第二部分 阅读(共两节, 满分 50 分)
第一节(共 15 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 37.5 分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的 A 、B 、C 、D 四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
Advances in artificial intelligence (AI) are indicating that accurate quake forecasting may be attainable, thereby casting doubt on the conventional wisdom that such an accomplishment is beyond our capabilities. Researchers at the University of Texas, Austin, created an AI model that, during a test run in China, correctly forecasted approximately 70 percent of earthquakes with a
one-week warning and offered reliable assessments oftheir potential intensity.
The researchers attribute their technique’s effectiveness to its reliance on a straightforward machine learning framework. The AI was provided with a set of statistical features based on the team’s knowledge of earthquake physics, and then instructed to train itself using a five-year
database of earthquake recordings. Once trained, the AI offered predictions by detecting early indicators of quakes hidden within the planet’s low-frequency rumbles (隆隆声).
The project marks a substantial breakthrough in the exploration of AI for anticipating
seismic (地震) events. According to Alexandros Savvaidis, a senior researcher heading the Texas
试卷第 3 页,共 14 页
Seismological Network, “Seismic occurrences strike without warning, often in the blink of an eye. Your readiness is all you can influence. Achieving a 70% prediction rate is a considerable
achievement that could significantly restrict the impact of earthquakes, reducing both the financial burden and loss of life, and the potential to remarkably improve earthquake preparation
worldwide.”
Although the effectiveness of this method in different regions remains uncertain, the
researchers believe that their AI model has the potential to enhance prediction accuracy when
carried out in regions equipped with dependable seismic monitoring facilities. Their next step is to test artificial intelligence in Texas, where the University of Texas’s TexNet operates a network of 300 earthquake stations and over six years’ worth of continuous records, making it an ideal
location for these purposes.
Ultimately, the authors aim to combine the system with physics-based models. This
approach could be particularly valuable in areas characterized by limited or inadequate data. “That may be a long way off, but many advances such as this one, taken together, are what moves
science forward,” concludes Scott Tinker, the bureau’s director.
21 .How does the AI predict seismic events
A .By using a simple machine learning system.
B .By identifying hidden signs in the rumbles.
C .By relying on experts’ earthquake knowledge.
D .By analyzing data of earthquake recordings.
22 .What does Alexandros Savvaidis intend to show in paragraph 3
A .The ways to reduce losses in earthquakes.
B .The importance of preparing for earthquakes.
C .The significance of developing the AI prediction.
D .The restrictions of AI-based methods in earthquake prediction.
23 .What does the subsequent research focus on

Parts of Africa are covered by a dark cloud. But this is no rain cloud. It is a living cloud
made of billions of locusts (蝗虫) that are traveling across the continent eating everything in their path.
And now in the battle to stop this disaster, a radio station in Senegal, West Africa, is
offering listeners 50 kilograms of rice if they can catch and kill 50 kilograms of locusts. “We think this idea will get more people to take part in the war on the locusts”, said Abdoulaye Ba, from
Sud-FM, a radio station in one of Senegal’s worst affected areas.
This is West Africa’s biggest locust disaster in 15 years, and it is moving east, causing huge damage to crops. As they move, they produce young and increase their number and will soon
threaten (威胁) Sudan in the northeast of Africa. Some say it could reach Asia. Experts say the
harmful effect on crops in areas already suffering from food shortages and war could cause many people to go hungry. Governments in the areas are not well equipped to fight the pest.
Although leaders of 12 countries have agreed on a plan, it is not expected to be enough.
“We are now treating 6,000 hectares (公顷) per day with pesticide (杀虫剂), but we need to treat 20,000 hectares per day in order to have any hope of controlling this disaster, ” said Mohamed
Abdallahi Ould Babah, director of locust control in Mauritania.
“Requests are being made for international aid, which is the only way to limit the disaster, ” the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization warned.
25.What’s the author’s intention by using “a dark cloud” to describe locusts in the first paragraph A .To show the size and speed of the mass of locusts.
B .To suggest the great damage that locusts can cause.
C .To warn that locusts may sweep the continent like rain clouds.
D .Both A and B.
26 .The passage is mainly about .
A .West Africa’s united effort in fighting a disaster

B .the difficulty in controlling locusts
C .how locusts caused great damage to West Africa
D .a struggle to fight against a disaster brought by locusts in West Africa
27 .What can we know about the locust disaster
A .It will be even more serious in Asia.
B .It is out of control.
C .It is affecting only the warning areas.
D .It cannot be stopped unless twice as much pesticide is provided for the affected areas.
28 .Which of the following isn’t mentioned
A .A radio station offers a reward for fighting locusts so that more people will join in the effort.
B .Senegal is to the west of Sudan.
C.The locusts can cause such damage mainly because they have no natural enemy in West Africa.
D .12 countries affected by locusts have united.

The Yellow River is the cradle of China’s civilization. And flood control and prevention have always been key to the well-being of the people living along it. Now, scientists can better work on these issues by giving the river a digital twin.
The digital twin of the Yellow River uses various technologies, including big data, artificial intelligence, and the internet of things. Devices (设备) set up along the river collect and transmit information to the center. Based on the information, a 3D model of the river is presented on the
computer screen. It’s like the Yellow River has a twin that reflects its real conditions.
One big breakthrough in the river’s digital governance (治理) is “smart stones”. According to Wang Qin, a lead researcher at the Information Center of Yellow River Henan Bureau, a smart stone is a water-proof stone-shaped device with chips, a battery, and a signal transmitter. They are buried in important dike (堤坝) locations to record and report the movement of dike stones. “Upon feeling movement of the dike stones, the smart stone sends an alarm to the center for quick
response,” Wang said.
“In the past, researchers had to learn the conditions of the dike on the spot by themselves, putting their lives at risk,” said Zhao Xiao from the bureau. “Now the smart stones can do this for

us, more safely, quickly, and accurately.”
And in the sky, drones (无人机) are flying. On the routes designed by engineers, the drones become expert patrollers (巡逻员) of the river, looking at its dikes and flood prevention projects. According to Shen Lin from the Yellow River Conservancy Commission, thanks to the drones,
researchers at the command center can get first-hand photos and information. “Researchers then
update the 3D model according to the changes the drones reported. The newly updated model
helps us test our floodwater release plans in case we ever need to batten down the hatches (未雨绸缪), ”said Shen.
Under the water and up in the sky, intelligence systems are helping to protect the Yellow River Basin on all fronts. According to the Ministry of Water Resources, in the future, we can expect to see the construction of an even more comprehensive digital system for this important river.
29 .What is the main purpose of creating a digital twin of the Yellow River
A .To conduct historical research.
B .To create a virtual tourist attraction.
C .To raise public awareness of river protection.
D .To improve flood control and prevention efforts.
30 .How do the smart stones contribute to the river’s digital governance
A .They record water quality.
B .They improve the river’s beauty.
C .They monitor and report dike movements.
D .They serve as markers for important locations.
31 .What is the text mainly about
A .The digital twin of the Yellow River.
B .The drones have an important influence on flood prevention.
C .How to control and prevent flood of the Yellow River.
D .How to make the people living along the Yellow River be richer.

LONDON — The U. K. recorded its highestever temperatures Tuesday with readings of over 104 degrees Fahrenheit, as a heat wave scorched the nation and caused fires around the
capital.
During the day, at least 34 places across the country broke the previous record. Several blazes broke out across London — including a large fire in a residential area. London Mayor Sadiq Khan said on Twitter that the fire brigade was under “immense pressure,” and warned citizens to stay safe.
Tuesday has been the second successive day of extremely hot weather in the nation. The U.
K. government has declared a national emergency, while the national meteorological (气象的)
service, the Met Office, started its first-ever “red extreme heat warning” across England.
Nationwide, schools and summer camps have closed, hospitals have canceled routine visits and transport has been disrupted, with many railways and the London subway system urging
customers to stay at home.
The heat warped (使变形) runways at U. K. airports on Monday, forcing Luton Airport to stop all flights until early evening. The Met office has warned against melting asphalt (沥青) on roads and has advised citizens not to travel.
“In this country we’re used to treating a hot spell as a chance to go and play in the sun,”
said Penny Endersby, chief executive at the Met Office, in a press release. “This is not that sort of weather.”
Scientists have warned that climate change is likely to make weather of this severity more common. Dr Friederike Otto, a climate scientist at Imperial College London, said, “It would have been almost impossible to see temperatures of 40 degrees in London without climate change.”
33 .What does the underlined word “scorched” mean in the first paragraph
A .Flooded. B .Blew. C .Burned. D .Warmed.
34 .What do we know about the heat in U. K. according to the passage
A .No more than 34 places broke the previous temperature record.
B .Tuesday was the first day of extremely hot weather in the country.
C .The highest temperature readings was over 104 degrees Celsius.
D .Some fires broke out in London because of the burning weather.

35 .Why has the Met office advised citizens not to travel
A .Because the heat damaged runways at U. K. airports.
B .Because of the first-ever red extreme heat warning.
C .Because the fire brigade was under big pressure.
D .Because the awful heat has melted asphalt on roads.
36 .What can we learn from what Dr Friederike Otto said
A .Londoners are used to playing outside in the sun.
B .Climate has changed and caused burning weather.
C .This kind of climate is less likely to happen again.
D .This weather is not suitable to outdoor activities.

again for the fact that the city had already been flooded severely. As he saw through their window, the almost three-meter-high floodwater had already surrounded the apartment building like a wide river, several cars floating on it just like boats.
“Black out!” Mary gasped fearfully, the wind roaring and the rain beating on the roof and windows, which made her even more nervous in the whole darkness. Mum took Mary’s hand and carefully led her to sit on the sofa, trying her best to comfort her. While she performed calmly,
Mary could tell she was nervous too. “Let’s try to find a light source first and then see what other supplies we have.” Dad made an arrangement. Luckily, there was a flashlight, some packages of instant noodles, bread and some drinking water, which may help them get through the toughness for the half of the night. Without saying a single word, Dad turned on the flashlight, sat down and hugged his wife and daughter. The sudden silence in the house seemed to make the wind and rain more frightening outside. Only the light of the flashlight could now give them some warmth and a sense of little hope.
“What about Mrs. Thomson Old and weak, she must be extremely helpless.” Mum said with
great concern when she thought about their nice neighbor who lived alone upstairs of the same
building. After a brief discussion, Mum and Dad decided they should go and check whether Mrs. Thomson was fire. Mary, with heavy breath and pounding heart, stood up immediately, ready to bring all their supplies to Mrs. Thomson’s house.注意:

【原文】Good evening, everyone. This is your weather update. September has brought a series of weather crises to the Northern Hemisphere. Flooding from unusually heavy rains across northwest and north-central Africa has taken more than 1,000 lives and driven close to 1 million from their
homes. Storm Boris has set off days of heavy rainfall, caused billions in damage, and forced tens of thousands to evacuate flooded cities in Central Europe. Meanwhile, Typhoon Yagi has struck the Philippines and northern Vietnam and has taken more than 500 lives and cost over 13 billion dollars. These events have something in common: rising global temperatures are causing more
water to disappear from the oceans, which leads to heavier rain in some places while making dry areas even drier. Stay tuned for further updates and please stay safe during these challenging
