To the dynamic beat of Aretha Franklin’s songs, families sit in the crowd at the hall of the Manilla School. They are waiting, eager for the moment when students will participate in a one-of-a-kind programme called Spark.
The meeting will pair students with volunteer apprentice (学徒) teachers. Lawyers, hair stylists, and software developers will meet up with students who have selected their occupations as the ones they would most like to learn about. Spark apprenticeships provide workplace experiences that bring economically disadvantaged teens into contact with a world they have probably only imagined.
Nationally, some 30 percent of US high school students drop out. While improved curricula (课程), better teaching, and modern equipment may be part of the solution, “you have to have the relevance,” says Mr Balme of his six-year-old Spark programme.
The gap between those worlds—one of limited expectations and hardship, the other of success and prosperity (繁荣)—hit Balme one day when he was volunteering as a science teacher at a public school in Philadelphia. He was also studying at the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania.
The public school was in bad shape, with a high dropout rate. While walking back to Wharton, Balme realised he was “seeing all the resources, and yet these kids had no idea what was right there all around them”. That’s when everything fell into place. The problem and the solution were right next to each other. In 2004, he and Melia Dicker founded Spark.
Apprenticeships are “not rocket science,” says Holly Depatie, Spark board chair. But other coaching programmes, such as Boys and Girls Clubs of America, while pairing youngsters with adults, don’t specifically target learning about jobs. So far, Spark has created more than 700 apprenticeships in the San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles.
( )24. How does Spark help the students?
A. By updating teaching equipment.
B. By offering hands-on experiences.
C. By financing young apprentices.
D. By improving school curricula.
( )25. What is the major drive for Balme to set up Spark?
A. The dropout rate of US high schools.
B. The prosperity in famous universities.
C. The expectation of disadvantaged teens.
D. The imbalance in educational resources.
( )26. Which word best describes Balme?
A. Reserved. B. Grateful.
C. Observant. D. Modest.
( )27. What does the author intend to do in the last paragraph?
A. To show Spark’s distinction.
B. To justify similar programmes.
C. To tackle Spark’s challenge.
D. To criticise current situations.

The person who set the course of my life was a school teacher named Marjorie Hurd. When I stepped off a ship in New York Harbor in 1949, I was a nine-year-old war refugee, who had lost his mother and was coming to live with the father he did not know. My mother Eleni Gatzoyiannis, had been imprisoned and shot for sending my sisters and me to freedom.
I was thirteen years old when I entered Chandler Junior High. Shortly after I arrived, I was told to select a hobby to pursue during “club hours”. The idea of hobbies and clubs made no sense to my immigrant ears, but I decided to follow the prettiest girl in my class. She led me into the presence of Ms Hurd, the school newspaper adviser and English teacher.
A tough woman with salt-and-pepper hair and determined eyes, Ms Hurd had no patience with lazy bones. She drilled us in grammar, assigned stories for us to read and discuss, and eventually taught us how to put out a newspaper. Her introduction to the literary wealth of Greece gave me a new perspective on my war-torn homeland, making me proud of my origins. Her efforts inspired me to understand the logic and structure of the English language. Owing to her inspiration, during my next twenty-five years, I became a journalist by profession.
Ms Hurd retired at the age of 62. By then, she had taught for a total of 41 years. Even after her retirement, she continually made a project of unwilling students in whom she spied a spark of potential. The students were mainly from the most troubled homes, yet she alternately bullied and charmed them with her own special brand of tough love, until the spark caught fire.
Ms Hurd was the one who directed my grief and pain into writing. But for Ms Hurd, I wouldn’t have become a reporter. She was the one who sent me into journalism and indirectly caused all the good things that came after.
( )28. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 most probably mean?
A. Hobbies and clubs did not interest the author.
B. The author turned a deaf ear to joining clubs.
C. Hobbies and clubs were inaccessible to immigrants like the author.
D. The author had no idea what hobbies and clubs were all about.
( )29. Which of the following caused the author to think of his homeland differently?
A. Stepping on the American soil for the first time.
B. Being exposed to Greek literary works.
C. Her mother’s miserable death.
D. Following the prettiest girl in his class.
( )30. It can be inferred from Paragraph 4 that .
A. Ms Hurd employed a unique way to handle the unwilling students
B. Ms Hurd’s contribution was recognised across the nation
C. students from troubled homes preferred Ms Hurd’s teaching style
D. the students Ms Hurd taught were all finally fired
( )31. What is the text mainly about?
A. How the author became a journalist.
B. The importance of inspiration in one’s life.
C. The teacher who shaped the author’s life.
D. Factors contributing to a successful career.

The Forbidden City is well-known for being full of Chinese cultural and historical relics. But Masters in the Forbidden City (《我在故宫修文物》) does not just focus on the stories of the past.
Instead, the documentary movie, which came out in Chinese cinemas, focuses on ordinary people—the restorers (修复者) of relics and antiquities.
The stories are told at a slow and relaxed pace, reflecting the restorers’ work. Restoration of cultural relics and antiques can be time-consuming, and sometimes boring. Yet these restorers’ patience and peace of mind are especially precious in a society where everything is changing so fast.
“If you choose this job, you have to spend hours of work sitting on a chair. You need to be quiet and get used to being quiet,”says Wang Jin, an ancient clock repair expert.
A touching part of the documentary is the spirit of craftsmanship (工艺) in the restorers. “Years of humdrum work requires not only skills, but also faith and spirit,” China Daily commented. “Looking for preciseness and perfection, devoting yourself to work, patience, endurance (忍耐力), loneliness…all these qualities come from the craftsman spirit.”
But unlike the popular idea of serious experts who sit around being serious, the documentary shows off the enthusiasm of the restorers. They play their guitars and make jokes about each other after a long day of restoration work.
One scene that has been very popular with Internet users features a young female restorer riding a bicycle through the empty Forbidden City on a Monday. While she is doing this, a narrator says, “The last person to do this was Puyi, the last emperor of the Qing Dynasty.”
Masters in the Forbidden City has proved many people’s ideas about antique restorers wrong, allowing them to realise that they are not old, dull professors, but people in their 40s, 30s and even 20s who can be quite pleasing to the eye.
( )32. According to the text, what’s the main purpose of the documentary Masters in the Forbidden City?
A. To show people how antiques are restored.
B. To display relics seldom seen by ordinary people.
C. To draw attention to Chinese antique restorers’ lives.
D. To praise the craftsmanship of Chinese antique restorers.
( )33. According to Wang Jin,we can learn that .
A. he often gets tired with his work
B. there is no need to do restoration work fast
C. antique restorers need to be patient and peaceful
D. it takes years of hard work to adapt to antique restoration
( )34. The underlined word “humdrum” probably means .
A. boring B. different
C. relaxing D. unusual
( )35. The bicycle-riding scene in the documentary is used to .
A. remind the audience of the last Qing emperor
B. show the strange hobbies of young antique restorers
C. encourage the young to consider a career in antique restoration in the future
D. show that the documentary breaks from the old, dull image of antique restorers

After 21 years of marriage, my wife wanted me to take another woman out to dinner and a movie. It’s hard to imagine that the other woman was my mother, who has been living alone for 19 years, but I am too busy to visit her often. That night I called to invite her to go out for dinner and a movie.
“What’s wrong? Are you well?” she asked. My mother always doubts that a late night call is a sign of bad news.
“It would be pleasant to spend some time with you,” I responded.
As I drove over to pick her up, I noticed that she seemed to be nervous about our date. But she smiled from a face that was as beautiful as an angel’s. “I told my friends that I was going to go out with my son, and they were impressed,” she said.
We went to a restaurant that was very nice and comfortable. My mother took my arm as if she were the First Lady. After we sat down, I had to read the menu. Her eyes could only read large print. I saw mum sitting there looking at me with a smile on her lips.
“I used to have to read the menu when you were small,” she said. “Then it’s time to let me return the favour,” I responded.
During the dinner, we had an agreeable conversation—nothing special but catching up on recent events. We talked so much that we missed the movie. As we arrived at her house later, she said, “I’ll go out with you again, but only if you let me invite you.” I agreed.

B. The old lady was the man’s father’s neighbour.
C. The old lady looked after the man as he was two.
My mum has always told my sister and me to help others. One day last week, I was walking back to my home and I passed by an old lady who seemed to be in trouble. I turned back and asked if she was okay. She explained that she was sick and had to struggle to walk with her shopping bags. I offered to carry her things and walked her back home, but she refused because she didn’t want to give me any trouble. I told her it didn’t matter and her home was on my way home. It was a white lie. As I walked with her she talked with me and introduced herself.
I in turn told her my name. She asked if I knew Ray Robert. I was shocked and said yes, that was my dad. It turned out that this lady was my dad’s neighbour who had looked after my dad and his sisters when their mother died thirty years ago. My dad had often spoken of her, but I had never met her as she had moved away with her family. It was a lovely moment for both of us. When I got home and told my dad about the incident, it made him cry. I was so moved. I am glad that my small active kindness ended in a chance meeting that meant so much to the two people.

( A )34. The underlined word “humdrum” probably means .
A. boring B. different
C. relaxing D. unusual
根据上文“If you choose this job, you have to spend hours of work sitting on a chair. You need to be quiet and get used to being quiet…”

56. necessarily
57. devoted
58. If/When
59. be remembered
60. on
61. objectives
62. Working

63. improves/will improve
64. it
分析句子结构可知,此空格所在句的真正主语为“to think positively and feel good overall”,应用it作形式主语。

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Paragraph 1:
When I got home, my wife shared her story about her mum who passed away years ago. She said when she was young, she was very naughty, and her mother often punished her for her wrong deeds. Later when she grew up she became aware of her mother’s love. But her mother died of lung cancer and she never had a chance to show her gratitude. At that moment I realise the importance of saying “love” to our beloved ones in time.
Paragraph 2:
Several days later, I received my mother’s invitation. We went out for a movie. You can’t imagine how happy we were that day. We discussed the movie, laughed and even planned the next date. On the way home, I held my mother’s hand, saying to her gently, “Nothing is more valuable than the love of you in the world. Believe me, your dear son will return the favour. Mum, I love you.” We looked at each other with tears rolling down.
