In 2004, Pen Hadow became the first person to trek (跋涉) to the North Pole alone, without being resupplied on the way. That meant swimming through cold waters, and risking meeting
polar bears. Just eight months later, he made a similar trip to the South Pole. Now he is back in the Arctic again, preparing for a more ambitious expedition (远征). This time, however, more
significance is attached. Pen and two colleagues will set out on a three-month, 1000-kilometre trek to the North Pole, taking detailed measurements ofthe thickness and density of the ice. Nobody
has ever done this before, and he knows the results will be of vital significance to the scientific community. This will be the truest picture so far of what global warming is doing to the ice that covers the polar region.
Pen and his wife, Mary, live in the country with their two children. “It’s much harder to be away from them this time,” he admits. They were one and five when I last went, and I made a
mistake in the way I said goodbye. I thought it would be a good idea to say to my son, “You’re the man of the house now, look after your mum and your sister.” He absolutely took it to heart, asking his mum how she was all the time, but the stress eventually became too much. While it was well
intentioned, it was an unfair thing to do.
He is spending these last days before departure preparing his things. With him will be Ann Daniels, one of the world’s leading polar explorers, and the photographer, Martin Hartley. They will be supported by a crew of six, flying in supplies. Being part of a team is actually more

stressful to someone like him. Besides, something else is on his mind too. “I’m going to be 47 on Thursday. I’ve done far less training.” Why “Organizational things always seem more urgent. So I’m almost fearful ofwhat I’m going to ask of myself.”
Pen believes his mission reconnects exploration with the search for knowledge that drove previous generations into the unknown. “Making it to the North Pole was a personal ambition and of limited value to anyone beyond the polar adventuring community. This time, scientists will
profit from the data, and we’re creating a platform to expose as many people as possible to what’s happening in the Arctic Ocean. This is important work, and nobody can do it but us,” he says.
“Our skills, which are otherwise not that necessary, have become really relevant. Suddenly, we’re socially useful again.”
24 .What can we learn about Pen Hadow’s opinion of the new expedition in paragraph 1
A .He is aware ofits huge importance.
B .He feels certain that it will be stressful.
C .He thinks it similar to his previous journeys.
D .He is confident with the help of a regional picture.
25 .What does the underlined phrase “took it to heart” in paragraph 2 mean
A .He started to feel unwell.
B .He memorized his father’s words.
C .He was afraid of the responsibility.
D .He carried out his father’s words carefully.
26 .What is worrying Pen about the new expedition
A .Whether he will be mentally prepared.
B .Whether supplies will be enough in time.
C .Whether he will still be fit enough to take part.
D .Whether the arrangements will turn out well.
27 .Comparing the new expedition to his previous ones, Pen feels .
A .uncertain if it will collect information
B .doubtful about its long-term usefulness
C .proud that they can contribute to scientific research
D .relieved that the general public will be more supportive

In 1880, fourteen-year-old Matthew Henson loved to hear sailors tell tales oftheir exciting lives at sea. The travel, the adventure, the danger, and the steady pay were all attractive to young Henson. One day he made up his mind. Baltimore was the nearest large seaport. The next morning he set out on the forty-mile journey to seek work on a sailing ship.
In Baltimore, Henson found a job as a cabin boy on a beautiful ship called the Katie Hinds. For the next five years, Henson sailed around the world. By the time he left the Katie Hinds in
1885, Henson was well educated and had become an excellent seaman.
Unable to find work anywhere else, Henson took a job in a hat shop in Washington, D.C.
One day in 1887, a man came in to buy a hat. The man, Lieutenant Robert Peary, asked the owner if he knew anyone with experience at sea. Peary would soon travel to South America for the U.S. government. He needed experienced men to accompany him.
The shop owner knew about his young employee’s skills and experience on ocean voyages, so he introduced Peary to Henson. Henson and Peary soon found they had a great deal in common, including their love of the sea.
Using his map-reading and sailing skills, Henson proved himself to be a worthy and
intelligent seaman. One day Peary told Henson about his real dream: to be the first man to stand on “the top of the world” at the North Pole. He asked Henson to help him make his dream come true.
Over the next five years, the two explorers made two trips together to the Arctic. However, they were not able to reach the pole either time.
In 1908, Peary and Henson were ready to make their final attempt at reaching the North Pole. Both men were over forty years old. The years of hardship and suffering in the arctic cold had taken their toll on both men. This would be their last chance.
In April 1909, Henson’s instruments showed they were standing at the North Pole. Together Henson and Peary planted the American flag in the snow.
In later years, Robert Peary and Henson were greatly honored for their achievement. Today, the two friends and fellow explorers lie in heroes’ graves not far apart in the Arlington National
Cemetery.

As the Alaskan sky gradually turned dark blue, the commands to my sled dog team broke the silence. I threw a glance over my shoulder as I thundered down the frozen waterway in the
sub-zero temperatures. Where was Mike, my guide I wondered if he realized I was miles away.
While out exploring in the early evening, my lead dog smelled something it couldn’t resist. Regardless of my instructions, it instinctively wheeled around and led all the other dogs in the
opposite direction at full speed. In my conversations with Mike over the past few days, I’d been told that if I got lost, I would be in big trouble. There weren’t any supplies for me —no extra
clothing or shelter, not to mention the firestarter, and we had seen wolf tracks regularly.
It was March, the end of the Alaskan winter. A long journey from Australia had brought me to Yukon, Alaska. My hosts’ log cabin was the starting point for my 10-day adventure. Wayne and Scarlett, my hosts, lived a sustainable life. They hunted, fished, and gathered food while
consciously minimizing their carbon footprint. Having enjoyed many years of exploring the Alaskan wilderness, the couple chose to help adventurers to experience the same lifestyle.
Driving a team of sled dogs is not as easy as it appears. I’d imagined it would be a very

relaxing experience, in which I would ride along with a pleasant smile while gazing at the passing landscape. In reality it turned out much tougher. You must predict where your dogs would go and how the surface ahead might change.
During the journey, we stayed in a different place every night, and took care of our dog
teams. These dogs can guarantee our safety and help us escape dangerous situations, so their
health and well-being always rank first. After we settled, we started collecting snow for water and cutting fire-wood.
Luckily, I didn’t end up in the fangs (尖牙) of wolves. Mike found me sometime later. Our dog teams, in the excitement of being reunited, headed straight for each other and got tangled up in the ropes. There’s never a boring moment.
32 .Why did the writer get lost
A .The lead dog was misled by other dogs.
B .The lead dog followed wrong commands.
C .The lead dog was attracted by an irresistible smell.
D .The lead dog failed to determine the direction in darkness.
33 .Which of the following can best describe a real dog sled ride
A .Dull. B .Exhausting. C .Comfortable. D .Entertaining.
34 .What do we know about the life in Alaska
A .Locals live on tourism. B .Fire comes first in exploration.
C .Wolves live in peace with humans. D .Dog sled teams deserve priority care.
35 .What is the text mainly about
A .The Alaskan lifestyle. B .The tourism in Alaska.
C .An adventure in wilderness. D .An appreciation of nature.

gold and perhaps a shortcut to Asia. 36 It became France’s main route into Canada.
Jacques Cartier was born on December 31, 1491 in Brittany, a province of France. In about 1534, the king of France asked him to lead an expedition(远征) to the New World in search of
riches and a new route to Asia.
37 There he and his crew explored the land around the Gulf of Saint Lawrence and met Native Americans. When he sailed back to France, he took with him two Native Americans.
38 This time, Cartier sailed deeper into the Gulf of Saint Lawrence and into the Saint Lawrence River. The two Native Americans he had taken before had learned French, and they served as guides. About 260 miles inland, Cartier reached the Native American village of Stadacona. Today, the city of Quebec stands near that place.
Cartier and his men were among the first Europeans to winter in what is now Canada.
39 After returning to France he reported tales told by the native people of treasures farther inland.
Cartier once again crossed the Atlantic in 1541. 40 When he returned to France in 1542, he was told that they were just the common minerals pyrite(黄铁矿) (fool’s gold) and
quartz(石英).
A .A second voyage came in May 1535.
B .Instead he found the Saint Lawrence River.
C .The bitter cold surprised them, and some of the men died.

It was the middle of July when we drove way up into the mountains and backpacked up a stream. The banks were lined with old trees. We waded (涉水) through the cold water, our
backpacks balanced on our heads.
We set up camp on a sandy flat beside a pool. What a swimming hole! My brother and I swam, diving and playing in the clear water. We-hiked upstream, against little rapids. Suddenly we heard a roaring sound, and as we came around a bend, we saw what was causing it.
A huge waterfall! It rose high above us. “Wow!” I said. “Let’s climb it!” “No way,” said Dad. “End of the road.” We turned back but I couldn’t stop thinking about the waterfall and how much I’d like to climb it. Later, lying in my bag, I thought of the waterfall, wondering what was on the top... then finally I fell asleep.
The sun was hot as a bonfire. We cut leaves as wide as elephants’ ears, and tied them on our heads to keep us cool. Then we waded against the little rapids deep into the stream. I was the first one to the waterfall. “Let’s go up. I think there must be something unique out there,” I said. My brother smiled. “If you go, I will,” he said.
I found a way alongside the falls, and then we climbed like mountain goats. Mom shouted, “Be careful!” And we inched our way up and up—the tips of our toes gripping thin ledges (岩石突出部分), our fingers finding cracks. Sometimes rocks were unstable, but we clung (粘住) like glue. We had to.
The waterfall roared by our ears. “I’m scared,” said my brother. I said, “Just don’t look down.” Near the top, a tree grew out of the rock. It was just what we needed. When we stood at

leaving.
M: How hot will it be
W: Down in the canyon, it’s not unusual for the temperature to reach 40℃ . Also, the rainy season is about to start, so there’s a high risk of thunderstorms later this week. In fact, there are about
25,000 lightning strikes every year in the Grand Canyon.
M: Wow! What if we’re caught in a thunderstorm while we’re hiking
W: If we hear thunder, we need to go to a safe place immediately. Don’t touch any metal railings or stand underneath the trees.
M: OK. Is there any chance of seeing wild animals when we go on our hike
W: Yes, we’ll definitely see a few! Since you asked, let me take the opportunity to tell you about that. Keep a safe distance — the behaviour of wild animals can be very unpredictable. Stay 15
meters away from small animals, and 30 meters away from large ones.
M: I see. Any other tips
W: Also, do not feed animals. They might start behaving aggressively towards you. It’s also bad for wild animals to become dependent on human beings.

M: Well, there are different kinds of deserts-hot deserts and cold deserts. And hot deserts aren’t always hot. The temperature changes, for example, from 38 degrees to 10 degrees.
W: 10 degrees! That’s cold.
M: Also, only about 30 percent of the world’s deserts are sand — a lot of deserts are just rocks
and stones. But all deserts have one thing in common: they’re very dry, with about 250 mm of rain
a year.
W: OK. So there isn’t any water. So how do animals and plants live in deserts
M: A lot of desert animals sleep in the day and come out at night to look for food. They get water from the food. And desert plants have water in them. People often live in groups, and they often live at the edges of deserts. Oh, it’s time for class. You can ask me more after class.

climbing a wall of rock. After climbing, the girls took a hike. During the hike, they stopped for a lesson on map reading. They also learned to find their position on the Earth using nothing but a thin rope and information about their current height above sea level.
The young woman had several reasons for wanting to enter the programme. They wanted to meet new people, be involved in science during the summer break and face their tears. They were surprised by how quickly they made friends as they learned to trust themselves and others.
Girls on Rock does not consider academic performance when choosing participants.

根据第二段上文“I thought it would be a good idea to say to my son, “You’re the man of the house now, look after your mum and your sister.”(我认为我对儿子说:“你现在是家里的男人了,照顾好你的妈妈和妹妹。”是个好主意。)”可知,Pen Hadow 让儿子照顾自己的妈妈和妹妹。再根据下文“asking his mum how she was all the time(一直问他妈妈感觉怎么样)”可知,他的儿子认真执行父亲的话。所以,took it to heart 意为“他认真执行父亲的
故选 D。
Being part of a team is actually more stressful to someone like him. Besides, something else is on his mind too. “I’m going to be 47 on Thursday. I’ve done far

One day in 1887, a man came in to buy a hat. The man,
Lieutenant Robert Peary, asked the owner if he knew anyone with experience at sea. Peary would soon travel to South America for the U.S. government. He needed experienced men to accompany him.(1887 年的一天,一个男人进来买帽子。
根据划线词前面的内容“In 1908, Peary and Henson were ready to make their final attempt at reaching the North Pole. Both men were over forty years old.
In April 1909, Henson’s instruments showed they were standing at the North Pole. Together Henson and Peary planted the American flag in the

I’d imagined it would be a very relaxing experience, in
which I would ride along with a pleasant smile while gazing at the passing landscape. 以及“After we settled, we started collecting snow for water and cutting fire-wood.(安顿下来后,我们开始捡雪取水,砍柴。)”

故 C 选项“An adventure in wilderness.(荒野探险。)”

67 .One possible version:
Mom looked at Dad and Dad looked at Mom. Then Mom started climbing, and Dad
followed—I couldn’t believe my eyes! I lay on my stomach and shouted directions. “No, not that ledge—try the one up to your right!” I never felt more anxious—seeing my parents clinging to that smooth rock—or more proud, either. Then I heard a shout and my heart jumped into my mouth.
But it was a shout of victory! My parents pulled themselves up, up, and over the top.
“We did it!” Mom shouted, breathing hard. “You did it!” I also shouted excitedly. “Dad, I
thought you said it couldn’t be done!” “It can’t,” he said. Together we burst out laughing. Then
after a short rest, we continued upstream. Along the way we saw special scenery up there, which
gave us great joy and left us an unforgettable impression. This experience made my heart feel big and wild, and I believe that success belongs to the brave.
