Miss Martha had a little bakery (面包店) on the street corner and two thousand dollars in the bank. This bakery attracted many customers daily. Among them, one interested Martha a lot. He was a quiet, middle-aged man wearing glasses. ① His clothes were always patched (缝补的). But he looked tidy and had very good manners. He came in two or three times a week. He always bought two loaves of stale (不新鲜的) bread. Fresh bread was five cents a loaf, while stale loaves were two for five.
②
Once, while serving him, she saw a red and brown mark on his fingers. ③ She was sure he was an artist and very poor. No doubt he lived in an attic (阁楼), where he painted pictures, ate stale bread and thought of the good things to eat. To check if she was right, she took out a painting and put it behind the counter. No artist could fail to notice it. ④
Two days later, the customer came in. “Two loaves of stale bread, please.” “OK.”
“You have a fine picture here, madam.”
“Yes ” said Miss Martha, pleased with her cleverness. “Do you think it is good ”
“The palace,” he said, “is not in good drawing. The perspective (透视画法) of it is not true.”
Yes, he must be an artist. How gently his eyes shone behind his glasses! To be able to judge perspective at a quick look―and to live on stale bread! But talented people often have to go through difficulties before they succeed.
What a thing it would be for art and perspective if a genius (天才) were supported by two thousand dollars in the bank, a bakery and a sympathetic heart―But these were daydreams.
He kept on buying stale bread, never a cake, never a pie. She thought he began to look thinner and lose heart. She wanted to offer something good to him, but she was afraid of hurting him. She knew the pride of artists.

①Life is full of unexpected moments that can surprise us. When facing unexpected situations, we often find ourselves at a crossroads: to react or to respond. While these two words may seem similar, they are actually different ways to deal with challenges. Understanding the difference can help us make better choices in difficult situations.
②Reacting is our natural response. It’s immediate and emotional. When we react, we want to follow a simple pattern: something happens, we feel anxious, and then we continue without much thought. So some regrettable decisions are always made because it doesn’t allow time for proper consideration.
③Responding, on the other hand, is a more thoughtful process. Before we take actions to do with the event, it helps to create more space. This space allows us to observe our emotions, understand the situation clearly, and make thoughtful choices. The responding process can be broken down into four steps: pause, process, plan, and proceed.
④Research from UCLA has shown that simply naming our emotions—a technique called Affect Labeling (or Emotion Labeling) that is the practice of identifying and naming our emotional state, such as saying “I feel anxious” or “I’m disappointed right now”. It can greatly reduce stress levels. By doing this, we create mental distance from our emotions, making it easier to respond wisely.
⑤ ▲ You might make mistakes in your work, or you just forgot your homework at home or had an argument with a friend. Instead of reacting right away—like yelling (吼叫), crying, or doing something you’ll regret, try these following four steps: First, stop and take three deep breaths. Second, say to yourself how you’re feeling. Third, think about what choices you have. Fourth, choose the best action and do it.
⑥Just as life’s unexpected moments test us at every crossroads, the choice between reacting and responding greatly shapes our journey. By practicing the art of thoughtful response again and again, we change those surprising challenges into chances for growth. Two ways of thinking seem similar at first, but one gives you a lasting superpower: when things get unknown, you stay calm and choose wisely.
52.What is the key difference between “reacting” and “responding”
A.Reacting is planned, while responding is natural.
B.Reacting needs help from others, while responding doesn’t.
C.Reacting is for big problems, while responding is for small problems.
D.Reacting is quick and emotional, while responding is calm and thoughtful.
53.Why does the author mention “Affect Labeling” in Paragraph 4
A.To argue emotions should be ignored. B.To suggest only experts should use it.
C.To show how naming emotions reduces stress. D.To announce it as an ineffective emotional tool.
54.Which sentence can be put in the “ ▲ ”
A.These steps are too difficult for most people to follow.
B.This way of responding works for all kinds of problems.
C.When facing major life challenges, these steps won’t help.
D.Experts suggest reacting immediately to solve problems.
55.What is the best title and structure of the passage
A.Responding wisely B.Reacting quickly
C.Responding wisely D.Reacting quickly
D
①On a Sunday morning, your best friend calls you to ask for help. You gladly show up and help him. Then he hands you some money, saying “Thanks for your help.” The situation suddenly feels embarrassing.
②Why doesn’t direct pay fit the situation According to Dan Ariely, we live in two worlds―one ruled by social norms (规范), and the other by market norms. Social norms include the friendly requests that people make to one another and immediate payback (回报) is not needed. While in the second world, people work for money and get what they pay for. Market relationships are not necessarily bad, but they do suggest some benefits and immediate payments.
③When we keep social norms or market norms on their own way, things move smoothly. However, when they run into each other, the results are not satisfying.
④This is proved by an experiment made by Ariely in an American school. Some students always arrived late for school, so fines (罚款) were introduced. However, this made more students late. Before the fine, students felt sorry for interrupting (打扰) the class and this feeling made them feel forced to arrive on time in the future. But the fine took the place of this social norm. Students felt they were allowed to be late as long as they paid. Even after the fine was removed (撤销), the students didn’t return to social norms and the number of late students didn’t drop. The result showed a fact: when a social norm runs into a market norm, the social norm goes away and seldom returns.
⑤Then, do market norms always have a bigger influence than social norms Ariely did another experiment by paying people $5 (Group 1) or $0.50 (Group 2) for running circles for five minutes. And to Group 3, he introduced the task as a social request, just asking them for help. The results showed that Group 1 ran about 159 circles, and Group 2 about 101 circles. But Group 3 who were paid nothing ran 168 circles. When people are paid, motivation (动力) rises as pay rises, but people work even harder under social norms than for money. Why Because people love to feel that they help others.
⑥Money is the most expensive way to inspire people, but it will take you only so far―social norms are the forces that can make a difference in the long run.
56.What did the school fine experiment show
A.Fines successfully reduced students’ lateness.
B.Fines made students feel they could pay to be late.
C.Students arrived on time because of feeling shame.
D.Fines and social norms worked best when used together.
57.What can we learn about Dan Ariely’s experiment in Paragraph 5
A.Ariely expected people to help each other.
B.The group circling the most got the highest payment.
C.People acted under the same norms.
D.It showed the different influences of the two norms.
58.According to the passage, which one would the writer most probably agree with
A.Social norms can play a great role in society.
B.Market norms aren’t as effective as they used to be.
C.Better performance sometimes leads to lower payment.
D.People should replace market norms with social norms.
59.The structure of the passage may be ________.
A.B.
C.D.

We humans have been changing the world around us for a very long time. A 2024 study even found that humans in Africa may have used fire to prevent forest regrowth as early as 85,000 years ago. We change the animals around us too. Most famously turning wild wolves into dogs, maybe as early as 40,000 years ago.
And our effect on animals hasn’t stopped, right up to the present day. Because as we change the world, animals have to change if they want to survive.
For one example, consider how the roads we drive on could be changing the birds that fly over them. A study of swallows in Nebraska found that, from 1983 to 2022, the birds’ wings got shorter—probably because having smaller wings made them better at avoiding cars. The number of swallows killed by cars actually went down over the study period, even as the total swallow population increased—and most of the swallows that were killed have longer wings.
A human activity may also have led elephants to be born without tusks (the teeth of the elephants). Both male and female African elephants usually have tusks. But naturally fewer tuskless females were to be killed. So half of the female elephants were born without tusks, unlike those before.
Living close to humans may even make some animals smarter. City raccoons are better than country ones at opening bottles to get food. City raccoons have also learned to keep smaller fields so they don’t have to cross major roads, where they’re in greater danger!

I’m Claudia. My father is Sonic and he’s a fireman. To be honest being a child of a fireman can be difficult. Sometimes my father’s job makes me feel unhappy and lonely because he’s always busy. He never appeared on my school activities even the parents meeting. But last Thursday morning my father came to my school he gave me a talk about his job in my class. We learned much about fire and a danger fireman faced. My father said people should know more about the fire safety so that they could protect themselves and their families. What’s more people should remember to turn off electric items like TV sets and air conditioners when they are not used. He also told us his story of saving people from the fifteenth floor in a burning building. I’m proud of him because he has saved people’s lives. I understand why my father is busy. However I still hope that he can attend either our school open day or school parents meeting, so that I can introduce him to my classmates.

【原文】
I am a student from Class 6 Grade 9. Our class had set up a class cleaning day. We are willing to play a part in cleaning our classroom. Every Thursday afternoon is our class cleaning time. During the time everyone tries their best to do the cleaning work. Some students take responsibility for sweeping the floor and taking out the rubbish. While others need to clean the reading corner of the classroom. We put different books in order so their students can quickly find the books they need. After more than two hours of cleaning the classroom takes on a new look. Such a day helps us not only learn about the importance of a clean environment but also improve our sense of duty and class unity. In a word that day means a lot to us all.
