My family would describe me as anything but a risk-taker. “Grandma drives faster than you!” my younger son
likes to joke with me. So when I announced I was going to step outside my comfort zone and sign up for a
self-defense course, my children, my husband, and even my mom were a bit doubtful.
A gym near my house was offering two-hour classes including boxing, wrestling and judo. I signed up for it
and for the next days I questioned whether yoga would have been a wiser choice. The morning of the class, I pulled
up to the gym, grabbed my water bottle along with a bit of courage I brought with me, and walked inside. We
learned how to kick and knee someone where it counts and how to strike using the palms of our hands. After the
coach showed various escape skills, I found myself questioning my presence in such a setting. However, in the next
second, I reminded myself that I had set out this journey to explore the furthest part of my abilities and to challenge
the boundary of what I believed I was able to achieve.
Before I entered the gym, I never imagined I would have the confidence and courage to throw a blow that
could discourage someone twice my size. Almost two years later, I still attend classes. As the oldest female in the
class, I push myself to keep up, try harder and, more importantly, not quit.
Between increasing my strength and feeling confident about protecting myself (although I hope I never have
to test my skills outside of the gym), I’m proud of the risk I took in signing up for the course. I know that defending
myself is not about strength, it’s about strategy. At the same time, I’m calmer and less anxious — a benefit my
family enjoys.
As for my driving, after a recent lunch date, my mom suggested I speed up to at least the speed limit. She didn’
t want to be late for her tennis match.
4. How did the author’s family think of her according to Paragraph 1
A. She was dependable. B. She drove fast.
C. She liked taking risks. D. She used to enjoy her comfort zone.
5. What does the underlined word “boundary” in the second paragraph mean
A. Limit. B. Honor. C. Aim. D. Record.
6. What contributes to the success of the author
A. Her never giving up. B. Strategies from the classmates.
C. Skills from the coach. D. Encouragement from the family.
7. What can we infer from the last paragraph
A. The training leads to better control in daily life.
B. Mom is still worried about the author’s driving ability.
C. Calmness gained from training increases mom’s confidence in me.
D. Self-defense training prevent the author from arguments with her families.
C
On my first day at my current job, I came to work expecting a friendly welcome — but I was met with
silence. After a quick introduction to the business manager, I was told where to get my ID and then left to figure the
rest out on my own. I clearly remember walking into my first departmental meeting, eager to meet my colleagues,
only for the boss to skip over introducing me completely. Not really the type of environment that inspires a feeling
of belonging.
The primary loneliness stuck with me. Instead of waiting for the workplace culture to change, I decided to
create my own sense of community. I started a lunch group, which grew into a regular coffee hour. I invited new
hires to join informal meetups, promoting connections before and after department meetings. Over time, this small,
self-made network became my spirit support at work. But what if I hadn’t built that community myself
Chances are that I would have left the job. Increasingly, researchers are realizing that developing a sense of
belonging is critical for workforce stability. Historically, studies on supporting workforce stability have focused on
more basic factors like pay, hours, and workload. These are all important qualities that cannot be overlooked. But
they are not enough.
You must have heard of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. The theory suggests lower-level needs must be met
before you can progress to higher-level needs. At the base of Maslow’s hierarchy, physiological and safety needs
must be met. This is where fundamentals like pay, hours, and workplace safety would fall. Just above that is the
need for love and belonging. In a workplace, this translates to a sense of connection and feeling like part of the
team.
According to Maslow’s theory, it’s impossible to be the best version of ourselves without meeting these
fundamental needs. So although, yes, being paid fairly is important, to motivate employees to operate at their
highest level, you need to create an environment where people feel they truly matter.
8. What did the writer experience on the first day of his new job
A. A hearty reception from colleagues. B. Thorough guidance at the workplace.
C. Emotional distance between coworkers. D. Brief training from the business manager.
9. What is the writer’s purpose of starting a lunch group
A. Establishing a regular break time. B. Building up a shared identity.
C. Passing on the workplace culture. D. Conducting meetings during meals.
10. Why does the writer introduce Maslow’s theory
A. To describe an ideal working environment. B. To discuss spiritual role in job satisfaction.
C. To suggest an effective management method. D. To explain factors to keeping the workforce.
11. What does the last paragraph imply for a workplace
A. Basic demands are equal to emotional needs. B. Fair payment is the core of staff motivation.
C. A culture of belonging develops staff’s potential. D. Basic needs make the best versions of staff.
D
As the old saying goes, we can’t manage what we can’t measure. And this rings especially true when it comes
to conservation. Trying to measure biodiversity is a critical part of WWF’s conservation work.
Camera traps are one of the primary tools we use to collect data on biodiversity. We are all familiar with the
powerful images of wildlife that camera traps can shoot. But what you may not realize is that behind every one of
those beautiful photos, we also collect thousands of photos without any animals at all. So WWF joined forces with
other conservation organizations and Google to develop a better way to manage camera trap data called Wildlife
Insights.
Wildlife Insights is an online platform that uses artificial intelligence to automatically filter out all those
annoying blank images, find the ones that contain wildlife, and identify which species is in a photo, even if it’s just
the end of a tail or the tip of a nose! Wildlife Insights is currently able to identify 1,300 different species.
With the help of tools like Wildlife Insights, information is now getting into the hands of decision-makers
more quickly, which is critical for species like the endangered greater glider (大袋鼯). A third of their habitat
burned in the disastrous bush fires that swept through Australia in 2020, including their tree hollows, which can
take up to 250 years to form. As an emergency measure, WWF-Australia and partners quickly set up artificial nest
boxes and monitored them using cameras, unsure whether the gliders would move into their new modern homes.
But after analyzing the photos in Wildlife Insights, we were amazed to find that gliders were using every
single one of the nest boxes we set up, which meant that we could quickly and confidently expand this effort to a
larger area.
With the ever-mounting challenges facing biodiversity, it’s essential that we continue innovating through
technology and partnerships like Wildlife Insights. Rapid access to actionable data means that we can make faster,
more effective conservation decisions.
12. Why is measuring biodiversity critical for conservation efforts
A. It helps to identify endangered species quickly.
B. It raises public awareness about biodiversity loss.
C. It allows for the tracking of wildlife changing patterns.
D. It provides data for making informed conservation decisions.
13. What is the problem with camera traps
A. They are difficult to fix. B. They fail to shoot clear images.
C. They have limited storage. D. They generate much useless data.
14. What does the underlined phrase “filter out” in Paragraph 3 mean
A. Edit. B. Compare. C. Remove. D. Show.
15. What does the case of the greater glider illustrate
A. The impact of case analysis. B. The value of Wildlife Insights.
C. The advantage of artificial nest boxes. D. The necessity of habitat protection.

Raising awareness is a powerful tool for change. By sharing information about wildlife conservation on social
media, you help educate others about the importance of protecting our planet’s biodiversity. Whether it’s posting
articles, supporting campaigns, or engaging in discussions, spreading the word encourages more people to take
action.

In a coastal village named Seaford, lived a brave young woman named Agatha, who was known for her
adventurous nature. From the time she could walk, she would eagerly run towards the crashing waves, feeling the
sand under her feet and the cool sea spray on her face. She had a strong will and a kind heart. Agatha loved the
ocean deeply and spent most of her days exploring the beautiful beaches and sparkling waters that surrounded her
house.
One sunny morning, while walking along the shore, Agatha noticed something unusual. A group of seagulls
were circling above the crashing waves and making strange cries. Concerned for their well-being, she followed
them, her instinct (本能) guiding her toward danger.
As she approached a high cliff (悬崖), Agatha stopped in shock. On a narrow ledge (岩架), high above the
rough waves, lay a young dolphin trapped in a thick fishing net. Its shiny body shone under the golden rays of the
sun, but the net held it tightly. With each struggle, the net tightened around its delicate body, leaving painful marks
on its skin. Its tail moved helplessly, each movement a request for help, while its bitter cries for assistance echoed
through the air.
A sense of urgency filled her, pushing her forward with determination. Realizing that the time was tight,
Agatha knew she had to act immediately to free this poor creature from its difficult position before it became too
tired or was swept away by the rising tide.

the boundary of what I believed I was able to achieve.

【答案】8. C 9. B 10. D 11. C

A Memorable Fun Sports Meet
Last week our school held a much-anticipated fun sports meet, bringing a precious relaxation to all senior one
students.
All classes of senior one participated actively. The most popular events included the “two-person three-legged
race” where partners tied legs and ran in harmony, and the “tug-of-war with balloons” where teams pulled ropes
without popping the balloons tied to their wrists, filling the playground with cheers.
This activity not only helped us relax from our busy studies, but also improved our teamwork and friendship.
It was such a great experience that we all look forward to more activities like this.

___
【答案】Version 1
Paragraph 1: Heart racing, Agatha ran back to the village to get help. Her bare feet stepped quickly on the
soft sand, and the salty wind brushed her cheeks as she shouted for villagers at the top of her lungs. Several
fishermen and young people who were mending nets by the shore immediately noticed her anxious look and
followed her without hesitation. They carried thick ropes, sharp knives and simple rescue tools, rushing to the
beach where the poor dolphin was trapped. Working together carefully, they cut the messy fishing net bit by bit,
afraid of hurting the dolphin’s smooth skin. The dolphin seemed to feel their kindness, staying still and letting out
soft, grateful sounds from its mouth.
Paragraph 2: As the dolphin was gently released into the waters, it hesitated for a moment. It swam slowly
around Agatha and the villagers, its fin waving lightly as if saying thank you. Agatha reached out her hand and
touched the dolphin’s warm body softly, with tears of joy shining in her eyes. After circling three times, the dolphin
leaped high out of the water, drawing a beautiful arc in the golden sunset, then dived into the blue sea and
disappeared gradually. Watching the dolphin swim freely again, Agatha smiled widely, knowing that this warm
rescue would be the most unforgettable memory in her whole life because it served as a reminder that the true joy
in life came from selflessly giving a hand to those in need.
Version 2
Paragraph 1: Heart racing, Agatha ran back to the village to get help. With every fiber of her body trembling
with anxiety, she sprinted along the shore, her voice piercing / ripping the quiet seaside air as she cried out for
assistance. Upon catching sight of her desperate expression, several experienced fishermen and warm-hearted
villagers dropped whatever they were doing and rushed to follow her without a second thought. Armed with sharp
knives and sturdy ropes, they approached the trapped dolphin cautiously, cutting the tangled fishing net with the
utmost care to avoid injuring its delicate skin. The intelligent creature, sensing their goodwill, remained calm and
let out soft, reassuring chirps throughout the rescue.
Paragraph 2: As the dolphin was gently released into the waters, it hesitated for a moment. It lingered beside
Agatha and the villagers, gliding back and forth in a slow circle as if expressing its sincere gratitude. Agatha
stretched out her hand, gently stroking its smooth and warm back, her eyes glistening with tears of relief and joy.
Then, with a powerful flick of its tail, it leaped spectacularly into the air, carving a dazzling arc against the golden
sunset before diving gracefully into the vast ocean. Watching the dolphin vanish into the blue waves, Agatha’s
heart swelled with warmth, cherishing this touching moment as the most precious memory of her life.
