Mainly initiated by senior Avari Brocker, president of the All Minds All Bodies Club, the exhibit focuses on developing a space to raise awareness about visible and invisible disabilities.“As a young child who didn’t know I was disabled and only knew I was struggling,I felt really solitary,” Brocker said.“I felt like I didn’t have a community.”
Discovering her disability less than two years ago at 16,Brocker was inspired to find ways she could advocate immediately after being diagnosed with dyslexia(阅读障碍) and ADHD.Since then, she has become involved in the International Dyslexia Association.“Growing up like that made me realize that spreading awareness of disabilities was part of my purpose in life,” she said.“But everybody needs help and needs a village.Nobody gets anywhere on their own.”
After the exhibit on Friday,March 14,students stayed in their homerooms to watch a video that provided insight towards what the most universal invisible disabilities were at school.ADHD,anxiety disorders, and dyslexia were among the most common according to a study Brocker conducted for her club.
“We wanted to give people a window into what it’s like to be neurodivergent(神经分化),” Brocker said. She reflected on how it felt emotionally tiring to have her struggles emphasized at school, noting that sometimes her disability became more apparent in social situations too,but she’s grateful to friends who supported her through the process, like playing a game all together.Between the exhibit and the video, there’s one thing she hopes for students to take away.“Disability doesn’t prevent a person’s ability to do things,” she said.“It also isn’t a weakness to ask for help.”

Playgrounds have been made significantly safer. There are soft surfaces to play on and all the dangerous play equipment like tall metal slides where children jumped on and off at high speeds have been replaced by much safer plastic swings and climbing structures.
Has removing the risk also removed the fun and the challenge In Amsterdam, the Dutch capital, local officials believe so.That’s why they want to replace boring playgrounds with spaces that allow kids to play with water,climb,sword-fight with sticks, wrestle and fall.
“The inspiration is that children are hardly moving, which is a huge problem,” says Rob Hofland, one of the officials.“They are attracted to a more engaging screen, sitting still for hours. We are learning about how unhealthy it is that the Dutch—the sitting champions of Europe—are so inactive.Things need to change and it starts young.”
Taking risks is children’s nature.Babies start to pull themselves up on furniture even before they can stand.Older children are introduced to a large range of activities that come with potential risk like working with tools.
“Risky play is really a fundamental way for children to figure out the world,” says Mariana Brussoni,a professor at the University of British Columbia.“Engaging in risky play helps them to develop self-confidence,resilience,executive functioning abilities,as well as risk assessment.”
While it is still parents’ job to keep kids safe in playgrounds,it is important to make informed choices before prohibiting risky play. That’s why parents should practice what Brussoni calls the 17-second rule.So instead of telling your child not to climb a tree so high or run so fast, take 17 seconds and observe how your child is doing and what they are able to do.
“This will provide your children with the opportunity to figure out for themselves what’s comfortable and what they can do,” says Brussoni, adding that the most important thing you can do is get out of the way and just let children play.
8.What are the current playgrounds like
A.They are challenging for kids.
B.They are basically free of risks.
C.They are full of funny elements.
D.They are tailored to risk-takers’ nature.
9.Why does Rob Hofland want to bring back risk play
A.To motivate children to become more active.
B.To obey the latest health guidelines in Europe.
C.To train potential champions in the sports field.
D.To inspire children to invent smarter devices.
10.What does Brussoni stress in paragraph 5
A.Requirements for tackling risks.
B.Features of predictable risks.
C.Ways to engage in risky play.
D.Benefits risky play can bring.
11.What does Brussoni advise parents to do
A.Stop observing their adventurous kids.
B.Act as a role model for less brave kids.
C.Allow their kids to explore their potential.
D.Prevent their kids from doing risky sports.

You’re trying to concentrate, but your mind is wandering or you’re easily distracted. What happened to the laser-sharp(激光般锐利的) focus you once enjoyed 12 Over time,it accumulates wear and tear that directly impacts processing. The good news is,this attentional drift can be managed with the following approaches.
Cultivate(培养) a disciplined mindfulness practice. 13 And practicing it has been shown to reshape the brain.Kim Willment,a neuropsychologist with Brigham and Women’s Hospital, recommends sitting still for a few minutes each day, closing your eyes, and focusing on your breathing as well as the sounds and sensations around you.
14 Such exercises are generally designed to improve your attention. However, evidence for their effectiveness has been mixed.“The goal of playing these is not to get better at them, but to get better in the cognitive activities of everyday life,” Willment says.“But there is evidence that a person’s ability to pay attention can be improved by progressively pushing the person to higher levels of performance. So if you reach a certain level of sustained attention, pushing it to the next level can help improve it,and this may translate to everyday life.”
Focus on a healthy lifestyle. This approach centers on two aspects:physical activity and rest. There is a direct link between exercise and cognitive ability, especially attention. When you exercise, you increase the availability of brain chemicals that promote new brain connections and reduce stress. 15 At the same time, you clear out injury-causing proteins.
You have the power to shape your mental sharpness. 16 Starting small ensures you won’t feel overwhelmed. This consistent practice builds cognitive resilience over time.Trust me.Your future focus will thank you for the investment today.
