On TikTok, for instance, AI sorts the messages so that the first ones you see are probably your favorites. But before an AI can do any of that, developers must train it. And the training requires energy.
AI training is powered mostly by fossil fuels (化石燃料) like coal and oil. Less than 25 percent of AIs use low-carbon energy sources such as hydroelectricity and nuclear power during training. In fact, researchers now worry that training’s need for energy could soon become a huge problem. The energy to develop AI comes from electricity. And making electricity gives off carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases into the air.
Language-processing (语言处理) AI systems learn by devouring texts in a certain language. This might include “reading” a lot of information in a short time. Such training uses a lot of energy. To translate between English and Chinese, for example, an AI model may deal with millions or even billions of translated books and articles. In this way, it learns which words and phrases match. Then, when given a new text, it offers its own translation.
In 2019, researchers worked out the influence of developing AI model named Transformer. It gave off a huge 626,000 pounds of carbon dioxide. That’s the same as the greenhouse gases that would be poured by five American cars from when they were made to when they were thrown away.
Today, most AI development happens at data (数据) centers. These computer-filled buildings take up about 2 percent US electricity use and 1 percent of global energy use. Some AI experts have given a warning about the danger these AIs bring.

A.To speak highly of AI’s power B.To praise the work of researchers.
C.To present greenhouse gases of American cars. D.To show the effect of developing Transformer.
55.What can we infer (推断) from the last paragraph
A.Most AI’s development takes place in data centers.
B.AI’s development takes up a small amount of energy.
C.People should pay attention to the energy use of AI.
D.People should take action to reduce greenhouse gases.

Near my home lies a small lake surrounded by a walking path (小路). When my children were younger, I took them to this place a few times a week. The experience of walking along the path was truly wonderful, as it allowed us to be close to nature and enjoy its beauty.
One autumn day, however, I noticed that the path wasn’t looking so good It was full of rubbish that other walkers had left along the way. The next time we went there, I took a large bag with me. As we walked along the lake, we picked the rubbish up and put it in the bag.
Before putting the bag into the car, I looked back at the lake shining in the sun and the trees full of beautiful red and golden leaves, and I smiled. It took us twice as long as usual to get all the way around the lake. But we felt a sense of satisfaction that couldn’t be put into words. We didn’t make the lake more beautiful, but we removed some things that made it less so.
In this life we are all more important than we realize. Every single thing we do can add or take away from the beauty of this world. We all need to make wise choices to contribute to the world. We need to do our part and give something back. Maybe it is an act of kindness, a word of love, or even picking up a single piece of rubbish.
