UNIT 4 INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY(二)
Ⅰ.阅读理解
A(2025四川宜宾三模)
As a scientist,Sara Cox realizes the dangers her beloved birds face.As an artist, she wants to help everyone else understand too.
Sara stops walking and points excitedly over the drystone wall into the field beyond. There, walking among the wandering sheep,is a lapwing, the official bird of the North Pennines.“They are brilliant,” Sara says,a smile across her face as she watches the small bird peck grass.Early spring marks the return of lapwings to Teesdale, where Sara’s family has lived for two decades.
Sara is out for one of her regular walks for inspiration, making drafts and mental notes to help her with her work. She specializes in making life-size bird sculptures out of wire, and some of her sculptures are installed on a nature road around Durham Wildlife Trust’s reserve at Low Barns near Bishop Auckland.
“It’s about drawing attention to certain birds,” she says, adding:“A lot of the birds I’ve made have been endangered or are on the red list.”
“I’m very conscious that the number of the birds coming up here is dropping. The environmental impact of what we do on birds is pretty severe,so anything I can do that makes people feel emotion or interest when they look at a sculpture is good for the environment.”
Sara has science degrees from Aberystwyth,Sheffield and Durham, including one in zoology. But she also has a lifelong love of art and a passion for creating things.Chirpy, one of the birds she made, recently spent a few weeks in London as part of the Royal Society of British Artists’ annual exhibition.

As more and more reptilian(爬行类的) species are threatened by habitat loss, scientists and conservationists say that recognizing reptiles’ capacity for emotion can help pet owners and policymakers alike take better care of them.
When you hear the words “reptilian” or “cold-blooded”,the first thing that comes to mind might be an uncaring boss. That’s because for decades, reptiles have been characterized as cold and emotionless creatures. But scientists agree that they’re misunderstood.
This misbelief largely arises from the concept of the “reptilian brain”.The term refers to the parts of the human brain that we use for survival instincts(直觉).According to this misconception, the human brain evolved over time by adding progressively more complicated structures to this fundamental “reptilian brain”,including the limbic system, which is the source of our emotions. Some researchers long believed that without human-like brain structures, reptiles didn’t have the capacity for emotions at all.
Still, scientists have consistently disproven this theory. One study found that handling lizards caused an increase in their heart rate, indicating an emotional response.Another found that redfooted tortoises exhibited anxiety-like behavior when placed in a new environment.
Even as research continues to build, the stereotypes(刻板印象) around reptilian emotions remain. Some research has revealed part of the reason. In 2021,researchers found that lizards give out chemicals to communicate with each other, meaning they’re much harder to read than mammals.Humans are more likely to show sympathy for animals that share physical and emotional characteristics with us,which is why many people might have a deeper understanding of dogs and cats than of turtles, for instance.
Our tendency to dismiss reptiles isn’t just psychological—it’s impacted the level of habitat protections they’re afforded.Apodaca,a conservationist from Amphibian and Reptile Conservancy, says he’s noticed gaps in species recovery funding for reptiles vs.mammals, birds, and fish. However,he’s also noticed a huge increase in awareness of reptiles’ conservation needs—a development which could prove crucial to fighting habitat loss in the coming years.
