When I walk down the streets of Beijing during the summer, I often find it difficult to get where I'm going because of all the umbrellas in my way. In China, women carry umbrellas when it's not raining. I wondered the purpose.
I find that there are two reasons for this. First, it protects people from the sun's rays. Many Chinese cities get hot in the summer. People sometimes carry umbrellas to stay cool. The second reason is that blocking the sun helps Chinese people's skin stay pale. In China, pale white skin is considered to be more beautiful than tanned(晒成棕褐色的)skin.
Women in the US, on the other hand, actually prefer to be tanned. It's considered more beautiful there. Some people will lie outdoors in the sun for hours to get a tan. But doing this too much can be dangerous, as the sun's rays are bad for skin.
And as it turns out, China isn't the only place where women carry umbrellas during the summer. Women in Greece are also known to carry umbrellas to protect themselves from the sun. So there you have it— umbrellas aren't just for rainy days, although I don't think I'm going to start carrying one anytime soon.
( )51. What gets in the way when the writer walks down the street in Beijing
A. The sun's rays. B. Trees. C. Umbrellas.
( )52. Which picture shows the meaning of the underlined phrase"blocking the sun"
( )53. Why do women in China carry umbrellas on sunny days
a. To keep skin pale. B. To get tanned skin. C. To keep off the sun.

( )54. Which of the following is TRUE
A. American women like to stay in the room during the summer.
B. Chinese women and Greece women carry umbrellas on sunny days.
C. American women and Chinese women have the same skin color preference.
( )55. Which is the BEST title for the passage
A. Umbrellas in the Way

What keeps volcanoes from erupting(喷发) A new study found that an underground"lid(盖子)”does this job at the supervolcano beneath Yellowstone National Park in the western US. The Yellowstone supervolcano is one of the few that can have"supereruptions", said the US Geological Survey(美国地质调查局). The ash from these eruptions can go 30 to 50 kilometers into the sky, three to five times as high as most planes fly.
Volcanoes erupt when hot, melted rock called magma(岩浆), gets to Earth's surface. How does magma form Deep inside Earth, big rock plates move. This movement makes solid rock
melt into magma. Magma is lighter than solid rock, so it moves up slowly. As it goes up, small gas bubbles form inside it. If the magma is thin, it flows out easily. We call this lava. But if the magma is thick, the gas bubbles get trapped. This makes pressure build up more and more, and sometimes, it causes an explosion.
The"lid" at Yellowstone is made of magma that is 3.5 to 4 km below the northeastern part of the Yellowstone caldera(火山口). This magma cap has tiny holes that let out some of the gas from time to time, keeping the pressure under control.
Yellowstone probably won't have a big eruption for thousands of years. But this study still helps us know what the volcano might do later. Brandon Schmandt,a lead scientist, said the finding is also useful——like using geothermal energy and controlling CO .
( )56. What does the"lid" at Yellowstone do
A. Makes magma thicker.
B. Keeps the pressure of magma under control.
C. Stops plate movement inside Earth.
( )57. When does a volcano erupt
A. When magma(hot melted rock) reaches Earth's surface.
B. When the"lid" has no tiny holes.
C. When plate movement stops.
( )58. Why do gas bubbles cause pressure to build up sometimes
A. Because the magma is too light.
B. Because the magma is thick and traps the bubbles.
C. Because the"lid" lets out too much gas.
( )59. What is actually the"lid" at the Yellowstone supervolcano
A. A big gas bubble. B. A huge solid rock. C. A thick layer of magma.
( )60. According to Brandon Schmandt, what is the importance of the finding
A. Understanding Earth's plate movement.
B. Helping people make use of the geothermal energy.
C. Studying the influence of volcanic activity on the environment.

Chinstrap penguins in Antarctica get their name from the thin black line under their chins, which looks like a strap(带子) holding on a black hat. Like other penguins, they spend much of their time in the water, catching fish to eat. But when the time comes to raise their young, they return to land.
___71___ The eggs are often laid in nests made of small rocks to keep the eggs from freezing. One parent takes care of the nest for long periods of time, while the other goes out for food.
The parent must always remain alert(警惕的). Birds called brown skuas target the eggs and young penguins of careless parents.___72___ So chinstrap penguins have found an unusual way of solving the problem.
In a new study, scientists report that chinstrap penguins take thousands of tiny naps(打盹)each day. Each nap—or"microsleep"——lasts only about 4 seconds.___ 73___
The scientists became curious about whether the penguins were sleeping after one scientist noticed that the chinstrap parents kept blinking their eyes. So the scientist and his team placed tiny electrical devices(电器设备)on the heads of 14 chinstrap penguins. ___74___ At the same time, the scientists recorded the birds on video.11 days of studying the penguins showed that the tired parents were actually sleeping——very often, and for very short time periods.
___75___ But the penguins are able to keep the pattern up for weeks, which allows them to protect their nests, eggs and babies.
A. Raising young penguins is a challenge.
B. They get a daily total of about 11 hours of sleep.
C. The penguins are always blinking their eyes open and shut.
D. But it's hard to stay alert and protect a nest 24 hours a day.
E. They allowed the scientists to see the brain activity of the penguins.
F. It's not clear if the microsleeps allow the penguins to actually feel relaxed.

A.完成图表。根据短文内容,完成图表中所缺信息。(共5小题;每小题1分,计5分)
Beep! Beep! Beep! The barcode technology makes it faster and easier to buy things in stores. It's very common that you have seen the black-and-white stripe pattern(条形码)on product packaging. It's a great invention.
On a Sunday afternoon in 1971, an IBM engineer named George Laurer came up with a code(代码)that could be printed on food packages. Based on this code,a complete code system——Universal Product Code——came into being later. The system was used by many companies from 1973. Before this, shopkeepers had to record prices by hand, which took much time and energy.
Actually,a barcode is really a simple idea: show each product's information in different numbers(just like the ID card number for the product), then include these numbers into a code and print it for computers to read. It has turned out to be a really great invention. Today, barcodes are scanned over 6 billion times every day and used by 2 million companies worldwide.
What information does a barcode carry Where the product comes from, its price, production date... you name it. It can also help stores always know about their products. For example, if there are 10 boxes of milk and a customer buys one, it will be recorded so that the store owner knows there are 9 boxes left on the shelf. In the 1980s, libraries started using barcodes to follow their books in this way.
"Its invention made the digitization(数字化)in the control of the products in stores possible," Jose Maria Bonmati from AECOC,a Spanish business organization said.
Inspired by it, the more developed codes have been invented later, such as QR codes. QR codes can hold more information. They can tell customers what materials are used in a product or if the product is suitable for certain people. This keeps providing the customers with greater trust in the products they will buy.
B.任务型阅读。根据短文内容,按要求回答问题。(共5小题;每小题2分,计10分)
From a seed that is smaller than a pea grows the tallest of trees. The coast redwood is the largest giant among North America's trees.
Redwoods are most special for two reasons. The first is their size. Imagine standing next to a tree that is the height of a 30-story building. The second is their age. Redwoods commonly make it to 600 years or so. It has been found that some trees are more than 2000 years old.
To find a coast redwood, you have to go to Oregon or California. A coastline about 450miles long and up to 35 miles wide is home to the redwoods. Coast redwoods don't grow anywhere else in the world, because the coast of the Pacific Ocean provides a special environment for the redwoods. Cool, moist(湿润的)air comes off the ocean and keeps the trees moist all year round, which is important because almost all of the area's rain falls between October and May. During the dry summer months, the trees depend on moisture from the thick fog that often hangs over the coast.
Redwoods have their own protection systems. Most of redwoods' branches and leaves are high up on the tree. This keeps them safe from forest fires. Also, the bark(树皮)of a redwood is as much as 12 inches thick. The thick covering protects the lower part of the tree from fire damage. Besides, redwoods are safe from insect damage(虫害)because the wood contains a bitter-tasting chemical called tannin.
If you ever get a chance, visit a redwood forest, and imagine who might camp there a thousand years ago. Look upward and just imagine how high the trees might grow if we protect them.
81. What is the largest giant among North America's trees
82. What are redwoods most special for
83. Where can you find a coast redwood
84. What keeps the trees moist all year round
85. What are the redwoods' protection systems
