Last October I was on a diving holiday in the Philippines with seven other advanced divers.
I dived off the boat slowly sinking to about 20m.
After nearly 45 minutes, the sound of my breathing was drowned out by a low rumble like an engine and I felt deep powerful vibrations (震动) as if a big boat was passing overhead. The
instructor and I both swam next to each other, staying close to the side of the reef (礁石), because the situation felt extremely sinister.
Then the vibration, became so intense that I could feel it in my bones and then the sound
turned into a deafening roar. Suddenly, a few meters below us, breaks began forming and the sand was sucked down. That’s when I got what it was. The noise was the sound of the earth splintering open and grinding against itself.
The instructor and I held hands and looked into each other’s eyes, and I felt comforted by his presence. My body went on high alert, ready to react. But I had no power over whatever this was. The only option was to stay very still and let it do whatever it’s going to do.
It took enormous willpower to resist the urge to swim to the surface, which was not sensible as the situation on the surface at that time was ambiguous with potential threats pending. Soon we saw other divers.
The sound and vibration lasted only two or three minutes. We all held hands to avoid
decompression sickness (潜水病), which can be fatal. When up, it was a huge relief to see all the divers safe.
Back on the boat, we rushed to check the news and discovered we had witnessed a huge
earthquake, measuring 7.2 on the Richter scale. It released more energy than 30 Hiroshima bombs,

though it seemed that we were not at the epicenter (震中). I was high and felt extremely lucky not because of my recent survival miracle, but to have experienced nature at its most stunning and its most frightening moment.
24 .The underlined word in the second paragraph is closest in meaning to ________.
A .urgent B .dangerous C .confusing D .harmonious
25 .Why didn’t the author rise to the surface before the vibration stopped
A .Because he was very afraid of big waves.
B .Because he had lost all the strengths to swim.
C .Because he tried to avoid unexpected danger above.
D .Because he could sense the unclear water situation.
26 .Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage
A .At the beginning of the event, a big boat passed by causing big vibration.
B .All the divers used the reef as the protection against the violent vibration.
C .Powerless to fight nature, all the divers tried to cooperate and help each other.
D .I felt relieved as the instructor was experienced in handling situations like this.
27 .Why did the author feel fortunate on the boat
A .Because he could witness a rare natural phenomenon.
B .Because he finally survived a huge earthquake.
C .Because he was not at the epicenter of the earthquake.
D .Because he didn’t suffer from decompression sickness.

Despite decades of indoor smoking bans and restrictions which serve to protect
non-smoking people from exposure to second-hand smoke, a new research from Drexel University suggests that third-hand smoke, the chemical residue (残留物) from cigarette smoke that attaches itself to anything and anyone nearby, can make its way into the air and spread through buildings
where no one is smoking.
Peter DeCarlo, an atmospheric chemist at Drexel, revealed the new exposure route for third-hand smoke—through aerosol particles (气溶胶颗粒) which are common particles
suspended in the air—they come from various sources and are harmful to health. “In an empty
classroom, where smoking has not been allowed, we found that 29 percent of the entire indoor
aerosol mass contained third-hand smoke chemical species. This shocked us and raised many
questions about how that much third-hand smoke could continue to exist in a non-smoking room,” he says.
To investigate the cause of this surprising finding, DeCarlo and his coworkers first made
cigarette smoke flow into a Pyrex container, allowing the smoke chemicals to stay inside. Then
they made any residual smoke flow out of the container before pulling outdoor air through it to
clear out any second-hand smoke. After a day, purified outdoor air was passed through the
container and the researchers measured the chemical composition of the aerosol particles it
acquired and compared it to outdoor air that hadn’t passed through the container. They found a 13 percent increase in third-hand smoke chemical species in the air that went through the Pyrex
container, which meant that, though it seemed as though the smoke had cleared, a chemical residue still existed and found a way to attach itself to passing aerosol particles.
This means that the discovery was by no means unique to that classroom; in fact, it’s likely quite a widespread phenomenon. “While most people expect that they’ ll be exposed to air
pollution from cars, or other chemicals in low concentrations when they’ re outside—they tend to think that they’ re escaping all that when they step indoors,” DeCarlo says. “Understanding that we are constantly exposed to these chemicals, even in our workplaces, is a challenge to
communicate to the public.”
28 .What does the research show
A .Third-hand smoke spreads widely. B .Smoking bans function well.
C .Smoke residue exists temporarily. D .Indoor smoking is strictly restricted.
29 .Why was the discovery in the classroom surprising
A .Smoking was permitted there. B .New aerosol particles appeared there.
C .Chemical species there raised a debate. D .Partial aerosol particles there carried smoke.
30 .How did the researchers carry out the study
A .By observing chemicals in the lab. B .By comparing indoor and outdoor air.
C .By modeling third-hand smoke exposure. D .By measuring air quality in containers.
31 .What does DeCarlo imply in the last paragraph
A .People face new working challenges.

B .Their discovery is against expectations.
C .Smoke exposure raises widespread concerns.
D .Staying indoors frees people from air pollution.

A theme at this year’s World Economic Forum (WEF) meeting in Switzerland was the
perceived need to “speed up breakthroughs in research and technology.” Some of this framing was motivated by the climate emergency, some by the opportunities and challenges presented by
generative artificial intelligence. Yet in various conversations, it seemed to be taken for granted
that to address the world’s problems, scientific research needs to move faster. The WEF mindset is similar to the Silicon Valley dictate — to move fast and break things. But what if the thing being broken is science Or public trust
In recent years we’ve seen important papers, written by outstanding scientists and published in celebrated journals, retracted because of questionable data or methods, hence a question: Are
scholars at supercompetitive places such as Harvard and Stanford rushing to publish rather than taking the time to do their work right
It’s impossible to answer this question scientifically because there’s no scientific definition of what constitutes “rushing.” But there’s little doubt that we live in a culture where academics at leading universities are under tremendous pressure to produce results — and a lot of them —
quickly.
The problem is not unique to the U. S. In Europe, formal research assessments — which are used to allocate (分配) future funding — have for years judged academic departments largely on the quantity of their output. A recent reform urging an emphasis on quality over quantity allowed that the existing system had created “counterincentives.”
Good science takes time. More than 50 years passed between the 1543 publication of
Copernicus’s On the Revolutions ofthe Heavenly Spheres. And it took just about half a century
for geologists and geophysicists to accept geophysicist Alfred Wegener’s idea of continental drift.
There’s plenty of evidence that scientists and other scholars are pushing results out far faster than they used to. Consider the sheer volume of academic papers being published these days. One recent study put the number at more than seven million a year, compared with fewer
than a million as recently as 1980. Some of this growth is driven by more scientists and more co-authorship of papers, but the numbers also suggest that the research world has prioritized
quantity over quality. Researchers may need to slow down if we are to produce knowledge worthy of trust.
32 .WEF meeting in Switzerland advocated that ________.
A .WEF and Silicon Valley reach an agreement to move fast
B .public trust in science is not supposed to be easily broken
C .researchers need to achieve breakthroughs more rapidly
D .climate emergency and AI push scientific research hard
33 .Which of the following examples fails to prove that good science takes time
A .High-profile scholars’ tremendous output. B .Publication of Copernicus’s theory.
C .Retraction of important papers. D .Acceptance of the idea of continental drift.
34 .The underlined word “counterincentives” in para. 5 probably means ________.
A .measures to increase quantities of output B .contradictory motives for future funding
C .rewards for leading universities’ research D .discouragements of high quality papers
35 .Which of the following is best title of the passage
A .WEF Coincides with Silicon Valley B .Trouble in the Fast Lane
C .Choice between Quantity and Quality D .Collapse of Public Trust

Have you ever walked away from a conversation with the sinking feeling that you said too much Not because you were impolite or inconsiderate — but because you tried to explain
yourself to someone who didn’t really want to understand ____36____
Over-explaining happens often in our daily life. This behavior originated in early survival strategies. For those raised in emotionally unpredictable households, clarity may be a form of
self-protection. Anticipating others’ reactions, smoothing things over, or presenting a
“bulletproof” reason may prevent punishment or emotional fallout. ____37____ People who have ever undergone trauma (创伤) tend to explain a lot to avoid conflict or rejection.
Regardless of origin, the pattern is the same: We spend unnecessary energy trying to justify our right to take up space, to say no or to make choices others might not like. ____38____ Clear
language like “I’ve made my decision.” and “Let’s shift the conversation.” can actually do the
trick. These direct statements prioritize emotional honesty without over-disclosure. And they don’t leave space for negotiation where none is guaranteed.
____39____ You spend less ofit in practicing, defending, or recovering, and you needn’t always react to others’ discomfort. You also start attracting a different kind of relationship. It is based not on performance or submission, but on mutual respect. ____40____ You begin healing the part of you that believed love had to be earned through explanation. The version of you who felt unsafe being misunderstood learns a new truth: Your worth was never conditional or
dependent on being agreeable or persuasive.
A .But maybe the biggest shift is internal.
B .Like any behavioral change, this takes practice.
C .If so, you are not alone.
D .Have you ever explained to show your politeness and consideration
E .But it’s not impossible to rid ourselves of the trouble.
F .Over-explaining can also come from the way your brain is wired by past experiences.
G .When you stop over-explaining, you reclaim emotional energy.

Many years ago, I took my eldest son to see my favorite band when my wife was out on business. Though he was hesitant at first, he was convinced by the promise of some snacks and ended up loving the concert, becoming an even bigger fan than me.
When the band announced a new tour years later, I immediately planned to take my family to the concert. My wife, not a fan of the band, declined to come along. My youngest son had
grown up listening to their music and also came to love them. I eagerly bought tickets for the three of us. Not the best of seats due to limited finances, but who cares We were going to have a great time seeing the best band in the world.
At the concert, however, we faced an unexpected problem. My eldest was already taller than me; my youngest, on the other hand, was not so tall at the time. This meant that when the concert started and the people in the row in front decided to stay standing, he could not see past them, only catching sight of the stage between their bodies. It was obvious that he was
disappointed. It was tearing my heart that he was not able to enjoy the show, and I, of course, could not either.
I did ask the group in front if they were going to stay standing, and the answer was a
definite yes. They weren't doing anything wrong, so as much as I was disappointed, I understood that they had paid their money too and wanted to enjoy themselves.
Then a steward (工作人员) noticed our situation and kindly suggested we check with guest services a level below. While making my kids stand just inside a doorway so they could still see the concert, I quickly rushed down to seek help. The lady at the guest services was very
understanding, but all she could offer was the restricted-view seats closer to the stage.
注意:1.续写词数应为 150 个左右;
I walked to my sons, explaining the option of the alternative seats.

Honeybees (蜜蜂) are well known for their hard-working nature. But did you know they’re also excellent dancers These useful little insects use a special dance as a way to communicate
with each other about the location of the food source. Scientists have been studying this type of dance since the 1940s. As a result, we now know quite a bit about this secret bee language. The direction of the bee’s dance refers to the position of the food source in relation to the nest. The
length of the dance tells other bees how far away the food source is. Honeybees will also adapt
their dances according to the quality of the food source. The better quality the food has, the more energetic the dance will be.
根据 How It Works 部分“Borrow a book and return it on time; get 1 reading stamp.(借一本书并按时归还,可获得 1 枚阅读印章)”可知,Emma 按时归还了4 本书,可获得4 枚常规印章。根据 Special Bonus Stamps 部分“Golden Stamp: Finish any book from the “20 Classic Reads” list; Inkwell Stamp: Write a short review (50-100 words) in the app; E-Reader
Stamp: Borrow and finish an e-book; Attention: Only one special stamp per book, even if it
根据 Stamp Sets & Rewards"部分“Wisdom Set (12 stamps): Choose a new book for the library + your name on the “Reader’s Wall”(智慧套装(12 枚印章):为图书馆挑选一本新书+你的名字登上“读者墙”)”可知,收集 12 枚智慧套装印章后,学生可以获得为图书馆挑选新书的权利。故选 D。

After nearly 45 minutes, the sound of my breathing was

drowned out by a low rumble like an engine and I felt deep powerful vibrations (震动) as if a big boat was passing overhead. The instructor and I both swam next to each other, staying close to the side of the reef
It took enormous willpower to resist the urge to swim to the surface, which was not sensible as the situation on the surface at that time was ambiguous with potential
根据第六段“The sound and vibration lasted only two or three minutes. We all held hands to avoid decompression sickness (潜水病), which can be fatal. When up, it was a huge relief to see all the divers safe.(声音和震动只持续了两三分钟。
I was high and felt extremely lucky not because of my recent survival miracle, but to have experienced nature at its most stunning and its most frightening
故选 A。

Despite decades of indoor smoking bans and restrictions
which serve to protect non-smoking people from exposure to second-hand smoke, a new research
from Drexel University suggests that third-hand smoke, the chemical residue (残留物)from
cigarette smoke that attaches itself to anything and anyone nearby, can make its way into the air
and spread through buildings where no one is smoking.
故选 A。
In an empty classroom, where smoking has not been allowed, we found that 29 percent of the entire indoor aerosol mass contained third-hand smoke chemical
species. This shocked us and raised many questions about how that much third-hand smoke could continue to exist in a non-smoking room,” he says.
To investigate the cause of this surprising finding, DeCarlo and his coworkers first made cigarette smoke flow into a Pyrex container, allowing the smoke
chemicals to stay inside. Then they made any residual smoke flow out of the container before
pulling outdoor air through it to clear out any second-hand smoke. After a day, purified outdoor
air was passed through the container and the researchers measured the chemical composition of
the aerosol particles it acquired and compared it to outdoor air that hadn’t passed through the
container.
根据最后一段内容“This means that the discovery was by no means unique to that classroom; in fact, it’s likely quite a widespread phenomenon. “While most people expect that they’ ll be exposed to air pollution from cars, or other chemicals in low concentrations when they’

says. “Understanding that we are constantly exposed to these chemicals, even in our workplaces,
is a challenge to communicate to the public.”

根据第一段“A theme at this year’s World Economic Forum (WEF) meeting in Switzerland was the perceived need to “speed up breakthroughs in research and technology.”(今
It’s impossible to answer this question scientifically because
there’s no scientific definition of what constitutes “rushing.” But there’s little doubt that we live in a culture where academics at leading universities are under tremendous pressure to produce results
— and a lot of them — quickly.(要从科学的角度来回答这个问题是不可能的,因为对于“匆忙”这一概念并没有一个科学的定义。 故选 A。
根据第四段“The problem is not unique to the U. S. In Europe, formal research assessments — which are used to allocate (分配) future funding — have for years judged
academic departments largely on the quantity of their output. A recent reform urging an emphasis on quality over quantity allowed that the existing system had created “counterincentives.”(这个问题并非美国所独有。

There’s plenty of circumstantial evidence that scientists and
other scholars are pushing results out far faster than they used to. Consider the sheer volume of
academic papers being published these days. One recent study put the number at more than seven million a year, compared with fewer than a million as recently as 1980. Some of this growth is
driven by more scientists and more co-authorship of papers, but the numbers also suggest that the research world has prioritized quantity over quality. Researchers may need to slow down if we are to produce knowledge worthy of trust.(有大量的间接证据表明,科学家和其他学者推出结果的速度比过去快得多。

38 .根据空前“Regardless of origin, the pattern is the same: We spend unnecessary energy trying to justify our right to take up space, to say no or to make choices others might not like.(无论起源如何,这种模式都是相同的:我们花费不必要的精力,试图证明自己有权利占据空间、说“不”或做出别人可能不喜欢的选择。)”
39.根据空后“You spend less ofit in practicing, defending, or recovering, and you needn’t always react to others' discomfort.
You also start attracting a different kind of relationship. It is based not on
performance or submission, but on mutual respect.(你还会开始吸引一种不同类型的关系。 及空后“You begin healing the part of you that believed love had to be earned through explanation.(你开始疗愈内心那个认为“爱需要通过解释来争取”的部分。)” 故选 A 项。

Network and Information Security
Today, I’d like to talk about network and information security. And I believe everyone agrees that it is a matter of growing importance in our digital age.
To ensure secure online activities, we ought to prioritize authoritative websites (such as
Xinhua) as credible information sources. Additionally, we must stick to civilized internet conduct by behaving properly in online interactions and avoiding inappropriate content. Most crucially, we should develop the habit of verifying facts — examining information carefully to tell true
information apart from false stories.
By following these principles, we can help build a safer, more rational digital environment. Thank you for your attention.

67 .范文
I walked to my sons, explaining the option of the alternative seats. I told them that the
alternative seats offered a restricted view, but they were significantly closer to the stage. My
youngest son seemed a little disappointed at first, and then he nodded. “It’s OK, Dad. At least I’ll be able to see something,” he said, trying to sound cheerful. My eldest gave an encouraging nod. Touched by their understanding, I hurried back to the guest services counter and gratefully
accepted the woman’s offer, feeling a mix of relief and guilt.
To our surprise, we were directed down towards the front row. It was then that we realized the kind lady hadn’t just given us different seats — she had upgraded our seats. The stage was
right in front of us, so close that we could see the musicians’ expressions. My youngest screamed with joy, his earlier disappointment completely disappearing. As the band launched into our
favorite songs, we sang along joyfully, lost in the magic of the moment. I couldn’t thank that lady enough. What had begun as a night of disappointment had transformed into an unforgettable
experience, all thanks to a stranger’s unexpected kindness.
