Don’t call Madison Stewart an environmentalist. She sees herself simply as an individual taking action in defense of something she loves that’s in need of protection.
Despite her youth, the 24-year-old is an undersea veteran (老手). She grew up sailing around the Great Barrier Reef on her parents’ boat and spent her early life free diving while
试卷第 4 页,共 13 页
patiently waiting for the day when she could get her scuba diving (水肺潜水) certification, aged 12. Already impressed by sharks, Madison was now pleased to be able to observe them in their own world. “I got to know the sharks...I could recognize them by sight,” Madison says. “Other people had dogs around them growing up. I had sharks.”
But within a couple of years, she saw a great reduction in shark numbers on the reef. “One day I went in the water and couldn’t find my sharks anywhere, sharks I’d spent my childhood
with,” she says. “They’d been caught and killed.” It was a great moment for Madison.
She left school at 14 to be homeschooled so she could spend more time in the ocean. She taught herself to shoot underwater video to document sharks in their own world and share her
sense of wonder with others. She launched a YouTube channel and built a huge following for her documentaries where she focuses on issues like inadequate protection for some shark species and the global shark fin (鳍) industry.
In 2014 Madison was the subject of the encouraging documentary Shark Girl, which
introduced her to a global audience. In 2017 she appeared as an “Ocean Guardian” in the
documentary Blue that explored a lot of threats to the world’s marine environments, including the damaging effect of the global shark fishery. The film encourages viewers to get involved and
includes practical steps to guide them to do so. It shows Madison’s philosophy that the power of the individual to make a difference by their own direct action should never be underestimated.

A .She went sailing often. B .She went boating alone.
C .She practised free diving. D .She protected the Great Barrier Reef.

Natural disasters are nature’s anger, which can upset even the most developed countries and make them into ruins. There is nothing we can do to stop such disasters happening. In that case it is quite possible that we are all short of electricity, water, food, etc. The basic necessities to be
stored for times of disasters are explained below.
Drinking water is a must for any human to survive. It has to be stored based on the number of people in the household. A normal human would consume a gallon of water a day. Food is an important requirement. Especially in times of disasters, our bodies would be weak. Rich food is
very important in such times of danger. Food like dry fruits would be ideal as they last long and give us energy. A First Aid Kit and basic medicines are a must and do remember to store some of them. Certain basic things such as scissors and soaps would be handy. It is a good idea to have a radio to be updated with the ongoing news.
An Earthquake preparedness Kit would be of great help in fighting against an earthquake in the places where earthquakes take place very often. However, this can happen anywhere in the
world so it is a must and should be well equipped in advance. There are wind storms that can leave behind a trail of destruction. The US has suffered from many tornadoes Taking steps in advance to handle such unforeseen circumstances (情况) is a must. It is a good idea to plan an ideal place
which would be helpful in protecting you and your family from the storm. Floods and other
natural disasters probably happen unexpectedly someday, so we need to make preparations for them.
Do take steps in advance. Being well prepared is the only way that would help us recover from such disasters.
28 .From the first paragraph we can learn that natural disasters .
A .can’t be prevented by man B .can be controlled by humans
C .can take place more often D .will ruin the earth someday

B .Planning a safe place for all your family to stay at.
C .Storing enough water for you and your family.

Everyone looks forward to progress, whether in one’s personal life or in the general society. Progress must lead to a better life and a better way of doing things. All these, however, remain
true only in so far as people want to accept technology and move forward by finding new and more efficient (高效的) ways of doing things.
However, at the back of the minds of many people, especially those who miss the “good old days”, efficiency comes with a price. When communication becomes more efficient, people are
able to contact one another no matter where they are and at whatever time they wish to. The click of a button allows people miles apart to talk or see each other without even leaving their homes. With the communication gadgets, such as mobile phones and tablets, people often do not take the efforts to visit one another personally.
With efficiency also comes mass production. Factories have improved efficiency because many tasks are left to machines. However, with the improvements in efficiency also comes the loss of the personal touch when making these products. For example, many handicrafts (手工艺品) are now produced in a factory. Mass production lowers the quality of the handicraft and it is difficult to find unique designs on each item.
However, progress has allowed tradition to keep up. It is only with progress and the
invention of new technology that many old products can be brought back to their old state. New
试卷第 7 页,共 13 页
technology is required for old products to stay old.
It is people’s attitude towards progress that causes the type of influence that technology has on society. Technology is flexible. There is no fixed way of making use of it. Everything depends on people’s attitude. When we accept progress and adapt it to suit our needs, a new “past” is
created.
32 .What does the underlined word “gadgets” in Paragraph 2 mean
A .Skills. B .Messages. C .Devices. D .Barriers.
33 .What is Paragraph 3 mainly about
A .The process of mass production.
B .The unique designs of handicrafts.
C .The disadvantages of mass production.
D .The function of technology in mass production.
34 .What can be learned about technology from Paragraph 4
A .It can sometimes slow social progress. B .It can destroy old traditions.
C .It can be used to protect old products. D .It can be used to correct mistakes.
35 .What can be concluded from the last paragraph
A .Technology can create a new past.
B .Progress can suit the needs of daily life.
C .People review the past with great regret.
D .People’s attitude decides the use of technology.

Finding motivation to exercise can be the greatest challenge in working out. 36 One way of achieving this could be opting for types of exercise that fit our personality.
We found that our personality can influence how we engage with exercise. 37 .
When we design and recommend physical activity programs, understanding personality factors is very important. This is because it helps determine how successful the program will be, and
whether people will stick with it and become fitter.
试卷第 8 页,共 13 页
38 . This shapes our behaviors and how we interact with the world around us.
Therefore, it makes sense that personality would affect how we react to different levels of exercise intensity. For example, people scoring high on extraversion (外向) enjoyed high intensity sessions with others around, including team sports. On the contrary, people scoring high on neuroticism
(神经质) preferred private workouts.
The most important part about exercising is finding something we enjoy and not being discouraged if we don’t immediately find it. It’s OK if we don’t enjoy a particular session.
39 .
We hope that if people can find physical activities that they enjoy, they will more readily choose to do them. After all, we don’t have to force dogs to go for a walk: Being so physically
inactive that we start to feel miserable might be a peculiarly human thing to do. 40 . But for some reason, many of us humans seem poor at picking up on these messages it is sending to our brain.
A .We can try something else.
B .Our brains work differently.
C .Doing exercise is essential for our health.
D .But why not try other different workouts instead
E .But what if working out could be more enjoyable

Deep in the forest, my husband and I had fun climbing over and crawling under the downed trees that blocked the dirt path before us. It was May, yet we walked up a snow-covered hill.
When we noticed our jeans were wet up to our knees, it did not dampen our spirits Not once did we say, “Let’s turn around.” This was our vacation, and we were on an adventure. Little did we know this was the beginning of many more surprises.
The trail was marked as an easy one-kilometer like yet we were already walking a long
distance. Our light-heartedness stopped when we came out into a clearing and saw a parking lot
without our rental car in it. As my eyes scanned the surroundings, nothing looked familiar. My
heart raced. I realized we were lost in a national park that did not officially open for another week.
Usually, I am the calm one in the relationship, but my husband surprised me with his calmness. This did not comfort me; in fact, it heightened my fear. As we walked, I asked my husband to call for help, but there was no cell-phone signal in this isolated(偏僻的)area.
It was awfully quiet except for our footsteps hitting the road, and my heavy breathing. My husband suggested we conserve energy and walk slower. With each step on the road, my feet and thighs hurt while my mind raced with thoughts about people who got lost in the Canadian woods for days.
试卷第 12 页,共 13 页
My vision sharpened. I noticed everything around me: the trees, rocks and snow. I thought we could eat the snow on the ground in case we needed water. For the first time in my life, I was ready and willing to get a ride, but we did not meet with a single car on the road. Silently, I prayed multiple times. We focused on each other, made joint decisions and connected through gratitude. We managed to stay on the main road and walked straight on.
Paragraph 1:
My husband suddenly spotted a small building on a hill in the distance.
_______________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
Just then, a friendly woman appeared, saying, “Hello. ”
