Hansel Enmanuel, a 19-year-old basketball player, has drawn attention after videos spread quickly showing his awesome skills, like making 3-point shots and dunking (灌篮) with ease. All with just his right arm. It looks almost effortless when he plays. However, it’s not. It never has
been.
Enmanuel was 6 when he was climbing a wall. It fell over him, bricks and blocks on his left arm. He was rushed to the hospital, but the doctor couldn’t save his arm and it was cut off several inches below the shoulder. It was a dark time for Enmanuel and his family.
试卷第 4 页,共 13 页
Slowly, things got better for the little boy. He still remembers the first time he tied his
shoes. Just 7, Enmanuel was waiting for his mother to do it for him, but she was busy cooking. “I was like, never mind, I’m going to start,” he said in a recent interview. “I told myself let me try. I was trying. Then I made it.” “So I was excited, excited like crazy,” he added.
Small things became huge victories. Months after that, Enmanuel tried basketball, too. But it’s not an easy path. His missing arm left him lacking balance. Every time he tried to run, he’d
crash to the ground, falling on debris (碎片) covered across the courts he played on. These falls left him with numerous scars (疤痕). In the interview, Enmanuel pointed to the scar after scar down the length of the leg, reminders of a hard time that has brought him to excellence in
basketball skills.
Enmanuel first dunked at 14, and it wasn’t long before his popularity grew with the views on his videos. But it wasn’t the highlight videos that interested his coach, Corey Gipson. He liked Enmanuel’s attitude and the way he carried himself on the court. “Hansel is a very tough person,” Gipson said. “When you see him on the floor, you just see an unstoppable force that doesn’t take anything for granted (理所应当).” “I’m not special,” Enmanuel said. “I’m not different than
nobody. The only difference is that I’ve got one arm, but that’s not different.”

Is this text AI-generated That question crops up a lot these puter software to flag AI-generated text exists. But most programs share one crucial weakness, says Jun Jang: no sense of style. His new software hopes to fill that gap.
Jun’s program takes note of a writer’s stylistic characteristics. It can then use those
characteristics to check if another text was written by the same person. Jun says his project was motivated by seeing students admit using AI tools on classroom assignments.
But relying too much on these tools can erode someone’s creativity. It can also harm their ability to work out problems themselves, Jun says. And young people are most at risk. “I figured that by me making an attempt to solve this issue, I could help millions of teachers as well as
maybe help kids become more creative and spark more innovation.” Jun says.
AI use for homework is not rare. The Turnitin program is an existing tool to check who
wrote a piece of text. In the first year it was available, it analyzed more than 200 million student papers. Last year, it reported evidence that some 11 in every 100 papers it reviewed had used AI for at least a fifth of their text. Three in every 100 papers used AI for four-fifths oftheir content.
“That’s absolutely no surprise,” Jun says. Some forms of generative AI are powerful,
game-changing technologies. “Using AI can be good for education, obviously,” he says, “But a lot of kids don’t use it properly.”
Since the release of some AI software, teachers increasingly have had to make hard calls. They must decide whether a student wrote an essay, or just asked a machine to write it.
Wrongfully flagging some student’s work as cheating would decrease the student’s trust in their teacher.
Jun’s new program hopes to limit that.
8 .What does Jun’s new software focuses on
A .Text length. B .Content logic.
C .Word count. D .Writing style.

B .Generate more essays for students.

Male green hermit hummingbirds (隐士蜂鸟) have bills evolved for fighting, research finds.
Let’s get one thing out of the way: All hummingbirds fight. Most species fight for food, using their tiny bodies and sharp bills to force competitors away from flowers. But the green
hermit hummingbird, which lives primarily in mountain forests of Central and South America, fights to win a mate.
Hummingbirds’ weapon of choice Their own bills. The birds raise a long, needle-thin bill into the air before driving it into their opponent. The risks are high: They also use their bills to eat. Losing a fight means a hummingbird might not find a mate. Breaking a bill could mean they
starve.
New research found that these fights have shaped the species’ evolution, yielding
significant differences in bill shape for male and female pared to their female
counterparts, the males’ bills are straighter, sharper, and structurally stronger. The straighter bills work better as weapons, while female birds’ more curved bills provide improved access to the
inside of some flowers.
Through curvature and angle analyses, researchers found that male bills are 3% straighter and 69% sharper, respectively, with a knife-like tip not found on female bills. But the differences, researchers found, extend beyond bill shape. CT scans revealed that the male bill’s internal
structure provided additional strength by transmitting forces more efficiently.
Finally, researchers observed that the male’s straighter bill expends 52. 4% less energy due

to deformation, and is more resistant to breaking. The male bill experienced on average 39% less stress than the female bill. They also found that male bills’ straighter shape can accommodate a wider variety of attack angles, requiring less precision while fighting.
12 .Why do male green hermit hummingbirds fight
A .To get enough food. B .To gain a partner.
C .To keep wildness. D .To protect nests.
13 .What can we infer about hummingbirds from paragraph 3
A .Bills affect survival.
B .Males fight less often.
C .They risk starving.
D .Being defeated means death.
14 .What is the researchers’ view on the different bills
A .They are accidental and normal.
B .They make males good at feeding.
C .They reflect adaptive evolution.
D .They are mainly for showing off.
15 .Which can be the best title for the text
A .How Hummingbirds Fight for Food
B .Bill Evolution in Hermit Hummingbirds
C .Why Male Hummingbirds Have Longer Bills
D .The Feeding Habits of Hermit Hummingbirds

When my son was diagnosed with autism (自闭症) and multiple disorders, my world was broken. How was my beautiful little boy ever going to cope While the other children playing
balls at playtime, yelling and shouting with joy, Rufus would sit silently watching from the
sidelines. With two left feet, he couldn’t keep up with the fun and games, so his teachers let him stay indoors alone, quietly coloring pictures of animals. It was a desperately sad situation that
neither my family nor I knew how to handle.
Birthdays had always been rather painful for Rufus. He hated to be the centre of attention, couldn’t cope with being hugged or touched, and found it difficult to communicate his feelings.
Each year, I suggested books about animals, something that he was fascinated by, but on his tenth birthday I decided he should have an animal of his own.
I decided the right pet would be a puppy. On the morning of his birthday, Rufus’s “gift”
woke him up to wish him many happy returns. Initially, I worried that the puppy would make
Rufus panic. But far from upsetting him, the puppy seemed to override all his symptoms. After a couple of “accidents” on the carpet, I explained to Rufus that his new best friend would need to be taken out into the garden after every nap and meal. I expected this to become my job, but Rufus
insisted on playing the role of a protector. He insisted on accompanying his new friend outside each and every time.
试卷第 12 页,共 13 页
It took Rufus less than ten minutes to decide upon a name, Maximus (Max for short). From the very start, Maximus worked his doggy magic on my boy. From beyond his closed door, I
could hear my previously silent son chattering away to a puppy who listened attentively to his master’s words. As his confidence with talking grew, Rufus started shouting Maximus’s name from room to room — not that his little black shadow was ever more than a few feet away.
