From carving to caring: Gabriel’s journey of hope
Gabriel Clark, a teenage boy from the Lake District in England, gained over 250,000 followers after his parents promoted his once-called “uncool” wooden carvings. Thanks to their encouragement, his talent got the attention it deserved①.
Gabriel had been taking orders for his wooden carvings, but the number of requests quickly grew to such an extent that he realized it would take him over 30 years to complete all of them. So, he decided to sell just one special carving: a wooden bowl decorated with three different colours.Gabriel set up a fundraising (募捐) page on JustGiving, where he raised money for Save the Children, whose mission② is to improve the lives of children around the world. His goal was to aid③ children affected by the war in Ukraine, promising to choose one donor to receive the bowl as a thank-you gift.
Since Gabriel started the fundraising campaign, over 14,000 people have donated④ money, even after the winner of the bowl was announced.Gabriel’s original goal was to raise £5,000, but he was amazed when the donations reached almost £250,000.He said, “I really hope everyone’s generosity⑤ can help children in Ukraine.”
Thanks to Gabriel’s efforts, many children’s lives will be improved by the funds⑥ raised for Save the Children, which will provide essential⑦ supplies to children in Ukraine.
This story shows how one young person’s idea can grow into something much bigger, bringing hope and support to children in need.

The Well That Changed the World
As a six-year-old Canadian schoolboy, Ryan had trouble believing① the words spoken by his teacher that many people in developing African countries couldn’t get enough clean water[1].He looked across② the classroom at the drinking fountain③.It was very close—only ten steps away. So, Ryan asked himself,“Why do some African children have to walk ten kilometres to get water every
day And why is the water so dirty that it makes them sick ”[2] Young Ryan thought, “Life is easy for me, but hard for those people. Why don’t I help ”
[2]so...that...
At first④, his plan was to earn money⑤ to build a single well somewhere in Africa. He cleaned windows and did gardening for his family and neighbours. He soon reached his first target⑥ of $70, but when he gave the money to a charity, he was told that it actually cost $2,000 to build a well[3].Seventy dollars was only enough for a hand pump.[4] Ryan understood that a hand pump wouldn’t help the children. What they needed was a well dug near their homes.[5]
[4]Seventy dollars
[5]what引导的是主语从句,“dug near their homes”是过去分词短语作well的后置定语。
Two thousand dollars was a lot of money, but Ryan didn’t give up⑦.He was determined⑧ to help other children have clean water. He started to ask for help from his classmates and neighbours and persuaded⑨ them to donate⑩ money. At the same time , a friend of Ryan’s mother helped make his story go public .After several months, Ryan had raised the $2,000, with which a well was built near a primary school in Uganda[6].The children at the school no longer needed to walk for hours to get water. They were grateful to him and invited him to visit.
[6]with which...
In Uganda, Ryan at last saw the finished well with his own eyes .But that was not all.He also saw hundreds of delighted students who had turned out to welcome him. They sang and danced happily. Some even offered him food and gifts. At first Ryan was nervous, but soon a great warmth filled him.[7] He really had made a difference for these children. He broke into a joyful smile .
Later, Ryan’s experience led him to set up a foundation to encourage more people to help. Many inspired people gave him their support.Ryan’s foundation continues to attract support from more and more people,so the work of building more wells can go on.Today, over 800,000 people in 16 countries across Africa have benefited from the life-changing gift of clean, safe water.
Now, as an adult, Ryan says that the question to ask is not “Why don’t I help ”, but “How can I help today ”[8].This insight grew from the determined attitude of a six-year-old boy who had the courage and perseverance to make his dream a reality .
[8]that引导宾语从句,to ask 作定语修饰the question;not...but...“不是……
