Vidal first experienced Brazil’s carnival celebrations as a baby living in Salvador, the
capital of Bahia State. Before he was even one year old, his mother took him to his first carnival event.
The cultural traditions of Salvador have stuck with him. And, Vidal, a trained musician, now performs the typical music of Bahia in the US. He often plays in the Washington area.
February is the carnival season in Brazil and other countries around the world. Even the
Washington area celebrates the season. Last week, Vidal and other musicians performed here for a carnival celebration. Performing in Washington and other US cities has helped Vidal stay close to his Brazilian roots (根).
“Living in the US now and not being able to enjoy carnival as I used to in Brazil with my friends and family is really heartbreaking. And that was the reason why I decided to start making my own events — carnival parties —just to get connected to my roots, and to my happiness.”
It may come as a surprise, but Washington is said to have one of the largest followings for Brazilian culture in the US. This year alone, there are more than twelve carnival celebrations in

restaurants and other places.

To explore how a Western-centric AI impacts users from different backgrounds, the Cornell University team designed a clever cross-cultural experiment. They invited 118 participants
through the online platform Prolific, carefully selecting 60 individuals from India and 58 from the United States. This setup created a “cultural distance” situation: American users interacting with an AI likely aligned with their own cultural norms (规范), and Indian users interacting with an AI potentially were distant from theirs.
The study’s most striking findings turned up when analyzing the content and style of the
试卷第 3 页,共 12 页
essays themselves. The researchers first looked at whether AI made writing more similar within
each cultural group. Using advanced natural language processing techniques to compare the
meaning-based similarity of essays, they found that AI indeed had a homogenizing (同质化)
effect. Both Indians and Americans wrote more similarly to others within their own cultural group when using AI suggestions.
But the critical test was the cross-cultural comparison. Did AI make Indian and American writing styles converge (趋同) The answer was really a yes. The average similarity score
between Indian and American essays jumped significantly when both groups used AI (from 0.48 to 0.54). Participants from the two different cultures wrote more like each other when guided by the AI assistant.
Furthermore, the effect size of this cross-cultural homogenization was stronger than the within-culture homogenization observed earlier. This wasn’tjust a general smoothing effect; it indicated a powerful convergence across cultural lines.
Which way was the convergence flowing Was AI making Americans write more like Indians, or vice versa By comparing situations where only one group used AI, the researchers found the influence was not the same. AI caused Indian writing to become significantly more similar to natural American writing styles than it caused American writing to resemble natural Indian styles. The Western-centric AI was clearly pulling Indian users towards its own hidden norms.
8 .What does the underlined word “aligned” in paragraph 1 probably mean
A .Struggled. B .Identified. C .Competed. D .Matched.
9 .What can we learn about AI’s impact within each group
A .AI may limit personalized writing.
B .AI can reduce cultural communication.
C .AI inspires creativity with various ideas.
D .AI improves fluency in different languages.
10 .How did the researchers prove Indian writing styles were more influenced
A .Through an online survey. B .By comparison.
C .Through AI scoring. D .By setting different norms.
11 .What does the author want to express in the last paragraph
试卷第 4 页,共 12 页
A .AI had a small effect across cultures.
B .AI helped make American writing unique.
C .AI caused Indian writing to be westernized.
D .AI made out the writing styles ofthe participants.

Indoor soilless gardening (ISG) offers a lot of benefits to the agricultural community, yet the process is energy consuming (耗能的) and comes with many limitations.
Because of the controlled indoor environment, soilless gardening requires few, if any,
chemical enhancements. That means less water, air and soil pollution, which is healthier for all of us. With practical ISG solutions in place, food production can feed communities suffering from
food insecurity without being affected by weather events, drought, flood or other common
disasters. Producing food at a local level, whether large or small scale (规模), also means fewer transport emissions and increased self-sufficiency (自给自足).
Currently, due to the youth of the technique as a commercial choice, the setup, energy and labor costs result in a high price point for goods produced. We’re just not yet able to make it
highly cost effective. Until prices lower through adoption and increased availability, ISG is a questionable solution for food inequality.
A recent report by the World Wildlife Fund, “Indoor Soilless Farming Phase Ⅱ:Moving
from theory to action,” outlines some of the possible challenges and advantages for investing in
ISG as one part of a solution to address global issues such as climate change and food insecurity. The report offers an overall look at the future ofISG through both scaling the process to a
commercial level and increasing small-scale opportunities to schools and other institutions. This is the second stage of a project that began with an investigation of the industry and its potential.
In regards to the primary concern of energy consumption, the report states, “In its Phase Ⅰ
Analysis, before working with any farm partners, WWF conducted a life cycle analysis comparing an indoor farm placed in St.Louis to usual farms in California, where most lettuce is grown today. The analysis showed that the overall environmental and health impact of conventionally grown
lettuce produced and shipped from California to St.Louis was lower than lettuce grown in an indoor farm in St.Louis.”
试卷第 5 页,共 12 页
While ISG may not be the overall solution to all problems related to commercial
agriculture, it’s a promising field of study for many applications and is highly likely to play a significant role in the future of gardening.
12 .What is paragraph 2 mainly about
A .The rise in food production.
B .The solutions to water pollution.
C .The experiments ofISG.
D .The advantages ofISG.
13 .What is the main problem for the application ofISG
A .High costs. B .Energy shortage.
C .Environmental problem. D .Farmers’ disagreement.
14 .What is the author’s attitude to indoor soilless gardening
A .Negative. B .Supportive. C .Doubtful. D .Worried.
15 .What’s the best title for the text
A .Can food inequality be solved
B .Can farm pollution be slowed down
C .Is ISG the future of agriculture
D .Are there better ways to apply ISG
