Kana Mondal, who grew up in the North 24 Parganas in West Bengal, knows the
importance of standing on one’s own feet because of the poverty that she has gone through while growing up. That was what encouraged her to establish a business aimed at helping people in the region and continues to support them through difficulties after a cyclone (旋风)hit the area.
Trained in stitching and embroidery (刺绣)herself, Mondal understood the importance of training local women and slowly expanded her reach through Hasta Udyog, a handicraft company in the North 24 Parganas in West Bengal. After the founding of the company, she has been able to employ thousands of people in recent years in the region, benefiting more than 25, 000 families.
She has won many awards for her work, including the well-known Jankidevi Bajaj Puraskar for Rural Entrepreneurship.
With the help of Mondal, people in the region climbed out of poverty through their own
talent and hard work all these years. However, cyclone Amphan has pushed many of them back
into miserable poverty again. With sadness but also determination, Kana decided to lift people out of the difficulties once again. Mondal has been able to provide relief for more than 2, 500 families hit by the cyclone so far, “but it is not enough”, she says. What she really wants to see is that
people could walk without a supporting hand once again.
So Mondal would like to start working again with the women in the region, but she has to
first ensure that they start believing in the future. “We are providing them with clothes, books for children and have also distributed (分发)money, but we still need a massive effort to uplift these people. So my focus is on cooperating with the local authorities so that people’s lives can return to normal at the earliest.”
24 .What inspired Kana Mondal to help people in the North 24 Parganas

John Agnello, a 15-year-old boy, was out fishing with his mom near the Lakefront Marina in Grosse Pointe Woods Tuesday afternoon when he saw that a car just got flying in the air. It was about 15 yards away and dropped into the water.
Without hesitation, John said, he and a man jumped into the water to help the woman inside the car. “The car was at like 65% water, so then we had to get her out of the window because the door wasn’t opening,” he said. He and the man pulled the woman to safety, who lost
consciousness (意识). John’s mom, Beth Agnello, called 911 at once. John wondered whether there was anybody else inside the car, so he jumped back into the water. Thankfully, the car was empty.

While most libraries have added movies, computers and even toys, a library in New York City has taken it one step further and made room for a few new accessories (配件) at its Riverside branch. Michelle Lee, a young adult librarian, came up with the idea to offer library goers
interview accessories such as ties, purses, and briefcases for those who can’t afford to buy them.
The idea came to her in 2016 when she gave a talk to high school students about resumes and job seeking. After explaining to the teens that they would be expected to come in business clothes and that backpacks were off-limits, several participants said that they didn’t have nice
things to use.
试卷第 7 页,共 13 页
She quickly put one and one together and realized that the Riverside library branch—which was filled with about 200 students every day—could be part of the solution by lending out the
much-needed interview supplies. Many of the students used the computers to write their resumes and search for jobs, so it would be a convenient place to offer that type of service.
With the idea at hand, Lee submitted (提交) a plan to Innovation Project, which enabled library staff to find solutions to problems that they encounter at the library. Her submission won; and she used the funding from the Charles H. Revson Foundation to buy 12 handbags and
briefcases. Ties and pocket squares were donated, in part by an employee at Bloomingdale’s.
The first accessories were put out at the library in August 2018. People could borrow them for up to three weeks at a time for job interviews, proms, or any other event that requires dressing up. Many people have used the service, including Panarat Imcharoen, a Thailand-native who took out a Kenneth Cole purse for carrying interview necessities because she couldn’t afford a bag
large enough to carry them in. “I was surprised, I didn’t know before you could borrow men’s and women’s bags,” Imcharoen said. “That’s a good idea if someone needs it.”
32 .What makes the Riverside library branch special
A .Providing books for the needy. B .Having a large collection of movies.
C .Lending out interview supplies. D .Offering Job opportunities to people.
33 .Why did Michelle Lee choose the Riverside library branch for her idea

C .It was equipped with computers. D .It was frequented by students.
34 .What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A .The effort Lee made for her goal.
B .The challenges Lee faced in her work.
C .The items Lee-collected for her library.
D .The support Lee got from the public.
35 .How does Panarat Imcharoen sound when talking about the library’s service

There was a busy street corner beside a bus station. Pupils changed buses going to or from school there. This small area was anything but appealing: loud cars and buses passed by, and tall gray buildings looked like big stone giants.
Peter was one of the kids who had to wait here for nine and a half minutes each day to
change buses. The station had a strong gas smell. The land nearby, maybe once a garden, was now full of trash — cans, paper bags, and chicken boxes. Weeds (草) grew wild all around them. There was nowhere nice to walk and nothing to look at. Hanging around like that each day almost drove Peter mad. Most kids wasted their time complaining (抱怨) about all the mess, but Peter felt
restless. He knew he couldn’t do anything to change the bus company’s timetable and its bus routes but he could make these waiting minutes more enjoyable for himself and others.
He asked his mom for a pair of gloves and some trash bags. That week, he filled his nine

minutes each day by picking up the waste. As he piled the waste into bags, “Why trouble
yourself It’ll just get dirty again!” his classmates laughed at him, casually throwing used tissues, candy wrappers and cans around. Silent for a while, Peter continued picking up the waste his
classmates dropped, thinking, “It seems like an impossible dream to change this deserted land. Should I give up just as my classmates said ”
One afternoon, an elderly man approached Peter. “I used to garden here years ago,” he said, handing Peter some sunflower seeds (种子). “Perhaps you can plant these. You know, sunflowers grow easily in hard environments.” Inspired by the elderly man, Peter saw hope again. The next
week, Peter occupied himself weeding the field and soon this piece of land was cleared up.

Hello, everyone. My name is Pablo. I live in a nice neighborhood. However, there are also very poor neighborhoods in the city. Life is terrible for many of the children in these areas. They are homeless. They don’t have enough food and even education. Last year, I came back here in
Mexico. I spent one year here as a volunteer with an organization. It has several programs. I
volunteered for one program to work at a “home” for street children. Here, they had a place to
sleep and three meals daily. The home showed them another way of life. As a volunteer, I helped to prepare meals. I taught them to do sports and enjoy arts. I also helped the children with their
homework. These kids could be fun. But their long and difficult time on the streets made them not

Next, he took out the sunflower seeds offered by the elderly man. Peter knelt on the broken ground, loosened the soil, and carefully planted the seeds. His classmates laughed again, “Flowers can’t grow here.” But Peter watered the seeds every day. Days later, small green plants came up
from the dry ground. Everyone was surprised and stopped laughing. When a hot wave hit, Peter
skipped his lunch to cover the plants with cardboard. One day, a girl who used to litter brought
water for the plants. Soon, other kids helped too, watering the young flowers while they waited for buses.
More kids began to help take care of the plants. Their laughter mixed with the sound of
water cans. The sunflowers grew taller each day. At the end of summer, they were taller than the kids, with big yellow flowers facing the sun, as if waving at the buses and the kids around them. Butterflies flew among the flowers, and kids’ laughter filled the corner. They called the garden
“Peter’s Patch”. The gas smell and traffic noise were still there, but the corner changed — it was now full of life, a place which the kids felt proud of, showing that even small changes can make a big difference.
