W: Good evening! This is City Update. The city council has approved the Riverside Project and has even added $2 million to protect the old markets in the downtown area. Work will begin next month. The first steps will include making wider walking areas and installing solar-powered street lights. However, there are still some problems. Although the money will cover 80% of the costs, local stores are worried that long-term road work will keep customers away. To help these businesses, the city will set up temporary market stands in nearby parks and provide free bus service during rush hours. Environmental groups are not satisfied because the plan didn’t add more bike paths. But in a surprise move, yesterday’s updated plan added a 5-kilometer bike path along the river — on the condition that local people can raise $500,000 by October. This special condition has led to strong opinions and lively discussions at recent public meetings. On the positive side, the project will create more than 300 jobs, especially for people with experience in construction. Training programs will start next week at the local training school.
