一、阅读理解
Many unique caves in the world are found on the shores of oceans and lakes. They are always there to attract visitors across the globe.
Sea Lion Caves
Found on the Oregon Coast, it’s well-known as the only mainland breeding ground (繁殖地) of the Steller sea lion, a near-threatened species. It’s also the longest sea cave in North America, measuring1,315 feet long. Most of the cave is at sea level and is flooded with water at high tide. One section of the cave, sitting 50 feet higher, serves as a platform to view the creatures’ habitat.
Apostle Islands Sea Caves
Wisconsin’s Apostle Islands Sea Caves are sandstone caves on the shores of Lake Superior. The caves are accessible by boat in summer, but seeing the caves during winter has become a popular, if weather-dependent, alternative. When Lake Superior freezes, the ice is sometimes thick enough to allow hikers to walk across the lake and explore the caves.
Great Blue Hole
Located off the coast of Belize, it’s a vertical cave that’s entirely underwater. It measures 984 feet in diameter and 410 feet deep. With its beautiful, clear water and a variety of wild marine life residing in its depths, the Great Blue Hole is most famous as a scuba-diving destination. Although the Great Blue Hole is one of the most spectacular, it’s not the world’s only blue hole.
Painted Cave
The Painted Cave, located on California’s Santa Cruz Island, is an expansive sea cave known for the colorful rocks, lichen and algae found on its walls. After the Sea Lion Caves, it’s the second-longest sea cave in North America, at 1,227 feet long. This summer, Fang Zhuren, a 50-year-old woman from a rural village in Shandong Province with only a middle school education, burst onto the country’s stand-up (单口的) comedy scene as the dark horse of the hit online competition, The King of Stand-Up Comedy Season Two.
Two years ago, she felt trapped by endless housework and an unhappy marriage. She was desperate for an escape. The turning point came in March 2023 at a live show of a female comedian where, during audience interaction, Fang humorously introduced herself as “the director of the information center” in her village. Fang’s quick-witted, humorous answer stole the show, and the clip later went viral online.

Tan Xiaobong, producer of the show, admits she initially had doubts when first encountering Fang’s audition tape. When they met in person, all her doubts vanished. Her raw authenticity and strong ability to consistently transform life experiences into comedy made casting her an undeniable choice.
Raised in poverty, Fang left school early for factory work. After marriage, she carried heavy domestic duties. Discovering comedy through podcasts opened a new world. After initial struggles at open mics, she found her voice. “Stand-up soon became my edy helped me make peace with life,” Fang edy became both emotional relief and a path to independence. In a world that is coping with a growing population, there is a mounting need to develop and manage systems, products, and processes that boost productivity but with minimal environmental impact. To design a product or process well, you first need to deeply understand how a substance behaves. This is exactly where chemical engineers play a key role.
“Chemical Engineering is all about changing raw materials into useful products you use every day in a safe and cost-effective way, such as using fossil oil in making petrol, plastics and synthetic fibres and so on,” said Professor Tey Beng Ti from the School of Engineering at Monash University Malaysia.
A member of Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE), Tey has published more than 90 papers in leading scientific journals. “Chemical engineers basically understand how to alter the chemical or biochemical state of a substance, to create everything from face creams to fuels,” he said. The belief spurred Tey to launch a research project eight years ago which has resulted in a discovery on how to simplify the production process of therapeutic (治疗的) protein such as virus-like particles.
He said the current flu vaccine is produced in fertilised chicken eggs, but it has limitations. Firstly, the virus yield is very low, and the egg supply could be affected by avian flu pandemics and so on. Apart from that, people allergic to eggs cannot receive such vaccines. In his research, Tey sought to purify virus-like particles via a chromatographic (色谱法的) purification process. This new method delivered up to 17 times higher product yield and cut processing time by 6-10 times, compared to conventional approaches. So far, they have filed 9 patents in Malaysia and published more than 50 articles in leading international scientific journals.
Tey said the work of a chemical engineer could be extremely diverse, but it would always be relevant. “Whether you focus on developing future energy solutions, controlling pollution or protecting our environment, your future as a chemical engineer is bright.”
8.Why are chemical engineers key to products
A. They master the characteristics of substances.
B. They minimize environment impact.
C. They end fossil-fuel use.
D. They cut costs.
9.Which can replace the underlined word “spurred” in paragraph 3
A. Trained. B. Inspired. C. Expected. D. Discouraged.
10.What can we know about Tey’s chromatographic purification process
A. It has replaced the conventional method.
B. It requires more raw materials.
C. It is more efficient and productive.
D. It has been used in global markets.
11.What is mainly talked about in the last paragraph
A. The specific steps to become a chemical engineer.
B. Prof. Tey’s suggestions on environmental pollution.
C. The challenges chemical engineers face in the future.
D. The promising career prospects of chemical engineers.
A March 2023 report from Goldman Sachs estimated that AI capable of content generation could do a quarter of all the work currently done by humans. Across the European Union and US, the report further notes, 300 million jobs could be lost to automation. And that could be awful, says Martin Ford, author of Rule of the Robots: Hot Artificial Intelligence Will Transform Everything.
“It’s not just that this would happen to individuals, but it could be pretty systemic.” he says. “It could happen to a lot of people, potentially quite suddenly, potentially all at the same time. And that has implications not just for those individuals, but for the whole economy. ”
Thankfully, it’s not all bad news. The experts issue their warnings with a caveat (限制性条款): there are still things Al isn’t capable of—tasks that involve distinctly human qualities, like emotional intelligence and outside-the-box thinking. And moving into roles that centre those skills could help lessen the chances of being replaced.
“I think there are generally three categories that are going to be relatively insulated (隔离) in the foreseeable future,” says Ford. “The first would be jobs that are genuinely creative: you’re not doing formulaic work or just rearranging things, but you’re genuinely coming up with new ideas and building something new.”
“The second insulated category, he continues, is jobs that require sophisticated (老练的) interpersonal relationships. He points to nurses, secretarial clerks and investigative journalists. These are jobs, he says, “where you need a very deep understanding of people.”
The third safe zone, says Ford, “are jobs that really require lots of mobility and dexterity (灵巧) and problem-solving ability in unpredictable environments”. Many trade jobs—think electricians, plumbers, welders and the like—fall under this umbrella, he adds. “They are probably the hardest of anything to automate.”
In short, seeking roles in dynamic, shifting environments that include unpredictable tasks is good way to stave off job loss to AI. At least, for a while.
12.According to Martin Ford what’s his attitude towards AI
A. Favorable. B. Pessimistic. C. Neutral. D. Dismissive.
13.Why did the writer mention the caveat in Paragraph 3
A. To introduce the main topic. B. To clarify a concept.
C. To present a fact. D. To make a comparison.
14.According to the passage, in the future which job is more likely to be replaced by Al
A. A business consultant. B. A craftsman.
C. A typist. D. A tourist guide.
15.What’s the best title for the text
A. The robots really are coming for some jobs.
B. The jobs AI won’t take yet.
C. AI will transform working mode.
D. The jobs people can do in the future.

34.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When I was seven years old, my family moved from Mexico to America. In Mexico, I was a cheerful girl who loved making people laugh with my jokes and inventing funny games to play with my friends. However, when I arrived in America, I found it hard to fit in, and I became quieter.
We lived in a small house with a modest yard where we grew vegetables--- my responsibility. While I took pride in watching them grow, there were times when I dreamed of having a beautiful garden like my schoolmate Luella's, with its delicate tulips ( 郁金香). Although Luella lived in the same neighborhood as me, we barely knew each other. It was after a tornado that everything changed.
The tornado struck on a Sunday afternoon. The gentle breeze transformed into a strong wind, and thick gray clouds filled the sky. Gradually, the tornado took shape, starting as a thin rope and growing into a large black funnel( 漏斗). My entire family gathered in the bathroom, seeking shelter from the storm. Terrified, I sat close to my mom, knees in my chest. After the storm had passed , our worries and fears were replaced by relief that we were unharmed and that our house had remained undamaged.
As I stepped outside , I witnessed the extent of the damage the tornado had caused to our neighborhood. Across the street, a tall tree had fallen, crushing Luella's garden in front of her yellow house. We hurried over to check on it. Fortunately, her family seemed to be away at the time , and no one was injured. However, her once- beautiful garden was in ruins, with the fallen tree destroying the tulips and debris ( 碎片) spread everywhere. I could only imagine how heartbroken they must feel seeing this.
Then my mom's usual words rang in my ear,“ It is more blessed to give than to receive,” and my family started to think about how we could help.
