Cornell Note-Taking Method
试卷第 3 页,共 15 页
The Cornell method of taking notes was developed by Dr. Walter Pauk of Cornell University in the 1950s. It is a widely used system for noting material from a lecture or reading, and for
reviewing and retaining that material.Tips for Effective Use:
Self-Quiz Questions: Write simple questions in the cue column to test yourself later.
Summarize Even If Incomplete: Reflect on key points in your own words, even if your notes aren’t perfect.
Color Coding: Use colors to highlight key terms, definitions, and examples. This makes your notes clearer and more engaging.
Next Steps: Add actions you need to take in the summary to keep learning proactive.Use Your Notes to Study
Concentrate on the left-hand column and summary at the bottom. These contain the most important points you will need for your assignment or exam.
Cover the right side of the page (the note-taking column) with your hand or another sheet of paper. Quiz yourself by giving answers to the potential questions that you included in the left
column. Then uncover the right side and check your comprehension.
Reviewing frequently over a longer period of time, rather than cramming before a test, will greatly increase your retention and deepen your understanding of course material. With your
effective notes made using the Cornell system, you will be able to study efficiently and with minimal stress.
1 .What do Cue Column and Summary Column have in common
A .Focus on main ideas. B .Be filled in during class.
C .Record detailed lecture content. D .Serve as decorative areas.
2 .Which is the correct way to study with Cornell notes
A .Rewrite full notes regularly. B .Cover notes and test recall before checking.

This summer I came face-to-face with three deep-rooted fears: heights, bears, and ageing.
Two friends joined me on a four-day wilderness getaway, and since we were all in our
seventies, we decided we’d better go while we still could. Our adventure began with a scary drive up a winding mountain road.
On one hike, I found myself hanging onto a wire on a bridge made of two partly rotten (腐烂的) logs, suspended high above rushing rapids. I would never have attempted it without our
guide ahead, mouthing encouraging words. Fixing my eyes on her boots, I inched along the shaky logs. Somehow, I made it across, flooded with a rush of intense excitement and huge relief.
Later, after spotting bear tracks, we were told to make loud noises, which soon became a game once the tension faded.
Until suddenly, time stood still.
We had just crossed a stream when the guide whispered, “There’s a bear.” I looked up in disbelief and saw not one, but two, about ten meters above us— the brown mother in front, her cub behind.
Though scared speechless, I couldn’t help noticing how beautiful they looked in their
natural setting. I wondered if it would be my last memory. As they started towards us, we
recovered enough to shout and wave our hiking poles. Taken aback, they stopped, and then slowly turned away. Another fear was overcome!
On our final morning, after a quiet, thoughtful walk through the forest, we were asked to
bring back a “meaningful” stick, rock, and leaf to share what would “stick” with us, what
“rocked,” and what we would “leaf” behind. The bond of friendship would stick with me. Women supporting one another truly rocked. And I hoped to leave some fears behind.
Our guide ended by expressing her admiration, praising not only our fitness but also our positive attitude, and saying she hoped to be like us in another thirty or forty years. Those

Standing in Nevada’s dry landscape, Project Red uses new methods to capture geothermal (地热) energy. Unlike old plants that need natural hot water storage areas near volcanoes, this
facility uses Enhanced Geothermal Systems(EGS) to get heat from solid rock. Workers start by
drilling two wells over 8,000 feet deep into rock hot enough to roast a turkey. Through the first
well, high-pressure water is pumped down, breaking the rock to create paths. A key procedure
involves drilling another 3,250-foot horizontal well to expand the area of hot rock that the system contacts — a technique used in oil and gas industry in order to maximize yield.
Water moves through these man-made cracks for 24-48 hours, gathering heat until
temperatures exceed 380°F. As heated water rises through the second well, pressure changes near the surface turn about 20% into steam. This steam powers machines connected to generators,
creating clean electricity. Then the steam cools and condenses (凝结) back into hot water, which is used to heat a different kind of liquid with a much lower boiling point, such as butane, to drive a second generator before it is transported back to the system.
This progress eliminates geothermal’s old obstacle of needing volcanic zones. Traditional
试卷第 6 页,共 15 页
plants simply collect steam from natural hot springs, while EGS establishes water storage in
unreachable ground. Another feature of the system is that they can be made more profitable by
taking advantage of energy price shifts. Operators could plug the exit wells, causing water to
accumulate inside the system, building up pressure and heat. Then the energy could be extracted during times when it is most valuable — such as during cloudy or windless periods when solar or wind aren’t working.
Some oil and gas companies, recognizing that the energy landscape is changing, are
increasingly interested in building geothermal systems. There’s even a growing push to use direct geothermal heat to warm buildings, either through shallow heat pumps for residential buildings or integrated systems designed for entire districts — as Paris and Munich already do.
8 .What is the main purpose of creating the second well
A .To speed up rock breaking.
B .To improve the efficiency of heat transfer.
C .To reduce drilling difficulty.
D .To regulate the pressure inside the wells.
9 .What does the underlined word “it” refer to in paragraph 2
A .Butane. B .Electricity.
C .Water. D .Steam.
10 .What can we infer from paragraph 3
A .EGS depends on specific ground types.
B .Traditional plants will be replaced by EGS.
C .Geothermal energy is a stable power source.
D .EGS is more advanced than solar and wind.
11 .What key development is mentioned in the last paragraph
A .Geothermal energy changing the landscape.
B .Traditional energy losing competitiveness.
C .Energy companies abandoning fossil fuel.
D .Geothermal energy expanding applications.

For some readers, a dictionary opens up a world. Dictionaries contain multiple pleasures, such as settling word-game wars by turning actual pages. For the rest, a dictionary is either
outdated or strictly online. In 2012, Encyclopaedia Britannica stopped printing new editions, going digital-only.
In his book, Unabridged: The Thrill of (and Threat to) the Modern Dictionary, American journalist Stefan Fatsis writes ofthe shift brought about by our decade-old dependence on search engines: “Definitions, good and bad, were a click away, and most people didn’t care or couldn’t
tell which was which: expert research, scraped data, zombie (僵尸) websites, whatever popped up in a search.”
When I was a child, I loved dictionaries, and so did every sensible parent in Calcutta. If
your child was literate, one of the 20 volumes ofthe Oxford English Dictionary or an
illustratedCollins was the surest way to keep them happily occupied, setting them off on hunts for lost or forgotten words.
Fatsis sees dictionary-making as “a human endeavor (努力) stretching back to the third
millennium BCE”. From the Akkadians to Sanskrit scholars, what dictionary makers hoped to do went far beyond the already tricky task of writing definitions: their job was to explain and track “the endless shifts in language” .
Change is inevitable, though Fatsis also asks what we lose in the name of convenience. He writes, “the job of the dictionary was firmly established … By the time I finished this book, it
wasn’t clear how much longer flesh-bone-and-blood lexicographers would be needed to document the march of the English language. Between traditional search engines and AI-enhanced search
through LLMs (large language models), the way we look up words, and find meaning in language itself, has changed.”
We can’t claim that humanity still needs physical dictionaries. Like encyclopedias and
atlases, the best ofthem have long moved online. Indeed, the starting points of most search
engines were the encyclopedias and dictionaries compiled (编纂) by experts. But I plan to hold on to my beloved, dog-eared physical dictionaries — such priceless time capsules, one of the last
paradises of freedom from the endless scroll of digital content.
12 .What has reduced people’s reliance on physical dictionaries
A .The decline of the print media.
试卷第 8 页,共 15 页
B .The convenience of online lookup.
C .People’s indifference to accuracy.
D .Publishers’ insistence on going digital.
13 .What can we infer about the future of real-life lexicographers
A .Their workload will double.
B .They will remain in demand.
C .Their existence is threatened.
D .They need to upgrade their skills.
14 .Why does the author stick to physical dictionaries
A .They boost long-term memory.
B .They last longer than digital files.
C .They offer an escape from screens.
D .They give more authoritative definitions.
15 .What can be a suitable title for the text
A .A Word in Favor of Dictionaries
B .My Love for Looking up Words
C .A Best-seller on the Theme of Change
D .Human Endeavors in Dictionary-making

STEM vs. STEAM
STEM is short for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. The term was
coined by Judith Ramaley while a director at National Science Foundation in 2001. Since then, STEM-focused education has been extended to many countries beyond the United States.
However, education is a constantly evolving game. ____16____ One of the latest philosophies gaining steam is adding an arts component to the STEM educational focus, thus, creating the STEM vs. STEAM debate.
The believers in STEM education want the focus to remain on the core STEM principles.
试卷第 9 页,共 15 页
17 Tasks involving product design encourage students to draw and create. Adding arts will take away from the original intention of focusing on the STEM disciplines.
18 They argue that adding arts to STEM is a way to develop strong STEM
students who think creatively. Several studies have shown that engaging students’ arts strength
increases their motivation when it comes to STEM activities. 19 Furthermore, for kids who might be turned off from STEM subjects due to a dislike of numbers, highlighting the artistic component of lessons can reach out and draw them in.
While they seem to be opposed, both sides of this argument may have the right idea.
20 Consider the growing field of computer animation, where you must have both artistic abilities and strong technology fields. Also, the most basic of all children’s toys, wooden blocks, are an incredible example of STEAM exploration. They bring design, geometry, and engineering concepts to our youngest learners, setting them up for a lifetime of creative thinking.
A .The STEAMers disagree.
B .Actually, science and arts are inseparable.
C .It consistently introduces new theories and practices.
D .Their idea is that there are already enough arts in their approach.
E .Thus, good teachers are always learning to keep pace with updated knowledge.
F .It also improves the probability of success in complicated tasks and challenges.
G .They believe adding art makes the STEM courses accessible to more students.

It’s been about three years since I moved into the house with a large study. Just after the
movers departed, I carefully separated fiction from non-fiction, arranging the books alphabetically by author. Everything seemed perfect, but that didn’t last.
I recently went for Lydia Davis’s Essays, a collection of non-fiction that turned up sideways on a shelf where the works of Philip Roth first took up . This

shelving chaos; biographies now lie in short-story collections; oversized novels rest on top of the neatly sized ones.
The late French novelist Georges Perec understood the of shelving. In his Brief Notes on the Manner of Arranging One’s Books, Perec’s discussion of the many
handling your personal library only shows how the task is. You, for instance, could decide to keep only 365 books — buy one, one. But then, he writes, you’d have to determine what a “book” is. Is a three-volume series one book or three Maybe it’s better to 365 authors instead. But then some books are anonymous (匿名的).
We can books alphabetically, or by publication date, genre and more. But either way, Perec insists, we are doomed (注定) to — partly because any one book has so
many different ways to be uncooperative. Sometimes a book via size. Where do I put Chris Ware’s Building Stories, published in a board-game-sized box And shelving by genre is a headache.Where does autofiction go
I had a hard time finding that Davis book. Along the way, though, there were not only
frustrations but also rediscoveries — I’d once loved and forgotten. Since May 2021, I’ve been doing writing consultations over Zoom (视频会议), which means my messy shelves to public examination. Everyone is too polite to mention it. But if somebody did, I’d just share what Perec knew all along — a neat library is a dead one, and I’ll accept a little chaos
as of my living.
