Have you ever thought that stopping waste food is difficult Actually, there are many ways to avoid wasting food. We can buy only what we need or use older products first. But the French city of Colmar has a clever idea. It has been giving free chickens to its people since 2015.
When then-mayor (时任市长) Gilber Meyer was running (竞选) for office, he used “one family, one hen” as his slogan (口号). Once he was in office, he carried out this project by working with two chicken farms. He told people that raising chickens would soon pay off. At first, more than 200 homes from four of the city’s districts joined the project. It turned out to be a big success.
“Over the years, other districts have also joined in,” says Eric Straumann, the now-mayor of Colmar. “Since 2022, all 20 of our districts have taken part.”
People have to make a real effort. Officials from the city’s waste department can check on the chickens’ condition at any time. They will also make sure that each home has enough space for the animals.
So far, more than five thousand chickens have been given out. They are usually fed on kitchen scraps (残渣). “A chicken lives up to four years on average,” says Straumann. “If it eats 150g of bio-waste every day, that means 273.35 tons less waste over ten years. Chengdu is the first in the Chinese mainland to host the World Games (TWG). It will be held from August 7 to August 17 this year. Recently, the torch (火炬) for the World Games 2025 Chengdu was shown to the public. It’s named “Zhumeng”, which means “Chasing Dream (逐梦)”.
