While I was working at a French school, I was often preparing my work in the staff room. Sometimes I would hear the school secretary talking. At first I thought she was talking to me, as
there was no one else in the room except me, so I tried to respond to her. However, I soon realized that in fact, she was talking to herself. I noticed a lot of people do this in France. In the UK,
people might think you’re a bit strange if you talk to yourself at work, but there it seemed quite normal. It really did confuse me at times, because I was not sure whether people were talking to me or just talking to themselves.
Another area of confusion involved the French language. In French, there are two ways to say “you”: “tu” is the informal form while “vous” is the formal form. This is an aspect of French which, even now, I do not really understand. When I learnt French, I was taught to call everyone vous unless they were my family or friends. So I was surprised that virtually everyone in France used the informal tu all the time. School children used tu when they stayed with their teachers and all the staff called the head teacher tu. But I continued to use vous because I didn’t want people to think I was impolite.
As you might know, school children in the UK traditionally wear school uniforms but in
France pupils do not wear a uniform. It was a culture shock for me to see children wear Spiderman
试卷第 3 页,共 13 页
T-shirts and baggy (宽松的) blue jeans in the classroom.
I found the differences puzzling at times, but I couldn’t deny what a great opportunity it was to live and work in another country. The UK and France are only separated by a small
channel of the sea, but there are many differences between the two countries.
21 .In the staff room, the school secretary .
A .always chatted online
B .interrupted the writer
C .talked to herself often
D .always made speeches

A .She tried to be polite to others.
B .She couldn’t tell tu from vous at all.
C .She didn’t have close friends in France.
D .She couldn’t understand French very well.
23 .How did the author feel seeing French kids wear Spiderman T-shirts at school
A .Pleased. B .Embarrassed.
C .Frightened. D .Surprised.
24 .What made the author feel happy to live in France
A .Experiencing different cultures.
B .Communicating in an informal way.
C .Traveling along the channel of the sea.
D .Having a chance to work with French teachers.

Many of China’s ancient architectural treasures crumbled into dust before Lin Huiyin and
Liang Sicheng began documenting them in the 1930s. The husband and wife team were among the first preservationists to operate in China, and by far the best known. Their efforts have since
inspired generations of people to speak out for architecture threatened by the rapid development.
Becoming China’s best architectural historians was no easy accomplishment. The buildings they wanted to save were centuries old, often located in distant parts of the country. In many
cases, they had to journey through dangerous conditions in the Chinese countryside to reach them. Exploring China’s remote areas during the 1930s meant traveling muddy, poorly maintained (养护) roads by mule (骡子), or on foot. Inns (客栈) were often dirty, food could be polluted, and
there was always risk of violence from rebels, soldiers and robbers.
Their greatest discovery was the Temple of Buddha’s Light, in Wutai County, Shanxi
Province. The breathtaking wooden temple was rebuilt in 857 A.D., making it the oldest building known in China at the time.
Liang and Lin crawled into the temple’s most forbidding, forgotten areas to determine its age, including one hideaway inhabited by thousands of bats and millions of bedbugs, covered in dust and littered with dead bats. “In complete darkness and among awful smell, hardly breathing, with thick masks covering our noses and mouths, we measured, drew, and photographed with
flashlights for several hours. When at last we came out to take a breath of fresh air, we found
hundreds of bedbugs in our bag. We ourselves had been badly bitten. Yet the importance and
unexpectedness of our find made those the happiest hours of my years hunting for ancient
architecture.” Liang wrote of the experience in an account included in the book “Liang and Lin:
Partners in Exploring China’s Architectural Past”.

When I was ten years old, I went to the US to visit some family friends. We travelled all the way from California to Las Vegas. I noticed something funny about the way everyone spoke
English. I was thinking, “This is the way they speak in films!”
At the beginning of the holiday, one of my friends asked me ifI wanted to order “French
fries.” I couldn’t imagine what French fries were. What was fried and French ! Snails Cheese She was amazed that I had never tried them and she ordered a portion for us to share. When the
waiter brought us some chips, I asked her where the French fries were. She pointed to the plate of chips! Later that week she said she was going to buy some “chips” from the supermarket. She
came out with a packet of crisps!
During that holiday we were also offered “biscuits and gravy” with our lunch. This was a
very strange idea to me, because in England biscuits are sweet. Gravy is a salty, meat-based sauce.
试卷第 7 页,共 13 页
I later realized that “biscuits” in America are savoury snacks. What we call “biscuits,” they call “cookies.”
One day, I saw an “eggplant” pizza on the menu in a restaurant! Eggs do not grow on
plants, I thought. What on earth could an “eggplant” be Something eggy and leafy My dad ordered this pizza and it was covered in aubergines. I asked him where the “eggplant” was. He laughed and pointed to the aubergines. He told me, “They call this ‘eggplant’ in America!”
Although the same “language” may be spoken in different countries, there are likely to be many differences, not just in vocabulary but also in spelling, grammar and pronunciation! I think part of the excitement of learning a language is discovering the differences in how it is spoken in different places.

A .Holiday is a good time to relax. B .French fries are popular worldwide.
C .The waiter provided poor service. D .Chips and crisps are the same food.

【原文】W: Mr. Brey, I heard you found a very old statue recently.
M: Yes, that’s true.
W: So how did you find it
M: I found it by accident when I was fishing. At first, I thought it was just a regular stone, but then I realized I was wrong.
答案第 1 页,共 13 页
W: Why Did you see the head of the statue
M: No. I found the part ofthe stone I saw was square. I knew that was unusual for a river stone. Then I slowly noticed the rest ofit and found it was a statue.
W: Do you know how old is the statue
M: Experts believe it is from the 1300s, but they will study the statue further to get a better understanding of its history.
W: So what will you do with the statue Will you keep it to yourself

I mean, the shops are open till ten o’clock, such as food shops, chemists. And some supermarkets are open 24 hours a day. Most shops don’t open as early as in England. They don’t open until about 10:00 in the morning.
M: Did you make many friends
W: Well, that’s what’s interesting. We made more friends in our two years there than we have

W: 1, 000 years
M: Most experts believe the cave paintings you see on the wall are around 17,000 years old.
W: What ! Are you serious That’s incredible. I’m so glad we came to visit this cave. Staying at the hotel all day was becoming a bit boring, to be honest. I love getting close to history in this
way.
M: Me too. As soon as I heard we were staying in this area, I immediately thought of these caves.
W: I didn’t realize you had heard of it. What else do you know
M: Well, the cave was first discovered in 1940, opened to the public in 1948, then closed again in 1963. Because I’m a university professor, the staff here allow us to get in.

【原文】M: When I was in college, I spent a term studying in London. Even though we speak the same language, English people and Americans are very different. They think that we Americans
are loud and that we speak our minds too much. So I tried to listen a bit more and not be so
self-centered. I love the lifestyle there. Going out for afternoon tea was fun, and I always did that with my friends. And I really loved the old buildings. We don’t have anything that old in the
United States, so it was pretty amazing! By the way, I also went to Australia once. The buildings there weren’t so attractive either. The British also have a different sense of humor. Their comedy shows on TV are really funny. I'd like to say my experience was a positive one. In fact, I’m saving up money so I can go back there again.

generations of people to speak out for architecture threatened by the rapid development. (这对夫妇是中国最早采取行动的文物保护者之一,也是迄今为止最有名的一对。他们的努力激励了一代又一代的人为受到发展冲击的建筑大声疾呼。)”可知,梁思成和林徽因夫妇是最早采取行动的文物保护者之一,他们使得人们开始有意识保护古建筑,由此可推知,在他们开始保护古建筑之前,许多古建筑没有得到保护已经坍塌,所以梁思成和林徽因夫妇才开始保护古建筑,由此可知,“Many of China’s ancient architectural treasures crumbled into dust before Lin Huiyin and Liang Sicheng began documenting them in the 1930s.
