stone. The Manhattan High Line is different. Raised 25 feet above the ground, this large metal
structure once supported a rail line. The line opened in 1934 to bring trains directly into factories. It was hardly used after the 1960s, and much ofit was torn down. However, one part remained in a region of Manhattan called Chelsea. Chelsea was becoming high-class as restaurants, art galleries and apartments were built, but the ugly railway structure remained as a dead weight. Everyone
knew that at some time, it would have to be removed.
But the High Line was not destroyed. In fact, now the old rail line serves as one of the most peaceful places in the city. It holds an incredible park, with beautiful gardens and great views of
the city. The idea to turn the rail line into a park came from Joshua David and Robert Hammond. In 1999, they attended a meeting to decide how to deal with the High Line. David and Hammond were the only people at the meeting interested in saving the historical structure. Later on, when
they asked railway officials to take them up to look at the High Line, they saw a mile and a hall of wild flowers growing in the middle of the city, and they realized that the High Line had potential to become a park. There was growing interest in improving city centers, and so the project quickly developed and money for construction was easily collected.
The first part of the High Line opened in 2009 and immediately became popular with
tourists and locals alike. Each part of the park has a different atmosphere. Some areas are like
balconies ( 阳台) with wonderful city views. Where the rail line goes between buildings, trees are thickly planted. Other sections have wide lawns ( 草 坪 ) and walkways with wild flowers. Only the final section remains the way it has been for the last fifty years.
24 .What does the underlined part “a dead weight” in paragraph 1 mean
A .Something with historical interest.
B .Something with potential to be better.
C .Something which is a danger to people.
D .Something useless which slows progress.
25 .Why did David and Hammond originally want to save the High Line
A .They wanted to reopen the train line.

C .They were interested in improving the city.
D .They thought it would become a good park.

Every Saturday morning, at 9 am, more than 50, 000 runners set off to run 5km around their local park. The Parkrun phenomenon began with a dozen friends and has inspired 400 events in
the UK and more abroad. The events are free, staffed by thousands of volunteers. Runners range from four years old to grandparents; their times range from Andrew Baddeley’s world record of 13 minutes 48 seconds up to an hour.
Parkrun is succeeding where London’s Olympic “legacy (传承)” is failing. Ten years ago
on Monday, it was announced that the Games of the 30th Olympics would be to inspire a nation of sport lovers away from their couches (沙发). The population would be fitter, healthier and
produce more winners. It has not happened. Officials are still wondering why London Olympics failed to “inspire a generation”. The success of Parkrun offers answers.
Parkrun is not a race but a time trial: Your only competitor is the clock. This kind of sport welcomes anybody. Both new runners and champion runners can have a lot of fun. The Olympic Games, by contrast, wanted to produce more elite athletes. The stress on success kept newcomers from taking part.
In fact, state involvement in planning community sports associations is a bit overdone. If
there is a role for government, it should really be getting involved in providing common goods — making sure there is space for playing fields and the money to build tennis and netball courts, and encouraging all these activities in schools. But all the while governments have been busy with

selling green spaces, taking money from local authorities and declining attention on sports in
education. Instead of wordy, worthy strategies, future governments need to do more to provide the conditions for sports to develop, or at least not make them worse.
28 .What does the author want to show about Parkrun in the first paragraph
A .Its history. B .Its difficulty. C .Its popularity. D .Its development.
29 .What can we infer about the Games of the 30th Olympics
A .It promoted national sport participation.
B .It didn’t bring citizens the expected benefits.
C .It helped popularize the Parkrun movement.
D .Its organizers found the answer to the failure in the Games.
30 .What does the underlined word “elite” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A .Intelligent. B .Brave. C .Excellent. D .Healthy.
31 .What should governments do about sports according to the author
A .Sell or take up green spaces.
B .Pay less attention to sports in education.
C .Organize community sports associations.
D .Provide the right conditions for sports to develop.

Morgan Hartman was born with both physical and cognitive (认知的) disabilities. For years though, she lacked a diagnosis (诊断). One thing she did have: a happy spirit. Her dad, Cordon
Hartman, never wanted to see that spirit dulled. But unfortunately, at times it was.
“In 2006, we were on a family vacation where I watched Morgan not be able to participate in a pool activity with three other children, and it was simply because of her lack of expression,”
Gordon said. “It almost puts a lump (肿块) in your throat because it gives you a sad feeling that all Morgan wanted was to participate. She just wanted to play.”
After seeing this, Gordon started on a quest to create a space where no one felt left out. His idea: an inclusive theme park. He had experience as a builder and enlisted help from other experts to turn his dream into what is now Morgan’s Wonderland. The park, opened in 2010, is believed to be the only one like it in the world and it has expanded to a sports center and camp with an

needs, ever a chance to play in water together. They heard about it and came here. They cried with me and talked to me about how this was the most wonderful opportunity they ever had,” he said.
Morgan’s Wonderland has welcomed visitors from dozens of countries and all 50 states of the USA — and those with disabilities enter for free. “It’s the small things that make the big
difference: Having fun,” Gordon said. “Here at Morgan’s Wonderland and all the different Morgan’s venues, you don’t watch. You participate.”

A national park is an area set aside by a government for the preservation of the natural
environment. The national parks in the United States and Canada center on the protection of both land and wildlife. 36 And those in Africa primarily protect animals.
It is widely thought that the idea of a park or nature reserve under state ownership started in the United States in 1870. 37 Yosemite, Sequoia, and General Grant National Parks were established in the United States in 1890. And the U. S. National Park Service (NPS)was created in 1916 to manage the parks. 38 In addition to national parks, the system included national
preserves, seashores, historic parks and sites and so on.
Partly following the American example, movements supporting national parks sprang up in many other countries. 39 . And Canada set up its first three national parks in the
mid-1880s. The establishment of modern national parks and nature reserves gained momentum
(动力)only after World War I or, in some cases, after World War II in Europe. Great Britain
established the administrative machinery for both national parks and nature reserves in 1949. 40
But interest in parks came later in Asia and Latin America than it did in the Anglo-American countries and Europe.
A .These movements began in Canada.
B .George Catlin offered the idea during the 1830s.
C .Visitors are allowed to enter for different purposes.
D .Those in the United Kingdom center mainly on the land.
E .Japan and Mexico established their first national parks in the 1930s.
F .By the early 21st century the NPS managed more than 400 separate areas.
G .It is also thought that the world’s first such park was Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming.

My mother was the oldest child in a family of four children. At the age often, my mother
was charged with all the household responsibilities while her mother went to work. At a time
when most children focused on themselves and their needs, my mother looked after the other
children, cooked, and cleaned. My aunts and uncle remember that while they were growing up my mother was consistent (始终如一的) and strict with them, with a smile on her face and a song in her heart.
After working for a couple of years, my mother married my father and started her own
family. Her four children came every two years. In addition to working full-time, she managed to attend each child’s school and sporting events, and keep us all on the straight and narrow
Having learned about her hard childhood and knowing that my father was really her “fifth and worst” child, I decided that when l completed graduate school I would take my mother on the first of what would become our annual (一年一次的) mother-daughter trip. Since l landed a

well-paid job, I told her to pick any place she wanted to go and I would make it happen. She had never been more than fifty miles from our home, so she was very excited.
For the first three years, we went to Bermuda, Arizona, and Charleston. However, during my fourth year after graduate school, I opened my own business, and I was very hard up. I didn't want my mother to know, so I didn’t let on when she said she wanted to go to the Bahamas
I searched for the least expensive way to make this trip happen and ended up with a
“package” that included air tickets, food and hotel stays. Even now, when I think about that trip, I experience some discomfort. The old airplane was very tiny. We had to share the hotel room with local insects.
After a long flight and a terrible bus ride to our hotel, most passengers were tired and disappointed (失望的). However, my mother always kept a positive attitude.
注意:1.续写词数应为 150 左右;
2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
To make matters worse, we had to stand in a long line under the hot sun to get our room key.

It is the most visited urban park in the US and the most filmed location in the world. Planning for the park began back in the 1840s. However, the plans were not accepted until 1853, and work did not begin until 1857.
Additional land was bought at the northern end in 1859. But the park was not fully complete until 1876, almost 30 years after it was thought up. The park is now home to Central Park Zoo, the

67 .To make matters worse, we had to stand in a long line under the hot sun to get our room key. Since there was no place to store our bags, we carried our things along with us in the line snaking toward the front desk. Just when I thought things could not get worse, the late afternoon rains
common to the Bahamas blew in. We all got wet and almost lost our enjoyment in travelling. Finally, I was at the end of my patience.
When I was complaining about the sudden rain, my mother looked at the swimming pool with a bright light in her eyes. With a quick kiss on my face, my mother walked over to the
swimming pool, took off her glasses, and jumped in fully clothed, shoes and all, shouting
“Yahoo!” “This is a great way to cool down!” I thought to myself. I followed my mum into the swimming pool, but I was smart enough to take off my shoes before I ran over to the pool and jumped in next to her. Several other people joined us in the pool.
