Every December, dictionaries worldwide pick their Words of the Year — terms (术语) that show how people talked and understood the world that year. In 2025,
these chosen words are quite special. They cover topics like AI and popular but
meaningless online content. Here are some 2025 Words of the Year from different dictionaries.
· Oxford word of the year: Rage bait
If you’ve spent the year being fooled into feeling angry by a headline, video, or image that is designed on purpose to ruin your mood, congratulations — you’ve been rage baited. Oxford’s pick reflects the rise of content designed to annoy or divide
people. In other words: the Internet’s favourite thing.
· Macquarie Dictionary word of the year: AI slop
Slightly more abstract, but still perfect-fitting, Australia’s Macquarie Dictionary chose a term that only could have been created in 2025. “AI slop” describes
generative-AI output that feels lazy, empty, or just wrong. If you clicked on that video of cats dancing, you’ve been a victim of AI slop.
· Cambridge Dictionary word of the year: Parasocial
Cambridge went with a word that’s been slowly building up for years:
“parasocial.” Originally an academic term, it now broadly describes the one-sided
relationships we form with creators, celebrities, and influencers. It’s the perfect
description for an era where you know your favourite YouTuber’s morning routine, or the personal details of a TikToker’s breakup, but they don’t know you exist.
· Dictionary. com word of the year: 67
Honestly, we still don’t know what this means, but Dictionary. com did
something different this year with “67,” a number that took on new meaning in 2025. While its specific meaning is context-dependent — originally coming from TikTok — this choice shows that language has developed far beyond just letters.
21 .Which of the following is an example of“rage bait”
A .A video of cute cats dancing online. B .A headline designed to make readers angry.
C.An AI-written story with no real meaning. D.A number that becomes popular on TikTok.
22 .Which Word of the Year has an uncertain but context-based meaning
A .Rage bait B .AI slop C .Parasocial D .67
23 .What is unusual about the 2025 Words of the Year
A.They focus on traditional culture. B.They are all from daily communication.
C .They connect with AI and online content. D .They are created by major dictionaries.

Isatou Ceesay was born in 1972 in a small village in Gambia Africa. As a
teenager, Ceesay was forced to drop out of school because of poverty. She carried
some goods with many girls like her to sell in the market to raise herself. At that time, the plastic bags, being strong and light, became popular in Gambia. The problem was that people did not reuse the bags and simply threw them behind their homes. Over
time, the houses were surrounded by trash.
Ceesay lived in such an environment for many years. She kept learning from the surrounding environment and planned to take action to change. In 1997, she started a recycling movement called One Plastic Bag in Gambia. She educated women in
Gambia to recycle plastic waste into income for themselves. In the beginning, the
movement had a mission to educate their village colleagues about the need to reuse
garbage and recycle plastic waste, rather than letting the garbage increase behind their homes.
Over time, the movement became big and able to support and provide income
for women around. It was also able to greatly reduce plastic waste in Gambia. But the work of collecting trash turned to be taxing. During the rainy season, plastic waste
became wet and difficult to take, and after that it still took patience to dry it before it could be processed.
Ceesay said, “As a habit, people are used to pouring their garbage behind their houses, and because it is not visible, they forget it. But the bad effects again knock on your door very quickly-dirty air, various diseases and so on. Of course, if one man’s house is clean but his neighbor’s is not, then the man is also not healthy.”
For 17 years, Ceesay has contributed to one of the most important problems about the plastic waste. In 2012, she got the TIAW Difference Maker Award in
Washington, D.C., United States. Her story was written into a book, which inspires many others to join or become makers of change in their own communities.
24 .What can be learned about young Ceesay from Paragraph 1
A .She gave up the chance of going to school.
B .She had many friends good at doing business.
C .She sold strong and light plastic bags to support herself
D .She lived in an environment heavily polluted by plastic waste.
25 .What can we infer about Ceesay’s recycling movement
A .It aimed to make full use of natural resources to get rich.
B .It was hard to carry on because of the shortage of workers.
C .It benefited both people’s economic situation and the environment.
D .It taught the villagers to replace plastic bags with handmade ones.
26 .What does the underlined word “taxing” in Paragraph 3 mean
A .Challenging. B .Pleasant. C .Dangerous. D .Successful.
27 .What does Ceesay mainly intend to say in Paragraph 4
A .Bad habits are hard to remove once formed.
B .Garbage problems contribute greatly to climate change.
C .Valuing the relationship between neighbors is important.
D .Dealing with plastic waste is a shared responsibility in communities.

There was nearly a world without horses. At the end of the last ice age, warming temperatures turned the grasslands where horses roamed into swamps (沼泽地) and
forests. Humans hunted them heavily for meat. Wild horses did, in fact, go extinct in North America around 7,600-12,000 years ago. You could say that by stopping
hunting and starting to domesticate (驯养) them, humans saved horses.
Humans were forever changed by their horse partnership. Able to gallop at more than 64 kph and to convey heavy objects, horses altered the course of empires and
determined victors and losers in battle. They also transformed the way people could hunt, communicate, trade and even dress. Trousers spread only after horses were
domesticated, as an innovation for riding. The oldest surviving pairs, dating to 1300 BC, belonged to horsemen. A number of new books have come out looking at the horse’s impact on human history. David Chaffetz, a scholar of Asian history, focuses his deeply researched, elegantly written Raiders, Rulers and Traders on the interplay, a defining aspect of Chinese, Indian and Persian civilizations, between horse-borne
nomads (游牧民族) and settled people. He argues, “What we now call the Silk Road should more accurately be called the Horse Road, for it was the horse, and not silk,
that drew buyers and sellers together to form the first large-scale international trading routes.”
Superior horses and horsemanship continued to determine sweeping population movements. Mastery of mounts brought the Huns into Europe, the Arabs into Spain and the Turks into India and Anatolia. Horses also spread the vast Mongol armies
under Genghis Khan across nearly the whole of the Eurasian land mass.
A look at the “biotechnology” of the horse explains its usefulness. In terms of power, a horse packs more than ten times that of a human. People still use
“horsepower” as a way to quantify power. It is only in the past 100 years, since the
invention and spread of automobiles, that horses have become less essential to human civilization and people’s daily lives. However, as these books make clear, it would be unwise to set horses aside in people’s memories. They deserve enduring respect, for their presence changed the world.
28 .What caused the extinction of wild horses in North America
A .Habitat loss and failure to adapt. B .Urban expansion and domestication.
C.Overpopulation and natural enemies. D.Environmental changes and overhunting. 29 .Which of the following will David agree with according to his book
A .Horses were mainly raised and used by settled people.
B .Nomadic people benefited greatly from horse-related trade.
C .Horses were more crucial than silk in trade along ancient routes.
D .Horses were mainly used by settled people for long-distance trade.
30 .What is the author’s attitude to the historical role of horses
A .Critical. B .Admiring. C .Dismissive. D .Neutral.
31 .Which can serve as the best title of the text
A .Humans’ Impact on the Horse and Its Civilization Role
B .The Horse: A Forgotten Animal in Human History
C .The Horse: Shaping the Course of Human Civilization

If Mars were the popular kid in school, Venus (金星) would be the unwelcome one sitting in the corner, largely ignored. Venus has nearly the same mass and size as Earth, but being closer to the sun, it gets nearly twice as much heat from the sun.
However, instead of having a climate that is just a warmer version of Earth’s,
Venus’s surface and atmosphere are unbearable: clouds of sulphuric acid (硫酸)
blanket the planet, while at ground level, it is hot enough to melt lead. Despite this,
there is now a sign that Venus may harbour life. Jane Greaves at Cardiff University, UK, and her colleagues recently detected phosphine (磷化氢) in Venus’s atmosphere, with one potential explanation that it is the by-product of biology. That is because the only way this gas is made on Earth is in laboratories or by microbes (微生物).
Though this doesn’t mean it was produced by life on Venus, attempts to find
non-biological explanations for its presence have so far failed. Our best way of
confirming or rejecting the possibility of life on Venus is to go and have a proper
look. While Mars has been the focus of interplanetary (行星间的) exploration efforts lately, the phosphine discovery lets people look at Venus in a new light. As NASA
administrator Jim Bridenstine tweeted: “It’s time to prioritize Venus.”
In the months and years to come, computer simulations (模拟) will be used to
further study the possible chemistries ofthe atmosphere on Venus. More laboratory
experiments will be conducted to try to identify other ways the phosphine there could be produced. However, there is no guarantee that these efforts will reveal the true
nature of this substance on Venus. A newly-proposed strategy is to directly sample the atmosphere and surface of Venus. By doing so, we would be able to take direct
measurements of phosphine.
The discovery of phosphine in Venus’s atmosphere is a great accomplishment. The scientific efforts may be just what we need to finally refocus on this neglected world. Possibly, the quiet kid in the corner may get the last laugh.

Keep Sight of Dry Eye
Do your eyes feel uncomfortable or dry If so, you might have dry eye
syndrome (综合征) 36 It can affect the enjoyment of social activities and your ability to focus on your studies. But solutions for dry eyes do exist, so read on.
In the past, dry eye syndrome was mainly a condition experienced by older adults, but it now affects many young people as well. Dry eye often results from
overuse of computers or smartphones, which causes the user to blink (眨眼) less.
Since blinking helps keep our eyes wet, a lack (缺少) of it can lead to dry eye.
37 As a result, those who spend a lot of time indoors are particularly at risk. Finally, wearing a medical mask can cause dry eye, since breathing with a mask on can force air out through the top of the mask and into our eyes.
38 The first step toward prevention is cleanliness. When you wash your face, clean your eyes with a mild soap. Then, cover your eyes with a warm, wet cloth. Preventing dry eye also means avoiding tiredness in the eyes, so take frequent breaks when using your computer. While you’re on a computer break, focus on blinking,
making sure that you close your eyes fully on each blink. 39 Another way to prevent dry eye is to drink more water. For good overall health, experts advise
drinking 8 to 10 glasses of water per day, which will increase tear production.
If you suffer from dry eye syndrome, these steps can go a long way toward
making your eyes feel better. However, if the problem doesn’t go away, then it’s time to see a doctor 40
A .After all, your health is worth keeping an eye on.
B .Blinking can help protect the surface of your eyes.
C .This happens when you don’t produce enough tears.
D .Air-conditioning and fans also contribute to dry eye.
E .Limit screen time and take breaks from staring at screens.
F .Treatments for dry eyes can include eye exercises and eye drops.
G .All it takes is a few lifestyle changes to prevent and treat dry eye syndrome.

I have a black Jaguar. I’ve been driving it to and from work for three years. It looks still brand-new because I always clean and polish it until it shines brightly. But
its right door is marked by an ugly, noticeable dent (凹陷) which I’ve never bothered to fix. Whenever asked why, I will shake my head. Only I know it’s a reminder of an unforgettable afternoon.
It was a typical summer. After work, I was driving down a neighborhood street in my Jaguar, going a bit too fast. I was half-listening to the radio, half-watching for
kids rushing out from between parked cars, and I slowed down when I thought I saw something move. But as my car passed, no kids appeared. Instead, a brick crashed into the side of my door with a sickening thud (闷响) .
I braked hard and reversed to the spot where the brick had been thrown and then quickly jumped out of the car. There appeared a clear dent on my right door! My
blood almost boiled. Seeing a boy, no older than 10, with another brick in his hand, I frowned fiercely, eyes flashing with anger, and stormed to him, “What was that all
about ” my voice was tight and sharp. “My car is damaged. Look at this dent …”
“Please mister... Please, I’m sorry... I didn’t know what else to do,” his eyes
were filled with terror, a blood stain on his elbow, and he begged. “I’m sorry... No
one would stop. My sister fell out of her wheelchair — I can’t lift her up!” He pointed to a parked car, his voice breaking. Besides it, there was his sister, lying on the
ground, bleeding from fresh scrapes (擦伤) and cuts. Her wheelchair was tipped over nearby. “Would you please help me get her back into her wheelchair She’s hurt and she’s too heavy for me,” said the boy. Hearing this, I felt upset and the anger that had burned in my chest a moment ago vanished completely, replaced by a rush of shock and overwhelming guilt.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为 150 个左右;
I rushed over to the girl, knowing exactly what to do.

根据第一段“At the end of the last ice age, warming temperatures turned the grasslands where horses roamed into swamps (沼泽地) and forests. Humans hunted them heavily for meat. Wild horses did, in fact, go extinct in North America around 7,600-12,000 years ago.(在上个冰河时代末期,气温升高将马匹栖息的草原变成了沼泽和森林。人类为了获取肉类大量捕杀它们。事实上,野生马匹大约在 7600 到 12000 年前在北美灭绝了。)”可知,北美野生马灭绝的原因是环境变化和过度捕猎。故选 D 项。
29 .推理判断题。根据第三段“He argues, “What we now call the Silk Road should more
accurately be called the Horse Road, for it was the horse, and not silk, that drew buyers and sellers together to form the first large-scale international trading routes.”(他主张:“我们现在所说的丝绸之路应该更准确地称为马道,因为是马匹而非丝绸将买卖双方聚集在一起,形成了最初的大型国际贸易通道。”)”
根据最后一段“However, as these books make clear, it would be unwise to set horses aside in people’s memories. They deserve enduring respect, for their presence changed the world.(然而,正如这些书籍所明确的那样,将马匹从人们的记忆中搁置一旁是不明智的。它们值得长久的尊重,因为它们的存在改变了世界。)”可知,作者对马匹的历史作用持赞赏态度。故选 B 项。
31.主旨大意题。通读全文特别是最后一段“A look at the “biotechnology” of the horse explains its usefulness. In terms of power, a horse packs more than ten times that of a human. People still

people’s daily lives. However, as these books make clear, it would be unwise to set horses aside in people’s memories. They deserve enduring respect, for their presence changed the world.(审视马的“生物技术” ,便能明白其用途之广。
项“The Horse: Shaping the Course of Human Civilization(马:塑造人类文明的历程)”符合文意。故选 C 项。

Jane Greaves at Cardiff University, UK, and her colleagues
recently detected phosphine (磷化氢) in Venus’s atmosphere, with one potential explanation that it is the by-product of biology. That is because the only way this gas is made on Earth is in
laboratories or by microbes
根据第三段的“In the months and years to come, computer simulations (模拟) will be used to further study the possible chemistries ofthe atmosphere on Venus. More laboratory experiments will be conducted to try to identify other ways the phosphine there could be

Last Friday, I took part in our school’s upcycling competition. It was a fun and meaningful event that encouraged us to turn old things into something useful.
I made a pencil holder from an empty tin can. I cleaned it, painted it blue, and added some paper flowers. Many classmates liked it, and I felt proud. This activity taught me that small
changes can give old items a new life.
I really enjoyed the competition. It not only improved my creativity but also helped me care more about the environment.
Yours sincerely,

I rushed over to the girl, knowing exactly what to do. I knelt down carefully, my hands
gentle as I avoided the girl’s bleeding scrape. “They look serious and we need to go to the
hospital!” I glanced at the boy standing beside me. He nodded repeatedly, tears blurring his eyes
but relief softening his tense shoulders. Instead of lifting the girl back into the wheelchair, I got
her into the back seat of my Jaguar, totally ignoring the dent. “Don’t worry; we’ll get help soon,” I said, my voice warm and steady, trying to make up for my earlier harshness. After putting the
wheelchair into my trunk, we hurried to the hospital, where the girl got timely and effective treatment. “Thank you so much for helping me,” the girl said softly, her voice trembling with gratitude.
Leaving the hospital, I looked at the dent on my car. It was still there like a scar. The sun shone on the polished body of the Jaguar, making the ugly mark even more noticeable, but I felt no
annoyance, only a calm gratitude. I reached out and traced the edge of the dent with my fingertips, my mind replaying the boy’s plea and the girl’s soft weep. Possible version 1 This dent, which I once wanted to fix immediately, is now my most precious reminder: to slow down, to set aside my own haste, and to never ignore someone in need. I will never fix it, for it is not a flaw — it is a
lesson that I carry with me every time I drive. Possible version 2
The dent on my Jaguar still there, a permanent mark. But it no longer felt like damage. It felt like a reminder — a reminder that sometimes, the “brick” that hits you isn’t an attack. It’s a cry for help, a chance to slow down, to see the world beyond your own speed, and to be the person who stops. To this day, that dent is still on my car. And I’ll never fix it.
Possible version 3
It reminds me every day to slow down, to set aside my own haste, and to never ignore someone in need. I don’t fix it because it’s not a flaw; it’s a gift, a constant reminder ofthe day a small boy’s courage taught me what truly matters in life.
