2025八省联考
I was in Philadelphia for a conference when I saw an ad in the hotel. A nearby theater was showing a documentary about several local animal shelters that were helping to save abandoned dogs across the country. I love animals, and I felt an urge to go to this fundraising event. However, none of my co-workers would go with me, and I was worried about walking on the street alone at night.
I resigned myself to spending the evening in my hotel room, but as soon as I got back to my room I felt restless and bored. The theater where the event was taking place was only about five blocks from the hotel, and the area around the hotel didn’t seem particularly dangerous. So, I decided to brave it. I gathered up my wallet and room key and set off.
It was already getting dark and the streets were nearly deserted. I managed to find the street the theater was on, but when I turned the corner, I stopped in shock. In front of the theater were a group of bikers — very big, tough-looking bikers.
I’ve known lots of motorcycle enthusiasts and most are nice people. However, in this case, I was a woman all alone, in a strange neighborhood, at night, and there were twenty or so very large men — all wearing insignia that indicated they were in some sort of club — standing before me. Warning bells began to sound in my head, and my heart was pounding. Was I at the right theater Had I misread the date of the event
A sign outside the theater told me that I was in the right place on the right evening. Nevertheless, I wondered if I should rush back to my hotel instead of walking through that crowd of bikers. I finally decided that I would be safer inside the theater. Hopefully, the bikers would have gone away by the time the film was over.

It was a bright and sunny day, but inside the classroom, Tom was feeling anything but cheerful. He had just received his test results, and they were far from what he had hoped for. His heart sank as he stared at the disappointing marks.
Tom had always been a diligent student, and this failure came as a huge blow. He couldn’t understand how he had performed so poorly when he had put in so much effort. He felt defeated and wondered if he was just not good enough.
As he walked home, he couldn’t help but think about what had gone wrong. He replayed the moments leading up to the test, trying to figure out where he had made mistakes. Maybe he hadn’t studied the right way Or perhaps he had been too nervous during the exam
When he got home, Tom decided to talk to his elder brother, Jack. Jack was always wise and had a way of making things seem better. Tom poured out his heart, telling Jack about his failure and how discouraged he felt.
Jack listened patiently and then said, “Tom, failure is not the end. It’s an opportunity to learn and grow. Every great success story is filled with failures along the way. Figure out what you need to do differently next time. Analyze your mistakes and use them as stepping stones to improve.”
Tom took his brother’s words to heart. He spent the next few days going over his test, identifying his weak areas and making a plan to address them. He started studying with a new approach, asking for help when he needed it and practicing more.
A few weeks later, another test was announced. Tom was nervous but also determined. As he sat down to take the test, he took a deep breath and reminded himself of what he had learned from his previous failure. Just as Tom was finishing the test, the teacher announced that time was up.

I met Gunter on a cold, wet and unforgettable evening in September. I had planned to fly to Vienna and take a bus to Prague for a conference. Due to a big storm, my flight had been delayed by an hour and a half. I touched down in Vienna just 30 minutes before the departure of the last bus to Prague. The moment I got off the plane, I ran like crazy through the airport building and jumped into the first taxi on the rank without a second thought.
That was when I met Gunter. I told him where I was going, but he said he hadn’t heard of the bus station. I thought my pronunciation was the problem, so I explained again more slowly, but he still looked confused. When I was about to give up, Gunter fished out his little phone and rang up a friend. After a heated discussion that lasted for what seemed like a century, Gunter put his phone down and started the car.
Finally, with just two minutes to spare we rolled into the bus station. Thankfully, there was a long queue still waiting to board the bus. Gunter parked the taxi behind the bus, turned around, and looked at me with a big smile on his face. “We made it,” he said.
Just then I realised that I had zero cash in my wallet. I flashed him an apologetic smile as I pulled out my Portuguese bankcard. He tried it several times, but the card machine just did not play along. A feeling of helplessness washed over me as I saw the bus queue thinning out.
At this moment, Gunter pointed towards the waiting hall of the bus station. There, at the entrance, was a cash machine. I jumped out of the car, made a mad run for the machine, and popped my card in, only to read the message: “Out of order. Sorry.”

Nita's Beautiful Bag
“What is that black smoke ” Nita asked her mother as they were folding the clothes.
“Your father is burning some things. Go see what he is up to,” she replied.
Nita approached her father, who was tending to a small fire in the yard. As she drew closer, she noticed a bunch of plastic bags burning. Confusion mixed with worry filled her young mind. She couldn’t help but question her father’s action.
“Why are you burning those plastic bags, Dad ” she asked, her voice full of concern.
“These bags would last an incredibly long time if we buried them. Plastic doesn’t break down in the earth. Burning is the only way to remove them, Nita,” he replied.
Nita’s forehead wrinkled. She felt a wave of sadness for the earth and couldn’t help but voice her discontent. “But burning isn’t good for the earth either, Dad. And the smoke ... it smells terrible,” she complained softly.
Her father let out a heavy sigh, understanding her concern. He knelt down to her level and spoke with a touch of regret in his voice, “I know, Nita, but I haven’t found another way to keep these bags from polluting the earth.”
That afternoon, as Nita’s mother returned from the market with more plastic bags, Nita felt a growing sense of unease. The cycle of using and burning plastic bags seemed endless, and she longed for a solution.
Later that day, Nita found herself watching her father work on cutting shirts for his clothing business. Her mind wandered, thinking about the problem at hand. Suddenly, an idea occurred to her. “Maybe I can create something useful with the leftover fabric scraps!” she thought excitedly.
Determined to make a difference, Nita borrowed her father’s scissors, thread, and a needle. Her father, concerned for her safety, tried to stop her. However, her determination shone through, and he soon found himself assisting her in making a beautiful bag.

I hurried into the theater, only to find there were even more bikers inside. Puzzled and frightened, I bought a ticket and walked in, following these big and tough-looking bikers. With the lights dimming in the theater, I felt my way to my seat cautiously, trying not to draw any attention from the bikers, some of whom had taken their seat and were chatting quietly. Sitting there, my heart was pounding like crazy while I waited for the film to start, regretting coming here alone00.
When the film began, I realized that the bikers were an animal rescue group. A wave of relief washed over me when I saw their appearance in the film and their efforts to rescue abandoned dogs in the documentary. As I watched, my initial fear turned into admiration and respect. Large and tough as they looked , they had a soft and kind heart, devoting their time and energy to helping animals in need. When the film came to an end, I couldn’t help applauding for their hard work and I was glad I’d braved my fear to come.

Tom handed in his test paper with a mixture of nervousness and hope. He knew he had done his best, but still couldn’t be sure of the outcome. All he could do was wait. As he walked out of the classroom, he felt a touch of relief that he had completed the test without repeating last time’s mistakes. When he got home, Jack was eager to know how he had performed in this test. Tom talked to Jack and expressed his nervousness. Jack patted him on the shoulder, saying, “Take it easy. Your hard work is bound to pay off this time.”
Days later, when the results were announced, Tom couldn’t believe his eyes. On the paper was a big red A . Though it was cloudy outside, in the classroom, Tom was feeling nothing but cheerful. His hard work had paid off. He couldn’t wait to share the good news with Jack, whose help made a big difference to him. He was overjoyed, realizing that failure indeed is not the end . It could be a stepping stone to success if one learned from it.

I ran back to Gunter and told him the bad news. The cash machine was also out of order! In other words, I couldn’t pay him now. I felt so depressed and sorry, an embarrassed smile creeping into my face. Then an idea occurred to me that I asked his phone number to contact him when I came back here. Surprisingly, he comforted me that everything was OK since he had known how anxious I was. After we said goodbye to each other, I rushed to the queue. Fortunately, I didn’t miss the whole arrangements for the conference.
Four days later, when I was back in Vienna, I called Gunter as promised. He didn’t recognise me immediately when I said hello to him, so I explained my intention. At first, he refused to charge me the fare, but I insisted I owe him the money. Therefore, we made a deal to meet at the bus station. When we met, I extended my gratitude for his trust in me, gave him the fare and tipped him another sum of money. Satisfied, he gave me a thumbs-up, praised me a lot for my honesty and also thanked me for the tip, but I told him that he deserved it. Till now, every time I recall this experience, I can’t help wondering if there is more trust and honesty in the world, how charming our world will be.

Days later, Nita accompanied her mother to the market with the newly made cloth bag. As the seller began to reach for a plastic bag, Nita’s voice rang out, commanding attention. “Hold on!” she exclaimed, her eyes shining with enthusiasm. “We don’t need a plastic bag. We have our own cloth bag to carry our groceries.” The seller paused, a curious look on his face, before breaking into a smile. “What a brilliant idea! Bags like this could truly change the world,” he remarked. Nita beamed with pride. Not only did she love her new cloth bag, but she also valued the fact that their family was contributing to a cleaner environment .
Word of Nita's bags spread rapidly throughout the village. People marveled at the beauty and practicality of her creations, and soon, requests for these unique bags poured in. Nita’s father devoted himself to making bags for everyone who sought them. With the introduction of Nita’s bags, the village underwent a transformation. The air became free from the choking smoke, and the streets were no longer littered with trash. Nita, with a twinkle in her eye, knew that even a small act of creativity and determination could make a significant impact on the world around her.
