Yvon Chouinard still possesses, in the proud language of the climbing community, the “dirtbag” sensibility.
In the 1960s, he lived to climb and made do selling handmade climbing gear (装备) so he could devote himself to the mountains. Even today, at the age of 83, when he visits my wife and me in our New York City apartment, he’s likely to spread out his sleeping bag on our sofa when he retires for the night.
I know Yvon best as a rock climber and a visionary man. With a genius for invention and design, this self-taught carpenter founded Patagonia, the outdoor clothing company, and turned it into a global brand. He had lots of help. The Patagonia staff brought in advanced techniques and new styles to go with old favorites.
For decades, Patagonia gave away 1 percent of its sales to environmental causes. Last
week, Yvon announced that he, along with his wife and children, had given away the company,
valued at S3 billion, to a nonprofit group. Now the company’s profits of some $100 million a year will be used to fight climate change and safeguard some of the planet’s decreasing wild places.
Yvon has been my friend for 40 years. We share common values, especially when it comes to the environment. He was uncomfortable with attention. On one trip, I remember a couple of
Icelandic businessmen eager to connect to Yvon. He was not much interested, so they said, “Is there anything we can do for you ” He said, “Yeah, can you change my leftover Icelandic
money ” and with that, he handed them the equivalent (等值) of a dollar in change.
Yvon is old-fashioned and has very strong values that he doesn’t hesitate to express. He
once lectured his audience on their failure to spend more time and money on saving the
environment. “I blame myself for not doing enough,“ he told them, “but you still have a chance.” He knows his time is running out for his effort to save the planet.
4 .What can we say about Yvon
A .He is a self-taught designer. B .He has an interest in advanced techniques.
C .He was strict with his employees. D .He regards climbing as a way of life.

5 .Why did Yvon donate Patagonia
A.To contribute to environmental protection. B.To keep a promise that he made 60 years ago.
C .To repay those who had helped him. D .To make his remaining years less busy.
6 .How did Yvon respond when facing the Icelandic businessmen
A .He lent money to them. B .He reminded them of their leftovers.
C .He rejected their real intention. D .He was eager to make friends with them.
7 .Which can be a suitable title for the text
A .Patagonia: new and old. B .Yvon Chouinard: his ups and downs.
C .Patagonia: a global company. D .Yvon Chouinard: my “dirtbag” friend.

When it comes to cooling the planet, tropical forests serve as “carbon sinks” — their trees absorb carbon dioxide (CO2) from the air. Now, a new study finds one Australian rainforest is
doing the opposite.
The research, published in Nature, analyzed data from wet tropical rainforests in Australia, which scientists had tracked for nearly 50 years. By examining woody biomass from the
rainforest, which typically holds a large amount of carbon, researchers found the forest is releasing more carbon than it absorbs, and this switch happened about 25 years ago.
Since trees release stored carbon back into the atmosphere when they die and break down, this shift indicates that trees in this Australian rainforest are dying faster than they were decades ago, said lead author Hannah Carle, a forest ecosystem researcher at Western Sydney University. Drier air, higher temperatures and water shortages might all play a role. This is the first rainforest recorded as switching from a carbon sink to a carbon source, and Carle added the phenomenon
could reflect a declining ecosystem in Australian wet rainforests overall.
“The wet tropics in Australia occupy a bit of a warmer, drier climate space than tropical
forests on other continents, thus potentially serving as an analog for what tropical forests will
experience in other parts of the world,” said Carle. Previous research suggested that tropical
rainforests increase their capacity for carbon storage in response to consistently increasing CO2 in the atmosphere. This half-century of data challenges that.
Raphael Trouve, who researches forest dynamics at the University of Melbourne in

Australia and was not involved in the study, told The Guardian that data sets like this one can help track changes in the climate and environment. “It allows us to put the theory up against reality and better understand how these systems work.”
8 .Which aspect of the Australian rainforest does the research focus on
A .The makeup of woody biomass. B .The effects on climate change.
C .The level of carbon concentration. D .The change in carbon balance.
9 .What does the shift in paragraph 3 show
A .Rising tree death rates. B .Stable weather patterns.
C .Modest tropical rainfall. D .Instant ecosystem collapse
10 .What does the underlined word “analog” in paragraph 4 mean
A .Different model. B .Sustainable system.
C .Similar example. D .Historical background.
11 .How does Raphael Trouve view these long-term data sets
A .They provide insights into the truth. B .They offer solutions to climate change.
C .They are consistent with popular beliefs. D .They are independent of historical data.

Keeping food cold often comes with a hidden problem: Traditional ice melts (融化),
leaving pools of water that can make drinks watery, damage products, or even spread dangerous bacteria. Now, researchers at the University of California, Davis, have created jelly ice, a reusable and biodegradable (可生物降解的) alternative that cools like ice but never melts into liquid.
The new material is made of 90% water and can be shaped into various forms. It stays solid below freezing, softens at room temperature, and can be reused by simply washing and refreezing. “Compared to regular ice of the same shape and size, jelly ice has up to 80% of the cooling
efficiency,” said Jiahan Zou, a study researcher, “We can reuse the material and maintain the heat absorbance across multiple cooling and warning cycles, an advantage that regular ice cannot
offer.”
The project began when UC Davis food scientists noticed how much ice was used in
fish-processing plants and how meltwater could spread bacteria. Seeking a safer option for grocery
seafood displays, the team turned to gelatin a food-safe material whose protein structure can trap
water even as it freezes and thaws (解冻).
After years of testing, the researchers perfected a simple, one-step process for making jelly ice. The material is made from natural components and can be biodegraded after use. It doesn’t
contribute to microplastic pollution, even offering a side benefit of improving tomato plant growth when added to soil.
Beyond grocery stores, jelly ice could have wide applications. It could help preserve
medical supplies during shipping, reduce waste in biotechnology, and provide reliable cooling options. It promises fresher food shipments without the mess of melting ice packs while also offering a sustainable alternative that reduces pollution risks and supports agriculture
Although licenses for the technology have already been secured, jelly ice is not yet
available for public purchase. It still requires market analysis, product design, and large-scale
production testing. Inspired by its success, the team is now studying other natural polymers, such as plant-based proteins, to see if similar innovations can be developed.
12 .What is one advantage of jelly ice over traditional ice
A .Fixed shape. B .Saving water.
C .Repeated use. D .Cooling efficiency.
13 .What does the author imply about jelly ice in paragraphs 3 and 4
A .It stretches tomato growing cycles B .It adopts a bacteria-free material.
C .It shortens the freezing time. D .It lowers environmental impacts.
14 .What can we learn from the last paragraph
A .The official approval is underway. B .Jelly ice needs further development.
C .Traditional ice will soon disappear. D .Other natural polymers will be available.
15 .What can be a suitable title for the text
A .A Game-changer That Controls Bacteria. B .A Cooling Alternative That We Can Order.
C .A Cooling Material That Doesn’t Melt. D .A Quick Fix That Cuts Biological Pollution.

The Secret to Taking Great Notes
Taking good notes is a key part of the learning process. However, merely writing down what you hear word-for-word is ineffective. Here are some proven strategies to transform your note-taking.
One of the most popular and structured systems is the Cornell Method, developed for and widely taught at Cornell University. ____16____ This physical layout guides your thinking
process. During class, take notes in the main section. After class, use the cue column to write
keywords or questions. Finally, write a brief summary of the entire lesson at the bottom of the
page. This multi-step process is scientifically proven to significantly improve long-term memory retention.
For those who think in images and connections, Mind Mapping is a visual way to organize information. Start with the main topic in the center and draw branches out for key subtopics.
17 You can use colors, symbols, and arrows to make connections. This method is
especially beneficial for visual learners as it shows the relationships between concepts, making complex topics easier to grasp.
Regardless of the method you choose, the core principle is active engagement. Don’t just
passively record information. 18 Engage with the material by paraphrasing the speaker’s points. This forces you to process and understand the information on the spot.
Of course, the best method is the one that works for you. 19 You might use the
Cornell Method for history lectures, which are dense with facts, but a Mind Map for brainstorming an essay topic. You might even combine different elements from various methods to create your
own personalized system.
20 Review your notes periodically within 24 hours of taking them. This short, spaced repetition is one of the most powerful ways to move information from your short-term to your long-term memory, solidifying your learning and making exam preparation much less
stressful.
A .Then, add smaller branches for specific details.
B .Therefore, it is popular among university students.
C .Ultimately, it’s crucial to review your notes afterward.
D .Experiment with different techniques to find your favorite.
E .This means you can paraphrase the content in your own words.

ground to stop me. I can ‘run’ like everyone else,” Leo said, holding his hands closely with strong hope in his eyes.
When Leo walked into the swimming pool for the first time, the cold water reached his
stomach. Suddenly, his right leg lost control, and he started to sink (下沉). Coach Lisa quickly
caught him and said softly, “Don’t be afraid. The water will hold you up.” But the training was
much harder than Leo had thought. Kicking, which others learned easily, made Leo struggle a lot. His right leg just couldn’t move in the proper way. He could only swim two meters before choking (窒息) on water.
After about one month, Leo watched other kids swimming freely. He sat by the pool and
wiped his tears: “I can never do this. I want to give up.” His mom sat by his side and said, “Look, Leo. At first, you couldn’t even stand in the water. But now you can swim five meters — that’s
progress!” Coach Lisa also came over with a float (浮板): “Let’s try a new way. We’ ll practice using your left arm to swim first, and use a float for your right leg.”
The days of trying again were still full of challenges. One night, Leo’s right leg hurt so badly that he couldn’t fall asleep at all. The next morning, Leo refused to go to the pool, but his mother still drove him there. When Coach Lisa came to check on him, she brought along some good news. “The city’s disabled swimming competition is coming soon,” Coach Lisa said.
“You’re getting faster and stronger, Leo. And I’ve signed you up for this competition.”

Immersive art is not just a technical way to represent video and audio in huge spaces. The word immersive indicates a deep commitment of intentions which
connect images and sounds in a way that the audience is able to experience a different way of the art.(沉浸式艺术不仅仅是在巨大空间中表现视频和音频的技术方法。沉浸式这个词表明了一种深刻的意图,通过将图像和声音连接起来,让观众能够体验到一种不同的艺术方式)”以及第三段“True to its name, this exhibition transforms the iconic paintings of Vincent van Gogh into moving, wall-filling projections. “Immersive Van Gogh” promises half-a-million cubic feet of
projections that pull from some of the post-impressionist’s most recognizable pieces, including
The Bedroom, Sunflowers and, yes, The Starry Night.(正如它的名字一样,这次展览将文森特·梵高的标志性画作变成了移动的、充满墙壁的投影。
故选 A。
To be announced before the exhibit opens, existing ticket
holders will receive an email with the place name and location once it is made public.(在展览开

When it comes to cooling the planet, tropical forests serve as ‘carbon sinks’ — their trees absorb carbon dioxide (CO2) from the air. Now, a new study finds
现在,一项新研究发现澳大利亚的一处雨林却在做相反的事情)”以及第二段中的“researchers found the forest is releasing more carbon than it
absorbs, and this switch happened about 25 years ago.(研究人员发现,这片森林释放的碳比吸收的多,这种转变大约发生在 25 年前)”可知,该研究聚焦于澳大利亚雨林碳平衡的变化(从吸收碳变为释放碳)。故选 D 项。
Since trees release stored carbon back into the atmosphere
when they die and break down, this shift indicates that trees in this Australian rainforest are dying faster than they were decades ago, said lead author Hannah Carle, a forest ecosystem researcher at Western Sydney University.(因为树木在枯萎腐烂时,会将储存的碳重新释放到大气中西悉尼大学森林生态系统研究员、该研究的主要作者汉娜·卡尔说,这种转变表明,这片澳大利亚雨林的树木死亡速度比几十年前更快了)”可知,第三段中的转变(从碳汇变为碳源)表明树木死亡率上升。故选 A 项。
The wet tropics in Australia occupy a bit of a warmer, drier climate space than tropical forests on other continents, thus potentially serving as an analog for
what tropical forests will experience in other parts of the world,(澳大利亚的湿润热带地区比其他大陆的热带雨林所处的气候更温暖、更干燥,因此有可能成为世界其他地区热带雨林未来遭遇的情况的 analog)”可知,澳大利亚雨林的气候环境与其他地区未来可能出现的情况有相似性,由此可猜测 analog 意为“相似的例子” 。故选 C 项。
Raphael Trouve, who researches forest dynamics at the
University of Melbourne in Australia and was not involved in the study, told The Guardian that
data sets like this one can help track changes in the climate and environment. “It allows us to put
the theory up against reality and better understand how these systems work.”(拉斐尔 特鲁夫任 职于澳大利亚墨尔本大学,主要研究森林动态,且并未参与该项研究。

cannot offer.(我们可以重复使用这种材料,并在多个冷却和升温周期中保持吸热性,这是普通冰无法提供的优势。)”
根据文章第三段中的“the team turned to gelatin a food-safe material whose protein structure can trap water even as it freezes and thaws (解冻).(研究小组转向了明胶,一种食品安全的材料,其蛋白质结构即使在冷冻和解冻时也能锁住水分。)” 以及第四段中的“The material is made from natural components and can be biodegraded after use. It doesn’t contribute to microplastic pollution, even offering a side benefit of improving tomato plant growth when
D“It lowers environmental
Although licenses for the technology have already
been secured, jelly ice is not yet available for public purchase. It still requires market analysis,
Now, researchers at the University of California, Davis,
