UNIT 6 THE ADMIRABLE(一)
Ⅰ.阅读理解
A(2025湖南永州二模)
From the age of 6,Samirah Horton was bullied by her classmates for the things that made her different—her size and her sharp voice.Rather than giving up,Horton decided to pick up a microphone and make sure other children knew they weren’t alone.“I didn’t want other kids to go through that experience,” says Horton,“especially at a very young age.” Now,alongside attending eighth grade classes, she’s also building an anti-bullying platform to reach students across the country.
For as long as Horton can remember, she’s felt a special connection with music. She remembers her mother always having the radio on,and her father teaching her how to deejay(主持音乐节目).Music gives her unlimited power to do the duty.“It’s music that fuels my mission, allowing me to spread this important message,” she says. Now as the Kid DJ for her hometown team, you can hear anything from the hip-hop classics to songs of her own, including the anti-bullying song “No You Won’t Bully Me”.
Her message has reached beyond the DJ set.At 8,Horton turned one of her songs into a 26-page picture book, which has reached thousands of people across America. In the book, she references the over 160,000 students who miss school daily for fear of being bullied.
Horton isn’t sure exactly what the future holds, but for now, she’s positive about leading her school’s student government.“I don’t know exactly what I’ll be doing, but I know I’ll be making a positive influence on the world,” she says. She’s already on her way,but her biggest achievement in her own eyes is persuading others not to doubt themselves along the way.“Don’t care what anybody tells you,” she says.“You are never too young to make a change.”

Do songs share certain universal features across cultures If you hear a song in an unfamiliar language or rhythm, can you still grasp its social purpose
A 2019 study in Science demonstrated that listeners from 60 countries could reliably identify whether 14-second song clips were used for dancing, comforting infants,or healing rituals—even when the songs came from entirely unfamiliar cultures. This finding connects with my field experiences listening to Haitian songs.
Harold Courlander,a folklorist who worked in Haiti throughout the 1930s,says,“Music combines practically all aspects of Haitian existence.Farmers often perform their tasks with drumming in the background. And in the temple, the iron hoe in the fields often serves as a musical instrument.”
Actually,I regularly heard families and friends here use songs in order to heal the soul,to release social stress,to comfort noisy babies, and to relax their bodies. For example, professional singers like Nanis memorized hundreds upon hundreds of songs over the course of their lives, using them to comfort their grandchildren and playfully lighten the mood.
Struggling to learn and recognize the new sounds, words, ideas, and body language around me was a day-to-day reality—a fun and challenging one.For months,I worked to listen to each word as Nanis sang. When others in town heard Nanis sing, the message of these songs could respond to their lives, bringing them back to life moments when these songs had been sung before. It could also throw them forward into imagined futures where they might be sung again.
However,I still remember that when I heard Nanis’s M pap di anyen Ayida for the first time,I didn’t make the mistake of thinking that I heard the song in the same way that a resident would. The song, impactful as it was,was interpreted through my own social background and musical experience.
5.What does the study of songs reveal at the beginning of the text
A.People’s great appreciation of music.
B.People’s common understanding of songs.
C.People’s changeable interpretations of songs
D.People’s preference for specific music types.
6.What do Harold Courlander’s words imply about music
A.It is closely tied to life.
B.It is a tool for socializing.
C.It is mainly for entertainment.
D.It is the medium of agriculture.
7.What may contribute to the popularity of Nanis’s songs in town
A.Their appeal to diverse age groups.
B.Their presentation of local traditions.
C.Their catchy rhythms and cultural themes.
D.Their emotional connection to people’s lives.
8.Which of the following is the best title for the text
A.Music’s Dual Nature:Global Functions,Cultural Roots
B.Music as a Bridge:Universal Language Across Cultures
C.Haitian Music:Mirroring Social Life and Tradition
D.Science Explains Music’s Role in Human Connection
C(2025山东菏泽模拟)
The teacher starts with the basics:how to thread a needle. Then, over the course of the next 30 minutes, she shows the students a few different stitches(针法),along with how to mend a torn shirt. The sewing class is part of a free,one-day course at Austin Community College(ACC) called “Adulting 101”.The students range in age from their late teens to mid-40s.
ACC has been running such programmes for six years. The workshops are designed to help people “successfully navigate adulthood”,even those who, legally and practically, have been navigating it for quite some time. The topics vary from basic—how to dress appropriately for a job interview—to advanced, such as how to file income taxes.
The rise in need for adulting classes reflects,in part, the changing nature of childhood and adolescence, which have grown more digital and less physical.American teens spend up to nine hours each day on screens.TikTok and YouTube do offer handy tutorials on all manner of housework, but most young users of these platforms are more interested in dancing than dishwashers.
Keith Hayward,a professor of the University of Copenhagen, argued that there has been a generational shift and that young people are less mature than their ancestors were at the same age. They are escaping from responsibilities such as marriage, home owning and child-raising because “adulting is hard”,as one of his students put it.He adds that young people today are also less interested in what their elder try to offer.“If parents are not providing advice on life’s many essential tasks, you’re left with these classes picking up what you should have gained.”
Many will see adulting classes as proof of youngsters’ delayed development. But spoiled children do not acknowledge the gaps in their knowledge and try to fill them.Only a grown-up would willingly spend precious free time doing something as dull as learning how to mend a shirt.
9.Why is the “Adulting 101” course opened
A.To teach digital skills.
B.To make adult life smooth.
C.To train experienced tailors.
D.To advance academic level.
10.What does the rise in need for adulting classes reflect about young people today
A.Their nature of adulting.
B.Their addiction to screens.
C.Their interest in housework.
D.Their love for tutorials.
11.What is Keith Hayward’s attitude towards adulting classes
A.Doubtful. B.Negative.
C.Neutral. D.Positive.
12.What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A.Adulting classes should be started earlier.
B.Practical skills are a sign of becoming mature.
C.Adulting classes are very dull for grown-ups.
D.Young people have a generation gap with their parents.

Online shopping often involves endless options and dizzying discounts.A single search for running shoes can produce hundreds of results. 13 What if there is a tool capable of hunting for the best prices and making sure your purchases arrive on time
The new innovation in artificial intelligence is AI agents. They are capable of autonomous reasoning and multistep problem-solving. 14 Imagine this:You remind AI to find a winter coat under $200 that’s highly rated and will arrive by Sunday. In seconds,it scans websites, compares prices, checks reviews, confirms availability and places the order, all while you go about your day.
Unlike traditional recommendation engines,AI agents learn your preferences and handle tasks autonomously. The agents are built with machine learning and natural language processing. They can learn from their interactions with users and become smarter.Looking ahead,AI agents are likely to not only master personal shopping needs but also negotiate directly with corporate AI systems. 15
Consumers today are focused on value, looking for deals and comparing prices across platforms. 16 But can AI truly learn your preferences A recent study using the GPT-4.0 model achieved 85% accuracy in copying the thoughts and behaviors of over 1,000 people after they interacted with the AI for just two hours, which is really a breakthrough.
17 AI systems require extensive access to personal data, shopping history and financial information. This level of access increases the risk of misuse and unauthorized sharing.
A.They can make purchases without being instructed.
B.However, there’s also a risk of being addicted to AI agents.
C.The process results in tired eyes and decision-making challenges.
D.They not only suggest what you might like, but also act on your behalf.
E.Having an assistant perform these tasks could be a remarkable time saver.
F.While offering significant benefits,AI agents also raise critical privacy concerns.
G.They will be able to book tailored experiences and handle payments across platforms.
