The International Linguistics Olympiad (IOL) is a competition for pre-university students, held in a different country
each year since 2003. It challenges participants, both individually and in teams, to solve linguistic (语言学的) puzzles. To
compete at the IOL, no special knowledge is required, only basic language concepts, logic, patience, and creative thinking.
Try this beginner sample to see if the IOL is right for you.
Contest Rules
Each individual contestant or team must choose a working language for their problems and solutions, a choice that
cannot be changed less than two weeks before the Olympiad begins.
The individual contest involves solving five problems in six hours, whereas the team contest features one problem
with two hours less.
Unless instructed, giving multiple answers will receive zero marks. Besides, a detailed explanation is required for each
answer; failure to provide one will result in a lower score.
Awards
The team contest will award up to one gold, two silver, and three bronze medals. In the individual contest, the
number of gold, silver, and bronze medals awarded shall be in the ratio 1:2:3, with the total number of medals being

Psychologists have become increasingly interested in how switching between languages influences thinking — a
phenomenon known as the “foreign language effect”. Unlike linguistic determinism, which suggests a language’s structure
shapes thought, this effect stems from the general experience of using a second language, often making people more rational
and open-minded.
Research pioneered by Professor Boaz Keysar shows this strongly influences moral reasoning. When considering the
“trolley problem” — whether to sacrifice one life to save five — people are twice as likely to make the utilitarian (实用
主义的) choice when using their second language. The emotional distance provided by a foreign language appears to reduce
instincts (本能) reactions.
The effect also reduces classic cognitive biases. People’s distaste for financial loss is much less strong when bets are
presented in a foreign language. Speaking a second language can also lessen how easily we are influenced by how
information is framed and our reluctance to quit failing projects. Similarly, the “bias blind spot”, where people believe they
are less biased than others, diminishes when thinking in another tongue. Over a decade of research, the effect has proven
consistent and repeatable.
Beyond decision-making, the foreign language effect impacts memory. Recalling traumatic events in a second
language causes less emotional distress. Recent studies show it also reduces false memories: When presented with
misleading information, people are better at avoiding errors if the material is in their foreign language, as they engage in
more careful, deliberative thinking when processing information in a non-native tongue.
In our globalized world, this research suggests a practical cognitive tool. Deliberately switching to a second language
can help us become more detached and objective. Whether evaluating investments, processing personal upsets, or
considering controversial policies, using a foreign language can provide valuable emotional distance and reduce automatic
reactions. For language learners, this is an unexpected payoff; for others, it’s a compelling reason to start learning.
24.What does paragraph 3 indicate about the effect
A.It is a surprising new discovery. B.It requires a long time to prove.
C.It turns out to be reliable over time. D.Its mechanisms are fully understood.
25.Why are people less likely to form false memories when recalling in a foreign language
A.They give top priority to correctness. B.They get in a more thoughtful process.
C.They engage in more automatic thinking. D.They avoid thinking about difficult topics.
26.What is a practical benefit of applying the effect in real life
A.Reducing automatic reactions entirely. B.Ensuring perfectly reasonable decisions.
C.Accelerating the decision-making process. D.Increasing objectivity and emotional distance.
27.What is the main idea of the text
A.Benefits of using a second language. B.Discussion on linguistic determinism.
C.Necessity of learning a second language. D.Challenges of learning foreign languages.

In 1998, British adventurer Karl Bushby looked down a road in Chile and set a goal: walk all the way home to Hull,
England — without using a single form of transport, which was audacious. What he didn’t know then was that the journey
he thought would take eight years would stretch into a remarkable 27-year trek (跋涉) across continents, oceans and history.
渭南市普通高中联盟 2025-2026 学年第二学期阶段检测(一)高二英语试题 第 1 页 共 3 页
Now, after walking 36,000 miles, surviving the attack of polar bears, swimming across seas, and navigating countless visa
setbacks, the 56-year-old adventurer is finally on the home stretch.
Bushby began his adventure in Punta Arenas, Chile, trekking north through South and North America, eventually
reaching Alaska. In 2006, he attempted one of the most dangerous legs of the journey: crossing the frozen Bering Strait into
Siberia. Armed with a gun to scare off polar bears and forced to leap between moving blocks of ice, he achieved what few
people on Earth have ever done.
His challenges didn’t stop there. Last year, when he couldn’t safely travel through a European country, he took on a
new challenge — swimming across the Caspian Sea. With a support team and co-swimmer Angela Maxwell, Bushby spent
31 days completing the 179-mile crossing, swimming a total of 132 hours.
After reaching Azerbaijan, he continued through Turkey, and now stands less than 2,000 miles from home. He hopes
to recenter Europe this summer and walk into Hull by September 2026. Returning home after nearly three decades, he
admits, will feel unrealistic. He left when he was 29. He will return at 58. He says reuniting with family will mean “getting
to know each other again”.
Bushby walks an average of 30km a day and rests wherever he can find shelter. His mission, called the Goliath
Expedition, has outlasted five UK prime ministers, a global health incident, and numerous wars — but his spirit remains as
strong as it was in 1998. And the world is cheering him on as he enters the final chapter of one of the most extraordinary
human endurance journeys ever attempted.
28.What does the underlined word “audacious” in paragraph 1 probably mean
A.Common. B.Meaningless. C.Ambitious. D.Practical.
29.Why did Bushby swim across the Caspian Sea
A.To set a new world record. B.To avoid the potential risk.
C.To shorten the distance. D.To test his physical limits.
30.What does Bushby mean by saying “getting to know each other again”
A.It is awkward to see his family. B.It is too long since he left home.
C.He feels regretful for traveling. D.He wants to accompany his family more.
31.What does the Goliath Expedition symbolize
A.The power of spirit. B.The need for recognition.
C.The meaning of exploration. D.The importance of adaptation.

Readers may be familiar with the humorous idea that humans are only the third-cleverest species on Earth after mice
and dolphins. But perhaps Douglas Adams should have included dolphins’ cetacean cousins. In a paper just published in
Open Mind, CETI researchers describe a strikingly human-like feature in whale communication. Sperm whales
communicate using a series of clicks researchers call “codas”, which look a lot like vowels in human languages.
For linguists, vowels are characterized by the free flow of air through a vibrating vocal tract. In contrast, consonants
involve disruptions of the airflow. A vowel’s basic pitch(technically called F0)is determined by the speaker’s sex and body
size. But by moving tongue and lips we shape the sound into higher-pitched “formants”(F1, F2, F3, etc.). Whether we hear
an “ah” or an “ee” depends on the relationship between these formants.
To humans, sperm-whale codas do not sound like pitches at all; the clicks are much too infrequent and irregular. The
clicks become a continuous tone only when they occur 20 to 40 times per second. But when the whales’ silences were
removed in software, the researchers could consider them as pitches nevertheless, and look more closely at their other
qualities.
The next step was taken with the help of artificial intelligence(AI). The researchers used an AI system trained to learn
human language to examine the codas. Gasper Begus, a linguist at the University of California and the study’s lead author,
says that the AI led them to study the pitch patterns of the clicks — ones that work like human vowel sounds.
Sure enough, the whale codas contained two sound patterns resembling those in the F1 and F2 formants of human
vowels, but at a much lower pitch. Based on this resemblance, the researchers called them the a-coda and i-coda vowels.
They even found that whales could produce diphthongs — two vowels gliding quickly from one to another, like the ah-ee
渭南市普通高中联盟 2025-2026 学年第二学期阶段检测(一)高二英语试题 第 1 页 共 3 页
sound in English words like “ride” and “time”. The whales do all this often in what researchers call “conversations”.
Exactly what the whales may be saying to each other remains unknown — although working that out is CETI’s
eventual goal. That will require a large body of vocalizations to study, as well as an equally big number of observations of
how the animals behave and interact with each other.
32.Why does the author refer to Douglas Adams’s joke about mice, dolphins and humans
A.To illustrate a point B.To give an example
C.To make a comparison D.To introduce a topic
33.What does the word “disruptions” underlined in paragraph 2 mean
A.complete stops B.breaks in flow C.increases in speed D.extra energy
34.What do we know about sperm whales from the passage
A.They communicate in quite a similar way to humans.
B.They produce continuous clicks that sound like pitches.
C.They create click patterns resembling human vowels.
D.They could produce diphthongs like “ride” and “time”.
35.What can we infer about the CETI researchers from the last paragraph
A.They have paid more attention to the whales’ vocalizations than to their behaviors.
B.They have uncovered the nature of the whales’ social behaviors and interactions.
C.They will decode the whales’ calls by observing their behaviors and interactions.
D.They will carry out more research to better understand the whales’ conversations

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。
At dawn and dusk, forests appear muted and nearly monochromatic (单色的) to human eyes. But white-tailed deer
might see a very different, aglow landscape.
Since the 1970s, biologists have understood that deer leave signposts — from rubbing antlers on trees or scraping
the ground — for scent-based communication. 36 The researchers scanned 146 such signposts in Georgia using
ultraviolet lights. They found that although the signposts look ordinary in daylight, they reemit blue-green light when
exposed to UV wavelengths common at dawn and dusk. This likely happens because antler rubs strip away bark, revealing
lignin-rich inner wood that fluoresces (散发荧光) in a way bark does not.
The visual contrast also intensifies as the breeding season approaches. 37
This shift in light is particularly relevant, the authors say, because the eyes of white-tailed deer have enhanced
sensitivity to short- and middle-wavelength colors in this stage, especially under low-light conditions.
Traditionally, mammalian (哺乳动物的) biofluorescence has been studied as a subject of the animal itself. 38
However, not all experts are convinced. One skeptic not involved in the study noted that if humans cannot see the
markings under natural light, deer likely cannot either. 39
The researchers describe the study as a first step. 40
A.But one group of researchers wondered whether these marks also provide visual messages.
B.Therefore, deer rely solely on scent for communication throughout the year.
C.In such period, marks are brighter because male deer antlers have fully hardened and their rubs can expose more inner
wood.
D.This discovery suggests that biofluorescence might also be embedded in the environment, adding a largely unseen layer
to how animals communicate.
E.This argument highlights a key limitation of the current study: its findings are based on technical measurement, not
observed animal behavior.
F.This means that deer are likely color-blind to red and orange hues.
G.Future research will need to confirm whether deer actually use these visual cues in their natural habitat.

Six years as a space reporter taught me that chaos rules everything. Nothing is completely predictable or controlled. I

sides of the 51 in slightly bright red and pink. Jupiter and Venus also played roles in this performance. It felt like
bearing 52 to something close to a miracle.
Four minutes later, the eclipse 53 . The sun brightened again. And the clouds 54 violently,

Lin Hao, a 17-year-old key member of the school track and field team, had been training hard for the important city
trial. Only the top four teams could qualify for the provincial competition. The team’s timing device, necessary for their
daily practice, was lost the day before.
Worried that the team might lose the qualification, Lin Hao went alone at dawn to search for it on the suburban
training path. Soon the weather turned much worse: heavy snow was falling, and the wind was blowing strongly. The path
was quiet and empty, with no people or cars around.
Suddenly, a low cry broke the silence. Lin Hao ran over at once and found a junior student trembling under a tree. He

was cold and scared, for he had lost his way back to school. Worse still, Lin Hao found there was no signal on his phone in
this remote area.
Lin Hao was facing a difficult choice. If he kept searching for the timing device, the lost boy might be in great danger
in the heavy snow. If he stopped to help the boy, he might miss the only chance to find the device, and his team would fail
to take part in the trial. Standing in the snow, Lin Hao hesitated, torn between honor and duty.

W: That’s the bad thing — we signed for a year, and it ends at the end of this year. However, the house owner wanted to
decorate it for his son’s wedding next month. I’ll have to find a new apartment then.
M: Don’t worry. My colleague’s flat is for rent now. It’s just next to my door.

W: Sure, but who are you doing this for I don’t want to go out giving information that will help those big companies sell
more junk food to children.
M: Don’t worry. It’s the opposite. I work for the Green Market Research company. We help eco-friendly companies tell
consumers why they should buy their products.
W: So, what kind of questions are you asking
M: Well, do you like to buy organic food and look for products with simple packaging
W: I do try to buy organic whenever I can, and I definitely avoid products with over-packaging even if they’re bright and
luxurious. It’s just so wasteful.
M: Great! Do you think the price difference affects your decision Sometimes eco-friendly products can be more expensive.
W: Yes, it does. But I’m willing to support sustainable practices. I think it’s necessary in the long run.
M: That’s a fantastic point. We’ve found that many consumers share your views.

【原文】W: Dad, how about a rural eco-tour for our family trip this summer
M: A rural eco-tour What does that involve, Emma
W: Well, there’s a program in a village in Zhejiang. Visitors can stay in local guesthouses, help with organic farming and
learn traditional crafts like bamboo weaving.
M: That sounds quite hands-on. But your brother Bob might find farming too tiring.
W: Actually, the brochure says there are different levels of activities. For kids, they have lighter tasks like feeding chickens
or picking vegetables.
M: How long is the program
W: It’s a three-day, two-night package. But here’s a problem: the most popular weeks in July are already fully booked.

The twins Mary and Jim were filled with excitement as they thought of the surprise they were planning for Mother’s
Day. They planned to make fried eggs and porridge. Early in the morning, they slipped into the kitchen, feeling eager for
what to do next.
“Let me cook the porridge first,” Jim said and he couldn’t wait to turn on the stove. However, things didn’t go
smoothly. The fire was so strong that the porridge boiled over from the pot. And the kitchen was in a mess. Mary hurriedly
knelt down to wipe the floor.
Just when they were at a loss what to do, their father came to help. “No big deal. My sweeties. Just remember to
watch the heat.” He comforted the kids patiently, patting them on the shoulders. With his guidance, Mary and Jim managed
to cook a big meal.
