Four Fantastic Museums for Kids to ExploreA Journey into Medical History, Leeds
The Thackray Museum of Medicine in Leeds has recently undergone a major renovation, offering visitors a vivid dive into medical history. Its highlight is a life-sized Victorian street
scene, complete with authentic smells and historical details. The museum also showcases the
devastating impacts of once-deadly infectious diseases like cholera and smallpox — diseases that were widespread long before the invention of vaccines. Beyond exhibitions, there are engaging
talks, interactive displays and fun games, as well as introductions to the remarkable health heroes who dedicated their lives to fighting diseases over the centuries.

combining indoor and outdoor exhibits, perfect for young history and machine lovers. A massive steam engine stands proudly at the entrance, immediately catching the eye. Inside, two 1967
Victoria Line train carriages are on show, with their driver’s cabs open for kids who dream of
being train drivers to explore. The museum also features Fireman Frank’s display, which includes a classic fire engine that starred in popular TV shows such as London’s Burning.
Admission: Free for all.
A World of Illusions and Vision, Edinburgh
Edinburgh’s Camera Obscura and World of Illusions offers a magical experience, taking
kids on a journey through the history of vision and light. It presents a unique glimpse of what
Edinburgh looked like in the past, with stunning views and historical insights. Spanning five
floors, the museum houses more than 100 fully interactive exhibits — and there are no “do not
touch” signs anywhere, making it incredibly kid-friendly. The perspective room is a particular hit:
young visitors can dance with their own shadows, match their faces with a monkey’s in a fun optical trick, pretend to serve their head on a plate and even lie on a life-sized shark model, all through amazing visual illusions.

In 2012, an iPhone fell into my hands. This smart technology seemed like the entrance to only fun and positive things like chatting with friends and blogging.
However, seven years later, I had become horribly limited to it. Recent reports show that I’m not alone. According to a study, the average American spends five hours a day on smart
devices and about 2.5 of those hours are spent on social, messaging, media and entertainment

apps.
It’s hard to explain when the love and joy I felt for my iPhone turned into a dependency. I fell asleep to my phone every night and woke to it each morning. I checked the weather app every morning before I chose how to dress for the day. I used it to help me find my way through a city I should know well enough on my own. I updated my email box every time I picked my phone up.
Just like with any addiction, my phone dependency began to influence my life. While
spending time with family, I’d stare into a small screen on my lap instead of being involved in
communicating with my loved ones. At work, my productivity levels dropped. And then, my
four-year relationship came to an end. Eventually, I was left with years of memories and a mobile phone that couldn’t provide enjoyable company across a dinner table, share in the joys of
experiencing a concert or kiss me goodnight before bed.
Now, I move through life with more purpose and intention. I’ve cut back on carelessly
giving away my limited time and attention to my phone. Instead, I focus my efforts on being as
present as possible. Truly training the mind to stay present is a long and challenging road, but it’s important to start somewhere.
I hope you’ll take a deep look at your own phone habits and reevaluate how important a role you are letting it play in your life. Whether or not you’ve reached a place in your life where your screen time feels problematic, there’s no harm in mindfully giving your current practices
some thought.

screens.

The rapid pace of change has been increasing people’s feelings of uncertainty. That
collective unease can take a toll on society’s well-being. Uncertainty challenges people’s ability to think clearly, sort through information and make sound decisions. This can make people likely to fall into cognitive traps.
However, uncertainty isn’t all bad. It can bring adventure, surprise, and newness to our life. From an evolutionary point of view, it makes sense that people try to predict the future. For our
ancestors, worrying and reacting quickly to threats was generally the safest bet.
Today’s problems, like climate change or global crises, are too big for one person to handle alone. Not knowing the future can be bad for mental health, especially for those with low
tolerance for uncertainty, who are more prone to anxiety, depression, and other disorders. The Internet, while providing quick information, may sacrifice accuracy and discourage deeper
inquiry.
Experiencing uncertainty is a bit like experiencing pain. People naturally tend to see this feeling as completely bad. But pain serves as a signal to apply a bandage or rush to the hospital. Similarly, uncertainty is setting off the alarm to pay attention.
In one experiment in 2023, researchers handed out one of two fliers (传单) with a rose to roughly 200 people walking down a busy street in Northern California. One flier read, “Life is
unpredictable. Stop and smell the roses.” The other read, “Life is constant. Stop and smell the
roses.” A short distance away, the team set up a table with a dozen roses and a blown-up version of the flier that just said “Stop and smell the roses.”
The result was that over a quarter of walkers who received the “Life is unpredictable” flier stopped at the table compared to just 11 percent of those who received the other flier. Paul Piff, a psychologist, said that uncertainty could enhance enjoyment. He also suggested focusing on the positive aspects within our control as a way to cope.
8 .What does the underlined phrase “take a toll on” in paragraph 1 mean
试卷第 6 页,共 14 页
A .Harm. B .Benefit. C .Reshape. D .Relieve.
9 .What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about
A .The cause of people’s uncertainty. B .New findings of recent studies.
C .The positive value of uncertainty. D .Examples of feeling uncertain.
10 .Why does the author compare uncertainty to pain in paragraph 4
A .To give an extreme example. B .To show its early warning effect.
C .To present a treatment option. D .To emphasize its negative effect.
11 .What does the result of the 2023 experiment imply
A .Uncertainty possibly increases the joy of life.
B .People are interested in the message of roses.
C .More people tend to overlook peaceful life.
D .People are curious about future possibilities.

Daily behaviours are largely automatic, with an estimated 65 percent performed on
“autopilot”. These habitual actions, formed through repetition, range from helpful to unhelpful. Understanding their formation and adjustment is therefore essential for improving health and
productivity.
However, studying habits is challenging precisely because they occur automatically,
making them difficult to observe and measure directly. While laboratory studies offer control, they often lack realism, and real-world studies, though realistic, are difficult to control due to countless uncontrolled variables (变量).
This is where virtual reality (VR) offers a promising solution. VR creates a
computer-generated, interactive 3D environment that balances realism with experimental control. At the University of Surrey, researchers develop new methodologies for studying habit formation with the aid of VR. In one project, participants wearing VR headsets act as hospital workers
preparing patient rooms by repeating a specific sequence(顺序) of tasks. This repetition aims to build habits in a realistic yet controlled setting.
The strength of the formed habits is then tested through multiple methods. These include self-reports, computer-based tasks, and intentional changes within the VR environment. For
试卷第 7 页,共 14 页
instance, participants might be asked to perform the tasks in a new order or while completing a competing mental task. If they unconsciously return to the old sequence or perform more slowly, it indicates the habit’s strength. VR allows researchers to precisely track actions, speeds, and
responses to such changes.
Consequently, VR bridges a critical gap, combining the control of a lab with the engaging realism of everyday life. Its potential is vast, as nearly any environment can be reproduced for
controlled study. This approach could help answer significant questions about how rewards affect habit formation, how to integrate new routines, or how to replace unwanted behaviours.
Ultimately, VR provides a powerful new tool to unlock insights into making and breaking habits, which is key to promoting positive behaviour change.
12 .Why is it difficult to study habits
A .Because habits only appear in real-life situations.
B .Because researchers don`t know how to observe and measure habits.
C .Because daily behaviors are too difficult to be controlled.
D .Because most daily behaviors are performed automatically.
13 .What is the key advantage of VR in studying habit formation
A .It eliminates the need for repeated experiments to form habits.
B .It creates a setting that combines experimental control with realism.
C .It allows researchers to track participants’ mental activities only.
D .It reproduces real hospital environments without any adjustment.
14 .What can be inferred from the passage
A .Habits formed in daily life are harder to get rid of than those formed in VR.
B .VR is expected to help people form positive habits and replace bad ones.
C .Traditional habit studies will gradually be replaced by VR technology.
D .The more automatic a behavior is, the more beneficial it will be to people.
15 .What is the main idea of the passage
A .Automatic daily habits have a double-edged effect on people’s life.
B .Researchers have proved the effectiveness of VR in treating bad habits.
C .VR technology serves as a breakthrough in the study of habit formation.
D .Traditional research methods are gradually replaced by VR applications.

Practical Health Tips for a Better 2026
As we enter 2026, focusing on simple, achievable habits is more effective than chasing major transformations for improving health. 16
Nutrition forms the foundation. Experts strongly recommend a balanced, whole-food diet, 17 This pattern, rich in vegetables, fruits, and whole grains, helps manage weight and reduce chronic disease risk. A practical start is to fill half your plate with vegetables at one meal each day.
Regular physical activity is equally crucial. Aiming for at least 150 minutes of moderate activity per week, plus two strength sessions, is highly beneficial. 18 Remember,
movement accumulated in short bursts throughout the day also counts.
19 Most adults need between seven and nine hours of sleep. Establishing a
calming bedtime routine, limiting screen time before sleep, and ensuring a cool, dark sleeping environment can greatly improve sleep quality.
Furthermore, nurturing mental well-being and social connections is vital. Strong
relationships enhance resilience and are linked to better health outcomes. Managing stress through mindfulness, meditation, or spending time in nature is also important. 20
Ultimately, the path to better health is built on sustainable daily choices. By starting small
and focusing on these core areas — diet, movement, sleep, and mental wellness — you can build a lasting foundation for vitality in 2026 and beyond.
A .For example, the Mediterranean diet is a top choice for long-term health.
B .Some people prefer high-intensity workouts at the gym.
C .Health experts emphasize that small, consistent changes lead to big benefits.
D .If feeling consistently overwhelmed, seek for professional help.
E .A sufficient amount of sleep is required.
F .Prioritizing quality sleep supports memory, immunity, and mood.
G .The key is to find activities you enjoy, like walking or dancing.

John and his mother lived in a house far from the city. John loved to wander through the
forest nearby. In the center of the forest was a shiny clear lake with schools of fish dancing in it. On his wanderings, John would often see animals such as deer and rabbits as he listened to the
birds singing in the trees. Fascinated by the beauty and liveliness of nature, he decided to become a great artist and present all of these breathtaking scenes to the world.
John studied at the local high school. Life had not been easy for John and his mother since his father had died. His mother knew how important a good education was in life, but she was
against his dream of becoming an artist. “How will you earn money as an artist ” she would ask.

“It’s not a stable job.” But as John got older, his passion for art became stronger.
Due to their circumstances, buying new paint was a luxury that John could simply not
afford. He used a worn drawing file and the limited colors he had to practice his craft. However, this lack of materials did not deter (使打消念头) him from his dream. He spent a significant
amount of time in the forest, secretly perfecting his craft. With continuous hard work and a distinctive gift for art, he drew more and more beautifully with each passing day.
One day, John learned that there was going to be a drawing competition in town, and that the deadline for submitting entries (参赛作品) was only two days away. This was the perfect
opportunity to fulfill his dream and show off his skills, but as he read the rules, he realized that he needed special paints and brushes for the competition. He didn’t have the courage to ask his
mother for money as he knew she did not approve.
That evening, his mother returned from work and handed him some money, saying, “This is for your lunch at school next month.” The money was more than enough for the materials he
desired! John’s face lit up.

Dear teachers and schoolmates,
Good morning! It’s my pleasure to share my thoughts on exercise and health today.
Regular exercise is the foundation of a strong body and a positive mood. It not only
strengthens our muscles and improves our physical fitness, but also helps us relieve academic
stress and stay in a good state of mind. On campus, we have plenty of easy and accessible choices:
we can jog along the playground in the morning, skip ropes during breaks, or play basketball and badminton with classmates after class. These activities don’t require any special equipment, just our enthusiasm and persistence.
I sincerely suggest that every one of us should spend at least 30 minutes exercising every day and develop a lifelong habit of keeping fit. Let’s move our bodies and embrace a healthy life together!
Thankyou!
