Whenever Ian Falconer walked past piles of old plastic fishing nets near his home in
Cornwall, one thought kept running through his mind: What a waste! Determined to find a better solution, he decided to turn these deserted net s into something valuable.
Having studied environmental and mining geology at university, Falconer, then 52, used his knowledge to design a simple system that could cut up, clean, melt(熔化), and reshape the
worn-out nets into thin threads(线)for 3D printing. The process was both clever and practical. First, the nets were washed to remove salt and seaweed. Then, they were cut into small pieces and
gently heated until they softened. From the melted plastic, Falconer pulled long strings, which cooled into smooth, flexible threads ready for reuse. From his garage, he built what he called a
“micro-factory”, where waste could be turned into useful materials. Only by trying, he believed, could change truly begin.
Since the launch of his company, OrCA, in 2017, Falconer has raised over 1 million from investors from more than 40 countries. The funding helped him develop special machines able to process over 20 kilograms of nylon(尼龙)net s every hour. What once cost fishers &500 a tonne to throw away can now sell for up to 35,000 after recycling.
In his small shipping-container workshop stand shelves filled with new
products—sunglasses and bike parts—all made from the recycled material. So valuable have these nets become that when Falconer sees them piled high by the harbour, he sees money instead of
rubbish.
Yet Falconer’s ambition stretches far beyond Cornwall. Knowing that millions of tonnes of nets pollute oceans in developing countries, he now plans to send his portable recycling system
worldwide. Each mini “factory”, which fits inside a shipping container, could be placed in any harbour—turning harmful waste into profit while protecting the sea.
24 .What led Falconer to start the recycling project
A .His desire to help the locals.
B .His hope to win wide recognition.
C .His annoyance at the waste of nets.
D .His curiosity about 3D printing technology.
25 .How does Falconer’s system work
A .By combining salt and seaweed.
B .By reshaping sea waste into plastic.
C .By transforming old net s into new threads.
D .By replacing nylon with greener materials.
26 .What is the significance of Falconer’s project
A .It boosts small factories.
B .It offers a win-win solution.
C .It promotes the nylon industry.
D .It improves local fishermen’s life.
27 .What message does the text mainly deliver
A .Many hands make light work.
B .Actions speak louder than words.
C .Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.
D .One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.

In an age when digital assistants complete our sentences before we fully form them, it is easy to believe that printed dictionaries have outlived their usefulness. Yet they remain essential, because no tool better reminds us that language is not simply corrected—it is crafted.
Before spell-check and AI, students and writers turned to dictionaries not only to check
meanings but also to explore usage examples and word histories. A student drafting an essay, for instance, might look up “charge” and discover it can mean “accuse” “rush forward” or “fill with energy”. Choosing among these possibilities required thought, and that process often shaped the writer’s ideas. An AI assistant, by contrast, may simply replace the word with the most common option, leaving little room for personal intention.
Dictionaries have also played a guiding role in English. Johnson’s and Webster’s
dictionaries, widely used by schools and publishers, helped establish spelling and meaning at
times when regional dialects differed sharply. Even today, when dictionary makers update entries to reflect new expressions such as “ghosting” or “finsta”, they rely on everyday speakers for
evidence. This back-and-forth—public use influencing dictionaries, dictionaries influencing public use—keeps language both flexible and shared.
But this balance is weakening. As online communication takes over daily life, formal
English ebbs. Casual abbreviations, emojis, and speech-like sentences now appear in emails and even workplace reports. For many young people, writing “Sounds good!!” reads more confident than a polished, formal sentence. The shift is understandable, yet it raises a question: If
algorithms(算法)increasingly finish our sentences, do we still learn how to shape them ourselves
AI writing tools offer clean, quick suggestions, but they rely on fixed patterns. As George Orwell once warned, such ready-made phrasing can “think our thoughts” for us. When writers
accept every suggestion, originality slowly disappears. Dictionaries, by contrast, push us to explore options and make deliberate choices.
Our ability to express ourselves shapes who we are. Losing the dictionary would mean losing not only a reference book, but a way of thinking—one that keeps language creative,
thoughtful, and deeply human.
28 .What does the example of “charge” show
A .Word histories are stressed a lot in dictionaries.
B .AI assistants are more efficient than printed dictionaries.
C .Printed dictionaries help users gain deeper insight into words.
D .Students struggle to choose the right meaning of certain words.
29 .What does the underlined word “ebbs” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A .Withdraws. B .Arises.
C .Improves. D .Stabilizes.
30 .What can be inferred from paragraph 5
A .No convenience comes without a cost.
B .AI tools contribute much to creative works.
C .Dictionaries provide more fixed word choices than AI tools.
D .George Orwell encouraged the use of existing writing patterns.
31 .Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A .The History of English Dictionaries
B .AI Assistants Threaten Language Creativity
C .The Necessity of Formal English in Digital Age
D .Printed Dictionaries Are Still Essential in Digital Times

Polluted air is bad for your lungs. That dirty air might also be the reason why many kids need glasses, new data show. This observation comes from a study published in PNAS Nexus
about nearly 30,000 school-age children. Kids had better eyesight when air pollution levels were lower, scientists found.
Myopia, a condition where distant objects appear unclear, affects over 80% of Chinese
teenagers by high school. While genetics and habits like screen time contribute, environmental factors such as air pollution are emerging as key drivers. The study focused on NO2 and PM2.5,
pollutants from traffic and industry. 29,971 students in Tianjin, China, served as subjects in the
study. Using machine learning to analyze health surveys and environmental data, researchers
found that children exposed to cleaner air were less likely to develop severe myopia. For instance, lower NO2 levels were associated with a 10%—20% reduction in high myopia risk.
The researchers propose two mechanisms for the link between lower air pollution levels
and better eyesight. First, pollutants disturb the eyes, causing inflammation and oxidative stress,
which damage cells critical for vision development. Second, PM2.5 enter the bloodstream,
affecting tissues system-wide, including the retina(视网膜). Previous studies in adults show
pollution narrows retinal blood vessels, a change linked to myopia in children. “The eye is directly exposed to the environment, making it extremely delicate,” explains Judith Klein-Seetharaman, a biochemist. Dust and particles(微粒)can cause swelling and long-term vision problems.
The study also modeled cleaner-air situations, predicting there would be fewer severe
myopia cases if pollution levels dropped. However, researchers caution that the link does not
prove causation. Factors like diet or outdoor activities might influence results, and the data relied on school-based pollution measurements, which may not reflect full exposure.
Despite limitations, the findings highlight air quality’s role in eye health. The team
recommends creating clean-air zones around schools, such as restricting traffic during peak hours and using classroom air bined with broader pollution policies, these steps could
protect children’s vision globally. As urban air quality worsens, addressing pollution becomes vital not just for lungs but also for preventing myopia in future generations.
32 .What is the main finding of the study
A .Polluted air has a negative effect on children’s eyesight.
B .Air pollution is the main cause of lung problems in kids.
C .Lung health problems are closely linked to poor eyesight.
D .Most school-age children wear glasses because of dirty air.
33 .How do the researchers carry out their work
A .By consulting experts in eye health.
B .By comparing the impacts of PM2.5 and NO2.
C .By collecting and analyzing data with technology.
D .By looking into myopia cases in different countries.

34 .What is a limitation of the study
A .It only focused on a certain factor.
B .The number of participants was far from enough.
C .It failed to show the link between pollution and health.
D .The subjects’ health conditions were not checked in advance.
35 .What is suggested in response to the new finding
A .Using more advanced machines to monitor eye health.
B .Reducing children’s screen time both in school and at home.
C .Encouraging children to do more outdoor activities every day.
D .Combining setting clean-air zones with effective supporting measures.

tiredness turned into contentment.

The orphanage(孤儿院)stood at the edge of town where the pavement ended and the dust started, with tall walls painted the color of old gray and windows that were rarely opened, and
inside it, the air was filled with the quiet calm of daily routine, including the sound of footsteps in the hallways, the rustle of pages being turned, and the faint echo of an unfinished piano lesson.
When I arrived that summer as a volunteer, I was told to “brighten things up”. No one
explained what that meant. On my first day, I wandered from room to room, wiping tables,
straightening books, and feeling strangely unnecessary. The children moved quietly past me,
polite but distant, their eyes lowered as if waiting for permission to breathe. I wondered whether anything I did would matter here.
Then I found the wall behind the dining hall—a long stretch of concrete, sun-faded and scarred with years of rain. It faced the morning light but gave nothing back. Something in its emptiness mirrored the quiet inside the orphanage.
One afternoon, while sweeping nearby, I noticed a boy standing close to it, tracing invisible shapes on the surface. His name was Kai, a silent child with brown-colored hair. He didn’t look at me; he only studied the blank wall as if he could see something I couldn’t. That moment stayed
with me through the night.
The next morning, unsure what else to do, I brought my paints. The first yellow stroke(笔画)looked shockingly bright against the gray. Then came another, and another. As I worked, I
sensed movement behind me. Kai approached, dipped his palm into green paint, and pressed it beneath the branch I had drawn. His quiet certainty told me I wasn’t working alone anymore.
The following days changed everything. Children who rarely spoke began adding their own marks—tiny hands shaping forests, rivers, suns, and soaring birds. Laughter returned in small
bursts, shy at first, then growing louder. Although the wall wasn’t entirely covered, it was full of color and alive.

29.答案 A
30.答案 A

66 .Dear John,
I’m thrilled to share with you my recent visit to the newly opened cultural park in our city with my family. It is a large park packed with traditional Chinese buildings, flourishing gardens and engaging displays that present our long-standing cultural traditions. We wandered along
streets in ancient Chinese style, marvelling at the delicate workmanship of the architectures and listening to fascinating tales from history.
The visit was truly enlightening. I gained deeper appreciation for our culture’s diversity and depth. It was a memorable experience that not only entertained us but also educated us.
Wish you could join us next time!
Yours,
Li Hua

67 .Unluckily, a terrible storm attacked the city. All night, the wind howled like a wounded beast, and rain washed away the colorful wall without mercy. I watched from the window, my heart
sinking with each flash of lightning that destroyed the running colors—the green forests bleeding into blue rivers and the yellow suns fading into gray. Had the storm come a little later, we might
have covered the wall, yet nature offered no mercy. I stood there helplessly, the brushes still in my hand, listening to the steady drip of water that sounded like the echo of our lost effort.
After the storm, I surprisedly found many children gathering before the wall. Kai stepped forward first, his small figure framed by the clearing sky, and looked at me as if asking whether the story was truly over. “Not if we choose to begin again,” I said. With that, I dipped my brush into fresh white paint and drew a small bridge—just a beginning. One by one, the children
followed. As the afternoon sun dried the new shapes, I realized that storms could erase paint, but not voices. What we rebuilt now belonged to all of us, and in this second beginning, their silence finally learned to speak.
