly. The car also uses less oil this way, which is good for the environment.

This special piece was made out of hundreds of thousands of sorghum stalks and took him two years to complete without the use of any nails (钉子) or glue. “It completely depends on interlocking, tenon-and-mortise structures (榫卯结构),” the man in his thirties explains. The sorghum straw art requires lots of patience, especially for works showing images (想象) of ancient buildings. They usually take several months or even one to two years to complete.
Moreover, all the beams (横梁) and columns (柱子) are straightened after being heated over a lamp. It’s the only way that every door and window can open and close properly. The sorghum straw art follows strict standards from material selection (选择) to production.
Xu has grown sorghum in his farmland, and chooses those of the highest quality to create straw works. The sorghum stalks range from the finest at 1.8 millimeters to the thickest at 12 millimeters. Almost every piece includes hundreds of crafting steps. Xu doesn’t waste the leftover (剩下的) stalks, either, as he turns them into windmills (风车).
