①Did you know that architecture (建筑) can shape who we become Architecture has a big influence on us. It can affect our character, mood, and health.
②Connecting nature with buildings is good for our mind and body. A study from Heidelberg University in Germany found that people who grow up in the countryside are less likely to have mental illnesses than those raised in cities. Vancouver, Canada, is a city surrounded by mountains and the ocean. Its buildings are carefully planned so tall ones never block people’s view of the natural scenery.
③Architecture without soul (灵魂) can also change our moods, according to The Guardian. For example, in a study in Lower Manhattan, New York, people felt worse as they walked past a supermarket with boring glass walls. They even walked faster, as if they wanted to leave quickly. But when they reached lively restaurants and shops, their moods got much better.
④To make architecture more interesting, designers should consider the height of ceilings. Studies showed that rooms with lower ceilings can make you more focused, while rooms with higher ceilings can make you more creative. Designers should also avoid too many flat and straight designs, because such designs don’t allow light and shadow to create interesting patterns (图案/纹理). They also don’t fit well with nature, making buildings seem boring. To add life to architecture, designers should choose colors carefully to create different moods, according to Forbes. Bright colors like yellow and orange can make people feel energetic and happy, while calm colors like blue and green can help people feel relaxed.

①In the world of modern science and technology, China’s “artificial sun” (人工太阳) project has caught the eye of people around the globe. The “artificial sun” is officially named the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST). EAST is a very important machine for studying nuclear fusion (核聚变). Nuclear fusion is similar to how the sun makes energy. Scientists believe it can give people almost endless clean energy in the future.

The Taklimakan Desert in Xinjiang, China’s largest desert, covers an area of 337, 600 square kilometers. It’s a harsh place where few plants can grow. Strong winds sweeping across this vast land often carry masses of sand. 66
Local people, workers, and volunteers started planting a belt of trees in 1978 to stop the sand. They carried water and fought against wind and sand daily. Planting trees in such a dry, sandy environment was difficult. 67 On November 28, 2024, the last group of trees was planted in Yutian County, marking the completion of this 46-year-long green belt project.
68 “It works like a wall against the sand, ” a local official said. It helps with farming, and farmers can grow more crops as less sand blows onto their fields. By blocking sandstorms, the trees help farmers grow more crops than before. 69 Now, more birds and small animals are appearing in the area, bringing new life to the landscape.
This green belt is part of the Three-North Shelterbelt Forest Program (TSFP) . Over the past 46 years, China has planted 320, 000 square kilometers of trees under this program. 70 The TSFP is set to be completed by 2050. By then, the north of China will have a much better ecological environment.
A.Yet they never gave up.

China has hundreds of ancient festivals. However, many of these 81 (tradition) festivals are slowly disappearing. Here we pick one that is well worth remembering.
It is 82 (call) Renri Festival and celebrated on the seventh day of the first lunar month. It marks the day when the goddess Nüwa 83 (create) human beings. According to ancient Chinese mythology (神话), Nüwa formed chickens on the first day of Chinese New Year. From the 84 (two) to the sixth day, she added dogs, pigs, sheep, oxen and horses. 85 (final), on the seventh day, she gave life to humans.
The festival dates back to at least the Jin Dynasty. People used to celebrate it by 86 (wear) human-shaped head decorations. The decorations were made of silk, colored paper, and gold and silver 87 (leaf). The tradition became very popular during the Tang Dynasty. It is also believed that fine weather on Renri is a sign 88 a fruitful year.
Nowadays, some still celebrate 89 festival as part of Chinese New Year. They often prepare a “soup of seven treasures,” made with seven fresh seasonal vegetables such as leek (韭菜) 90 celery (芹菜) .
