I’m Isaias Hernandez. For me, environmental education didn’t begin in a classroom. It began at home with my mother. As a first-generation economically disadvantaged
Mexican-American, knowledge was a tool for life and curiosity was my guide. Before public
school and textbooks, my mother was my first teacher. She reminded us that Spanish wasn’tjust a language. It was a gift. Learning to write and speak it meant connecting to our roots and
试卷第 4 页,共 13 页
understanding the beautiful blend of languages and cultures around the world.
My early relationship with environmentalism was formed through small moments. I didn’t grow up going on nature hikes or camping trips. I grew up falling in love with the Discovery
Channel and Nat Geo, studying animals and ecosystems I had never touched. I saw biologists,
conservationists, and environmental storytellers on screen. I admired them. I quietly dreamed of doing what they did. But a part of me believed I could never do that. I wasn’t smart enough. I
believed that kids like me growing up in poverty weren’t meant to be on screen, let alone in science.
Years later, I graduated from UC Berkeley with a degree in Environmental Science. But I didn’t stop there. I wanted to create something of my own. I built QueerBrownVegan, a digital
home connecting environmental education, storytelling, and cultural memory. What started as one page became a community — a space where people who looked like me, felt like me, and
dreamed like me could learn, grow, and express environmentalism in their own voice.
Eventually, that dream I had as a kid came back. But I knew I couldn’t wait for someone to discover me. So I made my own show. I launched a digital web series called Teaching Climate
Together — a DIY project with a vision bigger than the cost, driven by storytelling, passion, and a camera that never stopped recording.
4 .What did Isaias’s mother tell him to do
A .To stay curious always. B .To use knowledge as a tool for life.
C .To pass on cultural traditions. D .To understand the world through language.
5 .How did Isaias’s early link with environmentalism start
A .By joining nature hikes. B .By watching TV shows.
C .By admiring on-screen scientists. D .By dreaming of a science career.
6 .What can be inferred from QueerBrownVegan
A .It moved from online to offline. B .It mainly aimed at environmental education.
C .It was created before his graduation. D .It gained public attention.
7 .Which words can best describe Isaias
A .Determined and creative. B .Thoughtful and talkative.
C .Intelligent and patient. D .Outgoing and modest.

The value of the dictionary depends upon your purpose. If the idea is to teach word
meanings or to help students understand, then provide the meanings directly. The whole process of looking up words and choosing among meanings increases “cognitive load (认知负荷)”. That is, the dictionary tasks pull attention from learning the word meanings. It wastes precious class time, too. Therefore, many textbooks include meanings of key vocabulary.
Technology also allows students to click on a word to find its meanings. In this way,
publishers provide access to meanings without requiring students to struggle with dictionaries.
That said, there is more to it than that. Students should be learning to turn to the dictionary during reading when they encounter difficulties, and it is rewarding to help them overcome this cognitive load challenge.
All students can gain from dictionaries, but the benefits of dictionary use are most obvious for English learners because of their limited knowledge of English vocabulary. However,
dictionary instruction can be pretty bad, with a lot of focus on looking up words and little energy devoted to making sense of meanings or choosing the relevant ones. Technology has relieved the “looking up” pressure but the rest of it is still an issue.
Kids simply don’t know how to make sense of what they find in dictionaries — the benefits of gaining information from each of the various definitions, and the need to look up additional
words to make sense of a meaning. For instance, if you look up “joy”, you will quickly encounter the word “emotion”, which is a harder word than the one you were trying to figure out.
Dictionary instruction can provide a great opportunity to explore the grammatical relations among words, too. Such dictionary lessons will not directly increase vocabulary, but they will
provide students with the proficiency (熟练) that they need to solve unknown words during reading, which is valuable.
8 .Why do textbooks add key word explanations
A .To prevent student distraction. B .To speed up the learning process.
C .To build a vocabulary system. D .To remove unnecessary tasks.
9 .What does paragraph 2 mainly say about technology
A .It simplifies word lookup. B .It makes dictionary skills unnecessary.
C .It shouldn’t replace dictionary use. D .It reduces learning challenges.

10 .What is the problem with dictionary instruction
A .It stops at turning pages. B .It consumes much time.
C .It focuses on new words. D .It assumes prior word knowledge.

A .Dictionaries: A Tool for Every Student B .Moving Beyond Just Looking Up Words

I often catch myself asking my questions to AI chatbots with a “please” and a “thank you.” Apparently, I am not alone. A 2024 survey found that approximately 67% of U.S. AI users are
also polite and show gratitude toward AI search engines. Some even joked about the cost: if every polite word consumes electricity, the bill must be high. OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman replied:
“Tens of millions of dollars well spent — you never know.”
In reality, of course, AI chatbots do not appreciate politeness; they lack consciousness,
feelings or social needs. From a purely utilitarian (功利主义的) standpoint, all those pleases and thank yous are just flushing money down the toilet.
Still, there may be value that isn’t immediately measurable in showing gratitude toward AI. Psychologists Robert Emmons and Michael McCullough carried out an experiment in which they divided participants into three groups, asking the first to list things they are grateful for, while
others listed daily troubles or simply kept journals. After 10 weeks, they found that the first group reported 25% higher happiness levels, stronger inner strength and even better physical health.
What’s true of gratitude is also true of kindness and generosity more generally.
Experiments at UC Riverside found that performing “five small acts of kindness per week”
produced steady increases in happiness. This idea isn’t new. The medieval thinker Maimonides
wrote that “it is better for a person to give one coin to a thousand poor people than to give a
thousand coins to one poor person.” He believed that regular acts of goodness, like giving charity and expressing gratitude, make us happier in the long run by turning virtue into a habit.
So perhaps all of our pleases and thank yous to AI have value, even if they cost OpenAI
millions of dollars annually. Showing appreciation, even toward a machine, reinforces positive
habits of courtesy (礼貌), patience and empathy. In our increasingly digital and automated world,
试卷第 7 页,共 13 页
preserving these human qualities may be more valuable than the cost of a little extra electricity.
Ultimately, the beneficiary of our politeness isn’t the AI at all, but ourselves.
12 .How does the author introduce the topic in paragraph 1
A .By quoting an expert. B .By telling a story.
C .By presenting a phenomenon. D .By defining a concept.
13 .What value of gratitude does the experiment in paragraph 3 show
A .It strengthens our bodies and minds. B .It reduces daily stress levels.
C .It improves memory and creativity. D .It deepens social relationships.
14 .Which of the following would Maimonides most likely approve of
A .Giving gifts to friends on birthdays. B .Making a large donation to a charity.
C.Expressing gratitude on Thanksgiving Day. D.Volunteering weekly at a community kitchen.
15 .What message does the author mainly convey in the text
A .Courtesy to AI saves electricity bills. B .AI improves the quality of human life.
C .Politeness benefits humans rather than AI. D .AI learns empathy from human behavior.

People hate packaging. And, yes, there’s a lot of bad and wasteful packaging out there.___ 16___ When it comes to protecting and dispensing (分发) food, the right package can greatly reduce
waste. Here are a few examples.
Packaging keeps the meat fresh.
We throw away a fifth of the beef we buy — the equivalent (等量) of 8 million cows each year — often because it goes bad before we cook it. The solution ___ 17___ Case-ready
packaging can lengthen that shelf life to up to 21 days. If the meat you bought isn’t going to be eaten within a few days, case-ready packaging is the better choice for the environment.
___ 18___
This dairy waste can be avoided with packaging technology such as Tetra Pak (利乐包装纸盒), which is commonly used in Europe and Asia to keep milk from spoiling, even without
refrigeration. Recycled or not, Tetra Pak is a good environmental bet because it can lengthen the

forget something. Her strict science teacher, Mr. Jeff, often got angry with her for being unprepared.
“Late again, Jane!” Mr. Jeff shouted loudly one Monday morning as Jane rushed into class, her shoes untied and books falling from her arms. “Where’s your homework Still unfinished ”
Jane’s face turned red. “I... I did finish it this time,” she said quietly, searching her bag. Her heart dropped when she pulled out a messy math paper instead. The class laughed.
That night, Jane sat in her room, remembering how embarrassed (尴尬的) she felt “I’ll
prove I can do better,” she promised herself. She stayed up late organizing her school things: notes and a homework report, Jane’s mom, coming home late from her nursing job, noticed the extra
effort Jane was putting into her schoolwork. She asked Jane to go to bed early. But Jane said. “I

everything was ready. Jane set two alarms (闹铃).
Unluckily, the next morning the alarms didn’t ring, because Jane had set them wrongly. Her mom knocked on her door and said, “Jane! The school bus is coming soon!” In a hurry to eat

CEO Sam Altman replied: “Tens of millions of dollars well spent — you never know.”(我常常会发现自己在向人工智能聊天机器人提问时会加上“请”和“谢谢”这样的词语。
Still, there may be value that isn’t immediately measurable in
showing gratitude toward AI. Psychologists Robert Emmons and Michael McCullough carried out an experiment in which they divided participants into three groups, asking the first to list things
they are grateful for, while others listed daily troubles or simply kept journals. After 10 weeks,
they found that the first group reported 25% higher happiness levels, stronger inner strength and
even better physical health.( 不过,对人工智能表示感激所体现的价值可能并非是能够立即衡

14.细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“He believed that regular acts of goodness, like giving charity and expressing gratitude, make us happier in the long run by turning virtue into a habit.(他认为,
定期的善举,比如进行慈善捐赠和表达感激之情,会通过将美德转化为习惯而使我们长期感到更幸福)”可知,迈蒙尼德认同每周到社区厨房做志愿服务的做法。故选 D。
15 .推理判断题。根据最后一段“Showing appreciation, even toward a machine, reinforces
positive habits of courtesy (礼貌), patience and empathy. In our increasingly digital and
automated world, preserving these human qualities may be more valuable than the cost of a few
extra electricity. Ultimately, the beneficiary of our politeness isn’t the AI at all, but ourselves.(向 机器表达感激之情,哪怕只是向一台机器表示感谢,也能强化我们养成的礼貌、耐心和同理心等良好习惯。在我们这个日益数字化和自动化的世界里, 保持这些人性特质可能比多消耗一些电能更有价值。最终, 我们礼貌行为的受益者并非那台人工智能,而是我们自己)”可知,作者在这篇文章中主要传达了礼貌对人类有益,而非对人工智能有益。故选 C。

【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了正确的包装可以有效减少浪费。
16 .空格前的句子“People hate packaging. And, yes, there’s a lot of bad and wasteful packaging out there.(人们讨厌包装。是的,有很多糟糕和浪费的包装。)”说因为浪费,人们讨厌包装。而空格后的句子“When it comes to protecting and dispensing (分发) food, the right package can greatly reduce waste.(在保护和分配食物时,正确的包装可以大大减少浪费。)”又说正确的包装可以大大减少浪费。由此可推知, 观点发生了转变,故空处应该填转折句进行过渡。C 项 “But packaging isn’t always the enemy.(但包装并不总是环境的敌人)”填入空格处,符合文章行文逻辑。故选 C 项。
17 .根据空格前的句子“We throw away a fifth of the beef we buy—the equivalent (等量) of 8 million cows each year—often because it goes bad before we cook it. The solution (我们扔掉了我们购买的五分之一的牛肉——相当于每年 800 万头牛——通常是因为它们在我们烹饪之前就变质了。解决方案 )”可知,空格处的句子应该提到防止牛肉变质的解决方案。所以 E项“Scientists have developed packaging that can keep refrigerated meat fresh for weeks.(科学家
答案第 4 页,共 11 页
们已经开发出一种可以使冷藏肉类保持数周新鲜的包装。)”填入空格处,符合语境。故选 E项。
18 .空格处是该部分的主题句。根据下文的内容“This dairy waste can be avoided with
packaging technology such as Tetra Pak (利乐包装纸盒), which is commonly used in Europe and Asia to keep milk from spoiling, even without refrigeration. Recycled or not, Tetra Pak is a good environmental bet because it can lengthen the shelf life of milk up to nine months.(使用利乐包等包装技术可以避免这种乳制品浪费。利乐包在欧洲和亚洲通常用于防止牛奶变质, 即使没有冷藏。无论回收与否, 利乐包都是一个很好的环保选择,因为它可以将牛奶的保质期延长到9 个月。)”可知,该部分主要是说利乐包对牛奶的保护作用。所以,A 项“Packaging protects milk.(包装保护牛奶。)”填入空格处,可以作为该部分的主题句,符合语境。故填 A 项。
19 .根据空格后的句子“Once again, the environmental benefit of the food-protection technology outweighs the harmful impact of the packaging itself.(再一次,食品保护技术的环境效益超过了包装本身的有害影响。)”可知,空格处的句子应该表明食品保护技术的环境效益超过了包装本身有害影响的事实。所以,F 项“It can reduce the need for refrigeration and the amount of milk that goes wasted.(它可以减少对冷藏的需求和浪费的牛奶量。)”填入空格处,符合语境。因为冷藏需要能量,而浪费牛奶也是对环境有害。故选 F 项。
20 .空格后的句子“One example of waste-reducing packaging is the concept project shown from designer Drew Stanley. He designed a peanut butter jar made of a soft material which can be
turned inside out and scraped clean, avoiding sticky food sticking to your fingers.(设计师德鲁·斯 坦利展示的概念项目就是减少废物包装的一个例子。他设计了一种用柔软材料制成的花生酱罐,可以翻转过来刮干净,避免粘稠的食物粘在手指上。)”提到了设计师 Drew Stanley 设计了一种新的方式来解决罐装食物的浪费,由此可推知,空格处应与罐装食品造成浪费有关。 G 项“Food left behind in jars and bottles makes up a surprising amount of waste.(留在罐子和瓶
子里的食物造成了惊人的浪费)”填入空格处,符合语境。故选 G 项。
