Deep in the remote floodplain of Angola’s Kwando River,Kerllen Costa and his team were desperately searching for a campsite when they spotted an elder alone on a small island. As they approached, the elder questioned him,“Why were the people with you watching river birds with their telescopes ”
When he explained they were a team of scientists on an expedition(考察),the elder told him,“If you only look at the bird, you won’t be able to understand how the bird communicates with the tree and how the bird interacts with the water.” Costa asked him how he knew this and the elder replied,“Well, because how would you know what’s in a landscape—what’s its story—if there’re no people in it It’s only the people that bring history to it.” This has guided Costa’s work at the rivers of the Angolan Highlands Water Tower:building relationships of trust with local communities.
Local communities have developed lifestyles over generations that protect and respect their homeland.Understanding what it means to protect these environments, means meeting, listening, and knowing the people who live there. So Costa often spends nights in villages listening to local elders share their beliefs on existence and has spent weeks going through remote parts of the forest with local hunters.“There were several different moments when the local people were saying,‘Listen, you and your scientists, you might say this, but we know for sure it’s this for a reason,’” says Costa.
The human approach Costa puts at the helm(舵轮) of his team’s efforts is a big step forward in the world of conservation.“That can shock some of the more conservative ways of thinking in terms of conservation. And there still is that difficulty to try and understand we shouldn’t create a national park. Why not allow people to still wander and use the systems that they already used for the last five generations I really feel success should be people being able to still manage their own natural heritage and still living according to their traditions,” Costa stresses.
1.What can we learn from the elder’s words in paragraph 2
A.A landscape with people has a soul.
B.The area has rich resources of history.
C.The local ecosystem is being destroyed.
D.The telescopes disturb the birds too much.
2.What’s the key to Costa’s job
A.Sharpening the expedition skills.
B.Following the principles of nature.
C.Having a close bond with the locals.
D.Taking field trips with a good hunter.
3.What is Costa’s attitude towards setting up a national park
A.Indifferent. B.Confident.
C.Conservative. D.Disapproval.
4.Which of the following can best describe Costa

Every July, the western sandpiper,a small migratory bird, travels from Alaska to the coast of Peru along the Pacific Flyway.Along the way,the wetlands of California’s Central Valley provide crucial resting and feeding wetlands.Traditionally, rice farmers in the region flood their fields after harvest to decompose(分解) remaining vegetation.Through the BirdReturns program, farmers are rewarded for flooding their fields earlier in fall and later in spring, creating temporary wetlands for migratory birds during their southward and northward journeys. To figure out where these alternative habitats are most needed,BirdReturns uses data from eBird—a community science project composed of birders’ recorded sightings— to assess where and when migratory birds typically land in the Central Valley.Researchers combine that information with satellite data showing when and where surface water is most available, and where it’s needed.
BirdReturns is not like traditional conservation strategies in which organizations buy land and protect it in perpetuity.Instead,it’s a market-based program that pays farmers to flood their fields for a certain amount of time, rather like renting bird habitat, explains Julia Barfield,a program manager for the Nature Conservancy and part of BirdReturns. The amount of money that farmers receive is determined by a reverse auction(反向拍卖):The farmers bid(出价) for contracts, and the lowest bidder wins.Though the way sounds effective, but it is still tough to settle all problems.
“Although market-based solutions shouldn’t be the only answer, they are ‘a piece of the puzzle’,”says Natalia,a conservation ecologist at UC Santa Cruz who is not involved with BirdReturns.Daniel Karp,a researcher at Davis, sees the program as a rare conservation win. Most of the time, small farms that grow many different crops and plant pollinator-friendly(有利于传粉者的) flowers are the best way to conserve biodiversity in human-dominated landscapes. But although rice farmers grow only one crop, their large fields are an exception. The BirdReturns program is far from a complete solution, but “it’s this weird circumstance where you have a large,industrial-scale intensive agricultural system that can meanwhile support wildlife,” Karp says.
5.Why do farmers flood their fields originally
A.To make them wetlands.
B.To feed migratory birds.
C.To protect the house from the flood.
D.To break down leftover plant matter.
6.What does the underlined word “perpetuity” probably mean
A.Control. B.Practice.
C.Permanence. D.Development.
7.Why is the BirdReturns program unique
A.Farmers are paid to adjust farming schedules.
B.It partially relies on long-term land protection.
C.Farmers’ fields are rented for bird reproduction.
D.It is very time-saving and energy-efficient.
8.How do both Natalia and Karp view the program
A.A bitter lesson.
B.A beneficial trial.
C.A special success.
D.A detailed study.

A dropped bag of chips disturbed a cave ecosystem in Carlsbad Caverns National Park,New Mexico. This cave is almost cut off from the outside world,so introducing anything foreign can be harmful.“Things in the damp cave get wet quickly,” says park guide Ashley. The snack attracts tiny organisms, causing unwanted growth.Soon, small animals like crickets and spiders came to eat, spreading the pollution.Rangers found the bag within hours.“But that can be all it takes,”says Ashley.“I’m sure some crickets got a bit of the snack.”
Over 500 million people visit American public lands each year, creating many chances to harm wild places.“When you look at the numbers,it’s incredible,” says Watts, head of the Leave No Trace Center in Colorado,an organization aimed at minimizing human impact on nature.
Food waste takes a long time to break down, especially in certain areas.“It takes much longer for an apple core to rot in a desert than in a forest,” says Blye,a teacher at the University of Utah.Leaving waste introduces animals to an unnatural diet and changes their behavior with sometimes disastrous results.Bears who taste garbage and become a threat to humans may have to be put down.“Bears can get used to unnatural food in three weeks,” says Watts.“Everyone loses in this case.”
Biological waste is also problematic.Dog waste brings new bacteria into the ecosystem and scares away deer.Meanwhile, human waste and toilet paper introduces dangerous bacteria into water sources.
In national parks, trails(小路) are designed to avoid sensitive areas.Stepping off the trail, even for a quick photo, can scare wildlife away.Impacts from many visitors result in long-term damage to nature and wildlife. But people don’t think of that when they see the perfect photo opportunity.“It’s just such a hard thing to resist,” says Blye. The risk to sensitive ecosystems isn’t obvious.“It’s easy to think,oh,there are wildflowers over there.I shouldn’t step on that,” says Blye, but these tiny ecosystems full of microscopic organisms essential to desert life provide many benefits, including reducing the risk of erosion(侵蚀) and helping absorb rainfall, and can take hundreds of years to return to its original state.
9.What does Ashley mean by “But that can be all it takes.”
A.The rangers’ work is efficient.
B.The damage has been done.
C.The clean-up takes a long time.
D.The pollution has spread widely.
10.What is a result of foreign waste in public lands
A.A shift in animal behavior.
B.A shortage of food supplies.
C.A decline in bacterial species.
D.An increase in regional conflicts.
11.Why does the writer mention wildflowers in paragraph 5
A.To praise their benefits to desert life.
B.To highlight our damage to ecosystems.
C.To stress their significance for photography.
D.To show our unawareness of nature’s sensitivity.
12.It is conveyed in this passage that we should .

Our world faces a twofold challenge:feeding a population projected to reach 10 billion by 2050 while minimizing environmental degradation.Precision agriculture(PA) emerges as a transformative solution. 13 To put it precisely,it uses digital tools and real-time data to tailor farming practices—from planting to harvesting. This data-driven approach promises not only higher yields but also greater sustainability, making it a cornerstone of modern food systems.
One example is the use of drones equipped with multispectral sensors to monitor crop health. The drones fly over the fields and take high-resolution photos and data in a variety of light wavelengths.Weaker plants show clear differences in light reflection when compared to healthy ones. 14 They can apply fertilizer, water,or pesticides just where they are needed instead of randomly over their fields.
15 High upfront costs for equipment and software can exclude small-scale farmers, particularly in low-income regions.Data privacy concerns also arise as more farm operations rely on interconnected digital systems. 16 Governments and private sectors must invest in education and rural broadband expansion.Besides, collaborations between tech companies, universities, and farmers’ cooperatives can help speed up innovation.
As climate change intensifies,PA will play a critical role in building a food system capable of adapting to shifting weather patterns. Its ability to turn data into actionable insights may well determine whether we can feed future generations without sacrificing the health of our Earth. 17
In a world where every decision matters, there’s no better time to embrace this revolution.
A.PA is not without its challenges.
B.It functions as a one-size-fits-all approach.
C.To overcome these challenges, joint efforts are needed.
D.Using the information, farmers can make focused decisions.
E.It uses advanced technologies to optimize every aspect of farming.
F.By making data-dependent decisions,farmers can improve productivity.
G.In essence,PA isn’t just about growing more;it’s about growing smarter.
UNIT 6 THE MEDIA(一)
根据第二段中的“If you only look at the bird, you won’t be able to understand how the bird communicates with the tree and how the bird interacts with the water.”以及“Well, because how would you know what’s in a landscape—what’s its story—if there’re no people in it It’s only the people that bring history to it.”
根据第二段中的“This has guided Costa’s work at the rivers of the Angolan Highlands Water Tower:building relationships of trust with local communities.”
根据最后一段中的“I really feel success should be people being able to still manage their own natural heritage and still living according to their traditions”可知,Costa认为应该允许人们按照他们的传统生活,而不是建立国家公园,这表明他对建立国家公园持不赞成的态度。
根据第一段中的“Traditionally, rice farmers in the region flood their fields after harvest to decompose remaining vegetation.”
根据第二段中的“BirdReturns is not like traditional conservation strategies in which organizations buy land and protect it in perpetuity.Instead,it’s a market-based program that pays farmers to flood their fields for a certain amount of time, rather like renting bird habitat, explains Julia Barfield,a program manager for the Nature Conservancy and part of BirdReturns.” 所以perpetuity在这里应是与for a certain amount of time相对的意思,意为“永久”,与C项意思相近。
根据第二段中的“BirdReturns is not like traditional conservation strategies in which organizations buy land and protect it in perpetuity.Instead,it’s a market-based program that pays farmers to flood their fields for a certain amount of time, rather like renting bird habitat, explains Julia Barfield,a program manager for the Nature Conservancy and part of BirdReturns.”
根据文章画线句子上文“A dropped bag of chips disturbed a cave ecosystem in Carlsbad Caverns National Park,New Mexico. This cave is almost cut off from the outside world,so introducing anything foreign can be harmful.”以及“Soon, small animals like crickets and spiders came to eat, spreading the pollution.” 所以 Ashley说“But that can be all it takes.”
根据文章第三段中的“Leaving waste introduces animals to an unnatural diet and changes their behavior with sometimes disastrous results.Bears who taste garbage and become a threat to humans may have to be put down.‘Bears can get used to unnatural food in three weeks,’ says Watts.‘Everyone loses in this case.’”
根据文章最后一段中的“‘It’s just such a hard thing to resist,’says Blye. The risk to sensitive ecosystems isn’t obvious.‘It’s easy to think,oh,there are wildflowers over there.I shouldn’t step on that,’says Blye, but these tiny ecosystems full of microscopic organisms essential to desert life provide many benefits, including reducing the risk of erosion and helping absorb rainfall, and can take hundreds of years to return to its original state.”
