The production of coffee beans is a huge, profitable business, but, unfortunately, full-sun
production is taking over the industry and bringing about a lot of damage. The change in how
coffee is grown from shade-grown production to full-sun production endangers the very existence of certain animals and birds, and even disturbs the world’s ecological balance.
On a local level, the damage of the forest required by full-sun fields affects the area’s birds and animals. The shade of the forest trees provides a home for birds and other (物种) that depend on the trees’ flowers and fruits. Full-sun coffee growers destroy this forest home. As a result,
many species are quickly dying out.
On a more global level, the destruction of the rainforest for full-sun coffee fields also
threatens (威胁) human life. Medical research often makes use of the forests’ plant and animal life, and the destruction of such species could prevent researchers from finding cures for certain
diseases. In addition, new coffee-growing techniques are poisoning the water locally, and eventually the world’s groundwater.
Both locally and globally, the continued spread of full-sun coffee plantations (种植园)
could mean the destruction of the rainforest ecology. The loss of shade trees is already causing a slight change in the world’s climate, and studies show that loss of oxygen-giving trees also leads to air pollution and global warming. Moreover, the new growing techniques are contributing to acidic (酸性的) soil conditions.
It is obvious that the way much coffee is grown affects many aspects of life, from the local
environment to the global ecology. But consumers do have a choice. They can purchase
shade-grown coffee whenever possible, although at a higher cost. The future health of the planet and mankind is surely worth more than an inexpensive cup of coffee.
20 .What can we learn about full-sun coffee production from Paragraph 4
A .It limits the spread of new growing techniques.
B .It leads to air pollution and global warming.
C .It slows down the loss of shade trees.
D .It improves local soil conditions.

Have you ever heard the expression “crocodile tears” The expression reminds us of an amazing animal — The crocodile!
First, why are they amazing Well, crocodiles are experts at survival. Scientists say they first appeared 200 million years ago and have outlived the dinosaurs by some 65 million years. One reason they are such good survivors is that they can go for a very long time without eating. And they are expert hunters! They use their strong jaws to bite their prey (猎物) and then they
swallow their food whole. Here’s another fun fact about crocodiles: When they lose a tooth, they grow one right back. A crocodile can go through 8,000 teeth in one lifetime!
Okay, while these facts are fascinating, they really do not help to explain today’s
expression: crocodile tears. Simply put, “crocodile tears” are fake sadness. You pretend to cry and feel badly for something when in fact … you could not care less. A great word to describe
crocodile tears is insincere.
But why do tears from an ancient, unfeeling reptile (爬行动物) mean false sadness Well, the expression “crocodile tears” comes from an old myth that crocodiles would shed tears while
eating their prey. Writers on the website Crocodilian.com claim that this myth was in use by the
1200s. A religious worker from that time wrote that if a crocodile found a man by the water, it
would kill him ifit could. Then the crocodile would cry tears on the man, but then finally swallow him.
Another myth about crocodile tears suggests the animals are very crafty indeed. Crocodiles, the story goes, would shed tears as a false show of guilt or grief to trick their prey. The prey would come closer and then become dinner.
So, that is the origin of the phrase “crocodile tears.” But, please note. You do not have to have actual tears flowing down your face to have “crocodile tears.” If you fake sadness or regret
by using only words, others can still accuse you of having “crocodile tears.” Sometimes, crocodile tears are worse than insincere. Sometimes they are also hypocritical. Those are the times you are showing sadness but actually in your heart, you are quite happy about the situation.
23 .What can best explain why crocodiles are good survivors
A .They outlived the dinosaurs by 65 million years.
B .They remain alive without food for a long time.
C .They have strong jaws and teeth to bite the prey.
D .They pretend to shed tears before swallowing a prey.
24 .What does the underlined sentence in Para3 mean
A .You care more than anyone else. B .You do care as much as before.
C .You don’t care it at all. D .You care no less than others.
25 .According to the second myth, why would crocodiles shed tears
A .To show sympathy for the prey. B .To attract the prey’s attention.
C .To feel guilty for the dying prey. D .To cheat the prey to get closer.
26 .In which of the following situations can you find the employment of“crocodile tears”
A .You feel sorry for your opponent’s failure in a match.
B .You feel sad for your friend’s being seriously ill.
C .You are jealous of your coworker’s quick promotion.
D .You are sad because your application was rejected.

Positioned high above New York’s fish-filled Hudson River, the Bear Mountain Bridge, a 2,255-foot suspension bridge roughly 50 miles north of Manhattan, offers an appealing nesting
ground for ospreys, which are masters at flying down into bodies of water to catch fish. The large birds have nests atop the bridge tower. However, this is not their first time on this scenic spot.
“Two years ago at the bridge, the large birds started building nests on top of the tower,”
says Craig Gardner, manager of maintenance for the New York State Bridge Authority. “We had to go up to try to encourage them to go someplace else. But last year, before we could get the
nests, they laid eggs.”
While the nesting birds are a good indicator of the ecological recovery of the Hudson, the
nests can pose some risks to approximately 20,000 vehicles per day which cross the Bear
Mountain Bridge. The nest itself is about 250 feet above the roadway, so if a stick, a branch, or even a fish falls out ofit, cars and people below are at risk.
The New York State Bridge Authority, which operates and maintains five bridges along the Mid-Hudson River Valley, typically tries to encourage the birds to nest on the lower spots, closer to the river and away from cars. But these birds appear to be seeking out the top spots with
impressive views.
The solution: a human-built steel nesting box made especially for the ospreys. Instead of dismantling the nests, workers installed (安装) a steel box so that the birds could have a safer place to build nests.
The box is similar to a basket with the mesh (细网) inside. “The birds went back there as soon as we left, rearranging the sticks and establishing their nests,” says Gardner.
27 .Why did the workers of the Authority go up to the tower two years ago
A .To build safer nests. B .To collect the eggs.
C .To count the nesting birds. D .To drive the ospreys away.
28 .What is paragraph 3 intended to stress
A .The bridge needs updating for its appeal. B .Nests above the roadway can cause risks.
C .Nesting birds benefit the local ecosystem. D .Ospreys are not masters at building nests.
29 .What does the underlined word “dismantling” in paragraph 5 most probably mean
A .Decoration. B .Locating. C .Removing. D .Repairing.
30 .Which topic is closely related to the text
A .Wildlife Protection Is Worrying B .Urban Planning Requires Creativity
C .Humans and Animals Live in Harmony D .Advanced Technology Works Wonders

Five women scientists have identified and formally described two previously unknown
species of wart sea slugs (海蛞蝓) found in the waters off North Sulawesi, Indonesia. These new additions to marine biodiversity have been named Phyllidia ovata and Phyllidia fontjei.
Wart sea slugs are part of the Phyllidiidae family and are found all over the Indo-Pacific. They feed on sponges (海绵) and use the toxins from their food to protect themselves. Their
vibrant and striking colors, as well as their ability to avoid hunters through chemical means have made them well-known among both researchers and marine life enthusiasts.
In North Sulawesi alone, scientists have recorded around 350 species of sea slugs. Among these, nearly 100 are believed to be newly discovered but have not yet been officially named. With the formal recognition of Phyllidia ovata and Phyllidia fontjei, the particularly rare and colorful
species have now been added to the scientific record.
Phyllidia ovata is named for its egg-like shape and pattern. It’s been photographed in
several places over the past 23 years but was officially recognized now. A diver collected one in
North Sulawesi, and it’s up to 5 cm long. Phyllidia fontjei is named after Dr Fontje Kaligis, who
helped international research on North Sulawesi’s biodiversity. With a maximum documented size of 16 mm, this small species of wart sea slug is difficult to find.
These discoveries were helped by people without formal scientific education but passionate about Earth’s diversity. Photographs and data posted on citizen science platforms, social media
sites, and committed sea slug communities provided researchers with vital information for identifying these new species and figuring out their geographical distribution.
“We all use these platforms in many different fields of taxonomy (分类学) as they provide useful records when the species are distinctive, and have done so for more than two decades,” says Dr Nathalie Yonow of Swansea University, one of the authors of the study.
31 .What did the five female scientists identify
A .A lonely island. B .Unusual new species.
C .A new kind of seafood. D .Polluted waters in Indonesia.
32 .What does the underlined word “vibrant” in paragraph 2 mean
A .Simple. B .Ordinary. C .Predictable. D .Bright.
33 .What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A .How the two species are named. B .How a scientist assessed a species.
C .How an international team is formed. D .How the researchers tested small fish.
34 .What can be inferred about citizen science platforms
A .They mainly engage with young minds. B .They often offer inaccurate information.
C .They are crucial for finding new species. D .They are unpopular in the scientific community.

From an airplane, cars moving slowly down highways look like ants. But unlike cars, ants somehow avoid the trouble of stop-and-go traffic — a mystery researchers are studying to
improve self-driving vehicle technology.
Traffic flow becomes unstable as the number of vehicles increases. At 15 vehicles per mile per lane, a single driver tapping the brakes can cause a lasting wave of traffic jams that spreads
backward for miles. “This is a phase transition,” explains Katsuhiro Nishinari, a traffic researcher — similar to water freezing into ice, where a small change (like a temperature drop) causes a
dramatic shift in state (from liquid to solid).
Nishinari’s earlier research revealed that ants searching for food keep smooth flow even
when there are very large numbers of them. Their secret Recent studies tracking desert ants show they travel in well-organized groups of 3 — 20 individuals, moving at nearly constant speeds with consistent spacing between one another — about three body lengths apart. Crucially, they never
speed up to overtake slower-moving peers, which prevents the “sudden slowdowns” that jam human traffic.
Human drivers, by contrast, prioritize personal speed over collective efficiency, which is
why jams occur. “We maximize individual interests, leading to bad jams,” notes Nicola Pugno, an engineer studying the behavior of groups. Self-driving cars, however, could be programmed to
cooperate: sharing real-time data with nearby vehicles to maintain steady speeds and distances, or avoiding overtaking altogether. This vehicle network would be analogous to ants on a trail, which use chemical smells to organize their movements to coordinate behavior while interacting with
one another.
However, ants have advantages cars can’t match. They can widen their trails when needed, while drivers are confined to fixed highway lanes. Moreover, ants never crash; they simply crawl over one another when paths cross.
Still, today’s drivers can learn from ants: Nishinari advises avoiding following too closely.
Leaving extra space between cars allows drivers to absorb sudden braking in heavy traffic,
preventing the spread of traffic jams. “Just maintaining a safe distance,” he says, “can keep traffic flowing smoothly even when there are large numbers of cars.”
35 .What does “phase transition” in Paragraph 2 refer to
A .The process of water turning into ice.
B .A sudden shift from smooth traffic to jams.
C .Vehicles moving freely at their own preferred speeds.
D .A driver’s decision to tap the brakes suddenly.
36 .How do ants prevent traffic jams
A .They follow a leader that sets the speed.
B .They adjust their speed based on group size.
C .They maintain steady speeds and space in groups.
D .They create multiple alternative trails to avoid overcrowding.
37 .What does the underlined word “analogous” in Paragraph 4 probably mean
A .Similar. B .Superior. C .Unrelated. D .Contradictory.
38 .What is Nishinari’s advice to drivers
A .Avoiding sudden braking in heavy traffic. B .Keeping a safe distance from other cars.
C .Following the speed of self-driving vehicles. D .Using alternative routes during rush hours.

Shanghai, known for its towering skyscrapers and busy streets, might seem an unlikely place for beekeeping. Yet, Marco Sentinelli, an Italian businessman, is determined to make it happen.
Marco’s relationship with bees stretches back to his days in Italy two decades ago. When the fruit trees he planted were not producing anything, he realized the absence of bees was to
blame. He then began to study beekeeping. 39
Upon moving to Shanghai seven years ago, Marco initially thought his beekeeping days
were over. 40 Before long, the local government came to ask him to help with pollination (授粉) services, and some of his friends also brought their children to get up close with bees.
In 2024, Marco launched a non-profit organization called “Urban Bees Shanghai,” which trains volunteers to manage beehives (蜂巢) in communities across the city. 41 It has
attracted about 2,000 followers, many of them young people who want to do beekeeping purely out of interest.
42 The reasons lie in the rapid expansion of cities and the public’s lack of
awareness of the importance of bees. Additionally, since many people fear bees, their nests are often mistaken for wasp (黄蜂) nests and completely removed.
To help more people learn about bees, Marco is advocating for responsible beekeeping within the city. He has already taken the initiative to educate local fire stations on safe bee
removal, in the hope of saving local hives. 43
Marco envisions a greener, more biodiverse Shanghai. “If you place beehives on a farm, you can harvest 10 to 20 times more crops,” he said. “If we extend this into our city, we can only imagine how many more flowers and plants we can have.”
A .So far, he has rescued six or seven hives.
B .Soon, he was drawn by this fascinating hobby.
C .It’s important to draw young people to the beehives.
D .The organization now manages 20 beehives across the city.
E .Its population is reducing sharply because of our fear of them.
F .However, in 2023, he felt the pull to return to his beloved hobby.
G .Urban beekeeping is also facing great challenges, according to Marco.

When I was in the first grade, I loved school but hated walking home when the school day was over. It was a journey of several blocks, and part of this journey—around a huge, brick Army National Guard building—frightened and disturbed me. That building, along with its large parking lot, took up the whole corner of the block. There was no way for me to reach home except to walk across two sides of that corner and walk around it.
Nothing terrible ever happened to me there, but for some reason, this extremely large
building scared me. The site frequently had multiple types of artillery (大炮), military equipment, and vehicles near it, and all the activity frightened me. The soldiers performed marching exercises
and fitness drills in the parking lot, and I always felt like they were watching me. When a
commander would yell out orders and an entire group would respond in unison, I’d jump at the sounds.
The result was that I sometimes froze where I stood or walked so slowly that my mother questioned me about why it had taken me so long to get home. I came to be afraid of the school bell because it meant I had to walk by that National Guard building and its parking lot.
The only good thing about that corner was that, once I got around it, I always ran into a
friendly and very intelligent Dalmatian (斑点狗)named Chief, which I looked forward to seeing every day.
One day, early in the school year, when the National Guard corner was particularly active with moving vehicles and soldiers marching here and there, I heard a loud bang. I froze in my
tracks and couldn’t move. The noise hadn’t disturbed anyone else, and the military activity on the corner continued like nothing had happened, but I remained glued to the spot where I first heard the bang. Nervous and frightened, my mind raced with thoughts of fire, bombs, and explosions. I started breathing heavily, and my legs began shaking.

M: I’m Susie, and I’m here to talk about improving a park in my city called central park. My interest in the park was inspired by my childhood hobbies. I used to collect wildflowers, and
my books were mostly about science. When I was young, I liked playing ball games in central
park with my friends. Two years ago I went back to the park again for a walk and was amazed to see how rich it was in wildlife. But there was also lots of plastic waste lying around, so I found
volunteers to help clean up the park. Since then, the park has become popular with local people. There are two lakes in the park and they attract birds, but they need looking after as the water can dry up during dry seasons. So now I’m working with the local environmental agency to protect
that. Now I’m very busy and it’s hard to fit in things like hanging out with my friends, but they understand I need to continue working on improving the park.

根据第四段中“Both locally and globally, the continued spread of full-sun coffee plantations (种植园) could mean the destruction of the rainforest ecology. The loss of shade trees is already causing a slight change in the world’s climate, and studies show that loss of
oxygen-giving trees also leads to air pollution and global warming.(在当地和全球范围内,全日照咖啡种植园的持续扩张可能意味着雨林生态的破坏。
But consumers do have a choice. They can purchase
shade-grown coffee whenever possible, although at a higher cost. The future health of the planet
and mankind is surely worth more than an inexpensive cup of coffee.(但消费者确实有选择。
文章第一段“The change in how coffee is grown from shade-grown production to full-sun production endangers the very existence of certain animals and birds, and even disturbs the world’s ecological balance.(咖啡种植方式从遮荫生产转变为全日照生产,这危及了某些动物和鸟类的生存,甚至扰乱了世界的生态平衡)”提出中心论点,全日照的咖啡生产方式带来危害,第二段“On a local level, the damage of the forest required by full-sun fields affects the
area’s birds and animals.(在地方层面上,充足的阳光场对森林的破坏会影响该地区的鸟类和动物)” 、第三段“On a more global level, the destruction of the rainforest for full-sun coffee fields also threatens (威胁) human life.(在更全球化的层面上,为全日照咖啡田而破坏雨林也威胁着人类的生命)”以及第四段“Both locally and globally, the continued spread of full-sun coffee
plantations could mean the destruction of the rainforest ecology.(在当地和全球范围内,全日照 咖啡种植园的持续扩张可能意味着雨林生态的破坏)”从不同层面展开说明,三段为并列关系,最后一段“It is obvious that the way much coffee is grown affects many aspects of life, from the
local environment to the global ecology. 故选 A。

根据第二段“One reason they are such good survivors is that they can go for a very long time without eating. (它们之所以能成为如此优秀的幸存者,一个原因是它们可以在不吃东西的情况下存活很长时间。)”可知,它们在没有食物的情况下能存活很长时间是它们能成为优秀的幸存者的原因之一。故选 B。
24 .词句猜测题。根据上文“Simply put, “crocodile tears” are fake sadness. You pretend to cry and feel badly for something (简单来说,“鳄鱼的眼泪”就是虚假的悲伤。你假装哭泣、为某件事难过 )”和下文“A great word to describe crocodile tears is insincere. (用一个词来形容
答案第 4 页,共 13 页
“鳄鱼的眼泪” ,那就是“虚伪” 。)”可知,“鳄鱼的眼泪”就是虚假的悲伤,因此实际上你根本不在乎。由此可知,you could not care less 意为“你根本不在乎” 。故选 C。
根据第五段“Crocodiles, the story goes, would shed tears as a false show of guilt or grief to trick their prey. (据说,鳄鱼会流泪,假装内疚或悲伤,以欺骗它们的猎物。)”可知,鳄鱼流泪是为了欺骗猎物,使其靠近。故选 D。
26 .推理判断题。根据第三段“Simply put, “crocodile tears” are fake sadness. (简单来说,“鳄 鱼的眼泪”就是虚假的悲伤。)”和最后一段“Sometimes, crocodile tears are worse than insincere. Sometimes they are also hypocritical. Those are the times you are showing sadness but actually in your heart, you are quite happy about the situation. (有时候,“鳄鱼的眼泪” 比“ 不真诚” 更过分,甚至带有“虚伪” 的意味——也就是说,你表面上表现得难过,内心却对眼前的情况暗自窃
喜。)”可知,“鳄鱼的眼泪”是假装的悲伤,选项 A“你对对手在比赛中的失败感到遗憾”这种情况可能会用到“鳄鱼的眼泪”这个表达。故选 A。

Two years ago at the bridge, the large birds started building nests on top of the tower,” says Craig Gardner, manager of maintenance for the New York State
Bridge Authority. “We had to go up to try to encourage them to go someplace else.(纽约州桥梁
While the nesting birds are a good indicator of the ecological
recovery of the Hudson, the nests can pose some risks to approximately 20,000 vehicles per day
which cross the Bear Mountain Bridge. The nest itself is about 250 feet above the roadway, so if a stick, a branch, or even a fish falls out ofit, cars and people below are at risk.(虽然筑巢的鸟类是哈德逊河生态恢复的一个良好指标,但这些巢可能会对每天大约 2 万辆经过熊山大桥的车辆构成一些风险。
根据划线词前文“Instead of”和后文“workers installed (安装) a steel box so that the birds could have a safer place to build nests.(工人们安装了一个钢箱,这样鸟儿们就有了一个更安全的地方筑巢)”可知,工人们没有拆除鸟巢,而是安装了一个钢箱,让鸟儿们有一个更安全的地方筑巢,故可推测出划线词 dismantling 意思是“拆除” ,与 C 项“Removing”意思一致。故选 C 项。
通读全文,结合第五段中“The solution: a human-built steel nesting box made especially for the ospreys. Instead of dismantling the nests, workers installed (安装) a steel box so that the birds could have a safer place to build nests.(解决方案:一个专门为鱼鹰建造的人造钢制巢箱。

Traffic flow becomes unstable as the number of vehicles increases. At 15 vehicles per mile per lane, a single driver tapping the brakes can cause a lasting wave of
traffic jams that spreads backward for miles. “This is a phase transition,” explains Katsuhiro
Nishinari, a traffic researcher — similar to water freezing into ice, where a small change (like a
temperature drop) causes a dramatic shift in state (from liquid to solid).(随着车辆数量的增加,交通流量会变得不稳定。
Recent studies tracking desert ants show they travel in

well-organized groups of 3 — 20 individuals, moving at nearly constant speeds with consistent
spacing between one another — about three body lengths apart. Crucially, they never speed up to overtake slower-moving peers, which prevents the “sudden slowdowns” that jam human
根据划线词后文“to ants on a trail, which use chemical smells to organize their movements to coordinate behavior while interacting with one another( 蚂蚁,它们沿着一条 路径行进时会利用化学气味来协调自身的行动,从而实现彼此之间的协作)”可知,自动驾驶汽车可以通过共享数据协作,这类似于路上的蚂蚁,它们用化学气味组织移动、协调行为。 故选 A。
Still, today’s drivers can learn from ants: Nishinari advises
avoiding following too closely. Leaving extra space between cars allows drivers to absorb sudden braking in heavy traffic, preventing the spread of traffic jams. “Just maintaining a safe distance,”
he says, “can keep traffic flowing smoothly even when there are large numbers of cars.”(不过,如今的司机们可以从蚂蚁身上学到一些东西:Nishinari 建议不要跟车太近。
