UNIT 7 ART(一)
A(2025河南五市二模)
My father’s thrift(节俭) philosophy shaped my youth.Unlike peers receiving pocket money,I never got a penny—not from cruelty, but to build self-reliance.Each morning,he’d note,“Mrs.Wilson needs her garden weeded;Mr.Carter requires help sorting bottles.” I earned coins through seasonal work in the neighborhood:sweeping leaves, shoveling snow and babysitting.
Savings filled the tin under my bed,its weight showing my growing pride.Though he occasionally borrowed for emergencies(a flat tire or a medical bill),repayment was exact and timely. When I lost two months’ earnings in a failed lemonade business, his only words were,“Live and learn.” At twelve,I considered this cruel;at thirty,I value its wisdom—true lessons grow through doing.
Modern thrift education focuses on saving, but ignores its key point:earning.Father believed “earned coins teach value;given coins generate greed”—a truth wealthy families overlook while advocating thrift.By delivering papers at dawn and mowing lawns at dusk,I learned that true thrift is a triad(三位一体)—earn through labor, save with intention, spend with care. This trio, unteachable in classrooms, roots in blistered(满是水泡的) hands and difficult situations.
Locally, supermarkets throw outdated bread(still eatable) as shelters beg for donations.Witnessing global contrasts inspires my resolve:1.3 billion tons of food go bad annually—enough to feed all the hungry—while 800 million starve. This phenomenon fuels my Food Rescue project—redirecting bakery remains to food banks and training youth to reuse deserted furniture for schools.Through such acts, thrift becomes social justice. As Father said,“Earning teaches respect for resources.” In our wasteful era, thrift transforms from personal discipline to collective duty.

A native language,or “mother tongue”,is the first language a person learns and is usually a key part of their identity, allowing them to connect with their family and friends and to accept their culture. But is it possible to forget your native language—for example,if you move to another country and start speaking a different dialect or language
Linguists(语言学家) call this phenomenon “native language attrition”,or the process in which you become less competent in your native language over time—perhaps because you’re not using it as much.
Experts say it’s possible to forget your native language in certain circumstances, particularly in the case of young children moving to a different country or region where a different language is spoken.A prime example of this is young children who are adopted by families who live in other countries.
“However, the older you are when you move, the greater the likelihood that you’ll keep your native language because you’ll have established a much more solid grounding in it,” said Laura Dominguez,a professor of linguistics at the University of Southampton in the UK.“Therefore,it’s improbable that a teenager or an adult will forget whole chunks(语块) of language, like how to construct the past tense,” she said.
In fact, studies show that people are less likely to forget their native language after they reach their teenage years. This is probably because beyond this age,our brains mature and become less flexible and receptive to change.“That said, the part of your native language that is most likely to be lost even after short periods is vocabulary,” Dominguez said.“An area of language that is slightly more resistant to being forgotten than vocabulary is grammar,” she added.
5.What is the function of the first paragraph
A.To introduce the topic of the text.
B.To define what a native language is.
C.To offer some background knowledge.
D.To emphasize the importance of culture.
6.What does the underlined word “attrition” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A.Improvement. B.Loss.
C.Barrier. D.Development.
7.Why do adults rarely forget their native language completely, according to Dominguez
A.They have a stronger sense of identity.
B.Their brains are more flexible to change.
C.Their foundation in their native language is more solid.
D.They are more exposed to their native language in daily life.
8.Which of the following would be the best title for the text
A.The Power of Language
B.The Importance of Mother Tongue
C.Can You Forget Your Native Language
D.How Do You Maintain Your Native Language

There is a common scene in crime TV shows:A suspect is sweating nervously as the detectives use a polygraph(测谎仪) test to decide whether the suspect is innocent or guilty. The polygraph, more popularly called “lie detector”,is designed to catch people in a lie.
The polygraph measures the sweat, pulse rate, and other physiological(生理的) factors of the tested person. In this way, polygraph tests are accurate at measuring a person’s nervous excitement. When a person is undergoing a polygraph test, the administrator begins by asking two types of control questions:questions which the person is expected to answer truthfully and questions which the person is expected to answer with a lie(often the administrator will ask the subject to write down a number and then ask “Did you write 1 ” “Did you write 2 ” to solicit the desired responses).
This way, when the administrator asks more relevant questions later on,the subject’s physiological reactions are compared with the reactions to the control questions to determine whether the subject is telling lies.
However,it’s possible for people to react in an excited way when answering questions truthfully. If the control questions don’t accurately show the person’s reaction,it is harder for the administrator to decide whether the person is lying when answering relevant questions. So,while the polygraph might be effective at measuring physiological factors associated with being nervous, that doesn’t necessarily mean it can always distinguish a person lying from a person telling the truth.
Knowing it’s possible to achieve inaccurate results of a polygraph test makes the polygraph fairly unreliable on its own.In addition, the polygraph measures physiological factors associated not just with lying but with being nervous—a common feeling one might experience when being interrogated(审问).That is why in recent years police officers have turned away from fully relying on polygraph tests as definitive proof of one’s innocence or guilt.Overall,it’s important to consider the chance for error when examining the results of polygraph tests, but it’s possible to catch a person lying.
9.What is the function of the control questions in polygraph tests
A.To supply guidance for operation.
B.To provide a basis for comparison.
C.To define the primary goal of evaluation.
D.To establish a process for measurement.
10.What does the underlined word “solicit” mean in paragraph 2
A.Seek. B.Analyze.
C.Combine. D.Control.
11.What is the main reason for a polygraph’s ineffectiveness
A.Testing procedures fail to meet strict standards.
B.Administrators’ competence falls short of adequacy.
C.Nervous system responses vary from person to person.
D.Control question designs demonstrate structural limitations.
12.What can we learn about the polygraph test in the last paragraph
A.It doesn’t contain a grain of truth.
B.Its error rate stays at a high level.
C.It has fallen into disuse nowadays.
D.Its results need further assessment.

Commitment(承诺) is the firm determination to pursue a path despite obstacles or uncertainty. In a world of distractions, staying committed often feels challenging, yet it unlocks significant growth and mitment alone doesn’t guarantee success. 13 It transforms intentions into achievements, whether through daily habits like early morning runs, professional projects,or supporting loved ones.
At its core, commitment is a silent promise that drives meaningful pursuits.By dedicating ourselves to goals,we uncover hidden strengths and turn ordinary efforts into extraordinary outcomes. In relationships, personal growth or careers, commitment bridges ambitions and fulfillment, fostering resilience(韧性) to overcome setbacks.
Embracing the unknown is central to commitment.Exploring new and unknown areas—like pursuing a different or unusual path—combines excitement and fear. 14 Committing without knowing the outcome builds resilience, preparing us for life’s unpredictability.Every step forward strengthens resolve, much like innovators who dared to explore the unfamiliar.
15 Break goals into actionable steps, match tasks with long-term visions and celebrate small wins to keep motivation going.Consistency matters:small daily efforts add up over time.Building strong habits helps you handle challenges, while reflecting on progress creates a cycle of improvement—success drives more commitment.
Belief in oneself can change things. 16 Think about how a motivational speaker’s strong belief in their message can inspire millions. This belief comes from constant self-improvement and having a clear goal.By developing this mindset, challenges turn into stepping stones and passions become lifelong pursuits.
Ultimately, commitment is a lifestyle. It shapes character, guiding us through challenges and victories. Each step strengthens the belief that anything is possible with hard work. 17
A.However,without it,success is impossible.
B.It discourages us from embracing challenges.
C.To stay committed, practical strategies are key.
D.Yet uncertainty holds opportunities for discovery.
E.It requires consistent action, even when progress feels slow.
F.It can fuel passion during doubt, inspiring us to pursue ambitious goals.
G.Embrace the journey courageously, letting commitment be your compass.
UNIT 7 ART(一)
根据第二段中的“At twelve,I considered this cruel;at thirty,I value its wisdom — true lessons grow through doing.”
根据第三段中的“Father believed ‘earned coins teach value;given coins generate greed’...earn through labor,save with intention,spend with care.”
根据第四段中的“Locally, supermarkets throw outdated bread(still eatable) as shelters beg for donations...Through such acts, thrift becomes social justice.”
根据画线词的下文“or the process in which you become less competent in your native language over time—perhaps because you’re not using it as much”可知,下文解释attrition是母语能力逐渐下降的过程,因此attrition最贴近“丧失,失去”的意思。
根据第四段中Laura Dominguez所说的话“However, the older you are when you move, the greater the likelihood that you’ll keep your native language because you’ll have established a much more solid grounding in it”可知,Dominguez认为成年人很少完全忘记母语是因为他们的母语基础更牢固。
根据第二段中的“When a person is undergoing a polygraph test, the administrator begins by asking two types of control questions”和第三段可知,使用测谎仪测量回答“准绳问题”的时间的作用是提供比较的参照。
根据画线词前的“questions which the person is expected to answer with a lie(often the administrator will ask the subject to write down a number and then ask ‘Did you write 1 ’ ‘Did you write 2 ’ to solicit the desired responses)”可知,第二种问题是希望被测者撒谎回答的问题,所以管理者让被测者写一个数字然后问问题,是希望得到期望的反应,即寻求被测者撒谎的反应,solicit意为“寻求”,故选A项。
根据最后一段中的“Overall,it’s important to consider the chance for error when examining the results of polygraph tests, but it’s possible to catch a person lying.”
13.A 根据前文“Commitment alone doesn’t guarantee success.” 而后文“It transforms intentions into achievements, whether through daily habits like early morning runs, professional projects,or supporting loved ones.”
14.D 根据前文“Exploring new and unknown areas—like pursuing a different or unusual path—combines excitement and fear.”以及后文“Committing without knowing the outcome builds resilience, preparing us for life’s unpredictability.” D项符合语境,uncertainty对应前文的unknown areas和without knowing the outcome, opportunities for discovery 与后文的preparing us for life’s unpredictability相呼应,体现了不确定性带来的积极方面的影响。
15.C 根据后文“Break goals into actionable steps...success drives more commitment.”
16.F 根据前文“Belief in oneself can change things.”以及后文“Think about how a motivational...and passions become lifelong pursuits.” F项符合语境,It 指代前文的Belief in oneself, fuel passion和inspiring us to pursue ambitious goals与后文的激励他人、将挑战变为垫脚石等内容相呼应,进一步阐述了相信自己的信念的作用。
17.G 根据前文“Ultimately, commitment is a lifestyle. It shapes character, guiding us through challenges and victories. Each step strengthens the belief that anything is possible with hard work.”
