Growing up in a chocolate factory sounds like a dream, but for 12-year-old Brynn O’Neill, it’s pretty close to
real life. Brynn was 7 years old when their parents bought Chamberlain’s Chocolate Factory near Atlanta, Georgia.
That year, Brynn’s mother and father gave Brynn the task of setting biscuits on a machine that coats candies,
cookies and other treats with chocolate.
“Being in a chocolate shop family, I always have a great answer for the ‘tell us something interesting’
icebreaker questions at school,” Brynn says.
The holiday season for candy makers begins about October 1. “My shop tasks this season are skewering (串起)
strawberries — so many strawberries — and putting chocolates in boxes,” Brynn says.
Two years ago, Brynn realized that dipping (浸) strawberries into chocolate provided a powerful distraction
from the loss of his father. Brynn’s father died suddenly, and Brynn, his older sisters and their mother had to work
together through the sadness and figure out the complicated machines that he had run.
“My mom and sisters and I are really close,” Brynn says. “The chocolate shop brought us together after Dad
died.”
One of their favorite tasks over the past five years has been helping with chocolate parties at Chamberlain’s.
Girl Scouts can earn badges at the shop, and people have birthday parties there. Brynn loves helping groups that
come to make chocolate bars.
When not in the store or doing schoolwork, Brynn plays competitive volleyball and online games. With the
holiday season kicking off, however, Brynn has little time for games until the end of the year. Orders come from
across the country. Brynn and his older sisters join their mother and employees to fill them.
4. What did 7-year-old Brynn often do
A. He dreamed of owning a chocolate factory.
B. He visited a chocolate factory near his home.
C. He bought cookies from a local chocolate factory.
D. He helped do some work in the family chocolate factory.
5. What did Brynn do to get over his sadness about the loss of his dad
A. He opened a chocolate shop.
B. He named a new candy after his dad.
C. He removed the machines his dad had run.
D. He focused on working in the family chocolate shop.
6. Which of the following best describes Brynn’s life during the holiday season
A. Peaceful. B. Busy. C. Lonely. D. Exciting.
7. What can we learn about Brynn from the text
A. He has a sweet job. B. He does a lot of sport.
C. He is good at telling stories. D. He seldom plays online games.

For those one or two of you in the audience who grew up watching Swiss Family Robinson, a new resort (度
假胜地) in Tennessee will jump to the top of your destination list. 130 treehouses will be built over the next few
years in the woods near Great Smoky Mountains National Park, representing the largest treehouse resort on earth.
Called Sanctuary Treehouse Resort, the idea came when an intergenerational, entrepreneurial Tennessee
family called the Jensens decided that since their children were all grown up, they would rent out their childhood
tree fort (堡垒) as such things were becoming popular camping opportunities. Once they saw how popular it was
becoming, they decided to turn 40 acres into the largest collection of treehouses and forts in the world.
The Jensens are working with a mountain-modern architecture company called MossCreek Designs to follow
their dreams. The first group of apartments will be ready and available for rental by the end of summer 2022, and
each year will feature a few more until the resort is finally completed. For big meetings, sections of the forest floor
will be turned into woods filled with lights and amenities for such group activities.
“We are building a unique resort like no other where guests can stay and play and have a one-of-a-kind
experience,” said Amanda and Brian Jensen, the heads of the family. “We hope to provide our guests with lasting
memories, and breathtaking views, leaving them with a desire to come back and stay with us year after year.”
If this wasn’t an excellent enough idea for a vacation with the kids, every spring in the Great Smoky
Mountains, a lottery (抽奖) is held to win one of 800 parking passes to watch one of the largest gatherings of
fireflies in the country. Staying at a treehouse apartment in a forest and watching a “life-changing” natural light
show really does sound like the experience of a lifetime.
8. What gave the Jensens the idea to build a treehouse resort
A. Children’s requirements.
B. Their love of Swiss Family Robinson.
C. The admiration of the childhood tree fort.
D. People’s desire to stay at national parks.
9 What does the underlined word “amenities” in paragraph 3 mean
A Facilities. B. Foods. C. Drinks. D. Services.
10. What can we infer from Amanda and Brian Jensen’s words
A. The resort is unattractive to kids.
B. The resort is quite worth visiting.
C. The resort has welcomed many returning visitors.
D. The resort is based on their childhood memories.
11. What is the text mainly about
A. An introduction to a treehouse resort.
B. Different new ways to spend holidays.
C. A discussion on the meaning of a resort.
D. Advantages of playing in national parks.
D
A recent experiment tested whether coffee pulp (果肉), a leftover of the coffee growing process, could help
bring Costa Rica’s rainforests back to life. Researchers tested two pieces of land to see how the coffee waste would
affect deforested land, covering one area of grass with about 20 inches of the pulp and leaving the other untouched.
After two years, the piece of land given coffee pulp showed a remarkable improvement. 80 percent of the land
was covered by young trees, some already 15 feet — including species that can grow as tall as 60 feet —
compared to just 20 percent in the untreated land. In the coffee-fueled land, trees were also four times taller on
average, and the soil was more nutritious.
“Not only does it give coffee producers an environment-friendly way to deal with their waste, but it also
speeds up the timeline to bring back destroyed forests,” says Rebecca Cole, a study author. “It takes tropical forests
hundreds of years to grow back. To have such tall trees in only two years is really amazing.”
Cole found that as the decomposed (腐烂的) remains of the grasses mix with the coffee’s nutritious layer, it
creates a rich soil. That, in turn, attracts insects, which attracts birds, who then drop seeds into the land, as does the
wind. Then comes the rebirth. So compared with just using coffee pulp and letting nature do the planting, it’s
labor-intensive (劳动密集的) and expensive to bring back forests by planting trees.
While Cole’s experiment with coffee pulp successfully jump-started forest growth, there are downsides.
Coffee pulp is really smelly. It also attracts a lot of other insects that are harmful to nearby humans. There’s also
some concern that it will have harmful effects on watersheds. There can be some pollution.
While this experiment was carried out away from water sources, Cole says their future research will look at
the possible impact on surrounding areas. In addition to researching the long-term impacts, Cole is interested in
testing other agricultural byproducts. As long as the crop waste is nutritious and not harmful to human health, she
would expect similar results.
12. What does Rebecca Cole think of the result of the experiment
A. It creates a win-win situation.
B. It agrees with previous studies.
C. It challenges traditional beliefs.
D. It brings about undesirable changes.
13. What can be inferred about bringing back forests by using coffee pulp
A. It is helpful but difficult.
B. It is impractical and useless.
C. It is money-saving and labor-saving.
D. It is environment-friendly but time-wasting.
14. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. How to Protect the Rainforests in Costa Rica
B. The Disadvantages of Using Coffee Pulp in Forests
C The Long-term Research on Agricultural Byproducts
D Coffee Pulp: A New Way to Restore Costa Rica’s Rainforests
15. What may be Cole’s one future research focus
A. The effects of other crop waste.
B. Ways to speed up agricultural production.
C. The serious impacts of agricultural byproducts.
D. Methods of avoiding the side effects of coffee pulp.

With three kids under care, I never took a break, completely ignoring any self-care. When I was too tired to
make myself dinner, I just ate the kids’ leftover cereal (麦片粥). Knowing nothing about nutrition, I thought this a
great plan to lose weight and called it “the Cereal for Diet.” Of course, the plan failed, as did all my other attempts.
One day, after cleaning up all the mess my kids had made, I went out for a walk. When passing a gym, I
looked away. Healthy people went there, not I. While turning away, I saw an ad for a six-month fitness challenge. I
continued my fast walk in the opposite direction, but that sign just stayed on my mind.
I still remember the reason why I decided to sign up for the challenge. It was a ten-minute period in which my
son threw his plate straight up, sending noodles and sauce flying everywhere. As soon as my husband got home, I
said, “You’re in charge.”
I headed directly for the gym, marched straight in and said, “Fix me.” I was assigned a young and fit trainer,
Emily. She asked what my goals were for the six-month challenge. At that moment, I was speechless. Noticing my
embarrassment, Emily just handed me the heaviest weights I had in my life and said, “Okay, so six months later
you will compete in a body-building show.” I tried explaining my scare, but she ignored my fear, and we jumped
into strict workouts and nutrition planning.
Over the next six months, Emily forced me to focus on myself — my wants and my needs. I learned to see
food as strength and sweat as progress. I learned how to fuel my body instead of starving it, balancing proteins,
carbs (碳水化合物), and fats. Emily pushed me past my limits, correcting my form, timing my breaks, and
cheering me on when I wanted to quit. I improved every day in the gym.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为 150 个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
One day, Emily handed me an application form.

B. He visited a chocolate factory near his home.
C. He bought cookies from a local chocolate factory.
D. He helped do some work in the family chocolate factory.
5. What did Brynn do to get over his sadness about the loss of his dad

D. He focused on working in the family chocolate shop.
6. Which of the following best describes Brynn’s life during the holiday season
A. Peaceful. B. Busy. C. Lonely. D. Exciting.
7. What can we learn about Brynn from the text

One day, Emily handed me an application form. I realized it was for the body-building show she had
mentioned months earlier. Hesitantly, I took over the form and stared at it, memories of my messy, tired old self
flashing through my mind. But then I thought of the early mornings at the gym, the balanced meals I’d learned to
prepare, and Emily’s strong belief in me. With a deep breath, I picked up the pen and signed my name — for the
first time in years, I chose to prioritize my own growth.
Soon, I jumped into weeks of preparation. I adjusted my workouts, pushing harder than ever before. At home,
I no longer reached for leftover cereal but prepared nutritious dishes that fueled my energy. My kids cheered as
they watched me lift weights, and my husband proudly helped with childcare so I could practice posing. When the
show day finally arrived, I stepped onto the stage with confidence. As I struck my final pose, I knew this wasn’t the
end; it was the start of a lifelong journey of self-care and self-love.
