Losing crops is never good, especially when it’s your livelihood. Julio knows this very well — especially after pests (害虫) got hold of his melon farm. Seeing the damage to his crops made him feel desperate. But thankfully, he’s not alone. Since becoming a part of Convoy of Hope’s agriculture program, Julio is receiving the support he needs and learning more about his own land.
“Convoy of Hope has been a great support during this time. Through these training sessions, I’ve learned new techniques for fertilization, care, and nutrition of the melon crop, which has been of great assistance,” he said.
And he doesn’t want to keep what he’s learned to himself. Julio said, “Sharing ideas and knowledge with my fellow producers is important to me because cooperating with others helps us prosper together and be successful in production.”
Farmers like Julio are growing their trade, and the positive effects are multiplying.
“My life has improved significantly as I now have greater knowledge and support to produce and enhance the quality of my crops,” Julio said. “This has allowed me to expand the area of cultivation (耕种) and increase my income to meet my needs. …The best part has been seeing an increase in production. Previously, I cultivated less than one hectare (公顷), and now I plant a full hectare. This has been a blessing for me.”
But Julio isn’t stopping here. “I would like to own my own land instead of renting, so I can work on my own and generate prosperity for my family and fellow producers.”
Thanks to Convoy of Hope’s supporters, farmers such as Julio can go through difficult situations and create solutions for the future.
4.What problem did Julio face at the beginning of the story
A. A lack of farming tools.
B. Poor market demand for melons.
C. Rising land rental costs.
D. Damage to his crops by pests.
5.Why does Julio believe sharing knowledge with other farmers is important
A. It helps him gain wide recognition.
B. It allows everyone to succeed together.
C. It reduces the need for outside support.
D. It improves competition among farmers.
6.What can be inferred from paragraphs 4 and 5
A. Julio’s income increase came before his production rose.
B. Support and training helped Julio make better use of his land.
C. Julio expanded his farmland mainly through renting additional fields.
D. Julio focused more on improving crop quality than on increasing output.
7.What does Julio plan to do in the future
A. Work abroad. B. Leave farming.
C. Buy his own land. D. Focus on training others.
There's a perception that today's youth are extremely narcissistic(自恋的)-fame- obsessed, selfish and vain. In fact, studies show this is a common view of young people, regardless of the times we live in. But are young people really more narcissistic New research reveals that, as people age, they do tend to become less narcissistic.
Narcissism is a multi- dimensional personality, which captures features beyond pride and self- absorption. Emerging research suggests there are three dimensions of narcissism: agentic, antagonistic and neurotic. Agentic narcissism involves the need for admiration and feelings of superiority. Antagonistic narcissism is characterized by the lack of empathy towards other people. Finally, neurotic narcissism refers to being sensitive and having difficulties regulating one's emotions.
In order to fully understand narcissism, the new study looked at all the three features. They analyzed data from 51 longitudinal studies (meaning studies which follow participants over time), all of which measured how participants' levels of narcissism changed.
To select the studies, the team used the American Psychiatric Association (APA) PsychInfo database of papers, searching for terms including “narcissism” and “narcissistic”. Each article was reviewed by two coders. The coders independently selected the studies based on details including sample size, gender ratio, and the country in which the sample was collected.
This procedure generated a dataset which comprised of 37,247 participants(52% female)ranging from ages 8 to 77 years.
The researchers found that all three dimensions of narcissism declined across the life span. There was a small decline for agentic narcissism and a moderate reduction for antagonistic and neurotic narcissism. The researchers also found that people's narcissism relative to that of their peers remained consistent over the life span. In other words, people who were more narcissistic than average as children remained more narcissistic than average as adults.
8.What is the finding of the new study
A. Old people are less narcissistic than they were young.
B. Young women are more narcissistic than young men.
C. People are more narcissistic these days than in the past.
D. Young people are becoming more narcissistic than before.
9.Which behavior might be narcissistic

There are close to 7, 000 languages spoken on Earth. However, it’s estimated that by the end of this century, up to 50% of them may be lost.
It’s commonly thought that majority languages tend to be valued for being useful and for promoting progress, while minority languages are seen as barriers to progress, and the value placed on them is seen mainly as sentimental (感情用事的). But is sentimentality really the only motivation for preserving language diversity
Speakers of endangered languages often live in remote areas with unique landform. It is quite common for these languages to distinguish between hundreds more types of plants and animals than those known to modern science. For example, in Southeast Asia, some tribes have discovered the medicinal properties of over sixty-five hundred plant species. This has led to many of landmark achievements in medicine.
It was once believed that the limits of one’s language defined the limits of one’s thought. This theory, called the Sapir-Wharf hypothesis (假说), has been largely rejected in favor of the improved version, which assumes that the language we speak does not set the limits of our thoughts, but it does direct our focus in certain ways. For example, English is a tense-based language. It’s nearly impossible to talk about doing something without specifying the time—i. e. I went to the party(past), I’m going to the party(present), or I’ll go to the party (future). This differs from Chinese, where it’s perfectly reasonable to say, “I go to the party” without defining the “when”. Thus, part of the richness of language is that it allows us to organize the world in so many unique ways.
Some languages categorize the world in ways so different from our own that they are difficult to conceptualize (概念化). The United States employed native Navajo speakers to create a system of message coding during the Second World War. The Japanese were never able to break it, and the “code talkers” are often cited today as having helped decide the outcome of the war.
As we’ve already seen, minority languages are valuable for many practical reasons. In conclusion, I’d say the short answer is yes—dying languages are certainly worth saving!
12.What do people tend to think of minority languages

B.We don’t have to rely on modern medicine.
C.We can acquire a broad knowledge of nature.

14.Why does the author mention the Second World War
A.To correct the Sapir-Wharf hypothesis.
B.To prove the value of minority languages.

D.To explain ways to conserve some languages.

Tenth grade in school was a time we all enjoyed with our friends and teachers.
One day, our class teacher came in with a girl. She was tall and had dark skin. The teacher introduced her as Navya and she was going to, be in our class that year. My friends looked at me and saw a smile come across my face. They knew I loved making friends, and I was willing to help anyone in any way.
I found Navya to be a very quiet girl — she always liked to stay alone. We would want her to join us but she would never leave her seat. I often wondered why this girl loved being alone in her place. During the break, we would sit with Navya and introduce ourselves to her. I would try my best to make her say anything she wished, but she never spoke anything to anyone. I hardly saw her smile, and I often wondered if there was a smile behind the mask.
The annual day was approaching, and our teachers were grouping us into dance, singing and plays. We all were excited as we all could skip our classes and go for our annual practice. Our teacher asked Navya if she would like to participate in any of the events on the annual day, but she would look down and shake her head, as if she were dumb (哑的). She never came forward to participate in any competitions.
The day finally arrived, and we were all excited. Then our play was about to begin and we found out that our main actor Shruti had an accident and would not be able to perform in the play. We were all sad and tense as the parents were waiting for the play to start.

It seemed as if she had removed the mask she wore for the first time. I felt that she was very happy to have proved herself worthy of something. From then on, Navya was part of us and she enjoyed being with us. The world is much better with smiling faces, so remove the mask which is keeping you away from people and go out into the world with true smiles.
