What do classrooms, computer desks, cafeterias (自助食堂), and libraries have in common That’s the places where students spend so much of their time. Although hours of studying burn
mental energy, both your body and mind need physical exercise to function efficiently.
试卷第 3 页,共 13 页
The importance of exercise is nothing new. Thomas Jefferson once wrote that to be
successful in academic studies, a person should spend two hours on exercise every day, for health must not be sacrificed (牺牲) for learning. A strong body makes the mind strong.
It turns out Jefferson was on to something. A study by researchers at Tufts University found that students who said they exercised at least 3 days a week were more likely to report a better
state of physical health and greater happiness than those who didn’t exercise. This and other
evidence suggest that the real benefits of exercise may not come right after a workout but from a longer commitment to regular activity.
But experts today do not demand 2 hours of daily exercise. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommends that people get at least 60 minutes of physical activity most
days of the week.
Walking, jogging and swimming are easy ways to increase your heart rate and improve health. Exercise can also help lower blood pressure and reduce stress. For women, exercise that makes the body and bones bear weight — like walking or running — may reduce the risk of
osteoporosis (骨质疏松) later in life.
You’ll likely discover another benefit of exercise as well: greater self-confidence. This may make it easier for you to participate in class and help you perform well in academic and social
situations.
24 .What can be inferred from the first paragraph
A .A lot of students like to read while eating.
B .Dining halls can also be used to do exercise.
C .Study and exercise burn the same amount of energy.
D .Many students don’t pay enough attention to exercise.

Barcelona’s electric 18-year-old winger Lamine Yamal has been handed the famous No 10 shirt previously worn by club icon (偶像) Lionel Messi, capping a remarkable breakthrough
season for the teenager.
Yamal earned the jersey (球衣) after a remarkable campaign, in which he scored 25 goals for the club in over 100 appearances. The youngster, who wore the No 19 shirt last season, had
already committed his long-term future to the club, agreeing a contract extension in May that will keep him at Barcelona until 2031. Having turned 18 on Sunday, Yamal was finally able to sign the contract and make it official. He did so on Wednesday, accompanied by his family.
He also received the No 10 shirt from club president Joan Laporta in a special ceremony.
The No 10 shirt carries enormous weight at the Camp Nou, having been worn by Messi during his period of great success with numerous trophies (奖杯) at the club that shaped his career.
The No 10 has also graced the backs of Barca greats such as Diego Maradona and
Ronaldinho, but Yamal said he would not be weighed down by its legacy. “I’ll try to build my
own path, but all kids would like to be like them,” Yamal said Wednesday at the club’s
announcement. “All three have been incredible players, they’re all legends, and I will try to follow in their footsteps.”
“Messi paved the way with the No 10, I will make mine,” Yamal told reporters. “They are three soccer and club legends. Every kid dreams of having something from Messi, Ronaldinho and Maradona. I’ll try to carry on that legacy.”
“First, my dream was to debut (首次登场) for Barca and wear the No 10. Everyone who
grows up here dreams of that. I’m grateful to the club.” Having also won the European
Championship with Spain last year, Yamal said his goal is to win all the other titles that are
missing from his trophy collection. “I haven’t won the Champions League and the World Cup,” he said. “These are my goals now.” “My goal is to keep winning and growing,” Yamal said. “It’s the club of my life. It’s my home, I’ve been here since I was seven years old.”

Traditionally, business associates would get to know each other over a round of golf, but
road cycling is fast catching up as the preferred networking way for modern professionals. A
growing number of corporate-sponsored charity bike rides and city cycle clubs are providing ideal opportunities to talk shop with like-minded workmates and clients while discussing different bike frames. Many believe cycling is better than golf for building lasting working relationships or
landing a new job because it is less competitive.
Peter Murray, a former architect, explains: “When you play golf with somebody, you have to decide if you’re going to beat them, or let them beat you. If they’re a client and you don’t want to beat them, you have to sort of cheat to lose. That’s not a good way.” Group cycling, especially long-distance riding, is a shared experience where riders work together, taking turns at the front to

help others save almost a third of the effort. A keen long-distance rider, Murray founded the
annual Cycle to Cannes in 2005 — a six-day charity event where architects cycle 1,500 km from London to the MIPIM property fair in France each March, having raised 4.5m for charities.
Jean-Jacques Lorraine, a regular participant, says cycling reveals character: “Conversations flow easily. I often say things I wouldn’t normally, and others share things with me unexpectedly. Some riders are single-minded, others cooperative; some plan cleverly, others an open book.”
Simon Mottram, CEO of Rapha, notes long- distance cycling lifts mood, focusing on riding and companions. “The rhythm of fuelling, riding, celebrating eases life’s stresses.” Unlike quick
post-work meals, long rides allow deeper connections and break the gap between higher and lower positions: “A younger rider might help a CEO, changing their off-ride relationship.”
Perhaps the most compelling reason why cycling is a good way to network is that, for many professionals, it’s a passion and a way of life they share. “It’s what we dream of while at our
computers,” Mottram adds.

On June 17th, ocean rower Lia Ditton set off on a 20-foot-long rowboat, alone and
unsupported, in an attempt to set the fastest ever time for a solo (独自的) crossing from San
Francisco to Hawaii, about 2,500 sea miles. Currently, the women’s record stands at 99 days and the men’s record at 52 days. The women’s record goes to the island of Oahu and the men’s record

goes to the Big Island. Ditton intends to beat the record for fastest solo row for any human, man or
woman.
Ditton is a licensed captain and professional adventurer. The London-born 40-year-old has been training from her base in San Francisco and has spent the final few weeks before setting off wiring her own boat, ensuring all the necessary equipment was on-board, and packing enough

successful 728-mile, 24-day training row from Ilwaco, Washington to San Francisco in September 2019.
But this week just after Lia’s start, a tragedy occurred. Fellow distance rower, Angela
Madsen lost her life during some routine in-water training. The waters that lie ahead aren’t for the faint of heart. The journey will require Ditton to sail for the Continental Shelf before facing the
possibility of ship encounters, extreme weather, and currents, and the travelling through the Shark Café, an area where great white sharks frequent.

local gyms. The owner, Adria, of one gym, was very personal as I could tell she’d be good at motivating me. It turned out that we became good friends.
I hoped being my friend meant she’d allow me not to attend a class ifI just didn’t feel like it. On days when I said I couldn’t attend and gave one excuse after another, she pointed out the
other time options that were available on the schedule. She wouldn’t let me out of the commitment I made no matter how many times I tried. Soon I was seeing changes in my body, emotions and
attitude. I began to look forward to going to the gym.
One day, Adria mentioned she was tired and needed a day off. I sympathized with her but was shocked when the next thing out of her mouth was, “I wish you could get certified because
you’re the only one I’d trust with the keys.” I laughed it off, knowing that was impossible. Me A trainer
For days following our conversation, every time the thought popped into my head, I heard the words — “No way” But for some reason, I couldn’t stop thinking about it. So I decided to do some research to understand what it would take to be a Group Fitness instructor. I learned it’d take 3-6 months of reading texts, analyzing charts and watching videos, as well as online activities.
I finally signed up for the American Council on Exercise course. It was hard that I had to
learn about certain muscles and workouts and memorize the decibel (分贝) level for the music
used for each type of class. There were many times when I wanted to give up. But I chose to make a commitment to myself and follow through.

students who said they exercised at least 3 days a week were more likely to report a better state of physical health and greater happiness than those who didn’t exercise. This and other evidence
suggest that the real benefits of exercise may not come right after a workout but from a longer
commitment to regular activity.

The test day finally came, and it was no joke. My hands were sweating as I walked into the examination room. The written part was hard——things about muscles and workouts, and even safety instructions I’d memorized late into the night. But the practical exam was worse:
demonstrating exercises flawlessly while explaining their benefits to a panel of evaluators. My voice shook at first, but then I remembered Adria’s faith in me. Her words — “You’re the only one I’d trust...”, echoed in my ears. Somewhere, I learned that I passed the test.
I went to Adria to share the good news. When I told Adria that I had passed the test, her face lit up with a huge smile. She hugged me tightly and said she knew I could make it. I couldn’t
thank her enough at that moment. From then on, I started my new journey as a fitness instructor.
Becoming a certified fitness instructor wasn’t just about a career change for me; it was about
proving to myself that I could do anything I set my mind to, regardless of my age.
