During the past year, Alyssa, from Prestatyn, Denbighshire has made more than 200 blankets using almost 10,000 waste crisp packets (薯片包装袋).
The blankets have been given to organizations which support homeless people inLlandudno, Wrexham and Rhyl.
Each one takes an hour to make, but Alyssa said the effort was worth it because it helps homeless people and stops the crisp packets from being thrown in the bin.
“The bit I don’t like is washing them,” she said. “Each packet has to be opened out so it’s
flat and then washed in the sink. Then you take four of them, put them under a piece of baking (烘焙) paper, and iron them so that the heat fuses (熔接) them together. Finally, you sandwich the
crisp packets between two thin sheets of clear plastic, and you use the iron again to seal that in place.”
She explained the finished blankets look very similar on one side to the silver blankets given to marathon runners after they cross the finishing line.
试卷第 4 页,共 13 页
Alyssa started making the blankets in August 2021 and asked her mum to get colleagues at work to start collecting old crisp packets for her.
She said: “When you put the blanket around your body, the heat reflects back off the silver part of the crisp packet. You wouldn’t think you could turn a crisp packet into something so
helpful, but homeless people like the blankets because they’re really lightweight and waterproof. Crisp packets are really hard to recycle, so this is a new way to stop them going in the bin.”
Alyssa and her mum put the blankets into a bag along with other essential items like gloves, socks and toothpaste. The packs are given to homeless shelters or support organisations.
Alyssa’s mum, Darlene, said: “she makes the blankets after school-it certainly keeps her away from her phone. She’s passionate about the environment, and the homeless support
organisations in North Wales have been very positive about the blankets.”
4 .Why did Alyssa make blankets out of waste crisp packets
A .To make her dream come true. B .To help people in need.
C .To support her mum’s work. D .To raise money for some organizations.
5 .Which of the following can best describe Alyssa’s job of making the blankets
A .Expensive. B .Traditional. C .Effort-taking. D .Annoying.
6 .What do you know about the blankets that Alyssa made
A .They are heavy to carry. B .They are hard to recycle.
C .They are given to marathon runners. D .They are of great help to homeless people.
7 .What is Darlene’s attitude towards her daughter’s deeds
A .Positive. B .Unconcerned. C .Worried. D .Doubtful.

Cats, unlike dogs, can be prickly (易怒的) characters that often seem cold, distant and sometimes even totally rude. But new research from animal behaviour scientists in the UK has found the blame can fall on the person not the animal.
While most dogs will shower any person with warmth, cats are harder to please and have a few more rules before they warm to a person. For example, cats have “red areas” where they
hate to be touched, which include the base of their tail and the stomach. Attempts to stroke (轻抚) these regions will immediately get their back up. However, they have “green areas” too, such as
试卷第 5 页,共 13 页
the regions at the base of the ears and under the chin.
The new study, published in the journal Scientific Reports, found that self-appointed “cat people” are more likely to touch the red areas, making the animal feel uncomfortable. And people who had lived with cats for several years were also found to not give cats enough independence, with their “hand-on” way robbing the pets of their freedom.
Some 120 people of varying cat exposure (暴露) were gathered for the study. Aperson was left in a room and three cats, one after another, were let in to play for five minutes each. The person was told to wait for the cat to come to them but was then left to their own devices when it came to fussing over (过于体贴), engaging with or cuddling (搂抱) the cat.
Researchers found that participants who had lived with cats were likely to be overbearing (专横的) while the most experienced owners also were more likely to stroke cats in “yellow areas”, such as the tail, legs and along their backs, which are less preferred areas than the face, for
example.
Lead researcher Dr. Lauren Finka, a cat behavioral expert, said, “Shelters should avoid
discriminating against potential adopters with no previous cat ownership experience, because they may make fantastic cat guardians.”
8 .What can be learned from the new research in paragraph 1
A .Cats tend to be not as warm as dogs.
B .Dogs tend to be prickly characters.
C .The animal itself is to blame for its bad behavior.
D .Humans should be blamed for cats’ unfriendly behavior.
9 .Which areas of cats will probably make them uncomfortable when touched

Sometimes it’s not sunny enough to depend on solar power, or windy enough to turn the windmill (风车). So, Finnish researchers have invented a year-round, 24/7 energy source: a
battery made from sand.
Markku Ylonen and Tommi Eronen are the young engineers who came up with the idea of building a sand battery. They founded a company called Polar Night Energy to develop their
concept. Now, they’ve placed their first sand battery in a power plant in southwest Finland.
So how do you build a sand battery Polar Night poured 100 tons of low-grade sand into a container. Then they charged the sand battery with cheap solar or wind energy until it was 500
degrees Celsius. As anybody who’s ever burnt their soles (鞋底) on a hot beach knows, sand stores heat very well. Polar Night’s plan is in its name: they want to use that hot sand to warm homes and other buildings through Finland’s long, cold winter nights.
As the sand warms up, a heat exchanger in the sand will circulate (循环) the hot air until it’s distributed (分布) throughout the sand battery. Ylonen and Eronen say their battery will be able to keep the sand at a toasty 500 degrees Celsius for several months.
Since green energy is hard to come by in winter, that’s when the price shoots up. Polar
Night’s plan is to charge their sand battery before the days get short. “Whenever there’s this high surge of available green electricity, we want to be able to get it into storage really quickly," said Ylonen, as reported by the BBC.
Most batteries require lithium (锂) — which is expensive to extract (提取) from the earth
— so increasing the production of sand batteries could be one more useful tool in the fight against ruining the planet beyond human habitation. But we can’t get too excited. A recently released UN report named sand the Earth’s second most exploited (被开发的) resource after water, and warned of a global sand crisis (危机). Used for constructing roads and buildings, sand is our most mined material.
12 .Why are solar power and windmill mentioned in the first paragraph

A .To explain the pain while walking on the beach.
B .To explain the purpose of the Polar Night’s plan.
C .To explain the reason for building sand batteries.
D .To explain the characteristic of sand storing heat.
14 .What do the underlined words“shoots up” in paragraph 5 mean
A .Reduces rapidly. B .Cuts rapidly. C .Increases quickly. D .Forms gradually.
15 .What does the recently released UN report suggest
A .Lithium is easy to extract from the earth.
B .Sand is in danger of being over-exploited.
C .Water is more precious natural resource than sand.
D .Increasing the production of sand batteries is harmful.

It was a throwaway remark (脱口而出的话) that led to a beautiful act of kindness. Lucy’s teacher Mr. Smith hadn’t thought what he did would make a big difference.
Lucy mentioned that she felt so happy and blessed with a caring teacher and adorable
classmates around at school. She studied at Burleson High School in Texas for two years, yet she said that she didn’t have a birthday cake, let alone a birthday party.
“It was memorable and unforgettable. It made me feel so good that I had so many
wonderful classmates and lovely teacher.” She later told a newspaper named InsideEdition. “It was totally a surprise. Let me tell you that.”
The poor girl, Lucy, told her teacher Mr. Smith, that she couldn’t remember the last time
she had a birthday cake. When she finished the conversation with her teacher, she thought nothing else of it. But her teacher decided to do something special to celebrate their girl’s 16th birthday on Thursday. Shortly afterwards, the teacher came up with a warm plan: he wanted to throw a
surprise party. In fact, Lucy was born in a poor family. Her father worked very hard to support the family. Her mother died in a car accident. As a consequence, Lucy didn’t get enough love from
her family. She always looked shy when she talked with her classmates. Mr. Smith noticed it and he tried to make Lucy cheerful. He wanted all the other students to give a helping hand to her. In that case, Lucy wouldn’t feel left out and she could become more confident.
The day before Lucy’s birthday, at a break, Mr. Smith shared his plan with the monitor
called John who was a warm-hearted and caring boy. John listened attentively with his eyes
sparkling with excitement, “That is perfect,” John said. “Let’s go for it. Maybe you could ask
Lucy to your office tomorrow during the break. That’ll give us enough time to decorate the
classroom.” Mr. Smith nodded with a smile. “Sounds like a plan.” The next day, everything went exactly as they had planned.
