Saying that those two weeks were an unexpected journey is no exaggeration (夸张). When I applied for a spot
on an exchange program in Chengdu, I never thought I’d actually be selected. Before going to China, my
experience of Chinese cuisine was limited to lemon chicken, pot noodles, and fried rice. So, in preparation for my
trip to China, I was mentally preparing myself for the worst.
Eating turned out to be a pleasant surprise. When visiting Dujiangyan, three Chinese students took me to a
restaurant. I spent about ten minutes using Google Translate to decide what to eat. After deciding what I wanted, I
asked for their help with my order. They laughed and said they’d already ordered for the whole table. Sharing is a
big part of how food is consumed there. You don’t order for yourself; you all order as a group. Every meal feels
like a family dinner. It’s a very warm experience that we all greatly appreciated.
Getting along with others was one of the worrisome thoughts before my arrival although I was repeatedly told
by my friends and family that I would make friends for life. It turned out my scepticism was severely misplaced.
On the first day of classes, we all got to meet our Southwestern University of Finance and Economics (SWUFE)
students who were there to help and guide us, and they all ended up meaning so much more to us. For two weeks,
we honestly felt like a big family.
Finally, I wanted to give some advice to any students considering this program. Try to get a SIM card so you
are able to access mobile Internet. Learn the basics of the language. You’ll also probably find that you’ll pick up
other words along the way. If you are part of the SWUFE program, bring lots of gifts. I didn’t think I would get as
close to so many students as I did, so I didn’t pack enough gifts. Travelling can be a little scary but if you just stay
calm, you will find that it’s really an enjoyable experience.

The teacher starts with the basics: how to thread a needle (穿针引线). Then, over the course of the next 30
minutes, she shows the students a few different stitches (缝法), along with how to mend a torn shirt. This is not a
lesson at some outdated finishing school. The class is part of a free, one-day course at Austin Community College
(ACC) called “Adulting 101”. The students range in age from their late teens to mid-40s.
ACC has been running such programmes for six-years. The workshops are designed to help people live as
adults successfully even those who have been adults for quite some time. The topics range from how to dress

Raffi Grinberg, an author, created and taught “Adulting 101” at Boston College. The inspiration for his class
came from his first day working at Bain & Company, a management consultancy, soon after he left university. He
and other newcomers had to decide which health insurance plan to choose, how much of his income to devote to
saving for retirement and other financial details. “Every one of us called our parents,” he admits, “We were
graduates of really good schools, and we still didn’t know what to do.”
Why are such courses needed To many, these skills will sound like basic common sense. Yet, as the saying
goes, common sense is not so common. The rise in the need for adulting classes reflects, in part, the changing
nature of childhood and adolescence (青少年时期), which have grown more digital and less physical. American
teenagers spend up to nine hours each day on screens. Social media do offer handy lessons on all manner of
household chores. But most young users of these platforms are more interested in dancing than dishwashers.
Many will see adulting classes as evidence that young people are not fully developed. But coddled (被溺爱的)
children do not admit the gaps in their knowledge and try to fill them. Only a grown-up would willingly spend
precious free time doing something as boring as learning how to mend a shirt.

Maybe you’ve often dreamed of sitting an exam even if you haven’t been a student for decades, or you’ve
recently started revisiting a particular place while asleep. If so, you’re far from alone.
Research shows that up to 75% percent of adults experience at least one recurring (再发生的) dream during
their lifetime. These dreams sometimes are nearly identical each time they occur, but they may also have recurring
themes, locations, or characters set against different backgrounds. New research is helping better identify patterns
in recurring dreams’ frequency and content, as well as in the situations that lead to them.
Recent studies have found that recurring dreams are often — but not always — bad ones. In a 2022 survey
by Michael Schredl, professor at the Central Institute of Mental Health in Germany, and his colleagues, adults
flagged recurring dreams as “negatively toned” two-thirds of the time; these dreams often touched on themes such
as being attacked, arriving somewhere late or failing at something. The reasons why we might have a greater
tendency to have negative dreams are not fully understood, but Schredl says dreams typically overdramatize
something in our waking life — even a small feeling or slight situation we feel powerless to change.
Psychology and neuroscience offer additional clues. For example, we are subject to what’s known as
negativity bias (偏见): a tendency to focus more on unpleasant thoughts, emotions, or social interactions than on
positive ones. This behavior is rooted in our subconscious (潜 意 识 的 ) need to solve negative situations that
threaten our survival. Negativity bias may be strengthened in sleep because our dreaming brain weakens the areas
associated with linear logic and activates parts associated with emotion, weakening the screen between our
thoughts and our feelings.
There are tips to control negative recurring dreams. Some people have found success in a practice called
imagery rehearsal therapy, in which they repeatedly reimagine their nightmares (噩梦) with happier endings before
going to sleep. Nirit Soffer-Dudek, a psychologist, also recommends developing good “sleep hygiene.” By setting a
consistent sleep schedule, limiting screen use, and avoiding caffeine before bed, “you’re less likely to fall asleep
while still in a heightened emotional state,” she says.

How to use the newsletter

also serve as a reference point to you, depending on the activities that go with the particular piece of news.
ACTIVITY: A task or tasks for students to work on in the classroom. Each newsletter contains a set of questions
related to the news. You might ask students to discuss all of them or just some of them. If you teach lower-level

Saying that those two weeks were an unexpected journey is no exaggeration (夸张). When I applied for a spot
on an exchange program in Chengdu, I never thought I’d actually be selected. Before going to China, my
experience of Chinese cuisine was limited to lemon chicken, pot noodles, and fried rice. So, in preparation for my
trip to China, I was mentally preparing myself for the worst.
Eating turned out to be a pleasant surprise. When visiting Dujiangyan, three Chinese students took me to a
restaurant. I spent about ten minutes using Google Translate to decide what to eat. After deciding what I wanted, I
asked for their help with my order. They laughed and said they’d already ordered for the whole table. Sharing is a
big part of how food is consumed there. You don’t order for yourself; you all order as a group. Every meal feels
like a family dinner. It’s a very warm experience that we all greatly appreciated.
Getting along with others was one of the worrisome thoughts before my arrival although I was repeatedly told
by my friends and family that I would make friends for life. It turned out my scepticism was severely misplaced.
On the first day of classes, we all got to meet our Southwestern University of Finance and Economics (SWUFE)
students who were there to help and guide us, and they all ended up meaning so much more to us. For two weeks,
we honestly felt like a big family.
Finally, I wanted to give some advice to any students considering this program. Try to get a SIM card so you
are able to access mobile Internet. Learn the basics of the language. You’ll also probably find that you’ll pick up
other words along the way. If you are part of the SWUFE program, bring lots of gifts. I didn’t think I would get as
close to so many students as I did, so I didn’t pack enough gifts. Travelling can be a little scary but if you just stay
calm, you will find that it’s really an enjoyable experience.

The teacher starts with the basics: how to thread a needle (穿针引线). Then, over the course of the next 30
minutes, she shows the students a few different stitches (缝法), along with how to mend a torn shirt. This is not a
lesson at some outdated finishing school. The class is part of a free, one-day course at Austin Community College
(ACC) called “Adulting 101”. The students range in age from their late teens to mid-40s.
ACC has been running such programmes for six-years. The workshops are designed to help people live as
adults successfully even those who have been adults for quite some time. The topics range from how to dress
appropriately for a job interview to how to file income taxes.
Raffi Grinberg, an author, created and taught “Adulting 101” at Boston College. The inspiration for his class
came from his first day working at Bain & Company, a management consultancy, soon after he left university. He
and other newcomers had to decide which health insurance plan to choose, how much of his income to devote to
saving for retirement and other financial details. “Every one of us called our parents,” he admits, “We were
graduates of really good schools, and we still didn’t know what to do.”
Why are such courses needed To many, these skills will sound like basic common sense. Yet, as the saying
goes, common sense is not so common. The rise in the need for adulting classes reflects, in part, the changing
nature of childhood and adolescence (青少年时期), which have grown more digital and less physical. American
teenagers spend up to nine hours each day on screens. Social media do offer handy lessons on all manner of
household chores. But most young users of these platforms are more interested in dancing than dishwashers.
Many will see adulting classes as evidence that young people are not fully developed. But coddled (被溺爱的)
children do not admit the gaps in their knowledge and try to fill them. Only a grown-up would willingly spend
precious free time doing something as boring as learning how to mend a shirt.

Maybe you’ve often dreamed of sitting an exam even if you haven’t been a student for decades, or you’ve
recently started revisiting a particular place while asleep. If so, you’re far from alone.
Research shows that up to 75% percent of adults experience at least one recurring (再发生的) dream during
their lifetime. These dreams sometimes are nearly identical each time they occur, but they may also have recurring
themes, locations, or characters set against different backgrounds. New research is helping better identify patterns
in recurring dreams’ frequency and content, as well as in the situations that lead to them.
Recent studies have found that recurring dreams are often — but not always — bad ones. In a 2022 survey
by Michael Schredl, professor at the Central Institute of Mental Health in Germany, and his colleagues, adults
flagged recurring dreams as “negatively toned” two-thirds of the time; these dreams often touched on themes such
as being attacked, arriving somewhere late or failing at something. The reasons why we might have a greater
tendency to have negative dreams are not fully understood, but Schredl says dreams typically overdramatize
something in our waking life — even a small feeling or slight situation we feel powerless to change.
Psychology and neuroscience offer additional clues. For example, we are subject to what’s known as
negativity bias (偏见): a tendency to focus more on unpleasant thoughts, emotions, or social interactions than on
positive ones. This behavior is rooted in our subconscious (潜 意 识 的 ) need to solve negative situations that
threaten our survival. Negativity bias may be strengthened in sleep because our dreaming brain weakens the areas
associated with linear logic and activates parts associated with emotion, weakening the screen between our
thoughts and our feelings.
There are tips to control negative recurring dreams. Some people have found success in a practice called
imagery rehearsal therapy, in which they repeatedly reimagine their nightmares (噩梦) with happier endings before
going to sleep. Nirit Soffer-Dudek, a psychologist, also recommends developing good “sleep hygiene.” By setting a
consistent sleep schedule, limiting screen use, and avoiding caffeine before bed, “you’re less likely to fall asleep
while still in a heightened emotional state,” she says.
