To Their Own Beat
When Los Lobos perform in concert today, audiences in the thousands cheer them on. It’s hard to believe that the group started out as just another garage band playing popular rock-and-roll tunes from the radio, In 1974 four high school friends from East Los Angeles formed Los Lobos
( Spanish for “The Wolves” ) .
Like many garage bands, these friends might have simply gone their separate ways after
high school. But the members of Los Lobos wanted to keep making music together. They decided to change their musical style and began focusing on traditional Mexican music that showed their tradition.
“We pulled out all those records we used to beg our parents not to play around our friends and found an incredible wealth of music,” says Perez. “These guys (on the records) were doing amazing things with their instruments, and we started trying to pick up on it. ”
The group put aside its electric guitars for the acoustic ones used in traditional Mexican music. For several years Los Lobos played at weddings or parties—any event that needed live music. They also landed a regular engagement (合同) at a Mexican restaurant.
By 1978 Los Lobos had made enough money to record their first album (唱片) , and they sold copies of it wherever they performed. They also returned to their electric guitars to get closer to a Tex-Mex sound, which is a mixture of traditional Mexican music, rock and roll, country
music, and the blues. This new, louder sound produced one unexpected result: the group was fired from the restaurant.
But it didn’t matter that Los Lobos had lost their one steady job, because they had found a position that no other group took up. They had combined electric and acoustic instruments and
blended (混合) musical styles in their own way. Steve Berlin joined the band in 1983 as the saxophone and keyboard player, adding to the band’s unusual sound.
“We didn’t so much want to recycle the music we’d grown up with as much as find the common links between it and all the other styles and sounds that were all around us,” Perez
explains. “It became a mission ... bringing music together to bring people together. ”
In the 1980s Los Lobos gained the attention of several record companies. They were hired to perform on the soundtrack to the film La Bamba, which earned them a Golden Eagle Award.
They have since earned many awards, including two Grammys and an MTV Video Music Award.

For a scholar focusing on Australia’s public diplomacy (外交活动), working as a
recreational manager in China may never be part of his career path. But Bradley does have lots to say now about his special experience at a resort in the picturesque tropical coastal city of Sanya in South China’s Hainan province.

University less than two years ago. Such an academic life was just added color with a chance offered by the cultural exchanges project, “I’m in China”.
“What I liked most about the experience was it was something completely different that you would never be able to do as a regular tourist,” Bradley said in an interview. Bradley was chosen to work as a recreational manager for a Chinese wedding.
The film crew took them to many “amazing sites” and the staff at the resort taught them a lot about how to “incorporate modern Chinese features while still keeping traditional customs”, Bradley said.
“I would have to say two things stick out as the most memorable: the helicopter ride and talking with the staff at the hotel about how to organize weddings here in China,” he said.
That was Bradley’s first time to be in a helicopter, and he was too absorbed with the “stunning” view of the beautiful coastline.
“I think it is so important to show other Australians the different landscapes China has to offer. I think so many Australians, when they think about China, imagine the historical sites of Beijing and the exciting things to see in Shanghai but have no idea about other beautiful places, like Sanya or the many other places people have been taken to in this TV series,” Bradley said.
“I’m in China” is a project sponsored by China Intercontinental Communication Centre and other institutions under the guidance of China’s State Council Information Office. It invites
foreign natives worldwide to experience unique jobs and participate in activities that one can find nowhere else except in China. More than 10,000 photos and articles were submitted from around the globe by over 6,00 applicants.

With the rapid development, the city of Chongqing is becoming more and more attractive to outsiders, including foreigners. For 26-year-old Moldovan Gabriela Cojocaru, who has the
Chinese nickname Li Xiaoxiao, Chongqing is the beginning of a dream.
In September 2014, Xiaoxiao, who has studied ethnic dance and ballet since childhood, graduated from the Moldovan National Dance Academy, and several classmates joined her on a trip to China. However, she did not know any Chinese or even English. She made many friends from China, which gradually solved her obstacles in language communication and made herself better adapted to life in China.
“I think as a foreigner, first you have to learn Chinese,” she said. “Then you can go to better understand the culture and the Chinese people.” But after learning what she thought was Chinese, she discovered that the language she had spent two years learning is actually the Chongqing
dialect. Such is her delivery that even a Chongqing local would be hard to tell that she is a
foreigner by just hearing her voice. As Xiaoxiao thought Chongqing dialect was standard Chinese, she took considerable efforts to be good at it. This “mistake” has turned out to be a lucky strike.
But she is more interested in doing something that helps the two countries understand each other. As such, she introduced Chinese food or Chongqing food, and stories about China to her
friends in Moldova. She plans to introduce the history and specialties of Moldova, such as Moldo van wine, to the Chinese. She hopes to let more people know that this country actually has a rich history of more than 5,000 years of wine-making.
“I’d love to do it,” she said. “I will continue to strengthen the culture of the two countries and hope that the two countries will become better and better.”

As you get older, you'll meet a wider range of people from different cultures. Culture is an idea that isn't easy to understand. People often use the term to refer to things like food, holidays,
clothing and music. 36 Religion, customs, beliefs and values are also part of your culture. So when meeting people from different backgrounds, you can sometimes find that there're huge
differences in how you see the world.
37 For example, when you meet people from a different culture, ask them about
their lives. It is one of the best ways to understand the culture. But be polite about it and remember they don't owe you an answer, and might not want to give it—not everyone wants to explain
everything about their culture.
Maybe you've recently met someone from a different culture you find
interesting. 38 Get to know his/her families and see how their customs and traditions
differ from yours. You might be surprised to find how culturally different two people living even in the same town can be!
Read books by and about people who are different from you. Reading memoirs (回忆录),

biographies and other nonfiction books is an obvious way to learn about a country or someone's
life. 39 Like with books, you can also watch movies to learn more about a culture. What's more, keeping yourself in a different culture through travel is also an amazing way to understand another culture.
40 So accept and respect the differences between yourself and your friends from different cultures—remember that what is a difference to you is just their normal life!
A .Make friends with him/her.
B .But it also goes much deeper than that.
C .Show respect towards people from other cultures.
D .You may think you know a lot about a culture or place.
E .Differences between us are what makes life so interesting.

I was four years old in 1993, when my family emigrated .(移民) from the United Arab
Emirates to Toronto. Young enough to be changed by my new home, but old enough to know I
was different from everyone around me. I was the only Arab and only Muslim in my junior
kindergarten class. Beyond those obvious differences, Canadian life proved to be quite distinct in other ways. And I discovered another surprise that December.
Overnight, everything was suddenly covered in red and green. My classmates talked
excitedly about cookies and what gifts they’d asked Santa for that Christmas. At some point, I
must have asked myself, “What is Christmas ” There’s nothing quite like it in the Muslim world. The closest comparison might be Eidal-Adha, which translates from Arabic to “Festival of
sacrifice”. While both holidays show the same spirit of sharing with the less fortunate and
spending time with loved ones, Eid meant new clothes and a family dinner. And that was about it. No tree decorated with ornaments (装饰物), and no gifts covered in wrapping paper.
Christmas was completely foreign to me, but then my parents unexpectedly informed me that Santa would be paying us a visit on Christmas Eve. “But aren’t we Muslim ” I asked.
“Yes, but Santa loves all children equally and gets them all gifts,” my mother replied.
So on that first Christmas Eve in Canada, she hung oversized red and white stockings, each one customized with our names, off our bedposts. I have a distinct memory of the restless
expectation that kept me awake long after bedtime and my joy when I got up on Christmas morning to find my stocking filled with gifts.
Still in my pyjamas(睡衣), I ran over to the kitchen to tell my parents that Santa had indeed visited us last night. I asked if they’d seen him, and Mom said, “Of course!” Mom offered Santa a cup of coffee, as is the Arab custom when hosting guests. He needed the energy for the long night ahead, she told me.
When I returned to school after the holidays. I had a story to share with my classmates. Santa had visited me too! I could show off gifts while other kids showed off theirs.

Hi, I’m Chris from Florida. Last year, I moved to London, where I’m working for an
American company. It’s been a big change, and there have been lots of things to get used to. For example, in the U.S. we drive on the right, while here in Britain I’ve had to get used to driving on the left.
What else Well, the weather in Florida is usually great, so I’m used to lots of sunshine, and I used to sunbathe a lot. In London it rains so much. I don’t think I’ll ever get used to it, and I
always remember to take my umbrella with me.
Food in England is different, too. In America, I used to eat a lot of Mexican food. Here in
England, people love Indian food, so I’m getting used to the different tastes. At the company
where I work, it’s quite different. I used to work from 9 a.m. till 11 p.m. I hated working so late.
Here in England, I start at 8: 30 a.m., but finish at 5 p.m. On Friday evening English people like to go to the club with friends, but in American I used to go to the gym. I love sports.
Is there anything else Some of the words are different. The subway is called the “underground” in London, and British people call the fall “autumn” .

67.My parents kept our Christmas tradition going for years, until I was too old to believe in Santa anymore. I never asked them why they went through all that bother, but I suspect they did it so we could feel like we belonged in our new country. Creating a sense of belonging is an important
thing. It influences physical and mental health. But you can’t force yourself to belong somewhere. That belonging comes from a change within you, from a willingness to be part of something.
As an adult, I’ve come to realize creating a sense of belonging is joining in traditions. The
specifics of Christmas, from Jesus to Santa, are all irrelevant in a sense. What matters is that
答案第 11 页,共 12 页
Christmas gives us an excuse to bring people together to share in the love that unites us. So
perhaps, when I have kids of my own one day. I’ll revive the family tradition and invite Santa over for a cup of coffee before he leaves my kids in their stockings.
