Our human sleep schedules are guided by 24-hour cycles. These cycles don t just guide when we fall asleep and rise. They also affect our watchfulness, heart rate and more. Many of us don t get as much sleep as we should. We might stay up late talking to friends or concentrating on our phones. And sometimes we have to wake up too early for school or work. But in a perfect world, humans would lie down for an average eight hours of shut-eye per night.
However, this is not so for other animals, which have bizarre ways of sleeping.
Some creatures have adapted to getting by on much shorter sleep. Northern elephant seals(北象海豹), for instance, sleep an average of two hours per day for less than 20 minutes at a time while at the deep sea. They dive deep to avoid getting eaten in their sleep. A kind of penguin takes sleeping to another extreme. They nod off thousands of times each day for only seconds at a time. This allows them to stay watchful around the clock to protect their babies from hunters.
Other animals have developed to multitask in their sleep. A kind of ocean-crossing bird can sleep while they fly above the waves for months. Reindeer(驯鹿), meanwhile, can sleep while eating so they get enough food during the Arctic s short summer months.
Still, human sleep patterns are pretty extreme compared with those of our closest relatives. Other primates(灵长类动物)sleep nine to fifteen hours each day. Humans now may be able to get by on less sleep because living on the ground—rather than in trees—requires more time awake to watch for hunters. Plus, a big part of human survival is learning new skills and making social connections. All that learning and socializing cuts into sleep time.
24.Why does the author mention 24-hour cycles at first
A. To explain the importance of sleep.

A. Primates have a reason to sleep longer.
B. Various reasons result in less human sleep.
C. Social life takes up much of human sleep time.
D. Sleep time plays a big role in human survival.

The Feast of the Seven Fishes is an Italian-American tradition that dates back to an immigration(移民)wave in the 1900s. The Italian American tradition of the “Feast of the Seven Fishes” has appeared in movies and recently in the hit show The Bear. But talking of the origin, you ll get many different answers. The Feast of the Seven Fishes is a dear tradition to many Italian Americans who enjoy at least seven different seafood dishes on Christmas Eve.
A vast majority of Italian immigrants to the United States were from rural Southern Italy at the turn of the 19th century. They came to America because there were jobs from building railroads to skyscrapers. Friends and families found success and brought their loved ones to the U.S. Some say fish was chosen for the Feast because it was plentiful for impoverished families in Southern Italy. Others say the sea represented Italian Americans connection between their old and new homes.
Writer and director Robert Tinnell made a comic in 2004 about his experience with the Feast of the Seven Fishes, which he later made into a 2019 movie. Growing up in North Central West Virginia, he fondly remembers his great grandmother organizing the Feast. After she died, his grandfather and other men in the family took over. That particular manly activity is something that the first Italian immigrants would have also performed out of necessity: men came to America first, without their wives and daughters.
However, knowledge about where to shop, when to prepare, how to cook, the history behind the meal and family traditions soon became the responsibility of mothers to pass down to their daughters, says Di Giovine, a professor at West Chester University of Pennsylvania. They are also likely the ones who have the final say in making changes to recipes. Over time, families often adjust the menu to make things easier, cheaper, more abundant, and more accommodating of dietary restrictions.
28.What do we know about the Feast of the Seven Fishes
A. It relates to a story of Italians. B. It s made up of seven fishes.

C. A Cookery Book D. A Special Celebration

Music is not just a set of sounds and rhythms. Its influence on the brain is much deeper than any other human experience. Keep on reading to know all those amazing power of music.
A recent study suggests that preterm (早产的) babies appear to experience less pain and feed more when listening to music. Experts led by Dr. Manoj Kumar of the University of Alberta, Canada, found that music had a beneficial effect on reducing pain for preterm babies experiencing painful medical tests. It also appeared to benefit full-term babies during operations.
Many people experiencing brain damage have speech and movement-related problems. Music can help recover from brain injuries. As a different and effective treatment, doctors often advise such patients to listen to good music to improve the parts of the brain responsible for these two functions. When people with neurological (神经的) disorders hear a musical beat, it helps them to regain a balanced walk.
Though music cannot make deafness disappear, it really can stave off the loss of hearing. There was an experiment involving 163 people where 74 were musicians. Participants were asked to pass some listening tests. Musicians heard the sounds better than non-musicians, and this difference gets clearer with age. This means that a 70-year-old musician hears better than a 50-year-old non-musician, even in a noisy environment.
Besides, music mends a broken heart. It is not about a thrown-away love, but about a heart attack. The matter is that music can help people recover from a heart attack or heart operation by reducing blood pressure, slowing down the heartbeat rate, and reducing anxiety. Listening to the quality music produces positive emotions, improves the movement of blood, and expands blood vessels, thus, promoting quick recovery of the whole cardiovascular (心血管的) system.
32.How does music affect preterm babies
A. It helps reduce their pain.
B. It helps develop their potential in music.
C. It helps improve their hearing systems.
D. It helps repair their neurological systems.
33.What does the underlined phrase “ stave off” in paragraph 4 mean
A. lead to. B. increase.
C. prevent. D. break into.
34.Why can music mend a broken heart
A. It has a positive effect on human body systems work.
B. It can help people prevent diseases caused by anxiety.
C. It helps make a person feel optimistic about life.
D. It can help patients recover in a slow way.
35.What may be the best title for the text
A. Who can benefit from music
B. The best time to listen to music
C. The way to choose quality music
D. How music affects our mind and body

Alex loved the school garden more than anything. Every day, Alex would rush to the garden right after class. The garden was usually filled with busy bees and butterflies.
But today, something was wrong. Alex noticed that the garden was quiet. There were no bees buzzing (发出嗡嗡声) around the flowers. There were no butterflies dancing in the air either. "Where did everyone go " Alex wondered. Ms. Green, the kind teacher who took care of the garden, noticed Alex s worried face. She gently asked, "What s wrong, Alex "
Alex said, "The bees and butterflies are gone! The garden doesn t feel happy without their buzz." Ms. Green nodded slowly and said, "You re right, Alex. The garden does feel a little empty without them. They help the flowers make fruits and seeds (种子). Without them, the garden wouldn t be so colorful." Alex listened carefully and wanted to do something to help the garden.
Ms. Green suggested finding out why the bees and butterflies were gone. Together, they went to the school library. They discovered that bees and butterflies need flowers with sweet nectar (花蜜) and safe places to build nests (巢). With this in mind, they decided to plant more nectar-rich flowers and create a safe space where the insects could rest and make their homes.
The next day, Alex and Ms. Green started their project. Ms. Green showed Alex how to prepare the soil for the new flowers. Alex carefully dug small holes and gently placed the seeds and small plants in them. They planted bright sunflowers, sweet-smelling lavender and colorful zinnias. Bees and butterflies love those flowers!
Then, they started working on making a bee house and a butterfly house. Ms. Green brought some pieces of wood and showed Alex how to build a small wooden house. They made small holes for the bees to get into and comfortable places for the butterflies to rest. The garden was starting to look like a welcoming place for the insects.

Good morning, everyone!
I am Li Hua, I feel greatly honored to deliver a speech here, whose topic is “The power of music”.
Two years ago, I didn t do well in the Academic Test for the Junior High School Students, for which I felt rather depressed and even lost confidence in myself. Those days, I listened to some of my favorite songs, which brought great happiness to me and made me stronger in mind. Since then, I have made up my mind to study harder.
As far as I m concerned, the music plays an important part in my life. Not only can it help me feel relaxed, but it can also make me more determined. Have you ever heard a piece of music and remembered an important time in your life
That s all! Thank you for listening.
A few weeks later, Alex ran to the garden eagerly. His heart beat fast with excitement. As he got closer to the garden, he heard a familiar sound. It was a soft buzzing sound. Alex looked around and smiled widely. The bees were back! They were flying from flower to flower, collecting nectar. The butterflies were back, too! They danced among the flowers. The garden was alive again. Alex saw a butterfly land on the sunflower that Ms. Green and he had planted together. It was a beautiful sight!
Alex rushed to Ms. Green and told her the wonderful news. Ms. Green smiled warmly. “I knew they would come back if we made the garden a safe and welcoming place for them.” Alex and Ms. Green went to the garden, sat on a seat and watched the bees and butterflies. They felt a great sense of pride and happiness. Alex realized that even a small action can make a big difference in the world. By helping the bees and butterflies, they had made the whole garden lively again.
