The Scientific Method
The scientific method is a way to ask and answer questions. Scientists research and make observations (观察). They also do experiments (实验). Here are the steps for the scientific method.
First, think about what things make you curious to learn more. Make an observation. For example, you may have noticed that mold (霉) grows on most kinds of the foods. Then, you may ask yourself a question, “What conditions make the mold grow best ” It helps you focus on what you want to know. Next, you need to make a hypothesis (猜想). It comes from what you already know. So here, you may guess that mold grows best in cold and dark conditions. After that, it’s time to run an experiment to test your hypothesis! You could put the food in different conditions to see what will happen. Finally, the results come out and you’ll draw a conclusion (结论) —Are the results the same as your hypothesis or different from it
Lab ReportName: Kevin Somers Date: May 24, 2025 Project Title: Testing How Mold Grows Question: I wonder what conditions make mold grow best. Hypothesis: Mold grows best in cold and dark conditions. Experiment: ·materials: √4 pieces of white bread √water √1 paper bag √fridge·experiment time: 1 ·method: 1.I put two pieces of bread on the dinner table. Some water was added to one piece of bread every day while the other remained dry. 2.I prepared two pieces of bread. I put one piece in a closed paper bag and left the bag on the top of the fridge because it’s warm there. I put the other piece in the fridge because it’s dark and cold there. 3.I examined these four pieces of bread every day for two weeks. I recorded every change on the bread. Result: 1.The wet bread developed mold more quickly than the dry bread. 2.The bread on the top of the fridge developed mold more quickly than the bread in the fridge. Conclusion: 1.Mold will finally develop on all of the bread. 2. 2

A wooden bridge has amazed over 42 million viewers online. It is built by Wang Dewen, famous as “Grandpa Amu.” He is regarded as a modern Lu Ban. While many admire his creative hands, what truly stands out is the traditional Chinese mortise and tenon skill he follows, making this bridge so special.
The mortise and tenon skill is a smart and traditional wood-joining method with a history of over 7,000 years in China. It connects two wooden pieces by shaping one end into a tenon and cutting a matching hole called a mortise into the other piece. When the tenon is placed into the mortise, the pieces fit closely together.
This amazing skill doesn’t require any metal part or glue but shows a strong and flexible (灵活的) connection. In fact, besides bridges, the skill is used in wooden buildings and furniture (家具) to help them stay fixed and balanced, even when temperature changes or earthquakes happen. The Palace Museum that uses millions of mortises and tenon connections is a famous example.
Not only does this skill make strong buildings, but also shows the wisdom of traditional Chinese workers. Smart designs can be seen in every piece of work. All the wooden pieces must be cut with great patience and carefulness so that they can be locked into places perfectly, which also shows the deep thinking of traditional Chinese builders. They believe that humans should get along well with nature. So when building things, they choose to use wood, a natural material. This way, they can create what they need while still respecting nature. No wonder this skill is still used today.
Although modern buildings often use concrete (混凝土) and steel, the mortise and tenon skill is still found in high-quality wooden furniture and the repair of historic buildings, reminding us how strong and lasting something can be when it is built with wisdom, patience and care.
48.What can we know about the wooden bridge
A.It is popular on the Internet. B.It uses a modern building skill.
C.Metal parts are used to join its parts. D.It is a bridge in the Palace Museum.
49.What does the underlined word “they” refer to
A.Smart designs. B.Patience and carefulness.

B.Because it’s easy to learn and requires no special tools.
C.Because it makes buildings stay strong in any disaster.
D.Because it uses smart designs and natural materials.

For many years, scientists thought lightning would always destroy (摧毁) trees. When lightning hit trees, most died or got badly hurt. But now, researchers found something surprising in forests. There’s a special type of tree that doesn’t just survive lightning—it actually uses lightning to help it grow better than other trees nearby.
In 2015, Researcher Evan Gora made an important discovery when he saw something strange in Panama’s rainforest. A Dipteryx tree had been hit by lightning, but it was hardly hurt. However, all the other trees around it were completely destroyed. This made scientists wonder: “Could lightning actually benefit this type of tree ”
Scientists tested this idea by studying 100 trees hit by lightning in a Panamanian forest for several years. They discovered something amazing: All 10 Dipteryx trees survived with little harm, but 60% of other types (种类) of trees died in two years. Lightning destroyed about 78% of vines (藤蔓) on Dipteryx trees. Each time lightning hit, it killed an average of 9.2 competing tree nearby. This helped Dipteryx trees get more sunlight and nutrients (营养物) from the soil.
Further research found that Dipteryx trees have some smart survival tricks. These trees can grow over 30 meters tall—much higher than other trees around them. Their wide, flat tops making them 68% more likely to be hit by lightning than other trees. Over their 300-year life, a Dipteryx tree might get hit by lightning six or more times—but it usually survives. “Being hit by lightning is actually good for them,” said scientist Gora in a new study.
This finding surprises experts because it shows some plants actually benefit from natural disasters like lightning. Now, researchers are trying to find other trees that can also use lightning to help themselves grow well, which could probably rewrite our understanding of forest ecosystems (生态系统) .
52.Which bar chart (柱状图) is TRUE according to Paragraph 3
Survival Numbers of Trees in Two Years
(100 trees in total)
A.B. C. D.
■ Dipteryx Trees ※ Other Types of Treees

A.By creating loud and special sounds
B.By scaring away animals that eat their leaves.
C.By providing special nutrients through the rain.
D.By killing competing trees and vines around them.
54.What can we infer from the passage
A.Dipteryx trees have some smart survival tricks.
B.Lightning helps small plants grow under Dipteryx trees.
C.Lightning can’t be helpful with the wide and flat tree tops.
D.Lightning may help Dipteryx trees reduce competition.
55.What will the writer probably discuss after the last paragraph
A.Other trees might also benefit from lightning.
B.Ecosystems can’t survive without lightning.
C.Other natural disasters help trees grow well.
D.Lightning also creates better conditions for animals
D
The study shows that animal-assisted therapy (治疗) can help students fight against homesickness and could be a useful tool in lowering post-secondary drop-out (辍学) rates.
In the study, 44 first-year university students who self-identified as homesick were given a survey to measure (衡量) levels of homesiclaiess, satisfaction with life and connectedness with campus. Half of the students completed eight weeks of dog therapy, while the other half were informed that their sessions would begin in eight weeks’ time. Dog therapy included 45-minute weekly sessions involving small group interactions with the dogs and their trainers, and engagement with (参与) other first-year students in the study.
Following the initial (开始的) eight-week session, students in both the treatment group and the non-treatment group completed the survey again. Those who completed the eight-week program experienced large decreases in homesickness and greater increase in satisfaction with life. They reported that sessions “felt like they were at home chatting with friends who brought their little pets.” While the non-treatment group reported an increase in their feelings of homesickness.
According to a 2009 report done for B.C.Stats, students who left college happy were almost twice as likely to feel a sense of belonging as those who left unhappy. Students who left university unhappy were almost twice as likely to say they did not feel a sense of belonging on campus. That’s why the therapy means a lot to university students who can’t enjoy the campus life.
56.What are the conclusions of this experiment
A.Animal-assisted therapy can measure levels of homesickness.
B.Dog therapy had no effect on students feelings of belonging on campus.
C.Dog therapy reduced homesickness and increased life satisfaction for students.
D.Animal-assisted therapy can make students feel more homesick.
57.What can we infer from the passage
A.Students who interacted with dogs will never feel homesick again.
B.Loneliness might get worse without treatment or support.

VIL任务型阅读。(65-66小,每小题2分,67-68小题,每小3分,共10分)
People often do things that make you angry. When this happens, just take a deep breath, count to ten in your mind, or even walk away for a few minutes if you can. Think about the situation carefully before you say or do anything. You’ll find that by giving yourself a little time to think, you’re more likely to find a good way to solve the problem.
I’m not telling you to let others walk all over you. I just want you to look for the good in people, even when they’re not nice to you. For example, imagine you’re taking your son or daughter to a basketball game. You’re standing in line, and the man behind you, who also has a child, starts pushing. You ask him to stop, but he gets mad and starts yelling. All of this is happening in front of both your child and his.
After things settle down, you might still feel angry and be mad at him in your head. But can you find anything good about this man Most people would say no. But think about it—at least he’s a good father, spending time with his kid. You don’t know much else about him, but you can still find some positive qualities in him.
We usually only pay attention to the bad things about people and forget the good things. But if you start looking for the good, you’ll see things in a new way. This can change how you feel and bring good things into your life. Just like the saying goes, “What goes around comes around.” If you focus on the good in others, they’ll notice the good in you, and good things will happen to you. For example, ___________
When you do this, you also let out anger and sadness, and finally you create positive energy. Try it with everyone, whether you know them or not. Making positive energy is important to your happiness and success. Nobody wants to live with negative energy or have a negative life!
65.Should we react right away when people make us angry
66.What positive qualities did the writer find in the angry man at the basketball game
67.What is the writer’s advice when people make you angry

China has been known as “a well-dressed country” since ancient times.Traditional costume has explained Chinese culture. The shapes, patterns and colors of traditional clothes reflect the history, culture and values of the country.
Hanfu, also known as Huafu, refers to the traditional clothing of the Han nationality in China. It has deeply influenced the Chinese fashion world for thousands of years.
A complete set of clothing of Hanfu was formed during the Han Dynasty. Circle-cut long sleeves represent “heaven”, showing a sense of beauty. And cross collars represent “earth”, which lead people to follow rules. The belt going straight towards the ground stands for honesty. Patterns are also important to Hanfu. Usually, objects like the sun, the moon, elephants, tigers or dragons mean that the wearer belongs to the upper class.
The design of Hanfu shows Chinese culture in its details. With loose (宽松的) sleeves and bottom, Hanfu allows wearers to walk beautifully and show good manners. It also reflects the characteristics of the Han nationality, which are politeness and quietness.
In ancient times, Hanfu had a great influence on clothing style of some countries around China, such as the Japanese kimono and the Korean hanbok. However, in the Qing Dynasty, the government made strict rules to make Han people wear Manchu clothing. After the Qing Dynasty, Chinese people started to wear Western-style clothes and Hanfu disappeared from people's daily life.
At the beginning of the 21st century, increasingly, the young generation have realized the beauty of Hanfu. A large number of young people enjoy wearing Hanfu in a trip or in a party. And they are active in protecting the Chinese culture. Now, Hanfu festivals, like the Hanfu Cultural Festival in Xitang, can interest thousands of Chinese culture lovers.
Hanfu is not just a piece of clothing but it’s a carrier of Chinese culture. For Chinese young people, they feel strongly proud when they wear Hanfu. It leads to a renewed Chinese fashion style.
1. The Han people had worn Hanfu for thousands of years. 2. Han people 74 wear Hanfu in the Qing Dynasty. 3. Hanfu disappeared from people’s daily life after the Qing Dynasty. 1. They only read comics and listen to the music, and they like American culture more than theirs. But is this true A recent survey shows something different. Most French middle school students love music. With eighty-six percent putting it as their top hobby, above the cinema sports and television. French kids read a lot and like different things from Japanese cartoons to American story books. Many French people worry that their children watch too many American films and listen to too many American music. But this survey showed that French young people liked their own culture. As Silvia Berlin, a student from Paris, says: “I love watching American TV but I watching more French programs. I love French.”

Recently, our school has done a survey on “Students’ Favorite English Class Activities”. Topping the list are educational games, favored by 35 percent of learners, while role-play is loved by 27 percent because it’s fun and active. 20 percent enjoy discussions, and the remaining 18 percent prefer other options like storytelling or hands-on tasks.
What makes games so attractive They transform learning into an adventure, helping us absorb knowledge effortlessly. However, I find role-play even more valuable. By stepping into different characters, we not only practice real-life language but also develop empathy and teamwork. I still remember how a simple “buying and selling” role-play pushed my team to think creatively and cooperate easily.
These results prove that active participation is key to mastering a language. A balanced mix of games, role-play, and discussions would surely make every English class both effective and unforgettable.
