Maddux Alexander Springer, a Hawaiian teen, now 18, first saw the green sea turtles (绿海龟) covering the
sea floor while on his free dives in Kane’ ohe Bay, on the eastern side of Oahu. They were covered in
cauliflower-like tumors (肿瘤), because of FP, a disease that affects up to 97% of sea turtles worldwide. Usually, it
remains inactive, but once the illness becomes activated, tumors grow first on the outside and then sometimes the
inside of turtles. While the tumors themselves are not dangerous, they can get in the way of breathing and eating,
leading to severe results.
After not finding enough answers about the illness taking its toll on Hawaii’s turtles, Springer set out to do his
own research. He wanted to figure out what was activating the FP in Hawaii’s turtles. He set up a network of
underwater motion-sensing cameras to survey the turtle population, which revealed that FP was widespread, and
the turtles were consuming a significant amount of invasive algae (入侵藻类). Springer suspected invasive algae
was turning nitrogen from waste into arginine, an amino acid linked to FP. He collected algae samples and
confirmed high arginine levels in the turtles’ main food source.
While his study hasn’t been peer-reviewed he received the Peggy Scripps Award for Science Communication,
which gave him $10, 000 towards his education. Springer plans to study marine biology (海洋生物学) at Oregon
State University in the fall. He hopes that his project will help bring attention to the crisis in Hawaii. He states, “I
want to raise awareness that this is an issue, and that the only way that this can be solved is by government
intervention.”
The state has committed to replacing all cesspools (化粪池) by 2050. But that’s not soon enough to avoid
disastrous consequences for the turtles and the entire ecosystem, including humans. In May, the government passed
a bill charging property owners who have cesspools fees to help fund cesspool alternatives. However, that will only
put a dent in the costs expected to turn cesspools into modern wastewater management systems. Hopefully, as they
reach voting age, Springer’s peers will follow his lead and be effective advocates for clean water.
4. How do tumors impact turtles
A. They lead turtles to become poisonous.
B. They can affect turtles’ breathing and eating.
C. They cause changes in turtles swimming patterns.
D. They result in turtles’ reduced internal body function.
5. What did Springer expect to find out
A. The spread rate of FP among turtles. B. The differences in algae varieties.
C. The treatments for tumors in turtles. D. The reason for FP activation in turtles.
6. What is Springer likely to do next
A. Request government aid. B. Conduct extensive experiments.
C. Study marine biology at university. D. Employ some experts in his field.
7. What is the purpose of the passed bill
A. To lower the voting age. B. To raise awareness about wastewater risks.
C. To encourage cesspool replacement. D. To promote responsible water usage habits.

Soon after Anita Cajas and Vinicio Bacuilima started farming their land, they faced a major problem. In Anita’
s words, they soon had “a large number of birds” that feasted on their precious crops.
Then, a man stopped on the road outside their house, and asked the couple if he could take photographs of the
birds on the property. Afterwards, he suggested that instead of trying to remove the birds, they should learn to live
alongside them, and Maraksacha Reserve was born. Today, Anita credits this man, the celebrated bird photographer
Manu Espinosa, with changing their lives.
Birding tourism is thriving in Ecuador, with increasing numbers of specialist tour groups, local bird guides and
wildlife lodges (小屋). The country is home to more than 1,600 different species in an area only slightly larger than
the UK. As the business of birding grows, more and more subsistence (勉强维持生活) farmers are transitioning
their land from agriculture to bird reserves, benefiting not just the birds, but the country’s economy too.
Angie Drake, a tourism expert, says by improving biodiversity and reaching out to wildlife tourists, some
farmers have expanded their land’s potential far beyond the traditional farming model.
One family, the Ajilas, have devoted their lives to saving one of South America’s most unusual species; the
long-wattled umbrellabird. On his land, landowner Luis Ajila has switched from dairy farming to conservation,
replanting trees and promoting the site to wildlife tourists.
“Wildlife tourism is far more profitable than farming but that’s not the only reason we made the change,” says
Ajila’s son, Luis Jr. “We wanted to save not just the umbrellabird, but all the special creatures here, and protect
them for future generations.”
Of course the income provided by birders alone has been enough to motivate some farmers to take up the
nature reserve model. At Finca La Victoriana, the owner Jacqui bought the land, and began to reforest the site while
growing crops to feed herself. But once, all her crops were stolen. She was saved from having to sell up by a
visiting friend, who heard an unusual sound from lower down the valley and realised this was one of South
America’s most attractive birds; the Andean cock-of-the-rock.
8. What contributed to the construction of Maraksacha Reserve
A. The birding tourism’s popularity. B. A bird photographer’s suggestion.
C. The farmers’ desire to make a high profit. D. An initiative to protect highly- prized bird species.
9. What does the underlined word “thriving” mean in paragraph 4
A. Unique. B. Important. C. Booming. D. Rewarding.
10. What can we infer about the Ajilas
A. They are environmentally aware. B. They are well- regarded by tourists.
C. They miss the old farming days. D. They expect more prized bird species.
11. How did Jacqui’s friend save her from selling up
A. By gifting her a piece of land. B. By establishing a nature reserve for her.
C. By bringing back her lost crops. D. By discovering a rare and valuable bird.
D
The Benjamin Franklin effect is a concept in pop psychology which suggests that if Alice does a favor for Bob,
then Alice will be more likely to do more things for Bob in the future. The usual explanation for this effect is that it
works by changing the giver’s self-concept. Once you do someone a favor, you automatically think of yourself as
the recipient’s friend, and you’ll be more likely to do friendly things for them going forward.
While I’ve observed a real effect like this, it’s different from the usual story in subtle but important ways. Here’
s what I think is actually going on: Requesting a favor from a stranger or acquaintance (泛泛之交) has two
important components. There’s a request for charity, and an overture (友好姿态) to partnership. People often want
to provide limited charity on the basis of generosity, civic responsibility or some such, but are willing to pour more
effort into partnering with good allies (盟友). As the Franklin effect relies on the overture to partnership, the charity
component contributes to the early steps of the process but is otherwise irrelevant as far as turning one- off favors
into ongoing relationships.
When you request a favor, many people will evaluate your suitability as a partner subconsciously (潜意识地)
and everyone will notice whether you act like a good one afterwards. This includes showing due appreciation, as
well as doing favors in return.
I sometimes see my friends try to use the self-concept model of the Franklin effect to get support from
influential customers. They’ll try to get a favor, not because the favor is useful in itself, but because it represents a
step forward in the ongoing project of catching the customer’s eye. But it rarely turns into anything lasting in the
way my friend wants. Because they lack the fundamentals that would allow them to become a good friend or ally,
my friend can only ask for charity, which by itself is not a foundation for an ongoing relationship. All this is to say
that the Franklin effect doesn’t cheat people into helping you. Rather, it’s an audition (试镜) that gives you a
chance to demonstrate your worth.
12. What is the main idea behind the Benjamin Franklin effect
A. Charity leads to lasting friendships. B. Generosity builds up social capital.
C. Giving raises receivers’ self-respect. D. Doing favors enhances relationships.
13. What role does the act of charity play in building lasting relationships
A. It initiates connections. B. It ensures equal partnership.
C. It strengthens responsibility. D. It develops immediate trust.
14. What do people typically do when asked to do a favor
A. Expect greater favors in return. B. Assess the requester’s people skills.
C. Handle subconscious influences. D. Consider the potential for future partnerships.
15. What does the author suggest in the last paragraph
A. It’s easy for us to be fooled by the Franklin effect.
B. Personal value is crucial for a long-term partnership.
C. The self-concept model may turn into lasting attention.
D. The Franklin effect helps to extend one’s influence.

recommended once a month. However, this flower does not require the use of pesticides across the U.S.
Honeysuckle
One reason why you may want to replace grass with honeysuckle is its outstanding beauty. ___19___ If you
would love to enjoy some time with wild insects consider honeysuckle. Honeysuckle can be quite particular when it
comes to the nature of soil. However, it has deep roots and does not require regular watering.

Early in my teaching career, I heard countless excuses — most of them made up, many of them amusing —
for why students didn’t have their homework. And, yes, “the dog ate it” was one of them. As time passed and I
grew less gullible (易受骗的) , I grew tired of hearing “I don’t have my homework because …” So I quit accepting
any excuse except for situations involving a confirmed family emergency.
When I was transferred to an inner-city middle school, I took my no-nonsense attitude with me. “No excuses,
no extensions!” I warned my eighth graders on the first day of school. I collected homework at the beginning of
each class. When a student didn’t have it, I never asked why. Instead, I sighed loudly, shook my head with obvious
disappointment and — with the student looking on — recorded a zero in the grade book. I soon gained the
reputation I thought I wanted.
Then, one afternoon, shortly after the dismissal bell (放学铃声) rang, Anthony approached me. “Could I talk
to you a minute ” he asked shyly, not taking his eyes off the floor. “I know you said it doesn’t matter why we don’t
have our homework, but I don’t want you to think I’m lazy because I come to school without mine so often.”
Anthony looked up at me for the first time, and I could see that his lower lip was shaking. “It’s just that… well,
my parents wait tables at night, so I have to take care of my little brothers. Sometimes they cry a lot, and it makes it
hard to concentrate.” His words conveyed a deep sense of responsibility and a heartfelt request for understanding. It
was clear that Anthony carried a heavy burden (负担) beyond his years, struggling to balance family duties with his
education.
注意:1. 续写词数应为 150 个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡上的相应位置作答。

Reflecting on a Decade: Celebrating the English Club’s Anniversary
As our English Club celebrates its 10th anniversary, I feel extremely proud and grateful. I really enjoy English
corners, speech contests and movie-watching activities. They not only improved my listening and speaking skills
but also helped me make new friends and build up great confidence. I have become much braver to express myself
in English.
I sincerely hope the club will hold more colorful activities and inspire more students. May it keep thriving and
stay energetic for many more wonderful years!

I put my hand on Anthony’s thin shoulder. My heart ached as I looked into his eyes, full of sadness and
helplessness. I realized I had been so strict and cold that I never truly listened to my students. I apologized to
Anthony gently, telling him I understood his difficult situation and that he was not lazy at all. Instead, he was a
responsible and caring brother. I promised I would find a way to help him so he could finish his homework without
so much pressure. A smile of relief appeared on his face, and he thanked me softly before leaving.
The next day, I announced to all my students that I’d be offering an after-school study hall Monday through
Friday. I explained that anyone who needed a quiet place to work or had family problems could stay and finish
their homework with my help. I also told them I no longer believed in “no excuses” without listening first. The
classroom was quiet for a moment, then filled with quiet cheers. From that day on, I learned that teaching was not
just about rules and grades, but about understanding, kindness, and seeing the real stories behind each student.
